1. Introduction: Hi, I'm Jeff. Open the big game hunter and welcome to my new class on this skill share about starting a new position. You know, I worked in executive search for more than 40 years. Full booth at Fillmore, 1200 full time positions, plus consulting Islamists in the course of my career. And the fact of the matter is, having worked in search for as long as I did, I also helped people transition into new roles. I've coached them now in new jobs to help them perform at a high level. When you start a new job, people often have unrealistic expectations of what to expect. Starting a new role. That's really what this video is designed to dio is remind you that nothing is gonna be perfect in. So I want you to get started If you haven't started yet. Getting Started in Your New Job Part 1 Your First 30 Days: obviously the Boston each are have a want to do in the first day Who? The first days that how you get started. But usually what we'll start off with is you're gonna go through new hire orientation, get on board and complete a bunch of paperwork. And you know, that's a day number one will meet with your new boss, and he or she is going to talk with you about some of the things that they'll want you to dio, and you start working on a plan for yourself over the first few months beforehand, there's a little bit of homework that you can dio and beforehand. The simplest thing I would suggest is take a little time to review in your mind some of the situations we've started. New jobs have introductions to people and business. So what's the back room? So you want to be able to give them a sound of 32nd presentation about who you are, what you've done previously, where you were and how it might plug into the organization. This is really like the only time I could think of an elevator pitch be useful, but not in the traditional sense It's a sincere statement without a lot of hokey to it that talks about what your previous background waas. So that's that before you walk in the door, you want to spend some time understanding their business story this first part of time and usually what from manager is going to talk with you about doing is getting acclimated to the environment. So it's getting together with cola socially and professionally, doing some internal that working, and perhaps they have a plan for you. Obviously, if they have the plan, you follow that plan, and he's far working on over delivering. So usually they're not going to throw into the deep end of the pool to see if you swim. Usually they're going to give you a surrealistic projects. The work on the things that work on and he wanted be ableto over deliver during that you want to get together with new pal leaks and understand what the rules of the road or they're the things that were said in the things that are unset. You want to understand review criteria, how they're gonna measure your success over that 1st 90 days. Can you identify someone or is there a pervert him and thoroughly. Where you Mike and a member? Yes. Lots of questions. Seriously, You know, a lot of people think that they walk into new jobs and they're supposed to know everything . Make sure you have the option of getting onto your bosses counter from for 10 or 15 minutes for a call, a meeting, skype, whatever. Just get questions answered. Tranq your successes so that here comes the end of 19 days, you have a way of measuring success. You can talk about it. Tended Lee with with her boss. So that this way, you know, thinking on her feet extemporaneously and missing a lot of obvious things. Last animals say is you built the network over this period of time. Keep in contact with him. Not because you should be out there changing jobs, Not it'll. I want you to a win in her new role, but they might be resource is that you can ask questions off in order to ensure that you do over the liver that you do perform at a high level and that you achieve a lot. Remember? I gotta tell you, most of you forget this. You think you have to figure things out on your own. Successful people all have allies and coaches members in the light that they could ask for advice, get input from that, have great questions that you're asking so that they could deliver the high level. 3. Getting Started in Your New Job Part 2 Your Second 30 Days: So if you haven't seen part one, go back and watch Part one because that's the 1st 30 days. This is the next SEC 31 to 60. So the thing I want you to start off with is just thinking about your adapting to something . And they still feel some stress about this being new and not being perfect, that we're starting to feel a little disappointment. You know, there's a thing that I learned the low time ago that people put all their hopes and dreams into the new role, and they expect it to be perfect and nothing in life. Everyone's so just recognize that this is pretty normal. There are gonna be little hunts and disappointments that start taking place. It doesn't mean that you made a terrible decision. It just needs that reality is setting in, and imperfections are showing up. Get some feedback from your boss, talked with them on a regular basis. In my first video, I suggested she didn't get 10 or 15 minutes with him daily for a while to get Aurier that now you just want to have regular feedback sessions with them where you're getting some input from them. about how you do it get so coolly with so that they sway. We were talking with your boss. You could tell them about your successes so far on make them feel good about having large. Those successes should be primarily related to the plans that the two of you have agreed on during your only need ings with one another for how you're going to. What's the work on once you're on board? After all, they're the ones that are telling you what outcomes they're looking for and hopefully, why you want to be. Bolivar continued. Alert. You're in a new environment. You're trying to get information about how things were done. So keep doing trainings orientations. You start looking at policies and procedures again about how things get done. Continue to meet with your colleagues about the rules of the road in the firm because now, true in hey may have for gotten some of the things that you were told at the beginning, so it's good to go back and just confirms of things. Another thing that you want to be doing is getting feedback from the people that you're working for your in internal group. Let's say you're an exterior external consultant. You've got clients that you're supporting, whether their internal or external, and you won't be getting feedback from them. I'm not talking about a big dramatic process he may find if I ever coached you. Nearly a few me ask how my new is so far just a za way of getting quick, spontaneous feedback from the people that, like hope she could do the same thing with the people that you're serving so building on the 1st 30 days, This is the next section of time for being successful. 