About This Class

            In this course, I will teach you everything I learned over the years of solving professionally to drive you in the right direction to be able to solve the Rubik's cube in under 30 seconds! Being sub 30 is no small feat; practicing at the DMV, school, home, work, etc. This course teaches principals that would great for those that are solving at over 1 minute all the way to 20 second solvers! This course is especially important for those that are somewhat stuck and don't know what to work on to get faster. This will be a very informative course and I believe that many people will benefit from this. I'll see you in there!

1. Introduction: what's going on, you guys and welcome to my course on how to be sub 30. My name is Byron. I have been solving Rubik's cubes and been on this Rubik's Cube journey for about the last 11 years or so. And within that time I've been a tutor for higher. And I've taught well over 300 people, both online and in person on how to solve various types of twisty puzzles. So this one is gonna be dedicated towards those already know how to solve the Rubik's Cube . But maybe you just want to get a little bit faster. You want to drop times down a good bit. You can see this course not only as a way to get below 30 seconds, but maybe you solve in a minute and you don't know what to do to get faster. I will cover a few of those things. And, kid, this course is well, so that way, people, they're solving it slower times I want to build up. I can get that information and then you can start building off of what I'm teaching in this course I have a ton. Of course, is available to you guys so at almost any level that you're at will be courses for you guys to go in and take a look at learn a couple things. Maybe you want to learn after. Well, maybe you want to learn finger tricks, etcetera. So go ahead and look at the courses that offer, And I'm pretty sure you're gonna find something that you like being able to solve under 30 seconds takes a lot of practice, but it's something that is a ton of fun, and I think you guys are really going to enjoy this. So with that being said, let's get started. 2. Your Hardware: real quick before we get started. Just one that you guys know. If you're interested in picking up this puzzle this cubing, Matt, even a timer or any of these puzzles I have sitting in the background, feel free to take a look in the course description so you can pick some of the stuff up for yourself. All right, you guys. So first thing I want to talk about is something simple that you may have already addressed , but it's basically getting a better cube than the one that you currently have. So the one that I have right now is the top of line at the time. And this is the GAN 356 access. And this is a fantastic cube. This is my main, and the day I mess with it, I already knew it was gonna be my main. So this is my main, and I'm gonna show you guys a couple of different options. Now, a lot of people, when they are starting to solve, they may go to Wal Mart and pick up this Rubik's Brand Cube. We call this a store bought or just a Rubik's brand is what we call it and this is notorious for being a horrible, horrible speed cube. They have recently updated it going from the really, really difficult original version to this one, which is a little bit better. It's got tiles instead of those stickers that are really, really crappy. But you try and do finger. You tried to finger tricks on it, and it's just it just doesn't want to go. It's like the plastic that it's made out of his very high friction plastic, and that's where loops come in. We're gonna talk about that in a second now when it comes to this cube, not only is it just difficult to move around, it's difficult to cut corners, so I can't like everything has to be perfectly aligned in order to go. If its missile line just a little bit, it wants to fight you like crazy versus like a modern day speed cube. Cutting corners and stuff is not a problem whatsoever. I could go pretty pretty far. Let's say just under half. Yeah, it'll still go. But this one No, it won't do it. Try a little bit. It wants the fight. Oh, man. Okay, So one thing about the Rubik's brand cube that released a new version. That I can say, though, is in cubing. There's something called the anti pop torpedoes or we just call them torpedoes and on the store bought. You never had torpedoes on them. But this one seems to have some form because it doesn't want pop. You know, when you're solving really, really fast, it will tend to catch lock up, and then you keep going because you're going so quickly and the whole thing just explodes all over the table. But, uh, this will actually be very difficult to pop, surprisingly, which so that's a plus. But when you talk about the sheer weight, honestly, this cube is probably probably ran around two times or slightly more than two times the weight of this one. So this one is heavy. It's clunky. It doesn't cut corners very well. It's got a lot of resistance. It's just not a very good choice for speed cubing as well as it being a complete pain to do any kind of adjustments on this 3. Differences in Speedcubes: I hope you guys are enjoying this course so far. I do have a favor to ask you, though you may get prompted at the top of your screen or at the top of the monitor. So even though Rubiks is the original brand that made the original Rubik's Cube, there are other companies that have made better federations of it. This cube is one of the cubes that broke the world in the Cuban world, at least when it was released. This is known as