About This Class

New Class in Vintage Color Mixing series! One of the challenging colors to get in watercolors is White! In this class we will have fun with color mixing and by the end of the class you will know more than 10 ways how to mix shades of white in watercolors!


In the first part of the class we will prepare a color mixing chart and then as a class project we will paint White lilies in watercolors in loose style.

During the class you will create a your own Vintage color palette and will paint loose floral composition, which later you can use for creating patterns or as embellishment for wedding invitations, greeting cards, gift tags and other stationery projects!

This class suits to anyone who enjoys painting with watercolors.

1. Introduction: Hello, I'm Nina and watercolour artists and other cauliflower. Welcome to my new glasses in a Windows flowers in order callow serious. In my previous classes, I have showed you how you can create a range of beautiful, a dreamy colors and the compliment them with they're each dark colors. Now it's time to learn how to paint the white flowers in what the colors. Sometimes it could be quite challenging to paint a white subjects in watercolors. But don't worry, by the end of this class, you will know how to mix a variety of beautiful shades of grey, which you can use later for Bayesian or white subjects. In this class, I will show you more than ten ways how you can get beautiful aggressor for paint in our wide subject. Firstly, I will have foreigner with colour mixing. And then as a class project will bend a floral, a composition with alleles, implying that our new color and mixes. This class will be when official law for students of all levels as a beginner. Supplies: In this class I will use the following materials, watercolor paper. I will use the two sheets of A4 size. My One is of our desert brand watercolor brushes. I will use well, with number 468, I, you can use any brushes which you like. We will need to watercolor palette, that is important part for glass because grabbers are one which has a quite many cells are so that you can paint. You can make them many different colors at once. Watercolor paints will use a different ways of mixing. Now why is this? So I will show you different colors which you may use for mixing a your white in what the galleries. So don't worry for sure. There are some purple Grace, Sam, greenish graces, Sam being engaged, blew Xi. So there are really many different shades of grace. And how you can create this volume. Four wide flowers is combining many differentiates out of really bail, beautiful grey colors. And in these glasses, that's what we are going learn or learn really many different ways. How you can get a beautiful shades of gray are one of the basic ways of getting her idea of gray shade say, is by mixing three primary colors, red, blue, and yellow. So by mixing them in equal proportion, so you will manage to get grey color. And by A1 quite a lot of water you will be able to make it really, really light. And as well, by changing proportions, you will change the shape of these. Great, let's test this approach and let's see how it works. In our central part of the circular we will introduce as a colours are which we are going to mix, that is cadmium yellow. I will take cadmium red. But actually for this mixes, I like in my general approach for mixing this grace out of their colors, I use, I prefer like cooler version out of red, that is magenta. And this end desired color is going, we are going to take as blue, ultramarine blue oropharyngeal turbine. So here we have our three primary colors. And now let's see how it works. One, so we will start there with color mixing. You need to remember that forgetting this really beautiful light shades, you will need to dead quite a lot of water. And I start with yellow. Then I will add a bit of cadmium red and ultramarine blue. And you can see there's a mixture is quite read, but I keep on adding ultramarine blue. And now it starts to get already more like bluish with quite a lot of water. Let's have a look that is like more like purple color. Then I will start it a bit more. A bit more of cadmium yellow, and it turns more like greenish gray. Here is the shade. Then I will add a bit more of cadmium red and it turns into warmer rain. And then again, I will add a bit of ultramarine blue. And here you can see the amount of grace you can get also by adding more water is going to be more diluted. And you can see that it's going to be a pale. Even Baylor and dividends are like later is that is already up to use once you have got that color shade which you like. So this one's look more like yellowish, greenish. This more like purple. This is more balanced one. Let's add a bit more. Offer it and it's again, you can notice that its turns more like into red. So just play. And once you have reached us at color shade which you like, and then you can add more water and you will get more diluted and softer color and a bit more of ultramarine blue. And it's going to be like these really cool gray. And then let's add a bit more of yellow, a bit warmer, more red. So here we have really a variety of different shades of grace