1. Introduction: How everyone Thank you so much for joining me today. My name is now Schwab. I'm a freelance illustrator and graphic designer in this class. I'm going to show you how to illustrate the folk story using Adobe Illustrator. We are going to talk about what full cart is and how it looks like. And then we will choose a folk story to illustrate. After that, I'm going to walk you through my whole process of finding inspirations, generating motives from natural elements, designing decorative elements in Adobe Illustrator and study the basic elements that we are going to use in our illustrations to simplify them and use the motives that we generated to decorate them. And then we're going to make thumbnail sketches to capture our ideas, refining the final Skitch and illustrating our final piece. So without further ado, let's get started 2. What is Folk Art?: in this lesson, we are going to talk about what full court is on, how it looks like. So basically full card is the type of art that reflects the culture off specific society on Some may call it naive art because it's not restricted to the drawing rules like the proportions. For example, there are many styles off the full card that you can see. There are the geometric on and the balanced style. There are the organic and loose style. Here we are focusing on the folks story illustrations, so the folk story illustrations is usually consists off the basic elements on the decorative elements. So, for example, in this illustration we can see that the basic element is the woman's head, which is decorated using floral multi on Duma Trick Maltese, and you can see that the style of this illustration is more geometric and symmetrically balanced. So symmetrical balance is one of the concepts off composition we can see in symmetrically balanced illustration that the left part of the illustration is equal to the right part of the illustration. Usually the basic elements off the folk story or humans or animals. Onda. We try to simplify these elements into its basic shapes on. Then we use some decorative elements like floral motives, for example, to decorate the strips. Here's, for example, another style for the folk story illustration, so you can see it's very loose. It's organic. Another style, which is symmetrically balanced, as you can see here of the artist, drove the elements in its basic shapes on do some geometric motifs to decorate them. Here is another example, which is more loose, and the artist used some flora motives to decorate the elements. In the next lesson, we're going to choose our folks story. 3. Choosing a Folk Story : So for your folks story, you can choose whatever folk story you'd like to illustrate. You can find them on the Internet, toe over in books, or even you can illustrate the folk story that's famous in your country. I got my folks story from this book. It's about kiddos arm full floor. Cabazon is one of the ethnic groups in Sabah, Malaysia. It has a lot of folk stories in it. I chose one story called Tom PP. Tom PP is a songbird that when it sinks, the rain falls, the flowers bloom and the trees grow. The big birds became jealous, often peopie. They attacked it and forced it to escape. After the rain stopped, everything died. But the brave, better fly looked for Tom PB and convinced it to come back and sing again to save the village. So now we are going to design on the main elements off this illustration, so we have to be be, which is the main character. And we know that on BP sings and when it sings, the rain falls, the flowers bloom and the trees grow. These also elements that we can use as a decorative elements. We also have the big birds, which the second main character we know that these birds are not friendly. They attacked and baby and forced it to escape the village. And then we have our third character, which is the batter fly. So the main three characters that we could use in this illustration is Tom PP The big birds , Andi Butterfly. And then we can use the trees and the flowers to decorate this illustration. In the next lesson, we are going to see how can we get some inspirations? 4. Getting Inspiration: Now I want to show you to me books that I got inspiration from for illustrating folk stories, the 1st 1 is Imagine the Forest by the narrow Martelli Bova. This book explores in hours techniques in designing Eastern European folklore traditions. It has design guide instructions to draw many things like flowers, insects, birds, animals, fairytales, people, decorative elements and let drink. Yes, the second book is Creative Folk Art and Beyond. This book features the whimsical and colorful folk art style off Scandinavia. It includes creative prompts, easy exercises and step by step projects. There are also two websites that's very useful for getting inspiration. The 1st 1 is Pinterest. You can easily search on anything you want a Pinterest, and you can find thousands off examples and different styles. So here, for example, I searched for folk art illustration, and as you can see, there are hundreds off stars that you can get inspiration from. The 2nd 1 is behinds, and what I like about the hands is that you can review the whole process off the project. From sketches to the final artwork, you can also check a Dinara armor Talib over his profile on Instagram it has a lot off illustrations that she did. You can get a lot of inspiration from following hairstyle, another artist that I really like her style, which is one of effort in the next lesson we are going to talk about, how can we generate motives? 