1. Introduction - What's this course about?: Hi. My name is Mario and family, and welcome to this course on how to sketch a car in side view using pen and paper. So I'm in industrial designer myself. I'm originally from Stockholm, Sweden. I now live in South Florida, and I'm in sketching course ever since I was a kid, and I love sharing this with other people that loved to do the same things. I mean, most designers just have something special about course, there's something that just gets you going when it comes to car design, and that's how it is for me as well. So in this short class, we're going to sketch a car inside you using pen and paper, and I'm gonna talk you through the steps you take when you start sketching a car inside you . And also the tips and tricks kind of to get the proportions right, because that's I think that's one of the hardest parts when it comes to sketching cars is to get the proportions right. So make it an absolute look like a model car or a cartoon car or something like that Way wanted to be a realistic car. There are some rules that you need to know to get that right. And we're gonna talk about that in this course. By the end of the course, I hope to see your car sketch in the Projects folder for this class. I would love to see that, and I hope you're going to share it with all of us. Now, I'm ready to get going with the sketching, and I know you are too, so let's get started. 2. 1 Laying down basic perspective & getting the wheel base right: I won't go into this course on how to sketch a car in side view. So what we're gonna do today, what we're gonna be learning is basically how discussion with pen and paper. And I'm using a big round stick, a very standard pan, which you can find in most stores. And they're super cheap. So you don't really have to have a lot of money to do this. Which is that which is a good thing. So, uh, we're gonna sketch a core inside view when I'm gonna show you some tips and tricks on how to get the proportions. Right. So to start with, we want to start with creating a baseline, okay. And a baseline is the lion, the bottom line of the car, That will be, um, closest to the ground. And this is the baseline. Since we're in a side view, it's going to be a straight line after we do that. After we done that, we want to put up the wheels. So I'm gonna start by putting one Well, right here and then we want three three wheels, distance to the front wheel. Okay. That's a good rule to keep in mind. all right. And the circles, As you can see, they don't have to be perfect right now. We're just practicing. 3. 2 Designing the silhouette - What to think about: And if you get something wrong, it doesn't matter. You can always start over, and from here we want to sketch a sports car. This time, we're gonna focus on a two door sports car. So what I like to do is start with the body work that goes over the front wheel here. So the front fender and the top point off the top point where this curve starts to go down again should be at the center of the wheel. If that makes sense, because that's you want to give the wheel as much space as possible inside of this fender, and that's usually how it works. From here. We can start to make the coop the cabin, and I'm doing that. Since this is a front engine car, we need to leave some space for the engine here. If it was a rear engine car, we might start the window up here. If it was like, you know, let's say a Lamborghini or a Ferrari or something like that, we might start the window here. You can see that if you Google pictures off front engine car and we're and rear engine car course, and you can see the difference off where this point starts. Let's say this is something like a Corvette or a Aston Martin or something like that. Super fancy. And the top point off this curve is where the driver is going to have his head, and that's gonna be around here. So let's say his head is in here because we obviously want to give him as much room as possible as well. And from here we can start to design the rear, and that's totally up to you. How you want to design this? A good idea is to check for just Google a lot of images off sports car and check, check the side view and get some ideas and inspiration from that. I'm just gonna make if every generic and here something like this and same with the front is gonna be have kind of a sharp nose. And then we want to connect all these lines and also make we want to adjust the baseline as we go. So I'm gonna put a new line down here 4. 3 Designing the "green house" - Windows & side view perspective: and from here, since this window here, the windshield of the windscreen is curved. That means that from side view we're actually gonna going to see it a little bit. So something like that and want to cut it off right there. You always keep. You always have to keep in mind that we were actually sketching in perspective, even though it's it's a complete side view. So, for example, we going to see the the tires on the other side of the car underneath the car, and then we can connect those as well and just make a ground. From here, we can start to design the the windows, so you have the a pillar, which is this pillar right here. This one. That's the A, Pilar and ah, on a sports car. It's going to be You might have a B pillar, but it's usually goes all the way to the sea pillar because we don't have any. We just have a large piece of window here. If you have a four door, for example, you always have some section of a metal or plastic that separates that, and that's called the D. Peeler. In this case, we're gonna use. Go straight to the See Peeler. Okay. And let's start to design this window, and he can be any shape you like. A good rule to keep in mind here is that this distance should be 1/3 and this distance 2/3 . That gives a nice proportion of the car, and it makes it look, uh, sporty. If you've noticed Audi in particular, they use this rule on all their cars. So the window is 1/3 and the body this distance is always 2/3. So let's continue just feeling the lines now and start to design this car. 5. 