BEGINNER WATERCOLOR COURSE - Learn to Paint this Window Scene

Have you ever wanted to take up watercolors, but found most classes are too heavy and academic? These classes are similar to a Paint Night but we use watercolors. The classes are Easy, and no basic knowledge of watercolors are needed. You can usually finish your first painting under 2 hours.

1. Windows Introduction: Hi Kelly chassis here and of an artist and instructor and I'll be teaching you how to pay in watercolor today. This is a very simple course, similar to like a paint night that you would take out at a bar or a restaurant. You through it step by step, is very simple, very easy for beginners. These course, what will be painting is this main seen nor ocean scene. And this was one, ah that I took a picture of. Actually, this is where it was married, and it's looking through the window. So this is an old bed and breakfast window, and you can see the pains, the old pains in the window and we have islands in the background. We have details on trees. There's some birds back there, and we'll go over all that, and my courses will had to paint in the sky and how to do clouds with watercolor. Love to see your results at the end. So happy painting So I have a list here of everything you'll need, and you'll be able to print this as a PdF so you could take it to your local stores to get your supply. 2. Window Lesson1 (Materials): so to get started, we'll need to pour some water color paper, and I'm gonna be using £140 cold press paper for this class. Any of a smooth side and you have a rough side will be painting on that rougher side. We'll also be using a backer board, and this is just a nice thin foam board that we can use to tape down our painting or paper to, so that we don't get any buckling when we start to add the water to it. Now for watercolor paints, you can use any kind of pains. I'm happy to be using some pan paint Cesaire made by Windsor Newton. There great little starter kit. Catch out our painting scene, and I also use a black Sharpie a lot of times just for some fine detail. Work also to sign my work at the very end, if you need to use an eraser, I would recommend using a nice polymer racer. So are your paper, and I'll be using a light wash brush oval brush. Really, any medium size brush will do, and also you want to make sure that it's nice bristle so that you have a nice amount of water that can be absorbed by that brush. Also, you don't need a fine detail brush. This one comes with our Windsor Newton kits. A nice little fine sable brush that I used a lot in my paintings water for most of my classes. Again, I have a clean water and when I have one that they use for dirty. So that way I always have some fresh water so it doesn't muddy up your your paints. And then another thing will need are some paper towels, and we'll just use this for cleanup. And also when we change our brushes, if we need to take extra water off of our brush, we can use that. So one more thing we'll need is some masking tape or some blue. This is Blue Painter's tape, just regular three M tape, and what I'm gonna do here is just tape up all of these corners on my paper in this bull. Keep the paper down when we start to add water to it, and by putting it on, this backer board will be able to turn and change on the direction of as we're painting a little bit easier than having something taped directly down onto our table. So it's all taped down here now, and I've given myself just enough space around. They're about 1/4 Angelelli around. So this eight by 10 Matt will fit perfectly on there. And as you can see, there's no blue tape showing. One of final Thing that will need is a small tube of white Wash and will use this for our window frame area. 3. Window Lesson2 (sketching): it's already too sketching or drawing of our window. And I have here a protractor. You could use a ruler, and I also have an eraser. So what I'm gonna do is find my center point of this painting first, and then I'm gonna go just above that center point because this window is not directly in the middle of our painting. It's an old window. So we're gonna come up a little bit higher, and we're going to start our line right here. And then we're gonna do a second line, and this is gonna be our bottom windowpane or our cell area There's gonna go straight across and then down the center, we're gonna basically make a T. We're gonna have this directly in the center of those two line. So I'm looking at this now, and I think we're gonna have to do is move that bottom line down just a little bit because that bottom window is a little bit larger than that top window. So let's go ahead and erase that, and we're gonna go ahead and bring that down just a little bit further and again, this doesn't have to be perfect measurements this isn't older window. And when we go to paint this in will be able to do some adjusting on this. So don't worry about it too much, even if it's not perfectly straight. Okay, so now we're gonna do is it's gonna be your island in the background. And when I've done is I started from the top left corner, and I've come just slightly into that bottom or the top right side. So we have a little bit of that island that's