1. Two ways to make a video: Hello. My name's Rob Glass and I'm a BBC trained video to enlist. And I reckon there are two ways to make a video. The 1st 1 You make it the second way you could pay somebody else. Now, I've been this somebody else for around 20 years, Onda slowly but surely have begun to sort of realize that paying somebody else all the time isn't really fair to the whole point of this set up these courses is, too, that you take control now. Creeped me if I'm wrong. But over past few seconds you've been assessing. They haven't you? It's all so you've been sort of work out. Whether you know, a man in a shirt in front of a blackboard with chalk is really the right man to sort of show you how to sort of grab the power of video. You were wondering whether you know you're going to invest your time in this course, and that's fine. What I'm interested in, though, is that you haven't wondered what camera I'm using. Right, Because you don't care. You don't guess Long is good enough. You don't care what sort of camera it is. And this is a huge point. In fact, it's the whole driving force behind this course. There's something else much more important. Yes, yes. Okay, Now you want to know I am actually filming it. Using an iPad mini in an iPhone would do just as brilliant a job. And these things edit as well. So basically, they're a TV studio in the palm of your hands. They're the future. Definitely the right horse to back, in my opinion. But, like I just said, that doesn't matter. You don't care about the kind of camera I'm using on your right not to. Because all this camera and editing stuff, it really plays second fiddle to the something which is much more important. So what could that be? 2. The most important thing: What's the most important thing about video? Some say it's your choice of camera. I don't think so. Some say it's your choice of microphone. I don't think so. Some say it's your choice of tripod. I don't think so. Some say it's a choice of lighting. I don't think so. Note for me to find out the most important thing about video. You need to look elsewhere. Your audience. Why'd you want them in the first place? And what do you want them to do? And then you've got to get into their minds, sit in their seats and realize that they're totally reliant on what you're showing them. They can't change that at all, and you think they'll be a little bit grateful. But no, they're brutally honest. If they don't like it, they're going to tell you on their vital the vital. Without an audience, you have nothing. Oh, that's deep. I look at it a little bit like writing a letter. I mean, yes, you can obsess about the pen. You're right. You're writing within the quality of the paper. But deep down, the most important thing about a letter is, who are you writing to and why, and how do you engage with them? And I think it's exactly the same with video 3. Pop your hat on: so the audience is the key. What I want you to do now is put your audience hat on and watch this next video off. Selected it fairly randomly from YouTube for a little while ago. Chopped it down to a minute. Nothing too dramatic happens, but one or two things are worth taking note off afterwards and just sort of monitor as an audience how you feel watching it. 4. Please watch this: the tapes nowadays bring a wide straight through. No one goes down. Everything you say Type, right, union together. Don't come. But together Distance angles way That's a boy. Go around. You say I would pass. Nothing coming. This wife Does anybody know what we put the main force? You know why? 5. How did it feel?: I think the video footage off the trip around the building size very interesting. Interesting, because the later taking it says around 30 seconds in. So it is an admission that said the first time someone's gone out with a video camera and this is the sort of thing I got when I first got my camera. I think it's all the thing. We tend to go and shoot. We just keep going round and round and round around. The trouble is, as an audience, it makes you feel nauseous. Um, as they think I mentioned before, three audiences totally reliant on the person giving them the video. Now, the person giving us this video put your head in a vise, went have another with that. Have a look over there. Have a look over there. Where? That. There you go. Okay, enough already. Then 1.1 chap mentioned the yellow pipes. You think? Where is this yellow part that night? Looking around, I think it's done there. Can I have a look? No, you can't. Ah, and it made you want to stop watching. Basically, however, there is clearly an industry built around video noticed. So the conclusion is that if we film in a way, we're unfamiliar where that makes you feel ill. So the conclusion is, let's film in a way we're familiar with, and that's my second fundamental foundation of fantastic video film in a way you're familiar with. So I just begs the question, How do we experience the world? 6. Draw what you saw: So how do we view the world? Well, let's find out through this little exercise wherever you are. I bet there's a clock quite nearby. You might be in a room that might be one on the wall somewhere nearby. Or you could be outside or whatever you watch. Maybe not on your wrist on someone else's, but I bet there's a clock quite nearby. What we do is have a look at that clock and then draw what you saw. Now you might want to use ifit's latest iPad. I phoned. Have a look at the notes. There's a nice way you can sort of scribble just just very quickly scribbled down what you saw. Alternatively, good old pencil and paper will still do the trick on police report. So have a look at the clock and then draw what you saw. And then we'll regroup again afterwards and have a look at what you drew 7. Great video shots: Okay. How did you get to him? Well, it does. The room you're in. Look a little bit like this. Nice picture. Um, if so, what exactly did you draw that? Sort of what I'm interested in. I'm gonna park that until the next course. But what did you draw? Did you draw? Oops. Cost me a fortune? Did you draw all of that? No, you didn't, because I was a little bit devious. I said, look at the clock and then draw what you saw. I