4 Let's add your personal design features to the car and make it yours: So we want a shoulder line back here and we want front lights and let's see what can make a shoulder here, too. And we can connect the lines here again. The hood is the hood is has a curvature on it. So that means we're going to see some part off the hood, even from side view and same thing with the rear lights here, they usually go the usually stretch pretty for that way on the side, they basically go. They swoop around the corner and come out on the side as well. So we have to visualize that and always make it easy for you and rotate the paper when you need to. I think that looks cool and we might want to add a bumper here and maybe some exhaust down here like that. And we also need a front grille and the front of a car. Basically, everything on a car is a curve. So here again, we're going to see the front grill. Um, even if we look at the car from a side view like that, and now to the which I think is the most time consuming part which is sketching the vibrance 6. 5 Sketching the wheels & rims - here's an easy trick to get it right: so I'm gonna keep it very simple here. And ah, I start with making the center point and I used I put put out the center points a bit to the I don't put him in the center of the wheel because the wheels have some depth to them. So they go in there con cave, and this is in perspective. So if we think that the vanishing point is somewhere in the back around here, the perspective will make these the center point of the wheels turn a bit inwards. If that makes sense, if it doesn't, please let me know when I'll be happy to explain it a bit more. All right, we have our car here almost complete with a line work. I just need to put out some rims and to put out rims. Let's make it a five or six spoke, so I'm going to start by marking where the rims are going to hit. And how to do that in the easy way is just to do the opposite side. Something like that. This will be what is in 123458 spoke. That's fine, just to keep it simple. So you start by number 12 69 and three, and then you put you mark out the the distance in between there to make a few more spokes from there. We want to connect into the center with a few quick strokes like that, and now we're starting to see. Now we have a good guide on how to design this wheel, so we want to connect these spokes. Now we can make it a double connecting something like that with just a quick curve in between the spokes. Make that double, too, and bend. Make two strokes there and they curve in between and same thing here. So it's let's add some thickness to the spokes first and connect them with a curve. And there we have our wheels. This one turned out a bit strange, but that's fine. We're gonna keep it for that for now, keeping like that for now. And if you want. If you want to go into more detail, you can always add Ah, the tire around here and make some thickness to make it look a bit more real. But this video is just on getting the proportions of the car down inside view to make it something like that. Maybe, And that's how you make a car in side view with all the proposed proportion, tips and room, you can say rules, I guess if you really want to start out in practice this. 7. 6 Recap of what we've learned & Final words of advice: keep in mind the rules that we went through, so we can recap here real quick. The 1st 1 You start by making a Let's write it up here. Step number one, baseline. And that's this line that we put down right here just to give us a start on the sketch. Number two, we rear or front. We can either start with this or with that one. Doesn't really matter. Put down one. Well, number three, this is kind of important after a while when you've been sketching a lot. Of course, you kind of see this and you don't need to. You don't need to put these out that three circles here. But you want three wheel distances. Hold the vase. Says it sounds a bit weird. Three wheel distances between axles. And that's between these two wheels. Basically. So you put one well out, make three ghosts. You can call it ghost wheels if you want, and then you start by adding the third, the second wheel. Excellent. Number four was to start designed the body lying the body. Sorry about that. I hope you can see this. And we started with making defenders the front fender and we need to keep in mind that the the top distance, the top this since right here is the top. As far as the top distance of the arch right here should be at the top off the wheel, if that makes sense, and then we have the Windows design windows. So we started with the front windshield, and we need to keep in mind that it's a curvature. The whole car is a curve, so we need to keep in mind that this is actually going to be showing from side view, same as the rear lights, front lights and exhaust. If you want to put that out, too, and grill as well. And step number six, the final step would be to finish up the design features, and by that I mean basically finished everything you want. You want the car to look like you might want to add a different spoke design that you might want to have circular holes in the design or something like that. It's totally up to you, and that's that's about it for this short, quick course and how to sketch a car inside of you. I really hope you enjoyed it. Right there. Okay, so, first of all, we need to decide on a color. That's kind of difficult, because I don't know which ones to pick. Um, kind of leaning towards screen. Sure. What's degree? Why not? And as always, whatever side view here, if you didn't see this video, I'm gonna put a link in in in this video right