5. Generating Motifs: Now we are going to talk about generating motives. So it's recommended when we generate motives to follow an artistic process which will makes things more easier on us. So we can start by getting inspiration from natural elements. These elements could be flowers, plants, fruits, vegetables, birds, fish, animals or anything that could inspire you so we could start by getting a reference photo for that element. So here, as you can see, I got a flower that I wanted to get some inspiration from. And then I make a watercolors kitsch, and this is important to get to know the basic form off this element, Andi, to study the shape of it after we study the basic shape off this element, then we can simplify it. Like as you see here, I draw the basic shape off this flower, and then we can play with this simple form that we draw. We can make some alterations to make the motive more interesting. So as you can see here, for example, I made the central part pointed as the sides. We can make a lot of things by using this small unit off the motive. We can incorporate it into a pattern. As you can see in this one, I used some swear lines and some leafy shapes, and we created the better that's we can use in many thing else. So here is another two examples off the flowers that I generated Maltese from, As you can see in the top part, I got reference photo, and then I made a watercolor sketch to understand the form off this flow er, and then I tried to simplify the shape of the flower to the best of I could, and I used some decorative elements to just play with the shape to make it more interesting . So I used some fillers to fill the bottom of the flower and in the top and some stroke lines, and I made another motive of it, which I made some differences to it. The second flower. I also got a reference photo for it, Andi. Then I made a watercolor sketch to understand the better. And then I simplified the shape of a flower to its basic form. So, as you can see here, I just put some dots in between the flower petals to make it more interesting. So here is another example because off my story is from Sabah Malaysia. I tried to search for some elements that can be found in the environment. So I got this rampant country that I will use in my illustration. So, as you can see, I also get the reference photo and I studied by making a watercolorist kitsch. And we can easily simplify the shape off this tree by making some lines on these lines ended with a circle which is the rambutan fruit itself and then the hairy projections that arise from the rambutan fruit. We can make it as simple strokes that arise from the center off the circle. And here is the final result that I did buy Adobe Illustrator. I highly encourage you to search for things that inspire you on. Try to generate motives from using the same process that I've showed you. I'm very interested to see your motives in your project section 6. Making Decorative Elements in Adobe Illustrator: So now we are going to learn how to design some decorative elements. In Adobe Illustrator, you can use thes elements to decorate any shape you want. So the first thing that I'm going to do is I'm going to draw a circle using the shape to on In order to make it perfectly proportional, I will click shift while I drag. I will give its a black fill and I will make you will make it a little bit smaller. And I want to make a pattern off the circle. So I will go to the object menu. Andi, I will choose better and make. So, as you can see, this menu allows us to control a lot of things that we are going to do to this pattern, like, for example, the time off it. So you can choose, uh, break by colon bread or anything you would like. And you can even control the distance between each circle. So here, for example, I will make it a lot of distant from each other. And if you are satisfied with this shape, you click done and I will make no another circle and fill it with the pattern that we created. So you will find the pattern in the filming. You their ego. We have a pattern off circles. You can make patterns this way off any shape you like. The next thing that I would like to show you is how to make a brush. So I'm going to choose the store tool and I will drag and you can see we have a triangle. You can control how many angles the shape has by pressing the up arrow key or the down arrow key. So I want Teoh have a triangle shape. So as you can see, the triangle is not stabilized. It moved all around, so if I want to stabilize it, I click shift and I will give it up like fools. And then I'm going to draw a circle just next to this triangle just to make some variation in the brush that we will create. And I'm going to choose them both. Andi, it's better to have a brush menu activated so you can find it under window under the window menu. Search for the brush, and then you can drag the triangle on the circle into the brush menu. So the pop up will appear will ask us what type of brush that we would like their scatter brush or brush and pattern brush. So we want bathroom brush on this pop up menu appeared to just give us