sort of pushed your attention towards the clock, but I didn't say draw the clock. I said, draw what you saw, but what you drew because I push your attention there. This is what you do, isn't it? Just get rid of the rest running out quick. So this is the kind of thing you drew a nice close up of the clock. You could have drawn a wide shot, but because of the way I lead you into it saying, have a look at the clock and draw. You saw you gave yourself a close up of the clock. And that's something we're going to discuss in the next course. But I'm almost certain now for actually how you drew, because what we have here in front of you is a Polaroid of the inside of your mind. It's how you visualized the room through my instructions, and it was a close up of the clock so that have a close look at that? How have you drawn it? Have you drawn its, you know, all shaky or blurred everything? Or is it a nice clear Chris picture? As in, How do you see the clock? Was it all shaky, or was it nice and steady? Study on What's the clock? Sort of at an angle. Was the 12 Not really. It the very top of the clock? Of course not. You put the 12 of the top because that's how we see the world. No matter from what angle we position ourselves, we give ourselves a nice level image, and that's the second way we perceive the world steady and level. Did you get out of your chair or wherever you were drawing form and so slowly zoom into the clock? No, because that would be weird. You just gave yourself from wherever you were a nice close up image and so we don't zoom. That's kind of alien thing. When you think about there's no need for it because our eyes situated the way there are in our faces. The sort of the image we get is a nice wide shot we don't tend to, but we don't see a vertical block of video. So when we're filming, we'll film it in a nice wide way. So more like that, this vertical way of video. So that's the way we perceive the world. A steady level. No zooms on wide. So that's the way we're going to videos. Well, just one last thing when you look at your clock, how long did you need to look for before you knew what you were going to draw? 23 seconds? Yes, that's how much we look at things for two. We have the information that we perhaps move on to looking at the next thing. So we're using video, probably gonna use two or three seconds because that's how we see the world. However, with kind of sculptors at the minute and when we're out Hunter gathering from our video, we need bigger blocks. Could never quite sure how big the blocks going to be. So you know, the bigger the better. And I film for 10 seconds. Oops. Nearly onto me. There. So that's how we're going to make our video study level. No zooms. Film it Wide filth. 10 seconds. 8. Filming task: in a moment. I'm going to give you your first task and you're going to film something. So what's the most important thing to consider when you're filming something? No, not the camera. It's still the audience. Remember, the audience don't really care what sort of camera you've got so long as it's good enough they're more suited what you're saying and and also what you're showing them. If you show. Show them things that make me feel ill, They're also not gonna watch. So you want to show them things in the way they see the world. Remember, that involves things being steady, steady level wide, No zooms. And we'll be using three seconds. What? We're gonna hold it for 10 seconds. So this is your task Film a watch. Steady level wide. Newseum's help for 10 seconds. Okay. We do need to have a look at how the camera works first, though, so let's do that now. 9. The iPhone/iPad camera: As you know, I'm a huge fan of the iPad to film with, as well as the iPhone. Of course, the film and they edit and the whole thing is just a beautifully simple process. And it's this simplicity that makes this whole thing possible. I think so. Filming with my iPad As we know we need to film wide and steady so eso we don't want to film long ways. We want to film that away. Now, if we hold it with square button on the left you see the camera Is this little fella down their hold on the left? A big chance we're gonna put our hands in front of it. So I need to hold the little square home button on the right hand side. That way, I'm not going to interfere with the camera. Now we're gonna talk about Mike phones in a later course, amongst other things. But the on board mic phones really good that on the iPad mini, though they are on the opposite end from the square button. So for holding it steady like this, which is the temptation trying not to touch the screen because all touch sensitive, there's a big chance we're gonna get really muffled audio. So I've kind of worked out a way of just cradling it in a hand in my hand like that on then , touching the screen, please myself, on that one, we'll be talking about cases and things that that becomes a problem later as well. So next thing is we need to film something. And as I mentioned for him, quite mention my phone yet the phone, the microphones that the same end as you. You talking to same enders, the square button. But they're much easier to hold because they've got a case and she's a whole life. Actually, you know what? That's not so bad, either. Perhaps that is the new way that you can't see the screen quotes. Well, anyway, I'm sure you'll find a way. Just watch out for the microphone on the end. Eso Let's get filming this watch, shall we? Luckily, I have lighting stands coming out my ears, so just try and put your watch on something so it's on a murder or something. So it's not on the table. I'll show you why. So here's my iPad. Uh, there we are. We just focusing on that. So we've got the give the camera up. They're just press on that and then we'll weigh in business, then down on the bottom Here, we've got what sort of mode it's instant tends to go to photo straight away. So just like a little wheel you can roll down or just press on. Video member gone to video So there we are, holding it steady, cradling like I said, And if you could just see this little there, will Yellow Square keep trying to focus in on things and it's always readjusting. It's like a little excited puppy, which