the Diane's and she and don't worry about the sticker. This was a workhorse for me back in the day, and this not only has very low friction plastic, but also has those torpedoes I was talking about. As you could see right there. It's very this is heavily used, so I apologize for all the dirt and grit that's in there. But this cube is extremely old and has had has to have had thousands of solves on it. I went crazy with this thing. But if you noticed, you can hear the plastic difference, too. So you can hear all Clocky that is versus my new one so much, much quieter, much more subtle sound. So going from this one from this one to this one, what benefits did I get? I got a faster moving cube, which is low resistant plastic. I ended up getting the ability to very easily change my tensions. Unfortunately, I got stickers versus tiles, but this also saves a ton of weight. It's not a brick, it's very quick. It can cut corners very, very well. So this was already a massive upgrade over this one. So if you already have one of these and you want to get a little bit faster, I high recommend upgrading your cube. But I got a couple more show. You all right? The cube I went to from the san she was the thunderclap, and this one was recommended to me by another speed Kieber. That is a great big good bit faster than me. Say he's about seven seconds. Really, really fast. But the thunderclap. Alright, What did I get upgrading from this to this? I got a more stable cube. This cube tended to not necessarily pop a lot, but did tend to lock up a good bit for me. But this one ended up smoothing a lot of that out and making it where I got less lockups. It seemed to have similar plastic to this one. That smooth clacking sound and stuff like that Tension ing was just just about as easy. You just have to dig deeper to get that cap off. It was just a bigger cap is off. But for me, I got stability. And that was something that I needed from this one with stability and improve quarter corner cutting for this one. Last but not least, I moved up to the Volk and this one was the cream of the crop. For me at the time, it was the best of the best. I was extremely happy with looping solution on this. So basically you got insane stability like crazy stability way more stable than this one it does not. Pop ever hardly locks up with my style of cubing, and it was overall great deal it, like $20 or $16. It was kind of worth it for me. So something to consider as well. If you guys are interested in picking up any of these cubes or any of these puzzles, it will all be linked in the course description. So especially if you have this one highly recommend at least pick up a thunder clap. Listen really good budget options in the description. 4. Cube Colors: now, Another thing I wanted to touch on was also the color of Hughes is something that you may want to consider. These are the three main options right here. You have black, you have white and you have stick Earless, the traditional black cube. It was just made this way to begin with, just to have a good contrast from from the colors so you can see where they're going. But as you people were solving, they noticed that, you know, getting a white cube was really cool because it's the opposite of the black, and it just looks nicer personally for me, this white, he was my option because it seemed like colors popped for me. More seems like for some reason, having a white border, I was able to catch the colors a little bit faster. But then I went to stick Earless and honestly, like I'm sure many of you agree I hated stick Earless with a passion. I hated the way it looked. It looked cheap. I wasn't a fan of the way the light reflected off of it, you know, sip super stupid things. But I ended up solving with sticker lis by force because this key was on a very good sale. This is a $60 que but I was able to find it for about 20 bucks. So I was like, Whatever. I'm gonna try, see, See how I like it. And I'm glad I did. Honestly, because you do. You don't have this border to worry about anymore. You have nothing but color. You have nothing. But what tells you where that piece goes at all times. And that's what I noticed as I started solving with this. Getting a stick Earless cube versus black or white was a fantastic option because I can Seymour color and therefore my recognition is faster and my solved times are faster. So I would recommend, even if you don't like the way these look, consider at least trying to solve with it, you might be pleasantly surprised. Last but not least, if you take anything from this at all, if you are cubing with a Rubik's Brand Cube, please upgrade. At least get a CI sale, which will be in the course description as well. I'll have a lot of budget options for you guys, so you can easily get out of this for about half the price or so and get away. Better quality Cuban speed. Your time's up, so just consider it at least. 