the ability to do whatever alterations that we'd like. I like to unq like the corner brush because I feel a distorted somehow and I would name it my own brush. There you go. And then you can You can control a lot of things in this box. I like Teoh control the method. Here you shift so I can color it if I like and very go you have a brush. So if I like to test it, I will draw online using the pen tool, for example. And then I will click enter to exit the both And then I will choose the brush that I just did on. And we have, ah, lovely decorative elements in here that we can use to decorate anything. So now we're going to continue with another technique that we can design a lovely decorative element with. So I draw a circle using the shape toe. Let me move it so you can see more clearly. Then I would go to the object, meaning you and them all add anchor points. So as you can see, it added more anchor points to the shape. And then I'm going to the same in your object. Both and then I will choose at another anchor points so that you can see there. There is more anchor points to the shape now then I'm going to effect mean you distort, transform bucket on bloat And then you need to activate a preview so that you can see the changes. And you can see while I slide this point on the slider, you can see how it creates. Ah, lovely shapes that we can use. So if you are satisfied with the result, click OK, and you have of floral decorative element the last one that I'm going to show you by using the electrical tools I will draw on electrical shape so that I would not press shift on. Then I will go to select the ankle point from the mental. Maybe you and I will click on this anchor point so you can see that it became pointed rather than curved. And then I'm going to select the points on each side by clicking shift, and then, by pressing the down arrow key, you can see that it changed to a teardrop shape. After that, I'm going to click on the shape, and then I we're going to select the Rotate Tool, and I will select the point that I want the shape to rotate around. And then I will drag and click old so that I can duplicate the shape. After that, I'm going to select this shape and select the reflect to Andi again. So, like the point that I want the shape to reflect around by pressing old on drag. And there you go. Now we have a lovely floral motive that we can use as a decorative element to decorate any shape. So feel free to play with these techniques, and I can't wait to see the results in your project section. 7. The Artistic Process: in this lesson, we are going to learn about the artistic process. So the artistic process is something that helps us organize our work. Flew on, also achieve a better results. So now we are going to study each element off my story, which is Tom PB Andi. I will begin with some peopIe itself, which is the main character of the story. Soto. BP is a bird, Andi what I needed to dio The first thing in the artistic process is to study the shape off the rial birds. So I've studied the form off the bird, the details, the wings, the tails that peaks the bird's eye, everything actually about the birds, and I will study it from different positions. This step is very important to get to know the shape off your elements. Andi, it's important to have some reference voters to help you with that. After a study, the shape and I totally know the form and the details. Then I will simplify this shape into the main basic shapes. So as you can see here, for example, for the tail are used some feather shaped on. And as you can see for the body, I really simplify it it into the main elements. Andi. I used some, you know, floral elements to decorate it. You can't simplify the shape into organic shapes or geometric shapes. So as you can see in this bird in the bottom, it's very dio metric. I used mainly triangles, Teoh, simplify it, and I just used also some triangle motives to decorate the shape of the body. Other birds that I simplified, I gave it a different pose. As he can't see Andi, I used some floral elements to decorate its shape. I also played a water, but with the shape off the tail, Teoh draw it like a feathery shape. And here is the decoration face, where I used the motives to decorate the shape off the bird. So as you can see, for example, I decorated the wing using some triangles. Motives. Andi, the body I decorated using some florin motives. At this phase, it's very important to experiment toe play with the shapes. There is no right and wrong, and you have to make a lot of bad art in order to make a good ORT. So feel free to play and experiment as much as he can. So you, for example, you can see I experimented with the symmetrical of shape. I draw the wings with a ship with the same shape on both sides. And I also decorated the body using some floral motives. I played a little bit with the shape of the tail on and I used the dots off the rain in in order to indicate that when Tom pp sings the rain falls, I also experimented with this shape where I just raised one wink. Andi kept the other one to be beside Andi. I also used basic shapes for decoration like triangles and dots on the same idea off the dots off rain which come out from one off dumpy bees wings. So here is another example. Also, we're still in the artistic process on, and this process is for