About This Class

The principles of marketing are rather basic: connect with your customer, promote an initiative, and sell products. Despite the relative simplicity of these elements, the amount of marketing clutter consumers are constantly bombarded with has made it increasingly difficult to actually have an impact with normal initiatives and campaigns. This is why it is more important than ever to go against the grain with marketing approaches. 

I have been fortunate to build Karmaloop from a bunch of boxes in my parents' basement into the leading worldwide streetwear retailer, and unorthodox marketing strategies have played a huge role in this success. We pride ourselves on creating engaging and unique marketing iniatives, like the Freak-a-thon pictured above, that simultaneously connect with our consumers and improve our bottom line. With this class on Skillshare I hope to provide you with tips, tools, and frameworks to apply unorthodox marketing strategies to your own endeavors.

Through exclusive video lessons and examples drawn straight from my experience building Karmaloop, I will go over:

  • Becoming an expert on your market - learning the importance of interacting with and researching your demographic 
  • Harnessing creative ideas - creativity can't be forced, but it can definitely be encouraged
  • Executing ideas - the most important part of the process. Execution is everything! 

This class is for any business owner looking to improve the effectiveness of his or her marketing efforts as well as anyone aspiring to work on engaging concepts for a branding agency or company. 

Karmaloop Marketing Contest

As a project in this class you will create a pitch deck for an unorthodox marketing concept of your own. If you choose to create a plan for a Karmaloop initiative, my team and I will look over all of them and choose our favorite. This winner will be invited to Boston to work with the Karmaloop marketing team to execute his or her idea. All submissions must be uploaded by Friday, October 18 in order to be eligible. 

Proceeds from this class will go towards the Future Boston Alliance. Future Boston Alliance was founded with hope of bringing Boston into the 21st century by helping create an innovative culture movement. Future Boston believes Boston is a world-class city but cannot rest on its laurels and ride the coattails of its illustrious history. Since its launch, Future Boston has motivated thousands to help this city become greater than the sum of its parts.

Greg Selkoe is the CEO and owner of streetwear retailer Born and raised in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, Selkoe has a Masters in Public Policy from the Kennedy School at Harvard University. Selkoe started his career as an Urban Planner for the city of Boston in the Boston Redevelopment Authority working on housing before he started Realizing the need for a global streetwear provider Selkoe started the company in his parents basement. In less than 10 years has become the largest online streetwear retailer in the world, with over 200 brands, selling in over 35 countries. Karmaloop receives over 4.5 million unique visitors monthly, and is projected to do 200 million dollars in revenue in 2013. Karmaloop also launched a wildly popular online video channel called The site covers a variety of topics through shows and interview with the key influencers and celebrities at the for front of cutting edge youth culture.
