1. How to Be a Trainer Promo: Would you like to be a trainer? Someone who has a commanding knowledge of a subject matter and can lecture to training workshops, seminars all over the world. Hi, I'm t. J Walker, and I am a media trainer. I am founder of Media Training Worldwide, And I put on seminars, workshops, one on one training sessions all over the world with world leaders. And I'm gonna show you how to do the same in your niche. If you want to be a trainer, go ahead and sign up for this class right now. 2. How to Be a Trainer Intro: So let's define our terms. What is a trainer when I say trainer, I mean someone who has a particular area of expertise and is teaching a body of knowledge or a particular skill. Typically two adults. It could be too young people to, although outside of the typical K through 12 environment outside of the typical college course environment. So it's a little bit different from being a teacher. If you're a teacher, you often have access to a student every single day for an entire semester or a year. A trainer often has access to a student for one day, or it could be even for 1/2 a day or for two hours. So that's what I'm talking about as a trainer, someone who's trying to in a relatively short period of time, give either one student 10 or could be thousands. A new skill, a new set of information. Now there's two main types of trainers. As I see, there's the sort of generic trainer in HR, the training department, someone who has basic teaching skills, training skills and will train on a whole variety of topics. That's not with this courses, for there's nothing wrong with people who do that. It's a perfectly fine profession. But I have found that if you don't specialize in one particular niche, you really kept out as far as income as far as potential with your career. If you try to be all things to all people and one day your training on sexual harassment lawsuit avoidance and the next day on Excel spreadsheet and the next day general safety practices of a company, you're gonna be fairly low level within an organization. Perfectly fine place to start. But with this course is about is how to a become a trainer in the first place and be get better and better at it and work your way up the hierarchy of training. So that's what we're gonna focus on right now. 3. How to be a Trainer Trainer v Speaker: a few more good words on the training profession. I love training as a profession because he is never going to go out of style. They're certain styles that can come in and out with respect to public speaking. For example, there was a time when a lot of people need huge money as generic public speakers and then trade associations woke up to the idea one day where they didn't have to pay speakers. They could just get people within their industry to speak, and they would do it and sort of write it off his marketing and promotion. So there are huge, huge numbers of trade associations these days that no longer hire professional speakers. They used to spend money on dozens, if not hundreds, a year, and now it's on one a year. Some trade associations have come so far as to charge people for the right to speak in front of that audience because if it's, for example, an audience of 10,000 mutual fund managers, if you're a service provider, speaking in front of that audience might result in millions of dollars of business. But if you were just positioning yourself as a speaker, you're out of business. That's what's different about training people, for whatever reason, have no problem asking someone to give a speech for free. But it's extraordinarily rare for someone to come up, call me or anyone else and say, Hey, I want you to come doing all day long training. Give people books, videotape them recorded and do it for free. That would take a lot of foots, but doing that so people don't do that. And yet corporations, trade associations, governments need skills delivered to their employees. And, yes, the Internet has changed things, and I do it all online training as you're experiencing now. But there's still something about face to face training, classroom training. If you want to call it that, that's always going to be there, I believe, and there is a supremacist there. It's still seen as the absolute most effective way to really get people to pay attention and to focus now word about speaking, vs training, some public speakers, professional speakers, keynote speakers, air also trainers. Some trainers are also keynote speakers, but they're very different beast. It's possible to be the greatest platform speaker ever. Be a horrible trainer on the other hand, you could be the greatest trainer in the world and be awful keynote speaker. It's not that one is better than the other or more difficult there, simply different As a keynote speaker, you really have to demand the stage. Carrie Ah, whole train of thought, the interesting, engaging and memorable for 45 minutes, 60 minutes without a lot of interaction. Because if you're speaking to 500 people, you can't stop and have individual conversations with each one. As a trainer, you don't necessarily have to be that smooth at Polish that we a keynote speaker, is every second on stage. But you have to be great and really bringing out the most of every person, your training, engaging them, getting them to talk more. But I will say this. If you're serious about being a trainer, a respected trainer and ah, high income trainer, the more you can position yourself is a great speaker, the better