the second character in the story, which is the big birds. So I also study it realistically, using some reference photos. And as you can see, I study everything about the the big birds, like the form, the wings, the details of the wing, I study it from different poses. This is important to give you an eye on the idea off what the simplified shape should looks like. And this phase is where I simplified the shape of a big bird into the main simple shapes, and I played a little bit with the tail also. And as you can see, I made the tail pointy as if it's arrow, because these birds are not friendly and they attacked baby. So I needed to give them a little bit off aggressiveness, crowns also pointy like the tail, and I used some arrow motives to decorate their bodies. So it indicates more aggressiveness and some triangular shape to decorate the wing. And as you can see, I also experimented with more poses. So this one is flying. The other one is flying too, but with a different pose off wing. So here is another example that I did for the Butterfly. In the story, we have the better fly as the third character. So I also studied a realistic butterfly. I studied the shape of the wing, the details off the wing. Andi, I studied from the side pose. I simplified the butterfly into the basic form, and then I decorated it, using some flora multi that I showed you before, So feel free to experiment with the characters off your folk story on. And I'm very excited to see the result that you will come up with in your project section. In the next lesson, we are going to draw some from nails. Kitsch is all right. 8. Thumbnail Sketches: way are going to do some family and sketches. So from these kitchens are basically a small sketches that helps us to put down our ideas on the paper. Andi, the most important thing about family in sketches is that they help us to decide on the composition that we are going to use in our illustration. What we're going to do in the thumbnail sketch is to draw our story elements and try to find a relationship between each element on the other. The details are not important in the thumbnail sketches phase, so you you better get lose Andi, just capture the main idea that's come to your mind, and you can use many techniques in order to make the composition off the illustration. You can, for example, make it symmetrical. Lee balanced. You can make it asymmetrically. Palance. You can draw shapes on, then try to figure out where the elements off your story could fit in. So here, for example, as you can see in the first thumbnail sketch that I did, I followed the symmetrical Lee balanced composition. You can draw as many thumbnail sketches as you'd like. I just drove three off them here for the time purpose, but feel free to draw as many off them because they are very useful. Teoh reach a visual appealing composition for the sketching I used adore before the shop. But Fif free to use any material you like or any media you would like because the purpose is to have fun. So use the method that you are comfortable with. - So as you can see, I draw three thumbnails sketches and I really like the last one. I like the pose off the better fly from the side view. I also like the symmetrically balanced composition. Please share your thumbnail sketches in your project section. 9. Revised Sketch: Now we are going Teoh dio a revised skitch off the thumbnail sketch that we really like. So I chose the third family in Skitch. As I showed you in the previous lesson on bond I just made to art boards next to each other in Adobe Photo Shop. Andi. I brought the elements that I draw before from the artistic process to guide me to draw the final Virgin off the Skitch. So as you can see, I brought the Virgin that I liked from Tom PP The better Floyd the Big Bird, the pattern that I created from the floor a motive. Andi, I like to draw guides in order to just make things more proportional. When I draw on and I have the family and sketch also in the next art board to guide me better, the process off sketching is absolutely important because it will makes things easier on you. When you get to Adobe Illustrator starting from e completely plank or toward is something very challenging. So take your time in this phase and do as many sketches as you'd like until you get comfortable with one of them, as you can see because I'm drawing on photo shop. It's easier to like select the shape that I draw on Just reflected because my composition will be symmetrical composition. I will draw some small birds in this tree just to make the tree more interesting. After I am satisfied with the result off the revised Skitch, I will do a final virgin off the skitch just to be sure, off the shape off every element that I have in my illustration. So what I'm going to do is to lower the capacity off the sketch that I did on Bond. I will make another layer. Andi, I will do the final Virgin off my sketch way. Have the final version off our sketch share the final version off your skitch in your project section. In the next lesson, we're going to illustrate our final piece in Adobe Illustrator 10. Final Illustration - Part 1: So now we are going to work on our illustration. In Adobe Illustrator, I will take the final Virgin my sketch from photo Shop and place it into Adobe Illustrator . And as you can see in Illustrator, I