1. Mindset: hello and welcome to my course about learning German. I would like to start its course off with a quote, our environment, the world in which we live and work is a mirror of our attitudes and expectations. Nightingale. It may be strange to start this course discussing mindset. However, the mindset is crucial not only when it comes to learning languages, but for life in general. As a German national who lived in England for seven years, I can tell you from my own experience that it is easier to learn English as a German speaking national than to learn German. If you come from an English became background, German can be ridiculously long, unnecessarily complicated, and it basically has way too many options for saying the same thing. All these things don't mean that you shouldn't learn German. Though there are plenty of reasons to learn German Germany's economy is still going strong , so you into making money. And let's be honest here, who isn't than being able to speak German can create opportunities for you that you might not have had otherwise. This might give you a competitive advantage. We Germans also love to spend money on holiday on plenty of Germans don't speak English well enough to communicate efficiently. So if you can speak German, it can really make a difference to your business because you can attract German customers that on holiday. And, of course, there's also works on nine Germans also make up the largest heritage group in the U. S. So the German language can benefit you, especially if you're in the US. So what I'm trying to say here is that you have to have the right mindset before you even start to learn the language. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense to even learn a single word or sentence. So how do you get the right mindset? Can you change your mind set if you don't want to learn German? But you may have to. The first question will be answered in the moment, and the answer to the second question is, yes. But it can be tricky. It does depend on age personality on you guessed it mindset. You ideally have to have the right mindset to start with. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense to learn any German, and you will never be successful learning German. Now, what exactly do I mean when I say mindset, I mean inner factors that can influence you in a factors are goals that have nothing to do with education. For example, you might have set yourself the goal to temporarily move to Germany or to understand a certain book or song or film that is available only in the German language. External factors are school potential job or printed ship, in which you might have to be able to speak German as well as parents who might want you to be able to speak German because you chose it as a subject in school. If you are naturally motivated to learn German, you can skip this video and head straight to the next session. However, if you're not motivated, you should definitely keep watching because the next it is very important. So to get into the right mindset, you should festival. Understand why you're in the wrong mindset to begin with, or where the person you're trying to teach German has the wrong mindset attitude. When babies learn their mother tongue, the reason for learning is the desire to communicate. You might think that parents try really hard, teach your Children how to speak But this is rarely the case. Most parents and people in general think that you can teach a small child 2 to 3 languages at the same time. The truth is that they wouldn't have any issues with that because their brains are wired to take a large amounts of information at that h The attitude problem, at least the most cases that I'm familiar with, only starts when you have to learn a new language in school. The reason for this is the fact that learning the language is turning into an obligation. If you want to learn something voluntarily, is often considered fun, you actually enjoy learning, and you can learn whenever you like. As soon as you mentioned the word school, most people start to think about never ending boredom and the obligation that comes with the learning, at least when you don't want to learn in the first place. Most methods used to improve learning, for example, exams do the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do. They d motivate board students and take away any kind of joy that they might have had prior to this, and sometimes that feeling can last for the rest off their lives. At this point, it's important to understand why obligatory learning it's so hard to do and why many students simply don't enjoy it. The reason has been proven by linguist researchers, by the way, and it is simply this obligatory learning doesn't work when it comes to languages, because languages are best learned when the learning process can be controlled by oneself. In other words, it's because of teachers. Now you might hear stories of Children who complain to their parents about their teachers and that they have bad grades because off them, however, most parents simply don't believe their Children. The problem doesn't have to be the teacher, but rather the fact that they have to teach their students. And they do this with completely the wrong tools. For example, schoolbooks, homework and exams. It is very rare that students are looking forward to a certain test or exam. This often results in no enjoying class anymore. This often turns out to be the case for several subjects on can, in certain cases evenly to skipping classes or school entirely. Now everything