that I got a lot of business as a trainer because of keynote speeches I give, so you should constantly try to be a great speaker. It's just when you're doing a training and you have, say, three hours in front of people. You shouldn't be talking for three hours or even two hours or even one hour. The people you're training need to be doing most of the talking for most skills. Now, if your training someone on a pure body of knowledge, the latest accounting laws handed down by the IRS, that is a little bit different. But you still have to engage your audience. You still have to test them. You still have to make sure they're getting it. It can't just be tossing information out. That's also what's different about teaching is in a typical training scenario. You don't have the power to give someone a or flunked them for the semester and cause them to lose their scholarship and kicked out of school. It's typically mawr self motivation for the person there. Even if your boss tells them to G O. It's still you've got to connect with them. You've got to make this real for them. So those are some differences I want you to think about between trainer, speaker and teacher. Great trainers, though, really have all the skills of those three. We'll go into that in more detail 4. How to Be a Trainer Pick Your Niche: If you want to be a trainer and you're not already in a training department in a corporation or government entity, the first thing you have to do is pick your niche. This is perhaps the most important thing you can do in the whole process, because if you picked the wrong niche, you can work 20 hours a day. Spend the other four hours a day doing more promotion. Spin your wheels and you'll never make enough money to support yourself. Money isn't the Onley aim for people? I understand that, but at some point you have to support yourself. You have to make a living unless year living off a trust fund. So I want to give you some guidance in selecting your niche for where you're going to train . For starters, you've got to pick something that fits your credentials or lack thereof. If you want to train people on how to do autopsies and you don't have a medical degree, you're gonna have a pretty tough time. If you want to train people on contract law and you don't have a law degree, preferably from an Ivy League university where you were on law review, you're not going to be able to train people on that. Now, there are certain niches you might be able to train people on how to pass the bar in your state, even if you didn't graduate from law school, if you have a particular skill in helping people get what they want to do, so you've gotta look it what it is, you already know what the credentials needed for particular, if any. And start with that. Now, Once you've done that, here's what I would recommend you do. I recommend that you get a Venn diagram, you make a Venn diagram and you look at all the things you like to dio and just write them down, plot him in a little circle all the things you like to do and then another circle for things corporations actually pay for right down those things and then write down stuff that people pay for on their own. The public. You want something that fits that intersection and let me explain. You may absolutely love training people how to pick their fantasy football teams. You may have a passion for you may be good for it, but I'm not aware of corporations that pay trainers to conduct workshops on how to slight fantasy football teams. I'm also, and it may exist. I'm not aware of lots of people in the public waking up each day saying, I don't want to spend $2000 on someone to teach me how to pick fantasy football teams. So I'm not seeing the public spending money on that, although they do spend money on fantasy football. So that would be an example of something that is in that quadrant of stuff you like to do that you might be good at. But corporations aren't paying for it. Governments aren't paying for When I say corporations, I mean any large entity, including a government. Israel is individuals. Now There are certain fields like, for example, yoga or personal training where individuals pay for it. But it's rare to get corporations to pay for, and that's a fine that you could be a personal trainer. Yes, there are celebrity personal personal trainers and made a lot of money. Most of them make very little money because they're charging consumers and they're charging three hours a day and there may be peeking out at a certain dollar rate that really doesn't add up to be that much at the end of the year. Now, some of you may know personal trainers who make millions of dollars a year. I'm not passing judgment, but the purpose of this course, the focus of this course, is for people who are training and subjects that are applicable to businesses. Toe organizations to governments because it's frankly, ah, lot easier than having to become the best personal trainer in the world and compete with 10,000 other people in your town who are willing to do it for $9000 a year. Just being blunt now. So I need you to really come up with your niche. What is your focus? Because without that, if you try to be all things to all people, you're not gonna be marketable to large corporations. You're not gonna be able to charge as much, and people aren't going to know where to find you. So that's why it's critically important. You find your training niche. When I first started out, I tried to be too many things to too many people. I told people