This is the second class in our illustrating series and it is more about learning how to use a mobile system to refine ideas. 

Sometimes you need to be able to take idea and illustrate it visually.

Mobile painting has the best aspects of traditional and digital painting wrapped up in an exceptional user experience.  We are going to go over basic techniques in two mobile apps-Proceate and Paper by 53. We will then use these techniques to illustrate a concept.

1. Mobile Painting Introduction: This is the second class in our visual communication, Siri's, and it's more about learning how to use a mobile system to refine ideas. It's one thing to be able to generate ideas and another to develop them. In order to do this, you need to be able to match up concepts and constructs with simple imagery that everyone can understand. Ideas are great, but to make them wonderful, you have to get on his own war with your idea. Some of the most proficient users of this happens to be common guards because they can take a phrase or an idea and make it so simple that it could be funny to a kid and funny to an adult at the same time. It may not be the same funny, but it translates enough to elicit a response from people. For this class, Waltz will be using the apse paper by 53 procreate. Illustrating Concepts: the last class mobile sketching was about generating ideas. Visual brainstorm. Picture someone standing in front of the white board and turning out ideas. This class is about refining ideas, taking a concept and making it. Really. It's about taking one of those white port ideas in developing it further. Say you retake rate in your closet. You know what you want and you tell the designer and she produces a representation of everything you asked for. She renders a concept. Take a comic artist. They can take emotions and feelings and produce illustration that can vote similar emotions in the reader. How do you do these? How do you take an idea? This class, then, is about practicing, taking concepts and giving them representation. I have broken down illustrating concepts into a four step process. Detail research. Abstract results. After you have generated ideas, you have to flush it out. When we were little, we played the game. Pick a number, any number. If we chose correctly. We got a prize, maybe some candy, maybe a new piece of neighborhood Gossip Point ISS. We had to take cues from the person to help guess the right answer. How their eyes moved. Now we tackle abstract abstract concepts are what defines illustrations, Think of language, think of synonyms and anti news. We say they are similar or opposite, and me. But what differentiates them is the feeling or intent behind the work. Even worse, this feeling or intent can change culturally or generationally. We use words as puzzle pieces. We have a preconceived connotation of a word, and we put them together to express a feeling about an idea. Let's go back to that closet redesign You may ask for to have a whimsical Martin view, but what does this mean is that fairies and clean lines is that pastel colors and steal justice. With the physical reference you will need to build an abstract concept library. This is a library of colors, tool strokes and content. Finally, we end with results. This is where you completely render out the idea. So what we're going to be doing is this class it's practicing, taking ideas and turning them into illustrations 4. The Procreate Interface: I want to briefly go over the interface for procreating. Here is where your actions and preference reside. It shows you things that you can do like change the interface color. This little magic blanc is for overall image adjustments. This little curly s is the free hand selection tool. And over here you have your layer button you can at layers as well as mixed layers, the little Penis for normal. But if you're familiar with photo shop, you can mix the layers using, multiply, lighten, etcetera. This is the erasure. The menu on the left side controls the with on time and the opacity on the bottom. Next comes this much, then the paintbrush. This is the color wheel. Let's take a closer look at the brushes. Each simulates a different style, from sketching to airbrushing. Keep scrolling to find more. There are especially brushes that simulates texture. For this much tool, you have the same brushes as in the painting, but they behave differently. 5. Procreate Brushes: Now we can take a closer look at the brushes. Tapping on the brush opens up, its property would go. You can adjust how the brush will behave, but you also can create a new brush. So here create a name. You can import a brush or use an existing brush as a base. The existing library has a lot to choose from. Repeat this to choose the grain and then adjust to your liking. Here is the tool set for that first thing to know is that there are no tool properties to work with. The fixed color palette is ready to go, or you can use the color wheel to mix and blame. Painting Techniques in Procreate : understanding mobile painting is about understanding how the tools work together. We need to first go over some painting techniques that I want you to use for this class. We will marry some traditional techniques to the mobile platform when we paint. Traditionally, we use a few basic Stroh's. I am going to go over three strokes and both appropriate and paper by 53. Those are the watercolor wash, the dry brush and the cut out first. Ah, in procreate. Digital painting has a layered painting process. You work in layers, adding and subtracting the base color as needed. So let's get some colors down. First thing to know is that the two colors with equal size and capacity they just sit on top of each other. So let's go over some wash drugs. First type of wash smooths the edges. Imagine watercolor painting where you drive water across the paper until it runs smooth. Now we smudged to blend and smooth. The wet, graze brushed, pulls the pain and blurs age. But it doesn't really mix the two colors. The wash blurs but can leave some detail. The water bleed brash performs like the wash brush, but on a smaller scale. The second type of wash is where you blend back in the background color. So here, since our background is why we can at that