made some guides just to make things more proportional. When I draw my illustration and I will go to file menu and place and then I will serve shit for Mari Skitch that I didn't photo shop and place it in Illustrator. And then I'll make sure that it's aligned with the guides. Andi, I will make it a little bit smaller to fit into the art board. I will name the slayers kitsch, and I will lock it so that it won't move when I drawing Adobe Illustrator. I usually use three main tools the pen to the Ark tool for the curved shapes on the shape, too. These are the three main tools that I use for drawing. I will start drawing Tom PP by using the Pento here. I will increase the stroke off some peopie a little bit. I will make it two points after you draw the shape, you can get back to it and do any adjustments that you need by using the direct selection to, and I'm doing some adjustments by adjusting the handles off each anchor point. Now I will draw it on pp's peak, so I will use the shaped loaf or that the store tool exactly. And I will make it like a triangle, and I will remove the excess anchor points by using the minimize panto, and I'm making some adjustments. By using the direct selection tool, you can just click and drag Teoh. Draw the exact shape that you like, and I will press at one point. And as you can see this little circle in Naples, you to make the corner rounded, you can click on the anchor point on them. The little circle next to it will be activated. Andi, you can press on this little circle and drag so that the corner the corner, will be rounded. So I'm happy with this shape, and I will need to reflect it, so I will go to the reflect tool press. Double click on it, and this book's will appear. It will asks you whether you like Teoh reflected horizontally or vertically. I will click horizontally and copy so we will have the peak off the Tom PP. I will just take it and place it on its place. In the illustration, I want to rotate the upper part off the peak so that it will resembles the Skitch. So you choose the rotate Oh, and click on the point where I want the shape to rotate around. I will click, and then I will drag from the other anchor point and I will make the same to the other port off a peak, and I will just three position it. So, as you can see, there is a line that goes through the peak, and I don't like the line. So I'll choose the stroke off Tom PD the path off the main body of the baby, and I will choose the says Er, to just to cut the part that drones through the peak. Just to make it precise, I will lock the peak so that it will not interfere with the scissor tool, and then I will choose the path off to leave his body, the says er to and think like one point on another point so we can then remove the boss in between by the late by clicking the late, and then I will adjust the two ends off the post just to make them attached to the peak. Now I will going to draw the wings, so I will use the pen tool for that. And then I will continue the curvy shapes by the Ark two. Because I see that it gives better results. You can just click on the point where you want to start and them drag. After that, you can adjust the the anchor points by the direct selection toe, and I want to connect them to each other. So I will select both anchor points and go toe object. Pass Andi, then join so that it will become one point. At this point, I just drag it so that it fits with the other, both sameness Here them. I will select all these points by just dragging the mouse. Andi. I aligned them so that they are on the same level. Make sure to choose at a line to selection so that you can align them to each other. You can decrease the numbers off the anchor points in your pulse just to make it more smoother. um, you can do that by going to the object menu path and them simplify, and you can edit all the options in this box like the curve precision, and make sure to activate brave you so that you can see the results. Now I'm going to decorate the wing, so I will use the pen to, and I will make a pause like the one that I did in my skitch press enter to exit the both make the adjustments that you like by the diarist selection tool. I will give this path a different shape. You can play with it as you like, but I like this shape. You can find it in the stroke menu above or in window menu, and I will avenge row multiple pasts from this one just to make it like the sketch that I drove and to make them aligned to each other, I will select a line to selection and then distribute them horizontally. After that, I'm going to choose the bottom points in here. On day, I will align them toe the bottom so that they will be on the same level and then I will choose all of them Andi. I will goto the stroke menu and I will make it dashed line. After this I will make the dash zero and the gap. I will increase it and I will choose the points to be around it and I Then I will increase the gap between them and I will make the stroke a little bit. Figure on guy will choose this shape for it so that you can see that little decoration that we did in here. And after that I will select the whole wing and I will reflect it because it's a symmetrical composition. So I will choose the reflect to Andi. I will click on the guide so that it will be completely proportional. Andi, I will click