which you can dilute. And you will see that they are getting really, really transparent. And, and other ways that you can choose other three primary colours. For example, I can show you with my favorite ones is that same yellow, cadmium yellow. This time I will take my agenda as for my red color and ultramarine blue. And let's see what the, which makes sure we can get out of these colors. So yellow. And I had quite a lot of water then, a bit of magenta and a bit of ultramarine blue. I imagine, color just on the very tip of my brush. So it should be a really watery mixture and now it's still missing. I would say it's missing a beat of yellow because you can see that it's more like purple. And now it's turning into more like greenish color. Green, yellowish like warm shades of gray, and a bit more of magenta, and a bit more of ultramarine blue. So it takes a bit time. Two you will get, is that it will turn into gray. But at some point you will reach. So here it's really already dark. But we can see now it's really like purple gray. And I will add a bit more of yellow here, a bit more. So you can get there by changing my idea to show you that by changing this primary colors, you can get many differentiate so of grace. Even a blind only this approach, pinkish. So really, really great. And this is a bit warmer. The idea is that you take three primary colors and they could be different ones. You can play with different yellows, with different blues and reds. And you will get this gray mixture that the ones as I will neutralize each other. And you will get a lot of variety of different shades of gray. 5. Mixing Complementary colors to get shades of White: Let's have a look at another way of getting grace. We know that the complimentary pairs of colors, they also neutralize each other and in such way, also you can get the exam grades. These pairs of colors are going to be orange and blue, red, and green, and yellow, violet. Let's check whether it's through and out of these complimentary colors. We also can get some shades of grey. Let's start there with blue and orange. For this, I will use this top table. And this first day sectors. I am carrying them with colors which I'm going to mix. So in this way, in this case, that is cadmium orange and ultramarine blue. Okay? And now let's have a look. Once what will happen, the ones we will start to mix em and ultramarine blue. So at the moment it's quite orange. I will add a bit more of ultramarine blue, more wireless. So I will add a bit more of orange. Bit more awful drama in blue. So it's still more like violet color. I will need a bit more of orange. So it takes some time till you will get exactly beautiful gray color. So now it starts to get more like grey, a little bit more of orange. So I think that it is quite nice gray. But I will add a bit more of ultramarine blue. I think I like more like cooler shade. Malek turning towards I think that lets check. So here I start and you can see that it's quite gray and it's quite dark gray. And what I will do the next second brush, I will start to add water. And it will start to move it this way. And you can see that it's getting Baylor. And here we can see how it will be diluted state. So yes, from this two colours, we can get this beautiful shades of grey. Let's have a look at another pair of a complimentary colors. So this time I will use a cadmium yellow. And while it touching the sections and then I'd get really beautiful bleeds. But anyway, that's why it sounds even for your own reference. And so do not mind the four, you get these kind of bleeds set. So it's watercolors and sometimes it happens. Let's mix here. I'm using cadmium yellow and a bit of violet while it is stronger color. So first, start with yellow and bit by bit and add violet will start as opposite ways. And while it like you will need to use a radial, lots of yellow in other to neutralize the violet. Here where we start to get some kind of gray color. Now it's turning into wireless. I will need to add more yellow. Now it's more like warmer shade, a bit more of wireless. That was too much. But yeah, I think that probably like this color. And let's try. That is quite warm, shades of grey. You can see this way. And now I will add a bit more of what we will get a pale version of this color. So yes, we have got another shade of grey. And now let us check another pair of complimentary colors that is going to be red and green. I will use cadmium red bead work. And there's a green. I have one color which is called green. So I will use this green. I mean, it could be also Sap Green. Who cares green or they're so our original green. So my one is just the name is green. And let's see what we will get there by mixing these two colors. I'm starting with cadmium red. And then I started beat by beat green. And let's see. I will tell you, without wasting so much time from out of these two colors is difficult though. Get really beautiful grey. That it's going to be turning all the DYAMAND the words like warm brown, more or less, like it's going to be brownish. Let's say. I add the water to see there. Color. So you will get this, this kind of shape. It's quite warm, Brown. And what would be the alternative