4. Getting Started in Your New Job Part 3: so I want to start off with the promise of by now, each of use feel uncomfortable with one another or more comfortable. And there's beginning of the tendency to start acting like I'm gonna use a stereotype Year old Mary couples that start taking what another for Grant. So I want to remind you that you were still You can still have the honeymoon, even if this time in your new job. But it's really up to you to put in the drive in the energy to do it. So the contained by meeting with your boss regularly and getting feedback and continue meeting with other people in the organization with whom you've been providing service to elicit information from them and get feedback from them. One of the mistakes many of you made along the way in the job search was not really sustaining the network. And those I want to encourage you to reach out the folks if you haven't already done so. Who are inter network of relationships, people who you tapped on the shoulder for support during your job search, thanking them now, telling them what's been going on, what you're doing. Stuff along those lines continue to record your successes. I'm gonna repeat that. Continue to record your successes so that you meet with your boss. And when it's thoughts coming to review time, you have that available. Teoh, start looking at the progress that you've made toward the goals that were set for you when you joined the organization. If you remember my first in this series I talked about your boss is going to set, then your manager is going to set them goes for you to accomplish during this period of time. You want to make sure that your on board with them so that this way you're able to demonstrate that he or she that you met what their expectations were and then you think that's starving is also to think about what you're gonna be doing next. Because my Nano you may have an idea of places of value that you could be contributing beyond simply what the initial goals were established by your boss not feel accomplished during this period of time. Get off target, Get back on target. You talk about how you think about how you got distracted from the original intention because this is the kind of behavior that concern Abba Taj. You in the future learn from our mistakes. There's no reason to beat yourself up, so these are a couple of things I would consider doing during that period of time, and I hope you found this series helpful. 5. Starting a New Job Don't Lie to Yourself: I thought I would do a video for those situations where you're starting. A new job has a way of heading off disappointment that sometimes occurs in the new row. And the issue for the disappointment more often than not, is year. You do things that give yourself problems, like around. Let me just be clear. I remember when I was married to my first wife. Yes, I'm married again. I interview much better now. My first wife, every time she was start a new job. The people she worked for for were fabulous. They were terrific. I love these people and then, two weeks later should come home and tell me that she wanted to quit what was going on with her. In retrospect, I can kind of break it down into a couple of different places. Number one is her belief that you know there'll be no stress, no headaches, no problems in the new role, that everything would be Sunshine's flowers, chocolates. And by that I'm stereotyping. There'd be no issues whatsoever with her co workers that the work was going to be delicious and everything was going to be hunky Dorry, and obviously it is, and that's self delusion. That kidding yourself became a problem for her, cause if these folks that should work for became demanding because if she was an assistant to remember, there was one job she have wish was working with the founders of a cable network, she was gonna be there. Executive assistant, had she stayed, there should be a fern wealthy woman time. But she didn't. And I'll simply say that, you know, these guys presented themselves in a nice, normal way, and she didn't have the wherewithal to listen to me when I said, Hey, look, these guys are going to have a lot of pressure on them and they're going to make the man's of you. You will get stressed and invariably that is what happened. Another problem that would show up is that all the problems of the last position would be gone. And I'll be fun, Lee happy. And it's a lie that you tell yourself and how simply say, there will always be problems. Like I did a video in a podcast not long ago, where I called attention to how often people start new jobs and there's some crisis going on in the organization or there's been a reward that's taken place from the time that they got the offer until now, and they walk in the new situations where suddenly it's not the job that they thought it waas well, sometimes, even when it is the job that they thought it waas, they didn't quite hear it. They didn't quite hear all the details because they were enamored with the person interviewing. It becomes a lie that you tell yourself that now is we're going to be happy that raised that you got satisfies all your problems. By the way, the Rays doesn't satisfy the problems. You'll us spend your income and just give you a few dollars more. Well, frankly, you're going out. Spend that, too. So I don't think that the next job is suddenly going to make you happy. And the last thing I alluded to before is they told you everything about the job. Now they may have given you the basics, but I'm going to tell you there are things that they don't tell you about in the interview , and your co workers don't tell you about it, either. A classic example is a guy that I coached who was taking a position with a small firm, and he was going to do, like, customer service work for And they didn't tell him about this part of the job where the reception went down for lunch. Well, they had this thing called ding duty ding duty was that time where the receptionist was out and the different groups would alternate on a weekly basis. Is the who would cover the receptionist when the bell was strong, struck on someone was in the reception area and the term ding duty pressing the bell. Someone has to come out. There will always be little surprises like that that will show up in the new job. And initially it's Oh, my God, I'll make just consider that you're gonna be surprised that not everything is going to be perfect that they withheld certain information from you. Just let you withheld certain information from them. It's just human nature. So I'll just say, Don't lie to yourself. The next job isn't going to be perfect. You're not gonna be happy forever. They're gonna be days where you're just gonna want annihilate people. By the way, don't do that, please. You're just gonna hate everyone. You're gonna want to quit and you're gonna feel incredibly frustrating. Become home at night stress to the gills, thinking that they lied Teoh. And in the worst place that this happens is for the person who's been at one job for a long period of time. They quit thinking that the next place is gonna be perfect. It isn't. And the statistics show people have been a one organization for a long time. The first job they go to is a short tour of duty. They learn their mistakes, they go onto the next one pretty quickly. So again, don't lie to yourself. Know that the next firm is gonna have problems to your co workers Are not always gonna be nice. The work is not always gonna be perfect. Gonna feel stress staff. You're not always going to be happy. And the reality is that's the way of life. 6. Thanks for Taking My Class: so thanks for thinking my class on skill share. I hope you find it helpful.
