About This Class

In this course you will learn your G, C and D major scales via melodic and single-string style on the five string banjo.  These scales will thereby enable you to make up things to play on songs and even write your own songs.

These particular sounds bring your banjo playing into sounds other than just your basic bluegrass, old timey sounds.

I suggest some previous playing experience is needed, basic knowledge of right hand technique and which strings to hit with each finger is assumed.

Melodic style banjo was pioneered by people such as Bill Kieth, Bobby Thompson and Carroll Best.

It is now used by banjo players such as Bela Fleck.

Melodic style banjo is particularly useful if you want to learn a variety of genres on the banjo besides bluegrass and old time sounds.  In particular fiddle tunes, classical, jazz and popular styles of music.

Single-String or what I call Closed position technique is more useful for playing in a variety of keys, as it is easier to transpose.  That will be discussed as the class goes on as well.

My background is in acoustic music-b...