if you would like to get the users is a complimentary pair of colors and would like to get some beautiful gray color. Let substitute as ease warm shades for cooler aversions our offerings, that is going to be my agenda. Or you can use Opera pink, orbit arose that or integrate on rows. All these shades are fine. And for green, I am going to use emerald green. If you have watched my glass out on mixing beautiful window edge colors, you know that I really like this pair of colours. Magenta was emerald green. They give really, really beautiful where ID of shades of gray and other colors. If you still haven't tested as a color mixers, which you can get out of this two colors. I suggest you to watch that Gaza and do experiments with color mixing. So I start there with magenta and I add bit by bit emerald green. So we are getting more violet color. And by adding more MRL greens and it starts to turn more like cool gray color with pinkish purple shade. Now, xat is already too much. I think that it starts to turn into greenish color. So I will add a bit more of magenta yellow color, which I was looking for. Look how beautiful these graze. Really beautiful shade. And let's add the water to see how it will look like once we will dilute it. This looks really beautiful. I offer you also to check out another version of color mixing, how we can get the beautiful graze. This time are we will use one of the colors which we have used before, that is ultramarine, blue, and orange we will substitute there with burnt sienna. Color is quite close to orange. So let's see what we will get out of this two colors. Isn't this exciting to mix these different colors and to get so many beautiful shades of grey and ultramarine blue. So let's start first though with burnt sienna. And a bit of alternating glue. Starts already. Actually, look, I have got already that beautiful gray, what we are looking for. Really, really beautiful, really beautiful shade. And then I had a bit of water to see how it will look like in they looted, state. Really beautiful shades of grey. And let's have a look at one more pair of colors. For this, I will use cadmium red. That is also quite interesting color combination. And as for our second color, I will take as a color which is called blue, horizontal. Or if you have some kind of Boolean blue, you can take that color. And let's see what will happen. Water and a bit more of this blue bead, more that it's still quite red. And now it's turning into bluish, grade, really beautiful color. And let's have a look here. We have got also some really beautiful gray. So you can play with the sum also warm shades of red, cadmium red. And we try to mix it with some different blues which you have. But it should be like cool blue color, for example. Or terminal blue won't you won't get these gray because odorant blue is like warm blue color. So it will turn more towards some kind of wireless purple color. So have a look, really, really beautiful, bluish-gray. Don't you find the, all these shades of greys are really beautiful and fascinating. I think that it's really amazing how mixing these pairs of colors, you can get this, this variety of grace, also by jet engines or proportions of each color, you can get to differentiate these Grace. So in fact, it's like unlimited amount of grace which you can get by mixing these pairs of colors. 6. More Color Mixing Fun!: Now I would like to show you another way of getting beautiful grey colors. As that is. For example, sometimes in the shadows of flowers so that it's more for like for if you're painting some botanical flowers in loose style, I would say that is so important that we see these great mixtures are which I have showed you that it would be quite, quite enough. But sometimes for botanical flowers or you may need in the shadows as a gray shade would be still quite light, but at the same time, darker. I mean that once you will like to make a dark shades out of these mixtures, then they are going to be really, really dark gray small like this way. So one of the ways to get beautiful grey shades that is, using blue, blue colors, which are containing white, chalky white. Mmm, let's see what I am talking about. What we will do now. There will dry checkers, the same pairs of colors. So what will happen if we will make some ultra marine? What we will, we will make our blue cell with burnt sienna and cadmium orange. So I will use orange for orange for here. And burnt sienna in this case. And in this case. Okay. And for blues, I will use the color which is called lavender. And that is actually is a mixture of ultramarine blue while it and white. So you can see that it's quite best. El calor. And four here as well. Color boxing. And second, blue, which I'm going to test is that it is going to be a royal blue, royal blue that is ultramarine blue and white. So if you will check because I pigments which are used. So if you have like titanium white or white, you can actually mix your drum Marina with white and you will get something similar. So, so let's check out what kind of a gray so we can get out of this colors. That is too much orange. I am in water. And then I will start. The lavender is already turning. More