over here in this corner as well. It's kind of peeking through, and then we're gonna do is draw a straight line from that island on this side. This is gonna be our water line, and it looks a little strange right now, but we're gonna put our two little mounds and mounds of islands in the background. And if you are ever visiting me and usually mean as thes islands off in the distance and that's what the's are here world in with their sketchy and I will get ready to start our sky background 4. Window Lesson3 (Painting sky): All right, so we have this all sketched, and now what I'm gonna do is grab my large wash brush and you can use any size brush If you have a larger one. That's just makes a little bit easier, cause so what I'm gonna do is just put a nice big puddle of water in here. So the bigger your brushes use a little bit more water you can add to this and I'm gonna make a nice light wash and amusing ultra marine blue Here and again you can use any colors that you like. If you want a lighters guy, come a lighter sky. If you want something with more of a pink to it, you can do more redder Blizzard crimson with that set this down I'm just gonna take my small brush and I just want you to see the difference between the washes. So where I've added the water, you can see this is a nice light wash. And if I want this little darker, I'm going into my pigment here. We're barely has any water. So see how rich and dark that is so you can make your sky Like I said, any um, any richness that you want dark light, any color you want. But we're gonna go with blue here, that ultra marine blue. And I'm just gonna fill this in across the top here. And when I'm doing this, I'm just kind of doing this back and forth motion. But I'm also doing this tapping motion and you can see where I have a little texture and they're almost looks like clouds already. I'm gonna go in a little bit darker and you can adjust as long as you're painting is still wet. You could add other colors in here and tricked show. What you don't want to do is you want to make it muddied, but we're just using one particular color so that that won't happen. So now that we have this filled in, what I'm gonna do is grab a tissue or paper towel, whatever you have on hand and I'm gonna ball it up. And I'm just gonna tap out some of that background color. And the harder you push the mawr pigment, you will pull from the painting and my clouds. I'm kind of doing a minute angle. So they have, like the soft flowing motion. Is it going up to the right side? I like the looks of that. And I've also got a kind of been behind where we're gonna put our trees there as well. So now we're just gonna do a quick little blow dry. We want to make sure this is nice and dry before our next step. And I'm gonna let this just kind of run this time just so you can see roughly how long this takes to blow dry. You want to make sure that when you go to the next step, it doesn't bleed into that sky. So this is why we make sure this is really dry before we go to the next step. I think we're just about good. 5. Window Lesson4 (Ocean): all right, We have that all dry nail, or we're gonna move on to our next step, which is going to be to paint our ocean area. And what I'm using is that same puddle of ultra marine blue. And to that, I'm gonna add a little fellow blue, which is more of a as a green, green, blue. And if you want to make it a little bit Richard Green, which makes a pretty ocean and you add a little bit of that berating hue to it as well, because he had tested the color here. And I'm gonna l a bit more of the else marine to see if I like that better. Now the trick Teoh testing your colors and you want to move quickly because you don't want those two streaks too dry so you could see I'm blending those in pretty quickly. And I'm gonna start with that back section here because we want that to be the darkest, richest shakes that's further away by those back island areas. And then I'm just gonna take that same color, and I'm going to just blend it across nice and smooth strokes, adding a little bit more green. If you want to change up the color while it's still wet, you can do that. Make sure you cover up your tape areas here on the side. So if you mishandle spots there, fill those in and I'm blending that back and forth. And as I get down here, it's a little bit lighter, which is fine. And then don't go over your window sill you want. Make sure you stop it, that line right there. So the next I want to do is I want to add a little bit of light to that so it looks like the sun's kind of hitting the water. And so when I use a dry brush technique, so I'm wiping off that pain each time that I dragged my brush across and you can see how it leaves a little bit of light airy across there. What you don't want to do is continue to drag it without wiping it off, because all it will do is just move your pain around on the on the paper. I think that looks good there, and we'll go ahead and dry this and when im drying, I'd like to touch the paper just a little bit to see how dry it it's becoming. You want to make sure it's not damp when you go to your next step, because what happens is that wet will bleed into your next color. 