now so you can head over there and check this video first and get your side view correctly down on paper, and then we can continue with the markers. So first of all, I am going to start with the lights, lightest shade, shade off greens. And it is going to be a bit messy right now because I have all these have all these of sorry. I have all these a Bic lines already, so it's gonna going to bleed just a little bit, but it's totally fine. I kind of, uh it doesn't bother me that much If this gets if the sketch gets Ah, dirty, Uh, it's not a big deal for me. I can't like it if if you can if you can control the dirtiness of this cash so that it doesn't go like all crazy, but, ah, if it's just a little bit dirty, I kind of think it adds to his sketch, actually, and you can actually see that's that. It's been sketched, and it's not, like super clean so that it almost gets boring and has some life to it When it's 30. That's just my opinion. So, uh, young doing the light green right now? Filion The basic reflections and the basic reflections of a car, uh, is always, I mean, always as usual. Keep in mind where your light sources that's the That's the number one thing you want to think off. Ah, when you when you started sketch. You need to keep in mind where the light sources. By that I mean, where does the life come from? So in this case, we have the light coming from above. It's coming from the top, and it's shining down on this car from this way on, and we have the things The basic reflections of a car are the is the horizon line, which is this one right here. And that is as you might have figured out That's the horizon, reflecting inside of this inside of the car in the side of the car. 9. 8 Shading the car using color tones: and, uh, that usually goes up to the shoulder line. Now, the shoulder line that's totally up to you to design where you want to put it. How high up you want this white line to go And this white line right here, that's the shoulder line. I think, uh, the higher up it goes, or I mean, not the higher up. But if you have it like in the middle here, it's gonna look super weird. And the car is gonna look heavy because it the shoulder line is just think of it as a person like the shoulders. You want the shoulders to be brought. You don't want the middle section to be brought. That's gonna look fat. So you're gonna make a fat car if you're if you're putting the shoulder line right here in the middle, so you kind of wanna think of think of the car design as animals and as, um, you don't power ah, positions off animals and human beings. You can kind of implement that in Carter's line when you're sketching cars as well. That's why I wanna have the shoulder line a bit high up, then just in the middle and I would just put Thea. I'm gonna actually put a bit more off the second shade of green here before I'm moving to the darkest shade. Something like that looks good. And now I'm gonna go. So as you can see, I'm just using three shades markers That said, it doesn't have to be more complicated. I'm seeing some dudes, like with incredible skills. They use two shades off market like two colors they use like they might put like blue on top of here to reflect the the sky. And then they have some red brown tone here. It looks sick, but, uh, it's really Ah, I guess for them it's not complicated, but I have never learned to sketch that I actually never tried it. I might do it sometime someday, actually going to do it someday just to just for fun and see how it turns out I'm not going to record it because I believe it's going to turn up like crap the first times. I'm pretty sure. So give me a few practice rounds and then I'm going to record something like that to show you what I mean. But for basic sketching like this, marketer sketching you don't need a lot of sheets. Different color, different tones need like you could probably do this with two tones as well. Because if you have two tones, then you can go over with cool grays to adjust those tones. So, for example, let me show you what I'm talking about here. Let's say you just have these two. You don't have this middle, middle green one and you want Teoh. You want you want more green than these two. So this is Let's see. I'm gonna skin shit up here, okay? And let's do the darkest one. So those are the two tones you have to play with, Um, what we could do. Let's see. Let's try cool grey three. And you have the cool grace you can use Cool grace to shade of the green, a bit darker or, you know, play around with it like this. You get a different shade of green here. Same thing with the darker one. You kind of want to go to maybe cool very six. Might the too dark Let's try and cool Grey Five. Yes, you here immediately. You have, like, four shades agreeing there just by using two shades of green and some and two shades. Cool. Great. So that's 11 way you can play around with you. Don't get the most out of your markers and, uh, get different shades. 10. 9 Fill in the black and add contrast: So let's see what else we need to do here. I think we're done for now. With the green, I'm gonna jump into the black and just started. Fill out the lines that needs to be black. And what lines are those? Well, it's usually the baseline, which I'm doing right now. Tires. Uh, sometimes the windows. You might want to do them black. Not always. Sometimes you may want to do them blue or something like that. Something cool. But, uh, we'll see. I haven't really looked at this sketch yet to see where I'm gonna put this black. Uh oh. Here. All right. So I did the wheels and or the tires and the wheel, the wheel gaffe unmade them black just now. And I also want to put black around the window here like that. And the bottom line is, Well, there were you. I think that's it, actually, for for the black, maybe put the baseline here is, well, black. I might give it some, uh, wait and make it look like it's actually sitting on the ground. Okay, so from here, what we want to do, we could start by doing the wheels right now. we could also do the window. I think I'm gonna I think I'm gonna start. Let's do lister the wheels because it takes takes a lot of time. So I I'm gonna fast for with this and then come back and explain exactly what I did. - Alright , guys. So what I did just now was to fill out the back off the wheel. So I have that we have the wheel here, and then we have the hollow ness that's behind the wheel. Now, if we want, we could put a disc brake behind here by using a white pencil. We might do that eventually, but right now I'm going to continue to, uh, designed this wheel and put some shading on the spokes and on the the metal, the wheel. And for that, I'm gonna use cool gray. 11. 