Looking at Yourself & Others with Greater Clarity Using JoHarri Window: this Insight session guides you in looking at yourself and others with greater clarity, using a really great tool called the Joe Harry Window. 2. Blind Spots & Masks & Self Awareness: We all have unconscious blind spots that were truly not aware that we have. We're figuratively blind to the things that we don't do not know about ourselves. We also have very conscious mass that we wear. We use our mass for many reasons. Some reasons are quite legitimate and others not so much. Over the past few years, most leaders in most companies have realized the importance of emotions in the workplace. E que. Your emotional quotient has become a Zim porton, if not more so than I. Q. Your intelligence quotient. Be conscious of the behavioral skills you are using when you are doing something well, your behavioral skills demonstrate your emotional intelligence. The idea is to become more self aware, so you are more in touch with your authentic self and improve relationships with others. Knowing self another's requires us to become aware of our blind spots and decrease our masks. We become aware of our buying spots through being open to non judgmental and sensitive feedback. We decrease our mass through choosing self disclosure, exposing mawr of who we authentically are. Stay with me while I demonstrate how using the Joe Harry window helps you look at yourself and others with greater clarity 3. Overview JoHarri Window: hello wisdom seeker, the corporate grown here to share insights with you on both how to increase your own self awareness and to help you better understand those individuals that you work with and interact with on a daily basis. We're going to use a tool that was developed by two psychologists back in the mid fifties. Their names were Joe Love and Harry Ingram, even though it was over 1/2 a century ago that they did their work and group dynamics. We now understand and appreciate even more because of what we know about the importance of our emotions in the workplace, our behavioral characteristics in the workplace. We know that an I Q that we have our intelligence quotients is very important. Along with, you know, in a kind of experience we have and giddiness a job, and we also know it's R E. Q. Are emotional quotient that is the makes up and comprises the soft skills that we have that really helps us to increase our effectiveness and build relationships and work better in a collaborative way with our fellow workers. We're going to use this Joe Harry window in a way that will help you understand what you can do to both increase that awareness for yourself and for others that you work with. Looking at the simple diagram, you'll show that there are certain intersections that happen that are very critical. And if you don't know about them, you probably are gonna want to see how these work. There are certain things, first of all, that I know about myself and there are other things that I don't know. Then there are things that you know about me, and there are things that you don't know about me now what happens when you look at these intersections? Well, when you follow the intersection of what I know about me and what you don't know about me, you see my masks, the facades that I put out there, the things that I do that I don't care to have you know about. Now don't get me wrong. There are many things that are personal that don't belong talked about in the workplace. I'm talking about those things that are characteristics, traits, skill sets, those things that make you who you are and contribute to the organization to the team or whatever project that you're working on. So to get rid of those masks or the things that you really want to share so that you are more effective and are a better collaborator in that team, you want to be able to expose a bit of yourself. It's in a teeter totter way. You know, you give a little information, team members get of a little information, and it's something that is quite beautiful. As it progresses, you become a team, you become members who respect each other and trust each other, and you're able to do better work. Then there's an intersection where I you know, I really don't know this, but you know that that becomes my blind spots. Now. Blind spots are problem for you because when you aren't aware of what you're blind spots are you were doing things that you know. You're not even sure that you're doing you don't know it, and because you don't know what and others do, this presents a problem for you. So this is a situation where you need to be open, open for feedback, open for feedback that you listen to. That is one way that you can overcome the blind spots that you have now there other couple intersections that are important if you look at what you know and where I know intersex, that is this open arena. It's where we understand each other and what each person's contributes and the importance of having trust is already been established and where were good in team were effective. So these different pains, if you look at this as a window and with all of its different pains, whatever you're working on or functioning in can increase. And in this case, when you're a new team, you don't know each other or new person walks in. And in trying to become part of the team when you're assimilating or blending a team, all of these things you have to learn, and you have to slowly get to know each other and understand what each person is good at in their contribution and what else you know they need to have help with, and maybe where you would be better at something and how you can assist. Then there's this last intersection, and this is what I don't know, nor do you know, and it is there that you can really produce a lot, you know, understand in who you are as an individual, having self awareness is one of the most important things that you can do to help yourself . Self awareness is important before you could know or appreciate or understand anyone else. And so please, I invite you take the time to learn about who you are. Use a tool like the Joe Hiree window. There are many others that we can work with, and I'll be willing to share those with you in the future. 4. Project Assignment Increasing Self-Awareness: this project assignment combines introspection with interaction. The idea is to spend more time not only engaging with other people but also to devote time to thinking and writing. Using the Joe Harry window as your guide, consider what you can do to become more self aware, helping you with both your blind spots and your masks. The most obvious thing to do is to work with your team and manager, along with doing something so many of us do not do enough. And that is spending time reflecting specific things you can do to help you increase your self awareness. From my perspective, are formally write down your goals, any plans that you have and priorities you have that you want to accomplish during the day , the week, the month. Writing them down somehow makes them more real to you, and you may feel even a bit more accountable, and you may even execute while being more aware of your surroundings. Next, take time to engage in self reflection. Consider being mindful. You may have heard about mindfulness. It's all about being in the present moment. Be fully present when interacting with your team members and experience what is going on inside. What is going on internally? Stop, breathe. Be in the present moment, taking time to be conscious of what you are feeling and thinking about at any given time during your day. Another thing you can do to increase self awareness and give you more insight into your blind spots and mask is to consider taking personality assessments. A few of the assessments you may already be familiar with are the disc, the Predictive Index, the Myers Briggs and Strength Finder's. These instruments are not tests. There are definitely no writer wrong answers you will receive. However, fairly good information about yourself and the data is as accurate as self report. Instruments can be given garbage in garbage out if you are honest, and don't try to beat the system that is providing only the answers you think you should give. You can learn a lot from these assessments. Make sure, however, you work with individuals who have been trained and credentialed in administering the assessments. Many more similar tools are out there. The only reason I mentioned these specific ones is I frequently used them in the past and in most familiar with their reports. Also think about keeping a journal of some type. Your journal doesn't have to be a specialized notebook in the formal sense were you document every single day? There are different ways you can journal. You can jot down what you're thinking about on Post it notes, and then store them in an envelope. Refer back to that envelope occasionally to see what you've said and if there's any kind of a pattern. I've even message myself during the day to remember significant events or interactions that have triggered some emotional response in the Do you see patterns when you read what you have written, the idea is to notice what's going on within you and around you. Consider this question during your day. Do you ever come across a certain person or persons or something? Or events that make you happier? Sad cause you to be calmer, enraged, makes you annoyed or even very pleased, encourages you to be engaged or causes you to be uninvolved. Think about those questions and others similar to that. Then ask for honest and sensitive feedback from a trusted friend, coach, mentor, manager or a team member. These are several specific things you can do to be more self aware and to be more aware of others. That is one of the reasons why the Joe Harry window is such an effective tool. 5.