6. Window Lesson5 (Sill): All right, we're ready now for our window sill area. And what I'm gonna be mixing up here for a color is more of a natural wood color. So I'm gonna be using the yellow okra for this. And if you have a different color windows, so of course you can change this up. If you have blue on your pick one of you have white. You can make this any color you want, but I'm gonna do this more of a natural green type of wood window sill, and I'm using my little brush. Just take it up to that line here. You can use your large brush it if you're if you feel comfortable with that. And I'm just gonna go ahead and fill the rest of this end and I've switched to my larger brushes. You can see because it's will go a lot quicker for you with a large brush. And I feel that that's a little bit light. So I'm gonna go back into my pigment hearing a little heavier with a color. And I was gonna while it's still wet, add that to it. And I think what we'll do here is add just a little bit of the beseeched. The burnt Sienna are the burnt Sienna, and that will give it a nice little depth to that. It almost looks like a wood grain. And I tapped it in there while it was still wet. So that's gonna pretty much disperse through the yellow ochre on here. And then we'll go ahead and we're just gonna blow dry this one as well, and we'll make sure that that is nice and dry before we move on to our next step. 7. Window Lesson6 (Trees): All right, So now that we have the background layer in there, we have a full wash over our entire painting. We're gonna mix up a little bit of the sap green, and we're gonna make some trees in the background. And with the sap green, I'm going to use my little brush. And I'm just going to kind of mixes pain up and throw it in here or any Which way? I'm just gonna go tap it in, and I'm not worrying about it. Too much of just going to kind of fill in this area. And we have that blue background already on there. And the reason we do that is to make a nice, rich green, because without that, blue would be very transparent. And we want this to be nice and thick. We want some heavy paint. We want a lot of shadows and a lot of light in this in this area. So I'm just skin just taking in that sap green and just kind of tossing it in there all over the place. And you could see my brush marks or going all different directions in here. I'm adding thicker paint in some sections. which looks nice because it looks a little darker. And some sections it looks a little as like a shadow area in here. And I'm just gonna fill that in and when it rents my brush off and then we're going to go into our pale yellow. And if you don't have pale yellow, you can use lemon yellow. You could pretty much use any of you could even use the yellow car if you want. But what we're shooting for here is just some light and some dark and gonna take. It's a cad yellow. Where is gonna take that kind of tap that in there again? And just random sections. You just want to kind of tap it. And this stays wet while we're doing this process because we want this to kind of blend, and some of this area will be a little lighter. Some will be a little darker and it gives it a texture, or it looks like trees back there layers of um so now what I'm gonna do is mix up a little bit of the ultra marine blue and I don't have a clean palette, so I'm just gonna go right over this yellow ochre, which is fine because yellow and blue make green, which is what we're going for here. We want a nice, rich green, so I'm gonna add just a little bit of that burnt number two that the brown and it will make it a really nice, dark, rich pine tree type green. So I'm gonna tap that in there, and I'm starting off in the back section and I'm just layering these trees. I'm holding my brush Morning, a bright position for this. And if you need to make mix more paint up, go ahead and mix more paint up because you want this fairly thick, as you want it very dark. You don't want this real transparent and I'm continuing to tap, and I'm using the tip of my brush to give it that little tips of the trees in the background there. So you want to use just the tip of that brush If you have a fine brush, this works best for this area. And again, I'm just tapping in a little bit of shadow area here and there. Not really thinking about it. I'm moving pretty quickly with this, and if you're you know this is your first time making trees. You might think about a little bit more. But that's the key to this is Don't think about it. Just kind of pop some pain in there and we're gonna gonna adds a little bit more details later. But we just want to add some nice shadow in here. I'm just continuing tapping it in, adding paint where I need to. And you could kind of really work this. And the more you work, the more you had that color in there. The more realistic those trees look off in the distance again, I'm just doing a little bit more details, a little bit more layering. It's kind of playing in here with light in the dark, adding a little bit more trees in here, and what I'm gonna do to is down in the front here. Usually those trees will give a nice cast a nice shadow down the very front. So we're gonna add a little bit of darkness across