is, you know, good on the basis of not really good, because imagine the watch is actually the person trying to interview, for example, Maybe we do one of those later where we will be, and it keeps focusing on something behind its hunting around, readjusting, trying to please you. And actually, it's frustrating because you getting this really fluffy, inaccurate picture which is juggling around. So what's the one thing we have to do? It's just pressed for three seconds on the the part of the picture you want Teoh Castro attention on Set, which in which case is the watch face. I'm just put pushing my finger on the watch face than the yellow box flashes for a little bit. And then suddenly we got this box appear, saying a F lock, automatic exposure, automatic focus locks that's actually locked off. Then it's no longer jumping around on rather than the fluffy, jittery picture. We've got this Chris professional looking video. So what we need to do is hold that for steady and level for 10 seconds with no zooming. However, let me just over this one more thing. Say, there's little, very faint sunshine. If you ever wanted just to just slightly, you don't have to such sunshine itself anywhere on the screen will do. You can just adjust the brightness. I don't tend to use that. I just tend to just press again and let it make its own mind up together about the light and colors and everything. So let me just go in a little bit closer to show you exactly sort of what I mean. There we go, and then you see how the clock on the blackboards and focuses press on the watch faces what I want you to do Look, Chris batters that I'm just gonna press on the record button told a steady and level is you count in too good at the minute. 10 seconds so that we just hold my breath of that one. Don't hold ref 10 seconds so that just countries sometimes guided elbow on a table or something like that. Maybe not talk through it is where would help. So the number of the top Just give us a clue that I've got 20 seconds. There's a good 10 seconds of steady ish, steady as I can make it footage. And that's all we want to do for now. And then what we got was a little short cut here. Which takes us to the footage we just made. Just go back to my home page. They go to photos, we go to a album called Camera Roll. The last thing on their will be the footage we took. Steady as I could level as I could. No zooming. It was wide to start with and have held it for 10 seconds. 10. Postcards: How did you get home? Did you get something like this? And was it? You know, the drill? Course it waas. I think what we now have is Thea postcard writing equivalent off sending a postcard with just one word on it, which isn't much use unless it's a very, very good word. So what we now need to do is look at writing sentences with these words on that involves something called editing. Now. Then, there's two editing APS on fan off, one more than the other one we're going to be using here for this session to get a started is I movie, the free, complimentary app that comes with the iPad and the iPhone but further down the line, one of the subsequent courses. If this starts to get a little bit frustrating, remember, it is free, though. Get a bit frustrated. There's hope on the horizon because there's something else another editing app. But I think the difference is a little bit between like, I movies a bit like a mope ed on this one I'm gonna be talking about the subsequent course is like driving a Harley Davidson. So if you get a bit frustrated with this one. Don't worry. Help is on hand. So what we're gonna do is we're gonna have a look at our movie, and you know how we got at least 10 seconds of our watch. Well, let's just shrink that down to three seconds because that's how the audience views the world tends to be. Let's get it down to three seconds. Have a look at various ways of doing that. Using I'm moving. 11. iMovie: Here we go, then. This is how to edit using I movie minds already installed. A lot of the newer versions have it already installed. But if it's not just going, look in the APP store and you'll find I movie downloadable for free. So I'm going to show you how to do two bits of editing gonna drop the audio and then we're going to export it. So that's sort of four things I need to do. Let's open the APP first I movie, and this is what you'll get. Little sign, They're saying, Create project. So actually press on that. Just want a movie. Onda. And then there's a new show, new sheet showing you all the different videos you've got. But down at the bottom here we've got create movie. Andi, There we go. We've got our own first product window has started, So we got window here where we can look at our footage and I finished film. We've got certain place here. We can select all the stuff we want to put in the finished film we can arrange are finished film down here at the bottom, which is what we're going to call the timeline now avoid is looking at this watch. So five press on video and recently added, in this case, we've got this little sort of scrolling list of all the video we've done. Now, each one of those is one video. It tells you how long each one is along the side. I don't really like this way of explaining it. Got a little pictures along the way to find a little bit confusing, but there we are on my watch is right down at the bottom. If I just highlight that on, then I'm just gonna bring the whole lot in and then edit with it. So it's just this is a plus there and there we go. It's now in my film, we've got a little line of video, and underneath it we've got a little line of wavy white line. That's where the audio is. We've got 26.7 seconds at the minute, so I went slightly over the 10 seconds. But that's all right. One slight difference if you're editing with an iPhone is that there isn't quite so much room on an iPhone, so they've arranged it slightly differently. Instead of having the videos to one side. You have to press on the plus button to the left hand side, and that will take you to the where all the videos that kept a sort of a window in front of our window sort of things. So then you could just press on video and recent added, going to find it footage that