1. Welcome to this Class and What you're Going to Learn: Hi there. It's Thomas George. And welcome to this quick start guide for music production in Logic Pro TEM. So this class is designed for anyone that's brand new to logic pro. 10. And you want to learn the essentials of logic Pro today. So in this class, I'm going to give you a quick overview off the interface in logic Pro 10 that I'm going to show you how can quickly record software instruments. After this, I'm going to give you an overview off. Since that I'm going to show you the basics off recording audio and then a quick overview off apple loops and then finally saving on exporting. Like I said, this is a quick start guide. But by the end of this, you should understand the basics off logic pro 10. So you can quickly start making your own music today. So join me in this class. If you want a crash course. Quick start into logic. Pro 10 2. An Introduction to Logic Pro X: Hello. Welcome to this section where I'm going to give you a quick crash course into getting started in logic Pro TEM. So in this section we're going to look at recording software instruments, also going to have a look at an overview off Apple loops and also recording audio. And then we're going to look at saving on dancing. So in this section is just going to be a really quick overview off these different things. So if you are brand new to logic pro, you can start making your own music after watching this section. So let's first of all, have a look at the logic pro interface, and then we're going to have a look at recalling a software instrument. So let's get started on Have a look at logic pro TEM. So if we go on to file in the top left, we have two options to choose from. We have file new on New from templates. New will give us a blank project to work with, and if we select new from template, this will give us different templates we can choose, such as hip hop Elektronik, songwriter, orchestral, multi track music for picture have a few more things We can change down here as well, such as the tempo and the key signature. But for now, let's just select empty project and hit Choose. And now you'll notice we have this pop up box that appears. This allows us to choose the type of instrument that we want to start with. So we have a software instrument, so these are synthesizers and samplers that we can control with MIDI information. Then we also have audio, so this allows us to record audio. So this could be a microphone or maybe the audio from a guitar or a base or external synthesizer. Next, we have the drummer track. So logic have actually recorded a load of different drummers in different genres, and we can go through and choose different loops that have been played by these different drummers. Then we have extended Midi. Let's not worry about this just now, but this is if you want to actually record in an external synthesizer on. Then we have guitar a bass, which is similar to audio but is a trap designed just for recording an electric guitar or base. So for now we're going to select a software instruments on here. We can also select our instruments. We can have empty channel strip default patch on down here. We have a load of different synthesizers to choose from. But for now, we're just going to hit empty Channel Strip and then hit crates. So this is the main interface. We have a few different things we can do. Okay, so now I'm just going to go over some of the basics off this main interface in logic Pro TEM. On the left, we have this button, which is the library button. This will allow us to choose different presets on instruments we can open and close this with the key command. Why? Going along? We have the inspector. That's this area here on the left. So this has some region information and then some track information as well, and also has things such as a pan part on a volume fader and the area where we can add some plug ins we can open and close this with the I button. We also have a quick help, Which is this question mark button? If you're brand new to logic pro, maybe have this on. So if you hover over something. For example, this pan up here, it will tell you exactly what it does and then going across. We have apple Loop library, which is this blue button over here on the right, and we can open and close this with the key command. Oh, we also have some controls up here as well, which allowed us to play stop record. And also rewind of us forward on going across. We have this LCD display which allows us to choose the tempo. So here we have the beats per minutes. The default is 120 beats per minutes. Then that also tells us where we are in the bar. This rule, it allows us to drag across the bars on up here in the LCD display will tell us what bar on what people room then going across. We have the time signature. Right now we're in the default 44 on the key signature, which the default is C major. Okay, some of the essential things is the Metrodome over here. If it's enabled, it will be purple. And then we also have I put volume here as well. Okay, so there's some of the main key essentials in logic. Pro TEM. Like I said, this is just a really quick crash course into logic Pro. But if your brand new stay tuned, because in the next lecture with him to look at recording software instruments. 