the bottom area here. A swell. I'm just going back and forth, just kind of adjusting the colors mixing as I go. And now I think I'm gonna do is I'm gonna start those tips of those trees, and I just rolled my brush. I could get a nice, fine point on here. And if you have a smaller brush and you want to switch this out at this point, you can do that. And as you can see here, I'm just kind of making a little line up and in just doing a little bit of details just here and there. So it looks like little branches air sticking out. So those are the larger trees that are there showing up. You get a little bit more detail with those and again, I'm just continued to kind of taps on the extras in here. But you don't need a lot of detail. Does this again is far away, and if you look far away, you don't see a lot of details. It's just more or less the illusion of trees back here and again, just adding some darkness in here, and you can kind of play with us a little bit. Have fun with it right now. I think what we'll do is we'll start on our islands in the background, and again we'll start with a sap green and that I still have a lot of the other colors on here, so that's OK. These are often a distance again. So you're gonna want them fairly dark. And I'm just gonna fill in those too little islands of the background here. Someone's tapping in that sap green. You want to make sure that when you doing these islands, you start them small because they will tend toe grow on you as you start to fill things in . Or if you make a little mistake that comes down a little lower than you want, they grow. So I'm just gonna go into some of that darker shade. Now, when I tap some of that shadow area in here as well and what I did on the tips of these trees is I did the same thing I did on the other side with the island that was closer to us . You're just going to get that fine tip on the top of your brush and just gonna kind of pump up some little trees in the background there, just a little illusion of some trees back there. And I'm just adding this darker shade on the underneath of the islands here again because you always have that reflection from those trees. It gives it a little shadow area. It's kind of getting that out just a little bit on the side there. All right, I think that looks good and we'll go ahead and dry this now, nice and dry before we move on to our next steps. 8. Window Lesson7 (Island): Let's move on to those little islands again with some details and again, I'm going to use my small brush, Make sure it's nice and clean, and then I'm going to go into the yellow okra and we're gonna just put a very fine line. This is the area that has a little bit of rock. So it's This is a little coastal side, so usually has a little bit of reflection here from from the light and where those rocks tend to dry, they turn nice little tan color at the top. I'm gonna rinse this off, and I'm gonna go into my ultra marine and bird number or making my homemade black basically and there again, very fine line. And I'm coming on the underneath there to give that a nice, dark shadow area. Let's move on to our shadow area in the water, and if you're green, you've already previously mixed up has started to dry on you. You could just add some water to that, and you will reactivate that same color. If you don't have any left, you could go ahead and mix up some more of it again with the ultra marine blue bird number and sap green when I'm doing as I'm just gonna put a little bit of this color underneath of this island. And if you can kind of picture it on the left hand side If there was another island, we had some more trees. Those trees would be casting a reflection down on that water as well as if you have some rocks or some jagged edges on the left hand side where you have more of a beachy rocky beach area. So I'm just gonna kind of going left to right and making this a very jagged so you could see where it would be kind of like the tips of those trees. And this is just gonna be the shadowed area. I'm just kind of going back and forth. It's a little lighter here, so it's not all the same color throughout. And you can keep mixing paint, can adding the pain and you just want to get that light and dark and you want that edge on here. These were not all perfectly lined up, and I kind of have a C shape here is kind of scooped out. You're gonna make sure you go all way over into your second set of windows down the bottom here just a little bit. So it just brings brings your eye over to that right hand side as well. So now what I'm doing is I'm going into a little bit of the yellow okra, and when they put a little touch of that in there, this could be the rocks underneath Sandy Beach. You have a few different colors underneath that water. And again, this is just the shadowed area. Just filling that in there. You just can kind of just play with this area. You could change. This shape almost looks like an E now rather than the sea. And I'm just kind of popping in some color here and there, making that shaper that illusion of some shadows from the tips of those other trees back here and again. Your colors are gonna be different. And that's okay. He's Each time you mix up your paint, you're gonna have a little bit different shade. You're gonna be a little bit more, stop green and have a little bit more ultra marine blue. And I've taught this course a number of times, and every time I do this. I end up with some different colors on here. So let's go ahead and blow dry. This is well, and we'll move on to our next stage. 