various capacities of white on top of the color and then smudges smooth. This is a sample of coloring in an object using the wash mud. Here is a trusty little cut. No, the adding color starts that light, but the more you go over, the darker it becomes. So now let's talk about dry brushing. Dry brushing is just painting without adding a dinner. The colors use the flat color with the color background to enhance the stroke, so now go ahead and practice both dry brushing and cut outs. 8. Painting Techniques in Paper by 53: Now let's take a look at these same techniques in paper. By 53 the brushes simulate a nice watercolor wash. Holding down the stylus produces a bloom. It will keep reducing a bloom. As long as the stylist keeps a constant pressure, the colors will mix. In Blaine, you can see the resulting green here. Going over the strokes produces darker shades. Be careful to note this as the edges will show up on the overlays. Remember, the tool tries to replicate traditional methods, but you must also use their limitations as they are. For example, the edges always show, so keep building on them to produce the layered wash look. You can still layer the background color into the wash to wash out the stroke, but the white brush doesn't completely mass the edges. So going back to our trusty little cut, this is eyewash. Sample with paper by 53. The dry brush look and cut out comes from the same tool. This little paint roller remember, mobile painting is more about understanding how each tool works, so look at how the colors layer. They act as transparent colors with nice hard edges. Yet this tool still behaves as the brush by producing a darker color, each iteration of it. So the white, however, becomes more opaque. Unlike the brushes in white, here are the same colors using the brushes for comparison. Now let's combine the two tools. No, the brush tool does not blend with the roller tool. Instead, the color just sits on top of it. Now back to the little cuff. Here is a dry brush. Cut out sample exercise time, take another moment and test out how the other tools react to one another. 9. Color Schemes in Procreate: Now that we have the techniques down, let's refine our storytelling. Remember, angle is to take a concept and turn it into something more refined. Two. Stated another way. We're going to take a sketch and turn it into a full repainted illustration. With that in mind, we're going to create a color palette going back to the Abstract Concepts Library. We're gonna build our 1st 6 color schemes to be included in it. You will need a color scheme for warm, cool pop. Bright, somber. We're gonna make these pallets loose in flex, so first choose about six colors for each set they should represent. The overall color feel will stay pretty basic. So warm has a reddish only feel cool, has a greenish blue field. Pop has a pinkish bright field. Bright has a yellowish feel, and summer has a grayish blue field. When using scheme, your illustration just stay within the same color family, meaning changing the colors value is acceptable. Each set automatically should contain a white and a black. Make sure you explored a J pig of your color set so that you can use them for future reference. Let's make some parents go to the color wheel and hit the addition sign. Type in the name for your palate and then start picking colors. Remember, if you have a specific color value number, you can also add those values you can choose colors two different ways. Picking them off the pallet or choosing them from the image itself. Hold the cursor over the color, and it will be selected. Putting this key down enjoying is a quick way. They always have your palate handy. Go ahead and make your palates, then draw some simple shapes to test out your color palette. Color in each shape. Using a different power. Use all the colors. If you flying one not working. Switch it out. You can delete a color from your palate by holding on the color and tapping the lead. Make no of any strokes or tools used at them to your library as well. 10. More Color Schemes in Paper by 53: Now let's go over creating your old color palette in paper by 53 you can drag a color to the color wheel and mix it in. Dragging that color to the background will change his color. But to make your own palette, just pick the color. Hold it in, drag it over to an empty slot. So now go ahead and make up one of your color palettes now. 11. Painting Exercises: now that we have our environment, said that Let's get some practicing. Remember, we're trying to use some traditional brush strokes on a mobile platform because we want the color our final illustration using these techniques. First up is the color field wash. This type of drawing is about covering the entire canvas with seamless color washes. Choose one of your color palettes and make light translucent wash strokes over the entire canvas. This is to give you practice on blending. The important thing to note about digital washes is to be careful of the bleed. You don't want to over blur. If this happens, either undo or at texture back by layering the color. Next up is the edge. Mix up sometimes the drawing and be defined by its edges. You don't need to fill the background, but do remember how each tool stroke behaves with one another combined both the soft and the hard ages by layering each one. This is not about a racing to get clean lines. It is strictly about using the original organic edges. The last time I want you to look at its flat paint, this is utilizing the cut out in July brush. The important thing to remember about flat painting is there's no blending. The mixing of color happens more in the mind's eye rather than on the tablet. The color Blaine is meant. 12. Final Project: for this project will be illustrating a common idiom. Attached to the class is our list of idioms that we're gonna use. Choose one using the four step process. You can make your illustration funny, literal or secure. Here, the details. Rule number one. There could be no words on the illustrations. We want the painting to speak for itself. Rule number two. Use one of your color schemes when creating the illustrations. Rule number three Mix and match the strokes used in the class to create your painting. Rule number four.