where I can make Internet videos for you and I can help you with new business pitches. And I've got a PR radio TV network and have 12 things I could dio each month for the first year of my training business. I took one of the things off my list of things I did. By the end of the year, I had it really down to one thing. I train people how to speak more effectively the live audiences in the media. But it's really just one thing I teach people. I training people how to speak more effectively. Once I narrowed the focus of my training business, my business took off and I went from $10,000 the first year when I was all over the map to $200,000 the second year. I'm not suggesting that every single person has the same track record. Some of you will end up being a lot more successful than I am. But I do think that whatever success I had came in part by simply narrowing the focus to a topic that a was of interest to me. I had a lifelong interest in public speaking, speaking to the media, helping politicians speak more effectively. Speaking in talk shows, being a communications official for politicians campaign consultant. So it built off of my own experiences and interests. It was something I genuinely enjoyed generally knew a lot about, and I looked around. Guess what? Corporations and governments spend money on trainers, half day workshops, full day workshops, two day workshops. So I'm not creating something wildly new Now. If you can create something wildly new, that's great. Go off and start Facebook. Become a billionaire. What this course is about is helping you enter the training business and have a successful training business. So I looked at my own background. I said, OK, here's what I'm good at. Here's what I like. Corporations already pay for it. Governments pay for it. And you know what? Individuals From time to time, we'll spend money going to Dale, Carnegie and Toastmasters and buying books on public speaking and speaking to the media. So the public pace for training, too. So I looked at it, and it was the perfect intersection of that Venn diagram of stuff I liked stuff corporations, bait for stuff individuals paid for. That's your first homework assignment. If you want to be a trainer, and get I don't mean to sound like money is the only thing that matters. But if you I want to be a trainer and make more money than a McDonald's Hamburger Flipper, then you need to pick a niche. And this is something that you've got toe like. It can't be something. Well, I'll do that because that's the hot topical it's y two K computers that you cannot pick a topic because it's hot or you think it's market. What just doesn't work? You need to pick something that if people weren't paying, you would already be studying and you've already been reading the news about it. You'd already be reading every books on that subject and stuff you think about. Your friends. Come over to my house. They say, Can you watch the game? I'm like, What are you talking about? There's a political speech on on C SPAN. They looked at me like I'm crazy. I'm not doing that because, oh, gosh, it's my job. I have to do it. Someone might ask me a question about that presidential debate doing it because I actually have an interest in it. If you don't have an interest in the subject matter. Don't pick that as your niche. So that's what you gotta do. Right now. You have to pick your niche for what you want to train on. If you can't do that, you don't pick the right thing for you. Everything else I tell you is frankly not going to be very fruitful. So spend some time, come up with that niche, be able to define it in one sentence. 5. How to Be a Trainer Getting Started: So how do you do your first training If you've never done a training and people are asking , you will What's your tracker? Where your reference. How do you really get over that chicken and egg scenario? Here is my advice. If you already work for a corporation, then volunteer your services with the training department or whatever relevant department you're in. Just take it upon yourself initiated and make yourself available. Now let's say you are an insurance agent by day, and your training is really about sales and has nothing to do with insurance. And it's separate. You can't really volunteer that within your own organization. It would ruffle feathers. That's okay. My recommendation is donate your services. If you're great at selling, donate your services to local charities and help them sell. You go to the locus local goodwill store that sells stuff. Helped them put on the biggest, best sale that they've had ever helped them with an auction where they raised $100,000 for needy people in the community. There, so many nonprofits or political campaigns where you can donate your services. The first media training I ever did know had paid me I was an unpaid intern in college, working for a congressional campaign. There was a debate coming up. I found somebody with a video camera. So let's practice the debate. Let's start asking and it just happened. That's my recommendation to you. Don't wait for this magical moment for someone to anoint. You just do it. Tell them I want to help you hear the skills. I could help it. Here's how we're gonna do it. Do you want to do it Wednesday afternoon? Thursday morning are all day Saturday. At some point you've got to start, and if you're a little bit nervous about it, that's OK. I'm going to give you the techniques of how to actually conduct your training. But there is a lot less pressure