5. Greased Lightning!: now the next subject, we're gonna talk about loops and get your mind out of the gutter. Do you have a cube? You just want to go fast and don't care about anything else. Dnm 37. Want to live your core or slow your cube down to regain some control? Instability tracks this 30 K What about if you want stability and speed loop ical speedy. Lastly, if you want a fast cube with a small, gummy feeling silicone, wait one. So, as you can see, these loops have a ton of different applications, and it really just depends on the way you solve the Q B or using the type of speed that you're at or the type of solving that you do. It really just depends on you and your cube, and you're set up in your preferences completely. There's tons different loops than what I have included here. This is just a very a very small list of loops that you could go with. But if you wanted my recommendation, I feel like with Traxis 30 K and D. N. M. 37. These two of the combination are very, very good. Use the tracks is for the core and a tiny bit on the pieces. Very tiny, bit like a rice sized amount or two. And then, like a drop or two of dnm. And these two will not only give you stability, they'll also make your cube extremely fast. So consider possibly picking these two up, which yet again, links to pick these up will be in the course description. And just so you know, in case you guys were interested, I do have a course that's already uploaded. I'll actually post the thumbnail right here for you. So you guys can go take a look at that. So if you do decide to pick up any of these loops, you can see how to do it. Yeah. 6. Use the Color Scheme to your Advantage: now, another thing that's considered to be pretty important in the Cuban world is understanding the color scheme of your cube. If you already know your cubes color scheme, you might as well skip this little video right here and move onto the next one. But I just want to touch on a couple of things for some people. All right, Now, I'm going to be getting these cubes right here, and we're gonna have the colors face the same direction. So now if you notice this the way this is set up, we have all the colors facing the same direction. So notice how these air All orange right here, if you can see that one, this one's oranges. Well, so these are all orange. These are all red you could see. So they're gonna have the same color scheme regardless. Even if I grab this four by four over here way have orange to the right. Then we have read to the left. So if you memorize your color scheme of your cube, it's gonna make life a lot easier for you when the time comes for you to solve your cross or get your f too well pairs or whatever you want Tokyo or even knowing you're a U. F at the end of assault, it's gonna be really helpful for you to understand that color pattern. 7. Cross Neighbors: Now I'm gonna be showing you what I like to refer to as neighbors now with neighbors. I have the scramble here, and this is what I mean by it. So let's say we have this one right here. This is ready to roll, and then let's take a look. We got this one that could just go down and move over. Once similar to this one, it's already there. Just needs to be moved over once. So we got this one that could go down like that. We have this orange one up here that could be placed like this and just need to be moved over once, so we keep that in mind. So it looks like we got a solution now, So we know this red cast move over one time, so we're gonna base the entire cross off of moving that one. Time to finish everything off. So I know this has to be moved one time. I know if I bring this orange down that this green will move over, Aziz. Well, and this is what I mean by that. Just like that. So the orange is ready to move over once to be lined up with that orange, and this green is in position to move over. Wants to be lined up with that green. So now when you move this one time, you get all four of you cross pieces. So that's what I refer to his neighbors. And if you run into an instance where you could use that, it's going to be very beneficial. So keep that in mind. And if how I got that cross confused you a little bit, you want to make sure that you solve your cross on the bottom. That's another tip that you're gonna want to make sure that you imply that you apply moving forward if you don't already do it. If you guys are interested in learning how exactly to get your cross on the bottom, I have a course that I already posted where I explain that in great detail. So go ahead and take a look at that, and hopefully you guys will learn not only how to do that very quickly, but if you're still doing still doing beginners method for whatever reason, it also show you how to get your corners very quickly and with no keep rotations 8. Fingertricks!: Now, this tip is gonna be very important to anybody who wants to solve quickly at any range. If you're solving in seven seconds or you're solving in two minutes, if you want to solve faster, you have to know this trick. It's called finger tricks. I have a course for it. Opposed. Thumbnail. Here I go into great detail in the different types of finger tricks that you can use what they are and how to use them. But to put things simply, Ah, finger trick is essentially where if I wanted to insert this corner down here because I have my cross already done, I would have to open the door, step in and close the door. But instead of doing it like this to do that movement or that to get it out, I could simply leave my hand where it is and insert it without taking my hands off the cube . This is using finger tricks. Finger tricks are gonna make your algorithms flow very, very well, just like inserting that after well, pair. There's a lot of different applications for it, but you can use it in pretty much everything. So even this situation here I would do this to do that, and this is using F too well, but you can do it without having take your hands off. So if you don't know finger tricks, or maybe you feel like there's some finger tricks that you should learn that you have been forcing yourself not to, it might be something to consider, and I would highly recommend going to take a look at that course, and you might find some information that you'll find helpful. 