3. Part 1: Recording Software Instruments: Hello and welcome to this lecture where we're going to be looking at recording a software instruments so a software instrument is a synthesizer or sampler on. We can edit these Simpson samples with MIDI data via AM midi keyboards or something called musical typing, which we will look at in this lecture. Let's now open up the library. We can do this by hitting the library button in the top left or by using the key command. Why on in this library we can choose different presets, so let's go on to piano. So I'm going to choose Yamaha Grand Piano. You notice it will open up a instrument in this case, a sampler called the excess 24 on some different effects down here as well. That's close a library by hitting. Why on if we play some notes on our mini keyboard, we can hear it's a piano sound. You also notice up in the LCD display. It will tell us what called were playing. If you don't have a media cable, don't worry, we can use something called musical typing. So if you use the key command command K or for go upto window, we go down to show musical typing, and this will bring up the small keyboard and we have a couple of different views. We can change this view. We could make this cable bigger or smaller and use the mouse button to click some of these geese or we can use musical typing on. We can use the keys on our apple keyboard to actually place notes. I do recommend using a MIDI controller if you don't have a media control. Although don't worry, musical typing is fine as well. Okay, let's just close musical typing for now and we need to make sure the track is armed. To do this, we need to make sure this are Button is selected on. I'm going to make sure the Metro name is turned on as well. So for gave it to the match name is enabled. It will be purple. Okay. And now what I'm going to do is just hit, recording and hit the R button and just going to play in some courts. Ondas. Long as we have this counting button selected, it will give us accountant of one bar by default. Okay, I just played in four chords there a minor si g n f. So we've actually recorded in a midi region on. We can tell it's Midi over here because we have thes dashes or lines. But if we recorded audio, we would see away form with many information. We can easily Kwan ties. This on quanta izing is where we correct our timing off the notes. So what it basically does is it moves and notes to the grid so we can actually choose what value off the grid. We want to quantities it, too. So if you go over to the inspector under region here, we will have quanta eyes. So I only played one called every bar. Some actually going to change this toe one whole notes, so that basically means it will move the course to the nearest bar. We can double click on this and look at the MIDI notes in more detail. So if we hit return and hit space bar, we could listen to this piano sound now, and it should all be quanta ized. Let's add a base partner, so let's go over to the plus button. Let's choose software instruments. Onder instrument. I'm just going to choose empty channel strip for now on, you're going to choose our bass sound from the library. So let's hit wide to open up the library on under here, I'm going to find base, and now I'm going to choose one called Liverpool Base. That's close the library of why? And if we play some notes on Army to keyboard you, you can hear the bass sound. It's all going to do now is just play. Quarter notes. So on every beat, I'm going to play the bass. In this case, I'm just going to play the route notes. So I'm just going to play the notes A C G and then f. So let's hear our to record. It will give us one bar of counting by defaults. The Metrodome is on. So let's just record this in right now, okay? I could have played that a bit better at the end, but we could always go over two quantities again. On this time. We played quarter notes, so this will move the notes that I played the closest quarter note of the grid you might have seen there that actually corrected the time. And so if we listen back to this now it should be in time. We hover up the top right of the clips. We can actually create a loop. So I'm just going to let both of these so hover up to the top right of the clip and just dragged over. And this will create a loop. If you also click on the top up here on this grade out area, this is the cycle region on. We can't She dragged this over to create a cycle area so it's actually now going to play these eight bars round and round again. Also, because I've got this base part playing on every quarter notes, and it's perfectly in time because we contact ized it. I'm going to turn off the Metro name. Now let's have a listen to this piano on bass parts on that one round around again until I pause the recording by hitting space bar. Okay, so that's just a quick example of recording software instruments in the next lecture, we're going to continue looking at this, begin to add a synthesizer, but thanks for watching, and I'll see you in the next lecture 4. Part 2: A Brief Overview of Recording and Editing Synths in Logic Pro X: Hello and welcome to this lecture where we're going to be looking at adding a synthesizer. So this is just a brief overview off Simpson on synthesis. In Logic Pro. We're not really going to go into synthesis too much. I'm just going to quickly show you how you can find a simple preset on. Then record it in logic probe. So this is just a lecture for anyone that wants to jump straight in and start making music and start recording Simpson without knowing too much about logic Pro. So let's start off by creating a new instrument. So let's go over to this plus button here and now. Let's go to software instruments for now. Under instrument. Let's choose empty Channel Strip and then hit Create. Now we're going to open up the library with the Libra, Britain here. Well, we can use the key command. Why in this library? Let's go down toe wet, says synthesizer. And for this, I'm going to choose Bell so we can click on some of these Simpson on your notice. We get an instrument appear here, for example. This one says yes to, and then we have some effects here as Well, so this includes a delay on we have some buses down here or sends, and then we have some other things as well, such as the pan on the volume fader. So if we just play some notes on Amity Keyboard, you can hear the seventh. Of course, we can use musical type