on drag on at the same time, I will press shift so the shift will make it exactly in the same position. Now I'm going to draw out on pp's tail and I will views for that. The electrical tool I just drag on. And then I will make some adjustments. I will align it to the art board and then I'm going to choose Anchor point tool just to make the point. The anchor points pointed instead off curved. Then I'll select it on and I will choose the rotate to again. I also like the anchor point that I want the shape to rotate around and I will drag and click alter at the same time to duplicate it. And I will make it a little bit smaller and adjust the position of the point so that it's on the original point. Then I will repeat what I did and I will make them fill instead off stroke. I will solve them with black and I would choose the's shapes and reflect them around the central guide, and I choose all thumb and go to the Pathfinders menu and select unite so they will become one shape only Now I will make the decoration often people's body, So I will go to the other art board to make them. We're going to make the floral multi first, so I will just draw a line using the mental click enter to exit the path. I just increase the stroke. Andi changed the shape of the stroke and to draw the leaves, I will use theological too. Andi, I will use the anchor point to toe maketh e anchor point pointy on Die. Reposition it on the line that after or before and I will choose the rodeo too to just rotate it around the slime. I will click and drag on while I click and drug I will press sold to duplicate the shape and after that we can press control the enter placate the shape as many times as we like. I will choose all of them and I will reflect them using the reflect too. I choose the point off reflection to be the both on and I will click and drag empress shift . So now we have already brush to use. I will choose all of them, grouped them and then I will drag them to the brush books. So the pop up menu appear on I will choose Arte Brush so you can change the settings and like experiment with it I choose tense so that I would be able to change the color if I want Empress. Okay, so we have already brush to use Now I will go to BP's body on decorate it I will use the brush to I would choose the brush from the brush books and I will draw. So as you can see, it's no proportional in here. So I will go back to the brush settings on true scale proportionately. You can see it's a lot better. I was just decrease the stroke a little bit, so that's E. I can draw more than one that we are going to make the geometric multi eaves in TEM pp's head, so I would choose the store to to draw a triangle to stabilize it. I would press shift and then I will make another triangle next to it. But I will reflected and to make some variation in the brush, I will make this one filled with black color and the other one just stroke and select them both and I will drag to the brush books. I will make it pattern brush because I wanted to be repeated on and I will unq like the corner and again select tents to be able to cholera it later. Now I'm going to pee pee and I will draw with pen tool appalls. I will select the both and so like the a brush that I made on Guy will decrease the stroke so that there would be a room for more triangles. Now I'm going to draw the crown often BB, by using the electrical tool and make the anchor point at the toe pointed by using the anchor point to. And then I will make some adjustments to the points on each side bike like the down arrow key and selecting them both so that it would become a teardrop shape. Now I will make a copy off this by going to the object menu path and then offset path. So Officer Poth actually enables us to make the same path again. But it would be completely proportional to the original path on DWI can activate the review so we can see if the path is outside or inside. You can choose whatever you'd like. You can decrease the amount of offset here. I like this shape. So I was okay. I will make it fell instead. And I will make another one, so I will goto the object menu. Pause off said path and I will make one smaller press okay. And I will go after that to the stroke milieu toe make it dotted by using the bashed line option and then I will group them and position them as jumpy piece crown. I was just duplicate the two on each side because they are the same shape. Now I'm going to draw the decorative port on Tom. BP's next. So I would use the electrical to Andrew a circle and just like debate. But and I will remove the point so that it became a semi circle. Andi, I will just duplicated to fill the three parts off the decoration here. And as for the circles above theseventies circles, I will use also the elliptical tool. I will make a perfect circle. So I will click shift while I drag on. And after that I will making off Sabah for by the same method. Now I'm going to draw the raindrops so I will use the electricals to for that. And I will follow the same steps that I've showed you before, which when I use the anchor point to toe, make the shape pointy and I will select the points on each side to make it a teardrop shape . And then I will duplicate and reflect in the next lesson we will continue the rest off the illustration 11. Final Illustration - Part 2: in this lesson.