10 Adding details to rims, windows and lights: probably a little bit of blue. I actually remember when I told you about the the crazy dudes that put blue on the owner sketches. Sometimes they put blue and, uh, makes it with red or brown or something like that. I'm actually gonna try and do that with this sketch, because what's the worst that could happen? Right, You need to start over. And that's just more more fun for me. Another sketch to do. So it doesn't matter. I might as well try it now. Why wait and fuel the night sketch? So we're gonna do that later. First of all, let's fix the spokes and add some, uh, some great to it. Cool. Agree? What? Is this school great, too? I might jump it up a notch to cool grey four or something. We'll see. And that's just a matter off taste. Whatever you think is looking good stick with. That was probably the best advice you've ever heard in your life. Whatever you think is good, stick with it. So that's gonna be the saying of the year. I'm actually adding cool, great four right now And you see, it looks a bit messy. Some of the Lions, but that's we're gonna fix that later. With the with the pen, wherever that is. I hope I have it here somewhere. Um, yup. That's right here. Cool. I'm gonna use that later. Okay. So, back to the sketch. Uh, let's do the window and for the window. I'm going to use warm gray, so I know I have a few warm grace here. Have. Ah, they're right here. We're gonna start with warm gray three. Same thing here. Matting a, uh, horizon line reflection just like that. And go a bit darker. Toe warm gray, seven weight g o get some contrast in there. Something like that. My chair is making weird noises. I don't know if you can hear it, but if you can, I am. I apologize for those squeaks on whatever is going on here. Uh, let's see. Uh, we could feel end. There were lights. There was some bread. I have my old markers from 2007. I think it's still good. Look at that. I guess I'm not using red enough in my sketches. That was all we we're gonna use the rent for and from here now is a fun Now we're coming up to the fun stuff which is putting highlights on or a sketch? No, I have two different kinds of highlights to work with. One is that one, the other one is 12. 11 Final highlight with white ink: right here. I'm going to start with with a big, big boy and just put a, uh, maybe and some toothy tire. Yeah, I guess it works. Why not? Okay, we're going with that. No one gonna use the pulse Skupin. And at the finer whoops, I think we saved it. If not, who cares? Make it burn point here in the window. And you see this little thing down here? Don't wanna emphasize that. It's you see that you can add a at a outline to some shapes to make them really pop. And we can add some reflections in the body as well. Just go crazy on on the rims. I hope you can see stuff. Oh, my calf. My head is not in the way. That would suck if I just like, sport this video and all You could see it. My hat. I hope that who we forgot the doors wants to put some doors in here. Uh, door lines right here and right here. Sweet. Let's put some highlights onto those as well. There we go. What else do we need to do to this sketch? I think the bottom the baseline is a bit fins. I'm gonna make that thicker. Just like that. Hey, we can fill this in a zwelling guess. And then we said we're gonna use blue, right? Do some experimenting here, so I'm going to use this B double o frost blue. It's a light blue just to you know, uh, go easy on it first and see what how it turns out. So I'm thinking about where the sky is reflecting here now, and that's the surfaces that are facing upwards, obviously, because the skies above. But I also want to keep some of these white burn points here. I don't want to put markers over the entire schedule. Our wish that kept maybe some white in here. Um, but yeah, as you know, you know how it is. You just, uh you learn as you go. This is the only way. The only way to learn something is to do it. You can read about stuff. You can, uh, watch tutorials, videos, whatever. And what? It doesn't matter what it is you're trying to learn, either. It's, ah, universal rule that if you want to learn something, just gotta do it 50,000 times. And after 50,000 times. I can guarantee that you are better and what you're trying to do. Then you were the first time around. I think it turned out pretty cool with the blue. What do you think? Especially like this area here. It looks cool. So as a final touch, now we are going to fill in the lines with our big pen. So let me just clean this mess up first. Do you have space? Take those cool grays away and all these two I am. And let's go crazy with a big pin. - All right, So what I did just now was to fill in all the lines that might have gotten a bit too messy . You want you want to keep the messiness undercover for old, so to speak. So as a final touch, they always do this. I go when the big I go in with a big pan and just sharpening up a few off the key lines that you have in the sketch. Um, just to tighten everything out up a bit