are set up to this point might seem obvious, but nobody is doing anything about it, and it's often simply ignored. If something both you you will never make the effort to really learn it and stored in your long term memory, the brain only memorizes that which it considers to be interesting and important enough to save. If you're brought straight away will have no interest in learning the language forever. Reason you obviously won't save the information. Instead, you'll forget it as soon as possible. Teenagers, especially get bored very quickly and tend to drift away in their own little world on this usually has nothing to do with the subject that is being taught. For that reason, studying has to be made interesting, or it has to have an important meaning for the student in order for it to be stored in the long term memory. So the following can be done in order to learn German successfully straight from the start . Instead of wasting hours learning dull vocabulary in different tenses, you should seriously start to think about why you want to learn German in the first place, and you need a reason that should mean a lot to you personally. If you come to the conclusion that you don't have a reason because you may have to learn German. Then you should seriously think about which part of the learning process you don't enjoy and how you could benefit from speaking German fluently. In extreme cases, you should consult with your parents or teacher or someone and inform them that you are demotivated and you need help. If you want to learn German as an adult and you still struggle after months and months of learning German, you should ask yourself why it feels so difficult and consider the possibility that you don't really want to learn German in the first place. In my opinion, is far worse to waste years of your life learning German If you didn't enjoy a single second of it, the best way to learn the language if you're de motivational if you have the wrong mindset is too seriously go to Germany or German speaking country, for example, for holidays. Well, maybe as an exchange student, etcetera. This is most effective when you do it by yourself or when one person that accompanies you, who is willing to communicate with you in German. Unfortunately, the vast majority is scared so much of making mistakes that they simply shy away from communicating in a language that they're not too familiar with. However, you learn extremely fast if you are humiliated. In my opinion, a short vacation in Germany that may cost you a small sum off money is worth more than years of education. That may also cost you money. The potential vacation in Germany does assume, however, that you really overcome the fear off failing and you actually going to speak German in certain situations, or at least try to. If the courage is not there but you still have a desire to learn German, then there's always other ways to learn the language easily on free and possibly even with German speaking nationals. You can do this for free and certain websites, for example, simply type into Google, learn German online free and see what comes up to get into the right, Mind said. You should also surround yourself with individuals who are also interested in learning German. If that's possible for you. If you don't know anyone else who was interested in learning German, you could easily find them online or in local language courses. You should now take some time and let all this information sink in, especially because most people never even stop and think about the mind set at all. If you consider studying to be something negative, you would obviously get negative results. Regardless of whether you try to learn German or anything else, The mindset is the basis for success or for failure on. That may surprise some people simply because the subject is rarely discussed. Especially schools. Love to sweep this topic under the carpet because you just have to go to schools, have to learn. That's just the way this. On top of that, teachers often demotivated and have the wrong mindset themselves. For those reasons, it might actually be very uncomfortable to discuss this topic with them. Obviously, not all teachers have this issue. It depends on the school and the teacher and the environment that they teach. However, your own mindset may be changed by following these two steps. Step one. Be grateful you have the opportunity to learn German. I speak from personal experience here, are migrated to England at the age of 18 by myself, and even though I was scared, I haven't looked back since. If I wouldn't have had this mind set off being grateful to get the opportunity to improve my English every day, I would have not been able to start a new life. You never know what benefits learning a new language can bring. So be grateful that you get the opportunity if you grow up with English as your mother. Tongue. German can be very difficult, but it doesn't have to be so. While being grateful is a great first step, it's not enough by itself. You also have to do the following step. Expect a positive result. Once again, this is directly related to the mindset. If you expect to know, enjoy your German lessons, chances are you're not going to enjoy them. I'm not saying that you should lie to yourself. I am saying to consider the possibility and probability that you will master the language after a certain time. The amount of time depends on the mindset on how motivated the individual really is. The more motivated you are, the faster you will learn the language. One of the