if you're doing it for the United Way or other charities or political campaigns. If they're not paying you and you're not the greatest trainer in the world yet, you haven't taken anyone's money unfairly. So start thinking of yourself as the expert is someone who wants to share your expertise and help people Let the world now and you'll be surprised some of the opportunities will come to you. But You've also got to seek out the opportunities. So start thinking about that right now. I'd like you to come up with a list of people and organizations who could already use your expertise who need your training started thinking about that list now. 6. How to Be a Trainer Engaging Your Audience: senator. Later, someone is going to lay out for you. The following. It's the idea that some people learn by hearing some people learn by seeing, and some people learn by doing the kinesthetic learners and supposedly people. They're very differentiated this way. So a good trainer, a good speaker, a good teacher is constantly doing things for the people who are visual. Some for the are on some for the Duterte. Let me just tell you right now is someone who has trained more than 10,000 people for 30 years. That's a bunch of baloney that is absolutely a bunch of baloney. The way people learn the best is by doing. I don't care what anyone else says. I have my own research. I've been doing this for 30 years. You can give someone a book, for example, to read on public speaking. You give someone an audiotape on how to give a great speech, or you can actually have someone stand up in speech video recorded. Critique it, do it again in the end it again, and I guarantee you 100 out of 100 people. 1000 out of 1000 people will be much better actually doing it. Watching themselves getting critiqued rather than reading books all day are listening to audio. Now there are some skills that are more purely intellectual content based summer skills that involve the body. If you're doing public speaking, you're having to stand. You're having to move your hands. You're having to move your mouth so they're different degrees of things that are purely intellectual versus something like How do you canoe? You could be a trainer and dio a 20 minute course on how people can canoe the first time if you're a counselor at a Boy Scout or Girl Scout camp. But again, the focus of this course is more for people in the professional realm learning professional content of help in business and government, where typically the training session could be an hour to our breakout session. Ah, half day, Ah, full day to day or even a week. I do things in all of those increments, and if you want to be a versatile trainer and increase your marketability, you need to be able to take your content, your expertise and help people regardless of the time format. And that's why I said it is important to your career long term to know how to be a good keynote speaker, because if you're asked to speak to on organization 5000 people and they just have a 50 minute slot for you, take it doesn't mean it's the same experience as a two day training with five people. But it's still a way to help people. It's also a way to build your brand as a training expert, and that's really what you need long term to make it in this business, whether it is your own company, you're working for another training company or for a large corporation. But beware in my experience, if you are head of training or a senior trainer for a large bank, large International Corporation of Fortune 500 company, when there is a downturn, a recession, you're often the first ones to get kicked out, so enjoy the nice times when you have it. But be prepared. If you really want a training career long term, you have a lot more stability. If you have your own business and independent client base, you can also, frankly make a lot more money than being in house with corporations. If you do it right. So please keep that in mind. Now, I need you to give even more thought to the specifics of how you want to engage people. Because the number one difference between a teacher, a lecture, a keynote speaker and a great trainer is a trainer can very quickly engage the people they're working with. So, for example, when I dio a day long training of public speaking training for people and I have a class of say, 6 to 8 people, here's how I start my day. So why are we here? Sally? You mentioned you get nervous in front of large audiences. We're gonna help you with that need. Jim and I mentioned what Jim's concern Waas within 10 seconds. So why are we here? I've got four very specific goals for us today. But today isn't about me. It's about you. So your first speech of the day I want all of you to stand up. I want to know. What do you think your strengths are as a speaker? What do your weaknesses and what do you want to get out of the day? And then I sit down. That's how I start an eight hour training session. So it's not Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. I'm T. J Walker. I'm fab a problem I've written best selling. It's not me establishing my credibility. I better have credibility before that day has started. It's not me outlining the whole day. It's quickly showing concern with them, evoking conversations they've had with me quickly. My whole opening presentation is 30 seconds long. I sit down, they stand up. I turned the video camera on and they are speaking. Guess what? Nobody's board. Nobody at that point is sort of sitting back. Nobody's pretending