9. Window Lesson8 (SillShadow): really painting our shadow of our window. That's gonna be reflecting on the window sill down below. I'm just gonna look a little funny until we get the window actually painted in there. But I'm going to go into the yellow ochre out on to that when I had a little bit of the burnt Sienna and I'm gonna make a line very lightly. We don't want real thick paint for this. You want this fairly transparent, Transparent. So you want to add a lot of water to that color and I'm going slightly at an angle, As you can see here is that is that sun shines through. It's going to depend on where that shadow lives. We just don't want to. Great straight back. We want it slightly in an angle here. I know. I'm going to go into my whitewash. You have white wash, you don't have whitewash. You can also use the Chinese white, but you need to make it very thick, which means not a lot of water. And you want to do a lot of thick paint with that so it will show up, and all I'm doing is just adding a little bit of touch of highlights on these islands back here and down the front, and I went to the same thing in the water it is in, You know, those trees air reflecting on there. You're gonna have a little bit of twinkle, a little bit of reflection from the sun again. You can use the Chinese white for this, but wash works best because it's non transparent. So really will show up over these other colors. I'm just kind of tapping in here, here and there. It's dragging my brush across here just to give away just a little bit of reflection in the water. Go ahead to the same thing up here by those back islands. You kind of come down to the front. It's more white you put in here, the rougher this water is gonna look. So you could really put a lot in here if you want. You can also get a scratching motion with little bit of the white pain to get that little texture in there 10. Window Lesson9 (WindowGouache): So if you have quash, you can use your wash. No, I already have some. That's in my trace. I'm not gonna scored any extra in here. If you don't have washing of our time finding it, you can use the Chinese white that's in your Cotman kit. If you have a Cotman kit and you just want to make sure again that it's very thick pane, you'll it will be a little bit more transparent than what this white will be. But it's something that you can use if you don't have anything else as well as you could always use acrylic paints. But you would wanna watch through this whole section here before you use your critics because you don't want it to dry completely. You'd want to add some blue to that as well for your shadows. So what I'm doing is I'm just following those same pencil lines that I had drawn in here prior, and I'm just filling in where that line is with my white wash and against start smaller and let it grow. Because as you try to straighten these lines out, sometimes they get a little a little wider and you can have a narrow window. You could have a wide window, this window at Mississippi from an old in. That's up here in Maine. So these windows or the old pane windows? So this is, Ah, wide wide sill window. So I'm just gonna fill it in and trying to straighten it out as I go. You don't want to have too much back and forth with your with your white wash because it will happen is it will pull the green. It will pull the blue right through. So what you want to do is go ahead and put down one quote, let that dry, go the next section and work on that and then once strike and go back in and we can touch it up. So again, I'm just thickening this one. You could see where some of that green is kind of pulling through, but it turns it gray, and that's a nice, pretty look as well. I was gonna keep working on these and straining amount as I go along. This is why I wasn't too concerned when we're drawing our lines, if they are perfectly straight, you could paint them in more straight as you go along or they could become a cricket on you as well. But again, this is an old window. It's got lots of paint on it, layers of paint. And if you ever looking old window with layers of paint, you can see it's got a lot of bumps, and it's not perfectly straight. I wanna go down here on the bottom of the still area, and I'm gonna go ahead and fill this one in a swell. If you've ever looked at some of these older windows, so you can tell it they have a lot of character to them. That looks good. And I think we're gonna go ahead and blow dry. That and I hope yours is coming along well, we're moving on to the next steps here soon. 11. Window Lesson10 (Frame Shadow): we're not gonna add some touch ups to this, and you can see where this is dried No, completely and, like washes has a slight green great tint to it. So what I'm gonna do is just go ahead and to another coat right on top of what we had here . Just a whiteness up a little bit more, and you