9. F2L: All right, now we're getting to the meat and potatoes of how to get faster. So if you are solving using beginners method, you need to stop getting past 35 seconds. I would say if you're solving faster than 35 seconds using beginners method, then you've stuck with beginners method too long. You're going to want to move on to two things and I'd recommend one over the other one is going to be learning f too well. And if you don't know what f to l is, after all stands for 1st 2 layers and it is a very fast way of getting the corner and the edge at the same time very efficiently. So you're not just getting the corner, then the edge. You're getting them both at the same time, and you do the same thing for the other three sections that will solve your whole 1st 2 layers. So you have to learn that to move faster. And I have a course on that as well. And I'm sorry I keep throwing all these some nails that you guys. But a lot of this stuff I have covered in really good detail in my previous courses, so I don't want to just, you know, beat a dead horse. If you guys want to get more detail into that, go and take a look at that course, and I'll give you all the information that you need. All right. Now, before I talk a little bit further, let's move over to black screen. All right? Now, welcome to the black screen. Now there are things that we have to understand in order to be able to solve in less than 30 seconds, this is going to be assuming that you're using the C fought method. And if you guys are unfamiliar with C fought method, it stands for cross F to L o L l and pillow Those together in concert are a system known as C fob. So you start off by getting the cross. Then you start off by getting your 1st 2 layers. Then you end up orienting the last layer, and then you end up commuting the last layer. So that is the system I'm gonna be referring to. And if you guys are wanting to be able to solve in less than 30 seconds, you're going to want to roughly follow these guidelines. First thing is, you want to make sure that your cross is five seconds or less. If you can get an efficient cross in eight moves or less and get it done in less than five seconds, you're good. Next, you're gonna want to be able to solve your entire F too well in 15 seconds or less. And lastly, your old ill and peel Oh, your entire last layer should be completed in 10 seconds or less. This will equate if you use all of those times to 30 seconds flat. So you're gonna want to shave a second or so off of at least one of those things, preferably it being the cross or improving your F 12 through practice. 10. Introduction to Lookahead: All right. So let's say you did all the steps. You got your finger tricks down. You ended up learning f too well, and you're feeling confident in it. And you're still having a hard time breaking that 32nd barrier. Here is the next step you need to accomplish, assuming your that you're still working on old LPL or full awful people will get to that later in F, too. Well, since after all is gonna be like the meat and potatoes of your whole solve. You want to be extremely proficient in that you're not necessarily at the level yet for the need of look ahead. If you can get to that point, that would be awesome. But that's more of an advanced topic. I'll talk in a different video about now or if you guys are interested in learning it. I have a post. So you guys take a look at that. If you want to learn more about, look ahead. But I would say you shouldn't have to really worry about. Look ahead until you're in the 2018 and 20 seconds solve time range, then look ahead becomes really, really beneficial after that. So for f too. Well, we have this case right here. You should be able to close your eyes and efficiently handle that case without having to worry about it. You don't want to be able to think about how you're handling that. You want to be able to see the case that you're looking at and then immediately tackle it without the need for looking at it. This is where, like I would say, What is it? Using your brain is very detrimental. You don't want to be thinking when you're figuring out these solutions. Kind of like how I'm doing these algorithms. I'm able to talk. It's all muscle memory. You want all of your have to all cases that you can run into to be muscle memory. So that way you can focus on the next thing versus the one that you're currently solving that will stop your pausing. And that'll cut those pauses out as long as that you can do it effectively. It's not necessarily look ahead. It's just kind of preparing. You get to get ready for look ahead. Right now, all you're trying to do is just make sure that all of those complicated cases or improper pairs in the top layer that you see, you don't have to think about doing it. You can just do it and that is what you want to get. Teoh, If you guys air interested in learning how to handle some more difficult cases, I have a course for that as well, Cigarette and take a look at that and spend some time over there learning some of these more complicated cases. So that way, whenever you see him, you just knock it out. 11. Full OLL, Full PLL, or 2-Look?: All right, you guys, onto the fun stuff. This time we're gonna be talking about your last layer. If you are having a hard time breaking 30 seconds and you are still doing the last layer using the beginners method that you cannot you got to stop. You got to stop. Just drop the beginners method last layer completely and start working on to look, if you don't know what to look is basically you have there's see fop, which is the Olympia low. And then