beautiful color. And then I get quite interesting shade of gray. While it, I would say exist. So this color is quite thick. You can see that if I will add a bit more, so it's quite the color, but at the same time, it's still transparent. So compared, for example, to this, to this dark color. So that is a really great way of getting gray. So for foreshadows, and let's have a look at what we will get there by mixin burnt sienna with lavender. It's warm, gray and now it's starting to turn into quite cool shade of grey. So here is my gray. And probably if I will add a bit more of low under idle turn cell here, this, these gray. And if I will add a bit of water. So here you can see how it looks like delimited. And let's have a look at one more mixture that is going to be the same, orange and royal blue. That was too much of royal blue. I will add a bit more of orange to neutralize it. And now it was too much of orange. Bit more blue. I think, like this. And here you can see now that is quite nice color. So the beauty of these traits is that in the shadows they give you a quiet dark tone, but still keeping quiet light. So here you have another beautiful shade of gray. And one more colour mixtures that is going to be a burnt sienna and a bit of royal blue. It wasn't a beat. That was too much. Okay, so that is too much of burnt sienna and leave more of royal blue and probably a bit more. Yeah. So here is another shade of beautiful grey. Here we have our beautiful grain. And what else you can do is actually do this mixtures. You can add some other color. For example, let's use this final mixture. And if I will add a bid-offer, magenta, what will happen? So now to this, we now Disease a color mixture. I'm a bit of magenta. And you can get some really beautiful pinkish Gray. And I will add a bit of water. And I get the really, really beautiful shade of gray. So here it is. And what will happen, for example, if I would like to add to the previous shade. So here is this, that is a color mixture. I will add, for example, a bit more of yellow. Here I have cadmium yellow. And there will it here. So it turns into more yellowish and I will add a bit more. So it turns into more like these kind of warm shades of gray. But if I will add that was royal blue, I will add a bit more of royal blue and a bit more of yellow. So it turns into more like greenish. So here is the shape. So it's more like greenish. So that is like greenish grain. And if I will add more water and diluted. And in such way you can get there just unlimited amount of colour, shades or of grace. So just look really beautiful. These ones are really beautiful. And this one's also this really, really beautiful shades of grey which you can combine and depending which ones you would like to use. So here you have a variety of different shades of gray which you can use for a painting, your white flowers. Also, more color mixer, so which you can use for bandana for getting a beautiful shades of gray are forbidden or white flowers you can find in my glass on a winged edge flowers and learn to make such a beautiful, beautiful following the edge colors. So here, for example, we use lavender with cadmium yellow, and you can get this range of greenish grace, La, NDA with the raw sienna. You can get disease warm grays. And also by mixing in Rwanda with emerald green, you can get these kind of bluish grace. So gesture exists class for more color mixing ideas. And I hope you have enjoyed the color mixing enter. You have had fun playing with scholars. And now let's move on to our practice. Bart. 7. White Loose Lilies in Watercolors: Now let's put in practice our color mix it and Bain SAM, kind of simple composition of with white flowers. I would get inspired out of my artwork are with lilies. And let's see what we can get something in low style. Here I have my colors, laughter from the previous color mixing. That is going to be that this law vendor with orange lender with a burnt sienna, royal blue with orange, and we say cadmium yellow and royal blue with burnt sienna and a bit of magenta. So I will leave these shades as AR. And probably because like I will try to add these kind of pinkish colors, greenish. So I have already Zambia in on my palette. What I'm missing is some kind of neutral graze. For this, I will use, like the basic way of mixing, that is cadmium yellow. By mixing three primary colors. Then a bit of cadmium red. And BBDO for ultramarine blue. Zed is don't match. I think that it's turning more into red. I see it like this. So I would add a bit more trauma and blue because I like when it's more like bluish, this kind of gray. It. Let's have a look at the flower. So actually that is six petals, three in R1 and then three older like lower level. And here it's the same. And let start with painting. What I would like also is it'll leave some bar, some areas of white paper here somewhere. So jet, that is just the interpretation. Very loose. And so the idea is just to recreate the shape. And I will use this mixture which I have bit of wireless. And first I will painter with water. This battle. Will you hear? My reference? Is this way. Then lower pedal going into zed direction in this way. And four