universal laws is the law off averages, which basically states that if you try something long enough, sooner or later you will succeed. The point is that most people simply don't try to learn German long enough. Even if someone received a bad grade for German in school, it doesn't mean that this person is unable to learn German relatively well within a short period of time. In the future times and people change just because you about it. Something in the past does not mean that you will be bad at it in the future. It may take a long time to change your own mindset, and it definitely takes a lot off willpower. However, willpower is the basis off learning languages and everything else in life. Which is why I dedicated this entire session to mindset. Once you must have the mind set, the next step would be the motivation. And that's what I'm going to talk about in the next session. Okay, this is almost the end of the first session, and I want to give you a quick summary of his first session with key bullet points to remember. German and English actually have many things in common. As soon as learning a language becomes obligatory, it checks all the fun out of it. Obligatory learning doesn't work when it comes to learning languages because languages are best learned. When you can control the learning process yourself, the learning process has to be made interesting. Or you should have an important personal reason to land language so that it can be absorbed by the long term memory. Instead of wasting hours learning recovery and different tenses, you should spend time asking yourself why you want to learn German in the first place. You could have a reason that means a lot to you personally. If you don't have a reason, you should ask itself why you can't bring yourself to learn German and try to think of possible reasons why it could benefit you to learn German. You can try and change your mind set by doing the following two things. Number one. Be grateful for the fact that you were even able to learn German. A number to expect positive results. Will power is the basis for mindset and learning itself. For this reason, that should not be underestimated, and this is the end of the first session. Thank you very much for watching. I'll see in the next session 2. Motivation: our chief warned. In life, it's somebody who shall make us do what we can. That's a quote by Wolf Water MSN. So the first lecture was all about mindset, the importance off mindset and the fact that you can change or create your own mindset. This can be very difficult, however, it's not impossible. So this lecture is all about motivation if you've ever tried to change your mindset, and this shouldn't be too difficult. The difference between motivation and mindset is the fact that mindset is a one off thing and usually stick to it once you've made up your mind. If you try chocolate for the first time and you enjoy the chase, then you have a very positive mindset. When it comes to chocolate, this is only likely to change if you gain weight or develop dental problems, for example, both of these things could happen. However, it might still not be enough reason to change your general mindset about chocolate. The difference of motivation is that it's only temporary. Unless you keep motivating yourself, you will lose interest in learning the German language. Motivation is vital for the following reason. According to scientists, we have about 50,000 Ford's on average per day. Now, on average, four out of five thoughts are negative, and only one thought is positive. Unfortunately, in other words, we have about 40,000 negative thoughts and only 10,000 positive thoughts on average per day , like I said at the average. But I find the numbers shockingly high. So if you transfer this into learning, following may be the case. One. Things are four reasons why it's not possible to learn the German language on only one reason why it is possible at this stage. It should become clear just how important motivation really is. There are several ways to motivate yourself and to stay motivated. Unlike the quote at the beginning, said it would be best if we would have someone who motivates us. However, that's probably not the case. You can do the following to motivate yourself. Set yourself a goal. If you have a clear goal, you don't have the motivation to reach it. My personal goal when I learned the English language was turned us down my favorite American and British bands, this motivated me to not only learn vocabulary that was mandatory at school, but I also learned the lyrics off these songs so you could easily set itself a goal off listening to German speaking music and understanding the lyrics. And I'm not just talking about putting the lyrics into Google. Translate. I'm talking about really learning the lyrics word for word and understand Egx. So let's just say you set yourself a goal. It's not enough to simply set ago. You also have to do the following step. Imagine the goal. So what exactly do I mean? When I said imagine? I mean, you should seriously imagine the goal you've set for yourself, and if it makes you happy, then that's a sign that the gold is right for you. And if you mention it and it doesn't make you feel anything, then you should reconsider. You go. So this then brings me to the next point. Concentration isn't know enough to simply imagining reaching the goal. What you have to understand she is the most important thing is not the imagining part, but the feeling that you get while you actually imagine reaching your go. How does it feel when