there's to look old l to look pillow. So see fop see fop lasting is old lp low olo means toe orient all of the all of the stickers on that layer on the last layer and then you're going to per mute those stickers and there's gonna be one algorithm for each one algorithm for orienting and one algorithm for per muting. If you think about it, that's a lot of algorithms. There's gonna be 21 per mute algorithms. Notice peels and there's gonna be 57 orientation algorithms. That was Olo. That's gonna be a lot of frickin algorithms for you Learn. But if you end up going through to look you end up learning significantly less now a to look, we're gonna be narrowing down the 57 different possible cases. You can get here down to just seventh and then we're going to be taking the 21 different possible cases for per muting. And we're going to narrow that down to only five total algorithms that you need to know, and that's gonna make solving this significantly faster. So definitely consider learning to look, because that's gonna drop your time down a lot. 12. Reevaluate your Algorithms: all right, now for this part of the course, I'm gonna be telling you guys something that not very many people will tell you. But it is extremely important to drop your times down, and that is simply too reevaluate your algorithms. Everyone that is learning how to solve ends up getting ahold of an algorithm as they're learning to drop their times down. And they will stick with that algorithm for the rest of her life. Probably exaggerated. But for a very, very long time, I would say longer than necessary. They're gonna stick with that really bad algorithm. Little do they know that there's a way better algorithm that Tim down the street or whatever knows on this particular case that's way faster, has less re grips or has no regrets at all. It's incredibly finger trick friendly, and it can knock out an algorithm in half the time. So if you get a hold of a really good algorithm for certain cases, you're not only going to want to hold on to it for dear life, but also sharing those algorithms with the rest. Acute community is extremely extremely appreciated. Whenever a speed keeper gets a hold of a new algorithm that's better than the last one. We kind of see it as like a It's like a cheat code. We're really excited about it because we I just found a secret to unlock a little bit more speed. It's really, really, really gratifying. This is a you perm. I did it on the blue side just because I typically solve green and then blew, but don't worry about it, but basically, this edge needs to go here. This edge needs to go here and that edge news to go here. There is a simple appeal out algorithm for this which looks like this to knock out that algorithm. However, I ended up looking at this and I'm like, OK, that's gonna be a lot of different re grips is gonna be one so that this is one to three. Three re grips for that. So I went through a ton of re grips on that, and you know, of course, you got to worry about the time that it takes. I'm able to go down from that algorithm which has three re rips down to this one, which has not. So it's definitely beneficial to learn better algorithms than the ones that you currently no find your worst algorithms that you have, or the ones that you hate the most and find a better solution for it. You might make the algorithm up yourself or might be a derivative or some Frankenstein solution. Teoh a case that you run into pretty often or you could just simply come across it with faster keepers. See what albums that they use. That's what I did when I was learning. So definitely reevaluate your algorithms and always look for a better solution. 13. The Great Slow-Down!: All right, you guys. Now, the last tip that I have for you, it's gonna be very simple, and it's gonna be solved slowly. And what I mean by solve slowly is I don't necessarily mean toe, actually, slowly solve your cube like you're in slow motion. It's not what I'm talking about. So the goal was solving slow is we're trying to train our brains to force us to look for the next thing to do. Now, this is just training you to get ready for. Look ahead. That's all this is. So, for instance, we have this case right here, and this one can simply go back here like this. That's a nice, simple, fast solution in order to get that piece in there. So now I got this set up right here. So what I'm gonna do is just insert that like this, and as I do that I'm following this piece right here, and I know it's edges over here. So as I saw this, I immediately go into solving that one. Now I'm solving slowly. But you also want to make sure that you saw fast enough where it's actually a challenge for yourself. Toe look for the next piece. Now, you probably don't really want to focus on this unless you're closer to 25 seconds. But if you have the time and you just want to get a couple of practice solves in than going a little bit slower to your limit, I would say it's probably gonna be a good way to practice. And also if you run into a case that you know, but you kind of forgot, you just need a little bit longer to think about it. Stop the solve, figure out that solution. Force yourself to figure it out. Look it up. Whatever you got to dio, just make sure that any time you run into a case that you already know how to dio, regardless of how long it takes you to do it properly, take the time to do it, even if it ruins a good solved because that's going to reinforce in your brain that that solution is for that case and then your recognition, because those two will be linked together will be very fast.