to take notes and doing the grocery list. Now you may have a training expertise that doesn't involve videotaping. Fine. Everyone's different. But my point is, if you want to be a great trainer, you gotta figure How do you engage them right away? Right at the beginning? Ah, Training Day. That's your challenge because most trainers, let's face it, are boring. They do data dumps, and the day could have been spent at home reading documents on a computer. You're not going to be a great trainer. If that's how you come across, you've got to figure out how to engage people how to get them to do stuff. That's how I get people to be. Better speakers is they get on camera not once, not twice, not three times, but 10 times in a day. If you're doing anything that involves a physical skill, it doesn't matter if it's canoeing. Doesn't matter if it's negotiation skills, you've got to get people to do rather than to simply listen to you. That's foreign away. My biggest piece of advice on how to be a great trainer get people doing rather than just listening to you. So I need you to think about you've got your niche Now think about what's the first exercise you would get people to do. Two. If nothing else, think about something they can do to engage people. If you're an expert on negotiation, get people pair up and try to get them to negotiate something. Have them sell each other's pens to each other, have them decide who's going to go to the first restaurant. Break is gonna go to the second restaurant, anything to get people to try to apply the principles rather than just writing content down 7. How to Be a Trainer Create a Lesson Plan: As you're planning your training session, you gotta ask yourself what is the most likely increments of time? People are going to use a trainer for your subject matter now for mine media training, Public speaking training The typical in criminal time is one day you may be in an area where it's two hours, but if you're involved with helping people pass their securities registration, they're serious. Seven. It might be two weeks. You've got to figure out exactly what this standard increments time is, and start planning on how you feel that now the number one mistake most people make is not using enough discernment and judgment. So they're just throwing out data. The biggest way you could spot an amateur trainer or a bad trainer is that it's just all data. Here's the data. Here's the date here. Here's all the slides here. The batter point here, The bullet boy. It's just throwing data. So much of your value as a trainer is figuring out not how to tell people everything you know, but how to tell him just the things that are absolutely critical for them to know and then to get them to know it to the point words, I have it. That's what's really important. As I tell all of my prospects. I could come in lecture to you on public, speaking nonstop for weeks, eight hours a day, 10 hours a day. It wouldn't help you be a better. It might be interesting. It wouldn't help. You would all be a better speaker. In fact, in a typical day of public speaking training, I might only talk for 40 minutes delivering core content. The other seven hours and 20 minutes will be people standing up speaking and watching themselves and critiquing themselves. So that's what I want you to start thinking about. How can you crystallize the principles that air absolutely most important to your audience ? Because ultimately you'll be judged not by what comes out of your mouth. Not whether or not one bullet point is missing from one of your slides, but have you actually transferred your knowledge to the people you're working with? Two of the training? That's the hard part. Simply speaking, knowledge speaking fax Dumping data is, frankly, really easy. Any smart person who's 22 years old can read six books on the subject, digested and sort of stand up and go through bullet points. That's easy, but judgment requires you've read not the six books, but that you've read 60 Earner aware of another of 600 you've distilled it in a way that you can make sense and tailor it to the particular needs of the people you are training. That's where your judgment comes into play. So I want you to start thinking of the actual curriculum you're going to use with your training. At this point when you're starting, you might not have written eight books on the subject or anything. That's OK, but you do have to think about what it is you want to talk about. What principles are you gonna put forth if you're gonna use other books as references? What are those going to be? Start to plan your vision? Ah, training segment. If it's a day long in your industry, plan a whole day. If it's two hours plan that if it's two weeks playing that. But I want to see essentially a lesson plan, not every single second, but I want to see a plan of how you want to use your time with the people. Your training. Do that now 8. How to Be a Trainer Creating content: different people learn in different ways. That part is true. You heard my theory about sort of BS of the audio versus video versus the kinesthetic. People learn the best by doing. However, the very same person can often learn mawr if, in addition to the doing, they've read before and they've heard. So I'm a big fan of making the content from the training available to people in every single format. So, for example, if I am doing a media training with 10 executives two weeks from today and they've just signed a contract, I will send each one of them