If knowledge is power then learning the science of  how you learn is your superpower.

So often i've had feedback from people that i've helped "I wish that I had been shown this earlier"! Learning never stops. We all go through our career needing to re-invent ourselves at least 7 or 8 times. But, we're rarely shown how we should learn and adapt to the technological and life changes that affect us. 

In this workshop l will drill down to the practical skills that you need to improve your:

 Learning - We'll look at the learning methods that apply to you. These are not generic 'one-size' fits all. Have a go at the learning style assessment before you get going. This will help you to identify your learning profile(s) and then this will help with choosing the appropriate ways to study for you. 

Productivity - How to use the tools, apps and technology to better help you focus on what is important. It's great understanding your learning profile and the methods that help but there's a huge amount of resources, apps and technology that can also help you. 

 Building Resilience - How to cope with adversity, bounce back quickly and to use it to your own advantage.

I'm passionate about helping people become more productive. I have spent the last 12 years as a learning  expert helping students unlock their own potential capacity to maximise potential by focusing on the science of learning I've helped in excess of 4,000 students improve the way that they prepare for exams.

I've been a learning coach since 2007 when I graduated top of my PGCE class from the university of London (IOE). During that time I became fascinated with experiential learning, learning profiles and memory techniques. 

Since I graduated i've spent my career training teachers and students in methods & techniques that improve learning. With a friend I created my own 4 R's profiling which you'll find about more in these videos.   These methods are based upon academic research of academic and current practices all over the world. 1. What is Learning?: Hey guys, welcome back. I hope you enjoyed that first part of the video. You might notice that my background a little bit different. So I've got this camera equipment setup my home studio or my living room, as it's otherwise known for the rest of the day. So guys, what we're gonna be looking at in this video is looking at actually what learning is now for many of you who've never even considered that question. Now, for the last 12 years, I've been helping people improve the way they study and learn. But actually that's only a tiny proportion of what I've been doing. I've also been looking at everything else that goes into that. So looking at things like productivity, resilience, mindset, health, nutrition, which I'm no expert in. But all of the things that I've been doing have been using other people's ideas and theories and looking at the science behind that. And then helping other people, almost like showing them the way to go. I've learned so much of what I do through watching YouTube videos, through Scotia courses. And that's where I've basically gathered all of my information apart from reading tons and tons of like scientific papers. Now, if we start off by looking at what learning is for me, learnings about when you have the aha moment. It's about when you try to solve a problem that you didn't know that either existed or that you knew, but you didn't know the solution to it. Now, in order to get to that stage where you have the aha moment when you solve a problem you know, that you had We didn't have that's any one part of it because for the rest of us, we all just need to bolt on to that and think of learning as a module. Now for 40% of our day, we spend in like automatic pilot, now, it wouldn't be possible for us to use our brain energy for every single thing that we do so well the brain does, and many of you will know this already what the brain does. It creates shortcuts and learning and then adding these extra tools, which we're going to talk about is about creating shortcuts. Now, what we want to make sure we do though, is to have good shortcuts or good habits and not have bad shortcuts. And also, we all know that we've got bad habits that we have. And if some of you, it might be that we don't know how to snap out and procrastination. It might be that we don't have the resilience that we need. So for me, learning is about acquiring new knowledge, but also looking at that, every day change. How can I become 1% better every single day on one or two things that I'm working on. And that's where we're going to kick this course off, guys, looking at how to create incremental change so that you can build new, longer-lasting habits. You can apply that to anything you do. And I'll share with you my experience on doing just that. Because when it comes to learning and developing and holding on to new skills, that requires willpower and willpower as a muscle. And if we can train that muscle to do more of the things and to think more automatically, then all of a sudden you've got that spare energy in that spare time to be doing other things so, well, this is all about, is about looking at learning as a hormone and it's about discovering new things. We're discovering new ways of doing things. But then it's about setting into automatic pilot as many of the routine things that we can do so that we can become more productive and more efficient and do. The other thing is I would much rather do. And you guys, so the next video, look at habits, and they'll look at habit stacking. And a whole load of these resources is information that I've gathered from elsewhere. And I'll include the links just below. So you guys can take a look at that as well. Why Habits are Important for Learning: Hi guys, Thanks for joining my mass class and how to learn in a much more effective way before you go and jump in and watch this video, I think it's really important that if you want to learn and improve your exam performance, that you first understand the importance of habits and then how you can create new routines on the back of that. Now, for me, I've obviously been a teacher for more than ten years, but I've never talked a lot about habits and routines and how habit stacking can help you learn in a much more effective way. It's only through all of the research that I've been doing, thanks to the other Skillshare courses and thanks to lots of other textbooks, you can see up my shelf here that I've actually started to fully understand this and I wanted to share this with you guys that learning is obviously really important. You can look at your learning styles and your learning preferences. And they can also look at the tools and the methods and some of the technology that already exists to help you become more effective or more productive or better learners. But actually for me what I think it's really important if you want to compound the effects of learning. So if you want to continue that growth curve up, what you need to do at the start. And this will be a gradual thing as you build on this and work on this. Overtime is you need to write the integer right back to the beginning looking at routines and how you can create new habits around learning. And then you can, how you can compound the effect of that. Now, just for you guys, I've created several videos on habits, routines and habits stacking. Now for me, one of the things that I sometimes struggle with is like you procrastination. Procrastination is when you lack the willpower or lack the urge to do something and you do something else, you get sidetracked. Now for me, when I wanted to focus around procrastination is I wanted to create a new habit because I know that from other research that I've been doing is you can't take away an old habits. So we've all got old habits. Might be biting your nails, it might be procrastination, it might be something else. But if you come to the realization and I did that, bad habit is not something you can take away, but you can put over the top of that new habits. So I needed to create a new routine looking at what my Q is for when I start to become in that like phase or moment of procrastinating. So I created a new habit and a new routine. And the secret behind that is a new routine or a new habit must not take more than two minutes. And then you can compound that once you've started to make it become more, I suppose are the word is habitual, more routine like then you can compound the effect of that and overlay that. But you can't ever replace a bad habit. That's super interesting. Hope you guys found that useful. Look forward to seeing you guys on the next video. 