of command K if we don't have a medic abled so we can just scroll through some of these to start with. And you consider the instruments often change in these different presets to this one. This sculpture alchemy, and then this one here is to So this has a few different effects on here. We can click on these to open up these effects, but for now, we're just going to use this presets. Let's close the library with why, of course we can actually open up the synthesizer itself by clicking on the name of the SIM Fear in the Channel strip. In this case, it's the es two. This may look quite complex if you're new to synthesis and sound design, but we basically have a few different things here. We have the pitch and then we can choose Well, oscillator. What type of wave. In this case, we have free different oscillators. So this just really changes the sound with wave type. And then we have a filter section. We can cut out some of the frequencies if you wish, and then we have the volume. And then after this, we have in the fact section way have a few more things down here, such as the attack decay sustained Release time on also the LFO. If you're brand new to recommend just going through the presets to start with, you click on the drop down box. Here we can choose a load of different presets and just have a look how they actually change. And then later on, I do recommend going in and learning a bit more about synthesis. But for your brand new, don't worry too much about this right now. Okay, let's open up the library with either the library button or by hitting the key command. Why? Let's now try another preset. We can use the arrow button on the keyboard to scroll through these. I'm going to use this one here, which is called Delicate Bells, and it uses a synthesizer called sculpture. Okay, so let's record this in there, we can use our button to record. And remember, once we've recorded this midi information, we can always go to another synthesizer here. Just because we recorded in with this synth doesn't mean we can't change it later on. Okay, so let's now close the library with y button. Let's hear our to record. And I'm going to record in a sim part now, okay? And if we go over to the inspector on open this, we can go over to the region section here and go down toe wet, says Kwan ties, and I'm going to change this to 1/16 notes. So what this will do is this will change. Midi notes on it will snap it to the grit. We can choose the closest note it will move to here in this note value. So I'm going to choose 1/16 notes and you might have seen their that the note slightly changed on Let's just play this. But now on. Listen to see if this is in time, you can also double click on this information. What? We can go over to the editor button up here and we can actually open up this piano roll editor. I just give you a quick overview off this now. So horizontal here is the bar numbers on vertical is the notes. You'll notice we have the notes of a piano but flipped on their side. Uh, these correspond to the notes on the keyboard, and we have these small blocks of information which triggers the certain notes. For example, at the start, I wanted this note to come in on the Bates on the note actually played in a different place . That's because I play the notes slightly closer to the 2nd 16th note in this bar than the 1st 16th No, in this bar we can also go to the right click tool here on slept the pencil tool on. If we use the right click button, we can even draw in some more notes If you wish. Waken always under this with commands that we can even go through and correct some things here, for example, this No, I do want here this night. I believe here so you can go in and actually quantifies and fix our notes in this editor as well. Just in case we didn't play our information into well, I want to correct it even further. Let's close this Midi editor now by hitting the scissors here or by using the key command A . Now, if I hover over this midi information in the top, right, we will get this loop. Let's just look this okay, Now we've added to our groove we have a piano part of bass parts on a simply part. So that's just a quick overview of synthesizers and recording Simpson in logic Pro TEM. This is just a quick overview just to get started so you can record and create your own music straight away. The next lecture we're going to look at setting up on recording audio. 5. Part 3: Recording Audio: Hello and welcome to this lecture where we're going to be looking at creating on recording on audio track. So if audio, this could be things like an electric guitar and electric bass and acoustic guitar of the pickup or a microphone, audio could also be the output off a hardware synth. But this lecture we're going to look at recording a guitar and also some percussion with a microphone. So let's create a new track. Let's go over to this plus button here and go on to audio. Okay, going down. We have input. So this is where our audio is plugged into. So this could be where are guitar or a microphone is plugged into on our audio interface. So for this, I'm going to choose and put to because I've got an acoustic guitar that has a pickup plugged into input to And then I'm going to hit Crate on our audio interface. We can increase the gain and you can see there that we've got audio coming in. If we hit this, I button will be able to monitor this or hear this audio back. This is a good level. We don't want it too high. because if we have it too high, it will be in the red on will clip on Distort. But we don't want the game to low or it may be difficult to hear our instruments. We can always increase the game later on, but for now, this is a good level. If you want to record our audio, we'll have to arm it with this Are button before we record, though, let's go over to our audio preferences on set up a few different