you're able to speak German fluently if you don't feel anything while you imagine that? And it basically means that you have no real desire to win on the German language or you have no imagination. If this is the case, you have to first work on your mindset. Then on the motivation on the go, you can do the following in order to focus better on your goal, right down you go and your progress. Now, I don't mean having a personal diary, even though you could have a diary. If this helps you, I'm simply talking about writing down your overall go and then write down what you're actually doing in terms of achieving it. The overall goal is obviously learning the German language for whatever reasons, and to reach this goal, you should set yourself several little goals. So, for example, you could set yourself the goal off speaking German, relatively fluent 12 months from now. To be able to reach this goal, you definitely need the right mindset on motivation. The mistake that many people do is they start off with vocabulary straight away that is far too complex, and so they set themselves up for failure straight away. This often results in learning something for a few days, or maybe a few weeks. However, the amount you learn decreases and you eventually give up. Now, if you at least take notes off your progress, you are able to figure out where you stopped on which part of the learning process made you feel de motivated. If you know what happened and how exactly you lost your motivation, you might be able to get it back on. You may be able to come up with steps to prevent it from happening again. It is also much harder to learn German by yourself. Which brings me to the next point. Find like minded people to make the learning process easier. Nobody can motivate themselves 365 days a year there days. We just can't be bothered to do anything. Excuses are always easy to find if you look for them. This is especially the case if you try to learn language as complex as German. If you're part of a group of like minded people who really want to learn the language, there gets easier to stay motivated and to motivate each other. How do you find such a group? You can simply type into Google, learn German online group, or German online group or German Learning Group, and see what comes up. These groups can also be found on social media sites such as Facebook. It also doesn't have to be a group. It could be a single person. People like that can be found on a website called We speak dot com, which is free of charge at the time of making this course. Now I'm not affiliated with this site of also not personally tried it. So I can't say that the quality of these Germans because is all perfect. However, it is free now. If you found a group or person, then you are likely to experience this next point, have fun and enjoy the learning process. If somebody experiences joy or fun learning anything in school, he or she is usually labeled a nerd, but certainly is not cool to admit that you having fun learning something, especially when you're young. Ironically, having fun and enjoying the learning process is absolutely essential for the speed off the actual learning and also for finding the way into the long term memory. If you feel forced to learn German, you obviously won't enjoy at all, and you wish for nothing more than to stop studying German. This is one of the main problems that schools have to deal with now. You can do the following to make the process easier. Reward yourself if you have the right mind set from the start or you manage to change your mindset and you continue to motivate yourself, then it should be rewarded even if you don't enjoy the learning process. But you still have to learn German. For whatever reason, you should definitely reward yourself. The actual reward depends on each individual, but should obviously be something that you like enough so that you continue to study. So let's not say Try everything you can to learn the German language and nothing is working out and you have completely lost your will to continue. In that case, I would suggest to look at the following graphic. Simplifying the learning process like this may seem strange, but the graphic is very effective if it is followed. If you're German, is getting better and better, you have to worry about it. Anything you just continue studying. However, if you get stuck and don't know what to do, you have to basically change something. What exactly it is you should change is uncertain. And the only way to find out is to change as many things as you can. What exactly is that you should change is uncertain. And the only way to find out is to try a number of different things and continue to do so until you found something that works. Often, motivation gets lost because off routine. So it could be the case off simply changing the routine in order to make progress again. As soon as you're back on track, you should not forget to reward yourself. Okay? This is never the end off the second lecture. Here's his summary motivation is essential because on average, we have 50,000 thoughts a day and 40,000 thoughts are negative. You can do the following to motivate yourself. Set yourself a goal. Really? Imagine the goal. Concentrate right. Down you go. And your progress find like minded people to make learning German easier. Try to have fun and enjoy learning German Reward yourself. Okay. This is the end of this session. I'll see in the next session. Thank you very much. For what shape? I'll feed us in 3. Study the way you want to: personally, I'm always ready