way in my clock for two years, right? A top highlight it press on. Plus, and that will come back to the main window in much the same way as the iPad. So this this line down the center, that's your now line. So we're right at the end. If we move it right back to the beginning, we consult. Start playing it. Don't be tempted him to them. So I think what I'm gonna do is I'm going to try Teoh, get with the second hand, hits 12 oclock and then just three seconds after that. So I can I let it play, Or I could just sort script forward. And if you watch hello. If you watch the second hand as I scrape through, it's going to speeding. Long is getting near there, so it's about their so What I want is one of the beginning to be about right on the white line. There's two ways of doing this. First is like drawing a little pair of curtains over the bit of window you want to see. So if you just tap on that, then they got these little yellow curtains young was gonna roll along to their. Unfortunately, I move is gonna be slightly irritating on just the white lines going to jump to their Andi . That's no help to everything. I'm just looking back in this window again, looking for the second hand at 12. So it's about there and then I can play it. 123 Then I can the white lines going to jump again. But if I just pick on the end of watch the second hand, go back in there, I'm going back in time that about three seconds. So if I just another way to do it, just little back back. Little marker there and just they never go. Juan 23 That's my finished film. 2.9 seconds, actually, but let me just start show another editing technique, This little arrow. He'll go back a step so That's exactly where I wanted to bay. Instead of doing this role of thing and it jumping around, you can tap on it and you've got the choice of actually cutting it, like with a razor blade. So this little word here split press on that it chops it. So this bit on the end is what? I don't want him to pop that in the bin that's been down in the corner there and then it's gone. So that's my finished film again. If you're filming using the iPhone, it looks slightly different. Just highlight clip. You see, it's arranged slightly differently at the bottom. You can still press split. That doesn't have a been signed, though, so just press delete on. Behold, that's a clip done. You might be able to just hear me what feeling along in the background A will or something that may be so I want to dip that down. So the last thing I want to do before exported, it's just tap on that again and get to the audio. So instead of this scissor thing where you could split it, we go to the speaker button, and that's my audio. So let's just drop that just for the sake of argument. Down to about 2021 23%. That's good enough for me. So that's my finished film to export it after I say I'm all done. Yeah, yeah, that's my Finnish film. There we go. And we go back to this page. I've got this little option here to export. Now I like to export this too. The photos, first of all, then it could go anywhere around the world. You know, YouTube and Facebook and everything. But I liked her, Mona The block of video finished video. So I put, save video, give some options. Let's have the very best available to you to humanity. Exporting that. And now, finally, if I go back yet, that's lovely. If I go back to the home page, go to photos and find camera roll. Last thing on there will be my watch. One which is three seconds long on. That's how you edit films and export them 12. Is that it? (A: No): Wow. Look how far we've come. We've started off with blocks of video that the audience will really appreciate. Steady level, etcetera. 10 seconds long And then we started editing using I movie, bringing them down into the kind of duration you know, the sort of duration that the audience will want to see video for. We started to take control made than three seconds long. Now, course these air just single bricks. What we really want to do is still just talk that one word, although with chiseling these words, we want to start writing in sentences. So we've just about finished make great video. Just one more thing to show you. Then over in school, share premium. We've got make really great video the second of this trilogy of courses. In this we take a look at this sort of well made brick of video work out what other bricks we could used. So something like this, where are building block? Water? Main is just part of something much bigger. Different kinds of ingredients, things coming together, and that helps us engage without audience. And that's the whole point. So we need a few more courses. Do we not Andi. Speaking of which, the final course in eternity is make really, really great video, which is where we look at these different elements of video and work out how we can put it together in a way that people actually want to watch. Because that's the whole point, isn't it? So last thing to show you is the next video, which is It's a little story from a holiday, I went on, but it's just to give you an idea of sort of what we can do just around the corner. 13. Crab fishing story: When we were in the cities last year, George discovered he had a hidden talent to find out whether that was just beginner's luck . We're heading back to the island of Cresco, where it all happened. Journey's just long enough for us to realize that potentially catastrophic oversight problem is way. Last year, the crabs went crazy for dried mackerel. This year they're gonna have to make do with chopped bacon. But like every great fisherman George makes, do with what he's got. Besides, it's all really in the coaxing, seasoned crabbers suspect. It's really not all in the coaxing, perfect crab fishing limp. It's, you know, limping off the rock. Give that to a crowd. Brilliant. In hindsight, maybe using a Marine based bait does make more sense than an Italian pig. I got one, although a little bit of pancetta seems to be exactly what the crabs are missing with that Cresco diet on. So once again, the crap procession begins. We'll be eating well this afternoon, not the crabs they get put back for next year. No, there's a very nice pizza restaurant just across the beach