here, one more. Like this. And what we can see here, it says that there's a flower center is more like greenish. So let's add a bit more of green. My greens at this royal blue, orange, cadmium orange, and the yellow. And I would say that i will mix a bit more royal blue is I will turn so as you can see it. So that is royal blue and a bit of a bit of cadmium yellow. So here it is going to be more green color. And I'm missing some blue color. So just quite diluted, quite diluted, ultramarine blue. And I will add in some areas this blue shades. So just some lines to give some definition. That is quite diluted. Ultramarine blue. Here in the lower part doesn't also I keep a one brush just with water to dilute what I'm painting. So z is way at the moment, I will leave it as it is. Probably. So I'm adding that was second layer. All like second Descartes of. So here it is. And then now four this side, let's make another one. Looking in the opposite direction. For this, I will use a mixture of so that was my mix of bright primary colors. That is a cadmium yellow, cadmium red, ultramarine blue. So here it is, this beautiful shade of grey. I would add a bit more of ultramarine blue because I like when it's cooler gray. And then let's paint another one are the only thing I would add. Also while it will be wet, I would like to add the beautiful color mixture. We have got a width that is blue with cadmium red, in my case, this horizontal blue. And also if you have a room low is also going to be quite beautiful color mixture, so just dry with cadmium red. And here we get this beautiful bluish-gray. Okay, so let's start with bigger brush. I am going to dilute it. For me is a scholar looks too dark. To be honest. So here is a little bit bluish. I will try with some water with this bluish one. So that is just my interpretation of their flower shape. I see what I see and then I just repeat it. So that is our vendor and orange. So I have 18 zed direction and they still missing several battles. I will add some pinkish That is a mixture of royal blue with burnt sienna. And there will be two of my agenda. So here just with brushstrokes yeah, transmit into shape. And what I'm missing is more blue. I will use this mixture of horizontal blue with cadmium red. And for here, I will add some cooler shades. And you can see it's a really, really beautiful four here. And this is one. So to make it a bit cooler, ones that they will get dry, we'll add a bit more of this standards and it will, I think that it will change itself. Ok, let's place are also the third flower looking into z direction to make it a bit more like. Worries. For this, I will use another color mixture that is going to be yellow, which I like to set is yellow and a bit of violet. Maybe more off oil it. Maybe tomorrow file it and a bit more of cadmium yellow. And I think a bit more of cadmium yellow. That is going to be warm shaped. And I will make it a bit more or further. Bowl shape does at the say, horizontal or you can use several long blue or some other blue with cadmium red. Just a bit. Yeah, really, really beautiful color. And while this one is still wet, I also, we'll add a bit of z's color, which I have mixed and some kind of lines here or here. Part of this battle. So I'm missing actually one that'll bought. I think it doesn't matter. So that probably it has hidden from us. Probably it for 0, I can make it just some hinge. So it almost invisible. Year, really beautiful and I can mix. The only thing also I would like to tell you that one says is mixture has got like stable. So they start to split into the color, into those several colors. And so that's why you, before adding again the color, you need to mix it so that to be sure that your color has been mixed quite well. Okay. So I have created, I think is that it was this mixture. And now it's time to add folio, Russia and the ones who will add folio. Sure you will see how everything will change. 8. White Loose Lilies. Adding Foliage: And for folio Shall I will mix lavender. So I'm already mixing everything, what I have shareable, my valid, and just adding some some more lives. I think that soul that we aren't going to add. I think that's all. I'm going to add some filler flowers because our main accent is going to be our lilies. And now with horizontal, I will mix it there with a bit of yellow to get some green. But this green is too strong. I will need a bit of cadmium red. So actually it's other way of like primary colors, blue, red, and yellow. And here I have another muted Green. And what I want to have it a bit stronger. And Wal-Mart and then just several stamens. So they're going out in different directions. Then another flower that is going to be this way. And four here. So just several lines. And what we can see here, like at the very end, they have this part. So we can paint it as well. It's like really long and shape. So I do not give the whole definition, but it's just the hinge. And we will need a bit of burnt sienna color, which I had this at this, I think royal blue with Bernstein. And actually, and I will add a hinge here on the top. And then with water, I will dilute it. So here we have probably a bit darker one, some very edge.