things here. So let's go over to logic Pro 10 in the top left. Go down to preferences and select audio. So first of all, make sure you have core audio enabled, and then we have our output device. This is where against out. But so right now, this is output into my screen capture software. But if you click on this drop down box, your audio interface should appear here, or you can slept built Anak. Put if you want to output from the built in speakers on your Mac below this I have my input , which is my audio interface. It's an audio interface is basically a device that converts analog signals such as a microphone or a guitar into a digital signal so we can record of it into our digital audio workstation. I do recommend getting on audio interface on the inputs on some max. You can use the built in microphone, but it's not really going to sound that great to be honest. But it can be useful just for putting down some quick ideas and then going down. We have the buffer size. If you want to record audio, make sure your buffer size isn't too high. Maybe fair to two or 64. If it's any higher than this, this could cause some noticeable Layton See in your signal. Just remember to choose a lower buffer size when recording audio. When you're mixing, though, you can always increase the buffer size later on. Because the lower the buffer size, the more CPU power is needed, some other applications can cause Layton see as well. For example, me out. Putting into this audio capture will call some Layton see when recording, so I will later on swap into built in outputs just to give you a heads up. Okay, that's all you really need to know for now, just for getting started. Let's close this. If you do want to hear ourselves back, we can monitor this with I Onda. We can record enable this with our Of course, we do have solo and mute controls here as well. One of the thing I like to do before I record is I like to drag all of the instruments just over one bar. We're going to drive the cycle region over as well and just drag this back, Qanbar. And now I'm going to turn off the counted, and now it's going to record one bar before we come in. That's because when you record audio, it can chop off some of the beginning bets. For example, if you've got some kind of a slide or anything that starts just before the bar, it's going to cut it off. So I really like to have just a bit of space or wiggle room before we start recording, just in case I record some audio just before the bar or I think of something I can add just before the bar. So for this, I'm going to tell on the Metro name, and here are two record. I'm going to turn off input monitoring. Now on hit the space bar to hear this back, I assumed in the waves over here of assume control. And I'm just going to turn off the Metrodome as well. Let's make this a little louder. Okay? So let's add a never guitar part. I'm going to press this duplicate button here, and this will just copy the settings that we have from this track. One more thing to mention is in our audio effects. Here, we can click on this and go down to meet a ring on here. We have tuna if we have input monitoring selected. So this I bottom here. This allows us to actually tune a guitar so you can actually go through and junior instruments with this tuna, which can be quite useful. Okay, so I'm going to hear are now and recording a new guitar part. One more thing we can do on the guitar is we can actually add a amp if we wish. So if we go over to the plug in section over here in the Inspector within, click here and go down to amps and pedals and shoes amp designer and we can go through some of the presets for this acoustic guitar much again to click on here and go on to clean and just choose one of these just for example. So we have settings like Gain bass mids trouble, reverb effects. Just select an AMP for the first guitar as well. Click on the audio effect Goto amps and pedals on Designer. Now we're going to get onto the default drop down here, going to clean and just select another one Kings time. One more thing we can do is we can double click on the track here, and rename This one's going to be the tell one on audio to will now be guitar, too. So let's go over to the zoom controls in the top, right? I'm just going to adjust this so we have more space to add another audio track. Okay, so now let's add another audio track. So I've got a microphone, which is a short sm 57 plugged into input free. Okay, so let's go over to the plus bottom last use audio. This time it's input free, so I'm going to select input free here on hit create also, if you chose the wrong in, but you can always go on the track. Heather here on changed input here as well. So if you click on this button inputs free. So now I'm going to record an egg shaker. I'm going to monitor this on. Let's such we increase the gain of input free. Okay, great. So I'm just going toe recalled on this. Then I'm going to drag this cycle region back, turn on the Metro name, and here are two record With Order without have to use all of the section, you can actually drag over a certain part. We want to say We just want Bar five to bar seven, for example, because we can't always play in perfectly or I can't anyway, now, if we hover over the top right, we would get this loop. Now let's change the cycle area, and if you play this back, it's just going to loop by 5 to 7 over and over again. It's the first part of the loop. I didn't play too well. I'm just going to drive a loop back and now resize this audio box to just this first half here on draft this back. Let's have a listen to this, Theo. Okay, now leave this section here thing Eisner Perfect. We can always go through Just find a section that we played the best on. Just use that. So it's a good idea to go for your d A. May be recorded a few times and just find a section that recorded well and just use