two of my media training books to read and an online media training course with 3.5 hours of videos and exercises. Now they don't have to do all of that, although a good percentage of the time they dio. But if they do all that, they're already learning tremendously a huge amount before they step foot in the room for the day of training with me, that allows us to go much further in the training. That also means that I had to say a lot less because I'm not delivering core content during the day. It's all about the people I'm helping doing. Sample interviews with them, rehearsing them, coaching them so everyone is different. Everyone's niches different. But I do believe that long term and even short term, you're gonna be much better off if you can make your content available in various format, make it available in a text format and maybe not necessarily just audio. Although I've had many CDs for content but video, it's so easy to do video. Look at this. I'm doing this right now. I'm in a closet in my basement. This is not expensive, folks. This is relatively simple, So I would recommend that whatever you do in the typical training, if you were starting from scratch, create videos of that and create your own online course, the platform or you're watching. This is a great platform for doing it. Cost you nothing, and there are plenty of other platforms online to, or you can upload your videos, put ratings put tax put, chapters to read. This is also, frankly, something you can do before you've ever done your first training. Then, when someone asked you, what are your credentials? You could say, My gosh, I have the leading online course on stamp collecting from South Africa in the 19 fifties. Exclusively, if that's your niche, get that doesn't sound like a lucrative niche to me. But you never know. That's the way you can start training right now is create your own online course. I'll be talking about that more later, but it helps you dramatically for the traditional in person courses where people pay the most. So I recommend right every day on your area of expertise. For many years, I wrote seven days a week on some aspect of public speaking and media training. I try to do it five days a week now, if not writing every day, at least producing videos where I'm giving how to tips and commentary on those issues in the news. So you want to create content that content can be used in the training it could be used before the training is pre training homework so that once you get in there, you can spend your time more and death, having worked conversation or dialogue, helping people's doing simulations and really having the focus on the trainees and their experience rather than huge is lecturing, giving data. So that's what I want you to think about Now is how you can create content that will be used as a part of the curriculum for your in person training session, but could also be used as standalone for books to sell or to give away and online trainings to. So think exactly how you're going to do that and come up with a plan for your curriculum, your content creation. I would like you to have text as well as video. Don't be intimidated. You might just come up with a five page document that has a Siris of 10 checklist of things to do for your area of expertise. It doesn't have to be, ah, 300,000 page book that you have to work on for 10 years. It could be just a Siris of checklists, but having stuff in PdF form handout video format, It all helps the person your training. It also helps burnish your reputation as a training expert 9. How to be a Trainer Video Rehearsal: if you've never stood up in front of 10 or 20 senior executives or people who are wildly influential and major corporations, and now it's your time to do it, you're going to be nervous. How do you get over that? Nervousness? Well, you rehearse, but you rehearse in a very specific way. Do not just read and re read and re read your notes in your power Point, please waste of time. Do not practice in front of a mere waste of time if you practice in front of a mirror. Next thing you know, you're things my nose getting crooked on my losing. More hair. Don't do that. There is Onley. One way to rehearse. If you really want to be efficient with your time and get better, and that is just in front of your cell phone record the video or your webcam. You need to not memorize what you're going to say in a training, are doing a training, but you do need to be really, really comfortable with you need to know exactly what you're focused on, how you're going to say interesting, engaging, memorable way, and the way to do that is to practice on video. It's the number one tip I give to. Every one of my clients is trying to be a better communicator, and as a trainer, you have to be a great communicator, your in the business of training, of communicating your expertise to the trainees in a profound way where they actually don't just understand it, but can act on it with a new skill with a a knowledge base that's so ingrained that they really know it cold. So you've got to be a great presenter, even if you aspire to be on the stage with Tony Robbins talking to 50,000 people, you've still got to be a great communicator. Anyone I'm telling you absolutely anyone less. You have a severe speech impediment or a physiological problem where your tongue's been bitten off. Anyone could be a great speaker. I'm convinced of it because I've trained many people, were awful speakers and went on to be great speakers. The key is