to learn, although I do not always like being torch a quote by Winston Churchill. So the traditional way of learning a language goes something like this. You learn it either in school or in a language course. You get a workbook to work through, and then you will be tested at the end. And that's it after they test your knowledge by some kind of exam or test. And once you start visiting the school or the language course, no one cares if you continue to learn the language or if you forget everything you learned , you could forget all of it within 24 hours. And I'm not claiming that schools are aware of this. I am saying that schools are in fact aware of it, and they're trying to please all the different learning types. So the current education system has a problem that is not being talked about enough in my personal opinion, and the reason that it isn't being talked about is the fact that it's very hard to do something about this issue. The problem I'm talking about can be summarized in six words. Everyone learns in a different way to clarify this. Let's take a look at the following graphic For fair selection, everybody has to take the same exam. Police climb that tree. And at this stage, a quote by Albert Einstein comes to mind. Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. So what I'm saying here that there's different styles of learning. Therefore, to be exact on what this means is what works for one person might not work at all for another person. This becomes even more obvious when you take a look at the four different styles off learning, auditory learning, visual learning, communicative learning and motor learning. So you can actually have more than one learning style as well. But for now, I'm gonna go into each of his learning styles and explain them a bit so you can find out which learning style you like best. So first up, it's the auditory learner. As the name suggests, this type of learner learns best if he or she can listen to the content that is being taught. I'm not suggesting that this is the only way this learner is able to study, he or she could read something out loud to himself or herself and memorize it very well that way. What this type of learner doesn't like is distracting noises, because these noises will cause the concentration to decrease. Next up, we have the visual learner. Text images and videos are perfect for the visual learner, since he or she obviously prefers anything visual. What this type of Lana doesn't like is telephone course, for example. It also helps the visual Lana to write as much as possible down so he or she can look at it time and time again. This type of loan also likes to use pens to highlight certain words or sentences. Next up is their communicative learner, and as the name suggests, this type of learning, it's a large amount of communication, and so this type of learner might have difficulty studying by him or herself. Also, this type of learner loves to ask questions and then remember the answer and learn it that way. Next, the motor Learner. This type of Loughner is very specific, and it's able to learn best when he or she is studying by him or herself. This type of nana also likes to move while learning in the traditional education system. This type of learner might struggle since usually have to sit still for most of the time. What could help this specific type of learner is if they could build something themselves and memorize it that way. So I hope this helps you in finding out which type of learning style you like best, and this is very important to know. So now you can start to focus on exactly how you would like to learn German. It is, unfortunately, very likely that nobody's ever ask you how, exactly, would like to learn German or anything. For that matter. Traditional education doesn't have much leeway for personal preferences, and that is a huge mistake. In my opinion, there is one method that I consider to be more effective than any other method, which is why I will describe it in great detail right now. And I'm talking about singing. You might not think singing, really? Is he crazy? Is he for real? Now, let me tell you, first of all that, I'm not talking about singing along. British scientists gave 60 native English speakers, a Hungarian sentence to learn, and they're separated them in two groups half off. The group learned the sentence by repeating it, and the other half learned by singing, not singing along, just singing. Now this is where it gets interesting because the result is amazing. The second half off the group, which is the singing half, did twice as well as the other group. And so, for this reason, I'm seriously suggesting to at least try to sing and learn the German language that way. Now you don't have to just sing and do nothing else. Okay, you can obviously try various methods, but at least try singing. But at least give singing ago. Here's a list of alternative methods that you can also try normal school lessons, so depending on your location, you might have German in school. That's a possibility. On depending on your teacher, you might actually have a good experience or a bad experience. Next up is language studies. It is generally assumed by most people that you have to study a language at university level to be able to have a job that includes that language and earn an income and to be truly fluent. In my opinion, this is not the case. If everyone around you is thinking on speaking in German, it just rubs off on you. So he and obviously assuming that you have the courage to go to a new country if you