3. The Myths of Learning : So what we look at in this video is the theory behind learning. Now, this sounds really obvious, but guess what? You forget things over time. There's a theory behind it's called the Curve or Forgetting. About 100 years ago, a chap called Ever Norge came up with the idea that over time you forget information, and what you see on this curve is that over the first few days your memory recall goes down , but it goes down even further after you get to the week on the one month part. What we go through in this master classes the techniques that you can use to help you recall information, but also to review it, because what you don't want to do if you start your revision too early, is to forget everything you learned, right. Start now, some of you might be sorts of students that start your revision right the last minute, and you wonder why you remember information Well. It's sort of his common sense when you start to think about realizing that if you cram your learning and many of us have done this in the past, where we've revised or studied or prepared for example, it's taking place the next day. The chances of you remembering information is much higher, that that's already well, if all you've got to prepare for a short answer test. But when Neto condense a huge amount of content into your exam started, night forges weren't cut it, so I'm going to show you based upon this idea off. You forget information over time, how you can actually re cool backs information and then to use it in your exam on your test . So the next video, we'll start a deep dive into some of the tools and techniques and strategies that you can use to help record information that you otherwise would have forgotten. 4. Learning Styles : so this video will be looking at is on the learning profiles. Some of you may not have heard of these before that some of you may what would do now? It's a deep dive into each of these four learning profiles, soft with number one kinesthetic aural visual on reading. Now not many of us have the learning preference or learning profile off being a reader, you. But guess what it is. If your reader, it means that you learn through reading information, which could be quite useful. However, if you're preparing for a test that's tomorrow or next week, then reading your information is definitely the least effective way off learning. I will show you if you put a test tomorrow or next week or next month. The stretches that you need to use in order to remember learn study revised in the most effective way possible just to recap. So if your reader what that means is your preference for learning, and in other words, that means the way that you learn best is to read information. Reading is really important, but I will show you how you can use that in a much more effective way in the next video. So the other learning profile is for all. I would say that I am probably something likes to learn in this way, which means you like to talk. It means that you learn through teaching others most teachers, thankfully, our or learners, which means they learn through talking. I'll show you how you can use this when possible, to learn in the most effective way, or we'll need you, like learn through talking and through discussion. Kinesthetic. If you're a sports person, we feel somebody likes to just do things and keep active. The chances are you'll be kinesthetic. Most boys tend to be kinesthetic. Andi Orel. Okay, The other type of learning apart from Orrell, kinesthetic and reading is to be a visual. Now. This means that you enjoy looking at pictures you might enjoy using mind maps. I'm sure many of you have had your teachers say to you, Go home and you're a mind map. It will help you learn and memorize. Well, the reason your teachers are saying that is because they probably tend to lean more towards being a visual learner. Now what tends to happen is you're probably have two And if you're lucky, three learning profiles, which means actually, along the four profiles, which were kinesthetic reading or or and visual could be combined as a minimum, you will have to learning profiles. What that means is, if your reader you might also be in or learner. If you're kinesthetic, you might be, or all those to tend to go quite well together. But regardless of what you are, when you complete the learning profile, I will help you understand how you can use four ways to improve your memory. Recall if you remember back to the last video where we looked at the different types of learning profile on the pyramid, if you stick to just one preference. If you stick just to reading your notes, your forget 90% of information what you must do. Regardless, the type of learning profile you are is you've got to combine all of those strategies to help you relearn in the most effective way possible. Now, the reason you're going to do this is because by becoming more efficient with your learning , you can then prioritize your time and spend it doing other things. What I want to be really clear with you today. Is that what I'm not doing? I'm not giving you extra work, but quite the opposite. Once you understand how to learn, revise and study, all of a sudden you'll be much more productive. And you spend your time doing the things that you actually need to do and want to do. This is about becoming more efficient with your time. Okay, look forward to seeing the next video on. Rewind back to some of the previous videos just to recap if you need. 5. Power of Feedback : have you ever had test back where you looked? You've seen your grade? Well, some of the best teachers don't give it raid. They just give you 1/4 feedback which says work on this work that way All like the satisfaction of getting in a being a C 70 60 50%. Well, it does hurt if you've got a great you're not happy with Robin putting out to the back of your folder getting about it. What I wanted to do is to focus on the bits. The weakest are but all my videos I talked about focus on your heirs of weakness. The best way to improve is to focus on your errors week so good getting the a great back feeling really couldn't give yourself a pat on the back. That's all very well. But in order to improve your exam performance in the most efficient ways to spend time doing the things you want to do is to focus on your areas of weakness that we want to take away. Every time you get a piece of work back, put in your photo, but make sure that when you read, do that piece of work and you can just redo the bit. He didn't do that will make sure that when you re do that piece of work, you drill down and focus. It might take you a few times. Trust me, there will be a much better way of learning, rather just reading a chapter in your book. Focus on your areas of weakness in order to improve your memory. It's okay to fail, I would say students that I work with. Failure is absolutely fine. It's a four feedback. Actually, it's a signal to you that you need to change something if you fell in something. All you've got is a piece of useful feedback that you can use to improve the next time you do it. So when you get a piece of work back, make sure you drove down to the specifics on Learn from that, you can learn from the mistakes he made. As long as you have enough time to do that, I don't thought your your revision the day before