yes, practice on video, and you can't do a data dump and every point you want to convey. You have to illustrate it with a story with an example with a case study or with an exercise to get people to really visualize the point you're making and to taste it, touch it, feel it. If you do that, you can be a great communicator. So that's what I want you to do. Now. Whatever you imagine is the 1st 5 minutes of your training day or the whole opening segment , I want you to practice it on video and I want you to watch it. And I want you to critique yourself what you like in one column. What do you not like in another column? Do that now, Practice on video. Do not skip this part of the course. This is the most important part of the course. If you're nervous and uncomfortable standing up talking in front of people, you're gonna be a lousy trainer. People aren't gonna recommend you. Your business isn't going to grow. Your reputation isn't gonna grow. And I'm telling you, it's incredibly easy to get to the point where you're confident, comfortable standing up and training in front of people. But you have to practice on video. So do it now 10. How to Be a Trainer 2nd Rehearsal: I know you probably didn't enjoy that last exercise. Most people don't like the sound of their own voice or how they will. You got to get over that every year. One of the trainees has to listen to your voice, and they have to look at you, so you might as well have to. So here's the next exercise. We're not done. Video taping ourselves. I need you to practice again. Try to more the stuff you like. Less of the stuff you don't like. Watch it again and here's the trick. Some of you may be done with us in two minutes. That's great, because you actually like everything you see. You've gotten to the point where you can look at and say, Wow, that's an interesting trainer. I would listen to that trainer. That person's interesting, confident, a joy to listen to. But if you don't feel that way, guess what? You've got to keep practicing on video until you like what? Just not till I passed you, Not about me giving you an A plus or an F minus. It's about you grading yourself. If you want confidence in front of a group, whether you're training to people 200 or 2000. If you want confidence, the best way to get it is to actually see yourself training the way you like. The way you think is good the way you think is interesting. It's not about visualizing people in their underwear meditating, visualizing a standing ovation. It's a waste of time. You need to actually see a video of yourself. Be great. That will give you supreme confidence that will make you a great, comfortable, confident speaker. Don't do what most trainers do. What most trainers do is they practice on their trainees for the 1st 5 years of their career. So they went from awful. Does not so waffle too mediocre for several? Your process? Why torture people? Why hurt your own reputation? Do it now in the privacy of your own home or office video. Record yourself. Keep practicing. Work out the kinks again. You're not trying to memorize it or make it perfect, but you do want to see do you sound? Skier? Are you too stiff? Are you fidgeting? Are you playing with your ring finger? The video won't lie, so do that. Now keep practicing on video, some section of your training until you can point to it and like it 11. How to be a Trainer Video Record Real Trainings: you want a way to get better and better throughout your training career? Here's one suggestion. Video record. Every actual live training you do and then watch it now. I don't do this every single time now. But for many years I did just have a camera in the back on a tripod, capturing the whole training day. And then you can really look and analyze. How do they do there? Did I respond? Was a too quick to pounce on this person to give this person enough space that I seem annoyed when this person asked the question of third time. You can really learn a lot by watching the video of your training session later. Not too much later, but later that day or the next day within 24 hours is best. Now, if you've ever been to a stand up comedy club, you've seen comedians, even top flight comedians recording there. Comedy there stand up routine because they want to go back and listen to think food. I cost 1/2 a second longer there, and the laughter was 10 seconds longer or two seconds short of their constantly analyzing how tiny, incremental changes and they're delivered their volume. They're pausing at what jokes work what jokes don't work to recalibrate there, Stand up to make it better. Now, if you're a trainer, you're not trying to get laughs every 10 seconds, although if you can get laughs occasionally, that's great. But you are trying to improve the whole training experience, how you're presenting, how you're talking to people, how they're engaging back. So I do recommend that you get a video recording of every training session you do. And if that's not practical, you certainly can just pull your cellphone out. Put it flat. Hit the audio recording session. You can least listen to every aspect of the training and you delete it. You may want to let the people in the room know that you're recording it, and you can certainly delete it in front of them afterwards, after you've listened to a few a few minutes of it, I'm not suggesting you do anything to violate the confidentiality of your clients, but the more you can analyze what you're doing in the real world training environment, the