Little Art Hacks: How to Transfer a Drawing

1. Introduction: Hi, I'm Adele McFarland while and I'm a visual artist and educator from Nova Scotia. In today's class, I'd like to teach you a simple method for transferring images from your sketchbook to a painting surface. It is a very quick class, and you don't need a lot of materials. You can. If you have it available, use a graphic paper or what's called a carbon paper and that could be found in a hardware store or craft store. However, if you don't have access to carbon paper than this class is definitely for you, because I'm going to teach you how to make your own. So stick with me, and in the next video, I will talk to you about the materials we're going to need. 2. Materials: in this video, we're gonna talk about materials. So you really don't need very much for this. Uh, you need a graphite pencil. Uh, surface, the painting surface or whatever surface it is. You want to transfer your image tube? So this is just a little tiny stretch canvas that I'm gonna use to demonstrate. You are going to need some tracing paper, uh, or alternatively, hate some just white computer. I gotta like to use the white computer paper because it's a little bit thicker. I can usually get, like to transfer side of one of the things thinkers stuff. Um, okay. And you're also going to need a sketch that you want to work with, so get your sketchbook. All right. Perfect. OK, in the next video, we're going to trace 3. Trace : All right. So the first thing that we have to do to transfer our image is to trace our image. So I'm gonna take my right computer paper, and I'm gonna trace my image. Okay, So once you're images trays, then you are ready to make the graphite paper. 4. Graphite Application : Okay, so now we are going to make our graphic paper. So you have your tracings, and I'm gonna get you to split your tracing over and you are going Teoh shade with your pencil, everything on the back. Now you can see that there is this image kind of imprinted from when I did the tracing. So I was doing the tracing from a graphic image to some of that graph I transferred onto this paper and that's okay. We're going to add more graphite to the back to really ensure that our transfer is successful. So depending on the image that your tree saying you might not get this kind of ghosting on the back on and that's that's fine, too. It's kind of nice in this case because we can really see where we want to put our graphite for this method. It's good to take your pencil and lean it on its side a little bit so that you get nice broad strokes and you want to add your graphite everywhere that you want image to transfer . Okay, so now way have our image on one's own graphite covering the other side, and we're ready to do our transfers 5. Transfer : So now we're gonna be transferring our image onto our painting surface, or you take your painting surface and you're going to place your image over top. We can see that my paints and surfaces that's longer than my image. So I'm going to kind of fold monument over on hold it in place. Um, if you were surfaces larger, you can definitely take your paper down. I'm just gonna hold it and no, just sharpen my pencil so that it's nice and sharp for this. All right, So once you have your image down, you are gonna simply trace the image again. Now, as I'm retracing the image, my pencil is pressing the graphite on the back of the paper into the surface. Although, and that is going to make the transfer. You can also use a ballpoint pen for this message, which is kind of nice, because then you can see where you've traced, and the pen is nice and hard, so it makes a really good transfer for this. We're gonna keep it simple, and I'm just use a pencil. - All right, So once you think that you have everything trace that you want, then you can lift and you have You're transferred image, and it's a simple is that so? Now I can apply paint to the surface, and it is already there. Another way. That this method is really useful is for block printing, so you can transfer your image onto a piece of wood or linoleum, and then you have the image there and you can carve it it. 6. Assignment : So for your assignment, I would like you to transfer an image from your sketchbook to another surface. It can be any service you want. It could be a painting surface. It can be a piece of wood or linoleum that you're going to do a block print from You can transfer your image onto your wall or a piece of clothing. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