haven't been before and actually try and speak the German language and if you in fact not sure if you would be able to do this, you can consider the following option language trips. The good thing about language trips is the fact that you can see what it's like to live in Germany and speak German. If you are serious about learning German, you might want to visit or lift there someday. So that's what's good about these language trips. What's not so good is the price, because they are usually quite pricey. It would probably cost several $1000 or pounds, which means not everyone would be able to afford it. You should also have a basic knowledge of German. Otherwise, I would not recommend going, so if you can't afford a language trip, there is another option that you can do online language courses. So there are many good websites on AB Stallone German. You can simply type into Google. Learn German online free, or you can look in your APP. Store on your smartphone for ob step. Teach you German for free or where you can speak to native Germans because you can also always try the following option media. So TV magazines, newspapers, etcetera, journal media such as books, for example, can be bored in many stores all around the world. You might even be able to watch German television channels depending on your location. In the beginning, it might feel strange to watch a film or try and read a book in the German language if you're a beginner. But in this case, out recommend maybe a book for Children, for example, which should be far less difficult. Okay, we're nearly at the end of the session. I want to give you a quick summary again. There are four different styles off learners. The auditory learner, the visual Lana, the communicative learner on the motor learner. As soon as you know what type or types of learner you are, you can focus on how to best study German. One very effective way of actually known in German is singing. Believe it or not, they also several different methods of learning. Such s normal school lessons, language studies, language trips, online language courses and media. And that's it for this session. I will see you in the next session. Thank you very much for watching. 4. Michel Thomas: what you understand. You know, on what you know. You don't forget a quote by Michelle Thomas. So anyone who wants to learn anything achieves this best if he or she is motivated has the right mindset. And it obviously helps if you have a teacher who knows what he or she is doing. And so that's the reason why I dedicate this entire video to Michelle Thomas because he was an amazing teacher. If you've never had of Michelle Thomas, I can only recommend you check out the documentary The Language Master. Even though he's teaching students French in his documentary rather than German, it's still fascinating to watch in this documentary. He shows how he's teaching students French and only five days. According to the documentary, The students learn as much in these five days as they would normally learn in five years. This sounds absolutely ridiculous at first, until you actually watch documentary and understand his method, and his method is just incredible. So he starts off by beautifying the classroom, first of all, so he takes out everything off the classroom that's uncomfortable, such as the uncomfortable chairs, the Che boards, the desk and he replaces it with a carpet room, dividers, plants and very comfortable armchairs. According to Michelle Thomas, you only learned properly if you experience no stress at all. And so this states, you can ask yourself if you're watching this video and acquire peaceful environment. And if not, I highly suggest you change your environment. Michelle Thomas also has an amazing basic principle, which I think personally. It should be the main principle of the educational system world wide. Never worry about remembering what you study, as if this wasn't trusting enough. Michelle Thomas even suggestion, or even try to remember what his students learned in his classes, textbooks, notebooks and in fact, writing down anything is not permitted and not necessary in his classes. This is the exact opposite off what the traditional education system uses at the moment, and that's why I think it's so brilliant. In regular schools, you have to, you know, focus, write things down, work your way through textbooks, etcetera. The truth is that many students struggle, and the brilliant thing about Michelle Thomas is that he admits that, but not only that. He also admits that it is hiss responsibility to find out why students are struggling to learn a new language. I have never seen a teacher who took their job more seriously. And so he starts off his first lesson by showing the similarities between French and English. He breaks the language into small pieces, and he chooses pieces that happened to be the same or similar to the English language. And so this way students there on a large amount of information very quickly. But it doesn't appear to them as a large amount of information because it's so familiar. So what I'm trying to say is that you should start learning German the same way. The good thing about the German language is the fact that it has lots in common with the English language. So Michelle Thomas has recorded many language courses, and German is in fact one of them. Now I'm not affiliated with his products, okay, but I would recommend them if you are serious about learning German, and if you agree that his learning method actually works, this is, of course your personal choice.