better. So make plans to video record, preferably at least audio record. Every riel training you dio 12. How to be a Trainer Online Training: I can't leave you without spending a little time on online training. This is a golden age for people in the training business and for people who are trying to start off on the training business. When I was getting started in the early eighties, it waas you've got as you know, Internet. There was no email. There was certainly no online training, and everything was in person. I had to sort of lug around a giant camera. Things were cumbersome these days. It is, in fact, so much easier if you don't have an online course that you created yet I urge you that should really be the first thing you do after you've determine what your niches you've done research and you have some of your own. Original content doesn't have to be three best selling books. It could be a PdF with 10 or 20 pages of checklist, but you've gotta have some content where you're not just reading someone else's stuff, where you put your own stamp on it, your own approach. But then you need to create a course Now, these days there are so many great platforms, including this one that allow you to just talk into a video camera, upload videos, break it up into segments, and if you have 30 minutes of video content, you have a course. So that's something you should do quickly. You can plot about this. Think about it, right it, rewrite it, storyboard it. Eight months later you haven't done it, I would recommend if you don't do it today, do it this week. Do not dawdle when it comes to creating your first online course, because the tools were so simple. Now you have no out of pocket expenses. You can learn a lot. It will burnish your reputation if it's a good course. If it's a bad course, people will tell you what's wrong with it. And you can make changes accordingly, and you can build your confidence. As a trainer, you could build a track record. You can get reviews from people who like it, and if they don't like it, that could be more helpful. Sometimes they can tell you what you need to change in your course now. I've been a big proponent of online training for a long time, and I have been wrong. I started an online media training class in public speaking class for political candidates in the 19 nineties. And let me tell you, it went nowhere and I made that much money. But finally, finally, things have caught up, and now there's been an explosion in online training. There are now tens of millions students, if not more all over the world attending online trainings. Not just universities in high school classes, but lifelong learning training sessions, things that you and I are involved with. And that's why I have created more than 100 online courses, training courses. You don't have to have 100 focus on one that you're really proud off. And that way, finish it. You may wanna let students in for free to get started. To get a certain number of he'll be a trainer. You'll be a trainer right away, and then you can raise prices. You can use that as a calling card, two other organizations to hire you as a professional trainer. So please, you can ignore a lot of my advice, but I beg you to do that one thing. Go ahead and create your own online course today, preferably but especially do it this week. Just get it up there. Something beats nothing. Don't spend another six months. Six years planning thing about Get a course up to date. Start learning. Start improving, start getting better. 13. How to Be a Trainer Conclusion: thanks for joining me on this course on how to be a trainer to summarize. I want you to really get a lot of thought to the niche you want to be. A. That's so important, because if you pick allows ing niche where there's just not much demand, corporations don't spend money on it. Individuals don't spend a lot of money on it. You could really end up spinning your wheels. Not doing much, not helping many people not making any money, not really accomplishing much. So spend some time finding your niche. Once you have your niche, go deep, create content right about it every day, create videos every day and come up with your own unique system for helping people in this subject matter. And then beyond that, don't waste any more time. Fact. Don't even go to anymore courses like this. I want you to start your own course today. Today create an online course on this platform right here. Others. There are now hundreds of platforms on the Internet that will not charge you. Money will let you upload your videos. Upload your your PDFs, your texture, other materials or audio, and you can create a course today, and you can start helping people today, and you could start burnishing your reputation as a trainer today. So that's my biggest piece of nice Mike, including piece of advice is, don't wait any longer. Create, Of course. Get it up, Get it out there. Start refined. Now, don't post a video unless you're happy with it. You don't have to have the fanciest Hollywood production. This is just a little TV behind me in a $48 video clip. I'm in a small little closet right now. You don't have to have Steven Spielberg production values. People need to hear you. Clearly. There needs to be decent lighting, and you've got to have good ideas that are going to help them. If you have that, you have all you need to create your own online training course today, and that's a crucial first step into making you a trainer in the virtual world and the real world. I'm T. J.