that and leap that random around. Happy with that's not played in perfect But I think it's five. This example. Let's just turn the volume down here. So I just assumed out with zoom controls in the top rights. Now let's make a quick mix of this just with avoiding failures and also the pan dials here you notice now that I've panned the simple referred to the rights I've panned guitar to to the left, and I've planned this shaker to the right. Normally, instruments like a kick drum or a base you will normally leave panned in the middle. But high pitched instruments would give you a bit more freedom of planning. Okay, so in this lecture, we've gone over setting open or do interface have also gone over recording audio. So thank you for watching this lecture. Just a quick overview of setting up an audio interface on recording audio. The next lecture We're going to be looking at Apple Loops. 6. Part 4: Apple Loops Brief Overview - Adding a Drum Loops to our Track: Hello and welcome to this lecture where we're going to be looking at adding some drums so you can quickly and easily do this with something called Apple Loops. Apple loops are small clips off midi or audio that we can use in any way, shape or form in our project. The all roles who free and provided by apple so you can use them. However you wish. Let's go over to the Apple Loop Library over here in the top, right, or use the key command O to open up the Upolu library. So let's just click through some of these all different types of instruments is not just rooms, is guitars, different instruments and sound effects and can click up here to instrument on Let's choose doldrums and let's go over to genre and choose Elektronik. And now let's go over to descriptors. And now let's choose grooving. I found one before this upbeat funk drums five, and we can actually drag this upolu to our project under last track. We can go over to the loop market up here and drag this over. And now we've imported add drums. Let's have a listen to this now, Okay, that works fine. I'm just going to make it slightly quite a. And I'm going to close Apple it library without. That's just a really fast way of adding Apple. Oops, Um, that's actually go through and find another loop. Now some guns hit this expert in to reset the search. Now let's go on. Instruments on, Let's choose Congo. We can actually play a track on, then preview this in the loop library before we drag it to our projects. I'm going to play the trap of space bar and then click on this link. Okay, now I'm going to drive this apple loop under the last track and then hover over to the top rights and drive this over. Now we've got a lead you'll notice on the stereo. Out says 0.7. So is slightly clipping, some actually just going to decrease the volume off all these different instruments so we don't clip. E just made a quick volume adjustment there with these avoiding failures, but that's how you can use apple loops for your songs. But just to get you started. If you're brand new to logic pro, and you just want to jump in start making music. That's how can quickly use apple loops for your songs. So thank you for watching this lecture on. I'll see you in the next one. 7. Part 5: A Brief Overview of Saving and Bouncing: Okay, let's now look at saving on dancing. So if we go over to file and then go down to save us, this will allow us to save our project. So right now, I'm actually going to save this on the desktop. I'm just going to name this song. Example. So we have two options. We can organize our project as even a package or a folder. I personally prefer folder. I find it a bit easier to find your audio files. So it basically creates a folder inside of other folders. And this has your different materials, such as your audio files on package. Has it all condensed in one file? So down here, just make sure audio files is checked The other things down here. Don't worry about this too much. This is Mawr. If you want to use this project on another Mac. Okay, so let's go over and hit safe. So now we're going to look at bouncing our project. So bouncing is basically exporting all of these different tracks in tow One stereo file. So this could be a way file or even an MP free recall. That balance, but is essentially just a mix down before we bounce, though the cycle range up here has another function. This sets are bouncing range as well. So I'm going to have the tracks start just before this bar, and I'm just going to leave a bit of space at the end, just in case there's any reverb from some of these instruments. Now all we need to do is go up to file balance, project or section, or we can use the key command the command be and this will bring up the bounce window. We have two main options up here. PCM on MP free. PCM is on compressed So this is things like a i f f on way files on MP free as a compressed file. MP three files will be a lot smaller, but they will be compressed files and you may lose a bit of clarity. So I do recommend using a PCM file. We can go over now toe wet says file formats on. We have wave A I f f or C A F. I normally use wave because this is the universal file type. Then we have resolution sample rate, file type on differing. But for now, let's just leave this on the default on, then here. Okay? And now you can name abouts by default. It will actually create a folder called Bounces Inside Your Project folder. But for now, I'm just going to call this song example. Bounce and save this on my desktop and then hit bounce in the bottom, right. This may take a moment or two with I just minimized logic pro on. Go over to this project here, and that's just hit space bar to preview this. You also noticed that you cut off a bit off the open Hi hats sound. So we could always go back to our logic pro project on, then extend the cycle region just so it doesn't cut off any of this high hat sound.