can see where I have the paint thinned out again a little bit by adding some water to it. Remember, if your window pane is a different color, or if you like that to gray greyish green color to this, you can just leave it the way it is. But if you want to have a nice bright white, you're maybe need to do a second coat of the wash, and you won't know that really, until that's completely dry. Because of wash does tend toe fade. A little better becomes more transparent sometimes, and you don't know that until it's actually dry, and you can see how the again was kind of thickens up or gets a little wider as you play with it and try to straighten it out. And I'm not too concerned about that at this point because we're gonna add a little bit of a dark blue for underneath shadow here soon So we could make this a little smaller again And bringing her I innovate. You feel it's a little bit too wide for what you're looking for, right? I think now we're ready for some shadow area for the shadow. I'm gonna use the ultra Marine blue And I have a little bit of the oak were in there and that's okay. I'm just gonna put that right on top of it. We just want a darker shade of blue here and I'm gonna come down on my left side This is the side that shadowed and you can see it My gosh is still wet and that's all right This is gonna blend a little bit And there's gonna take that blue line all the way down And that shadow line all the way down As I come back and forth you can see where this kind of thins thins out a little bit, Doesn't get it quite is dark but it turns more that gray tone again It gets in a nice soft shadows. It's not quite so stark this is where you could see this side. It's a little bit thicker. So when I add a little bit more the blue on this side and I'm gonna go underneath more on this side and come down the bottom of the sale and you're gonna have a shadow across here is well, and you could do any touch ups at that point. And then over here, this little T's spot, we have just a little bit of shadow where those two pains will cross. I'm gonna go ahead and put a little little shadow area in here is well in a mixing up a little, a little bit darker. And it's in Bern number two, that this is just where you can do a little bit of playing here and adjusting back in for to make sure that you get that line nice and straight, and you get the color in there that you want. You can have a darker shadow. You could have it lighter. Really, about your preference. I tend to like the little bit darker shadow, so if you feel you get it too dark, don't worry about it, because you can still blend some of that wash right over it. Toe. Lighten it up 12. Window Lesson11 (Final Details): right, So we're ready for the final details and like to at this point through a mat around my painting, just to see how it's coming along, If there's any adjustments that I want to make on it and I think that looks pretty good So we're gonna mix up some black again, and we're gonna do some details in this water area here, So I'm going to use the ultra Marine blue in the burn number, and I'm gonna get my brush with nice, fine point again. And I'm just gonna put just a touch of this black on here just to give it a little bit of depth. There's gonna follow along hair wherever you've created your your pattern area, and you're just gonna kind of touch up just along the edges of this, so it gives it a little bit of darkness and depth of that water. It looks a little deeper. A little little touches go a long way. So if you feel that that's just a little too sharp or too dark, you can lighten that up. And I just, uh went back into my yellow okra and I'm just kind of softening those edges and a few spots here. It's going over what I've just put in. So it's still wet, so it's gonna blend just a little bit. And if you like that dramatic darkness and there, of course, can leave it, do we have it? There's in a soften it just a hair here. So our mix up some more black here, if you have ivory black and you have you have a two black feel free two years that it's basically the same stuff. But we're gonna put some little burns in here and how I make those Burges their little be shape. And then their little wing kind of goes out. So we're gonna do five of these little buggers in here. Coming it. They're flying at different angles, you see, Then I'll shape the same way. And then if you rinse off your brush and a little bit of that wash, you can touch a little white in there. So it looks like their Siegel's that air flying off in the distance, and you're just gonna just tap just in the centre. That bird just a little dash a white again with birds, you wanna make them smaller. The bigger they are, the closer they look like they're to you. So sometimes I accidentally have these big eagles flying in there cause it gets too big. You could also use a black Sharpie for the birds. That that's easier putting my mat on and see what I think going back into my black and now deciding aware I'm gonna sign it. I think we're finished. So at this time, I'm gonna Instead of using a black Sharpie, I'm going to show you here with my brush. You can in a very fine tip on this brush, and you still consign with that as well.
