1. Super Fast Introduction: no money. First open, illustrator. You're going to get this, um screen. Okay, now you have a lot of things. You have all your file menus up here. You've got your tools over here and you've got a bunch of panels over here. We don't need to learn all of this stuff. I just want to focus on the key things that you need to know in order to stop, start working with Illustrator, we're going to start working with basic things, and then we're gonna build on top of that very quickly. And I want you to understand what illustrator is versus what photo shop is. Okay, because that's really the first question people ask me is Okay. Um what? What? How does illustrator work and what is it used for? Um, I assume you kind of have a basic idea of that, but let's let me go ahead and start by putting the tools panel here, uh, where I usually have it. Now, I don't ever use the tool panel like this just because it's too long. I'll usually click this button and put it in two rows like this, and I'll even drag it in because I've been using illustrator for a very long time. That used to not everything used to not be kind of like, um, but organized like this. It used to be that you just have, like, your palates and things floating around. So I'm more comfortable like that if you can put it however you want to. The So the main things that I use on a very basic level in Illustrator are the tools panel and the layers panel. So let me click over here. This is the layers panel, and it's also got the art board, um, panel attached to that. So here we go. Here's my two favorite guys, and this is just like photo shop in that you work with layers and you work with tools and right here, we're going to have our art board. Okay, So what? In order to just show you how a vector file comes together, I'm just gonna load in a logo that everybody knows the stew. New. No. Sorry. Open. And I'm gonna load in the Starbucks logo now. You'll notice the logos that I have here. I'm gonna give this these to all you guys. They're not for commercial use obviously, but you can play with them. Um, you'll notice that all the logos that I have end with either a i for Adobe Illustrator or E . P. S. Just remember that whenever you're working with a vector file, it needs to be either an A i or an E P s file. Because those are the two main vector files. I mean, there's other vector files. I think pdf's could be vectors, but these are the ones that you want to try to get. If you're working with a client, uh, and you have a logo, you try to get the GPS file or the AI file from them. Um, okay, so here we go. Let's do Starbucks open. And here we go. Now I'm going to click on the space bar to get this little hand and move everything around , okay? And then I'm just gonna delete this guy. Um, I'm going to hit control Plus to zoom in. Okay, So, control Plus, and now I'm going to click on the vector logo. Now you can see that there's this bounding box which is not really important. That's just for scaling. So if I click here and I click shift, which will keep it, um, the same size. It will keep the ratio of height and width together. I could move this around like this, Okay? But that's not the important thing. The important thing that I want you to see are these dots. What are these? Dots? Okay, let's zoom in a little more control plus plus. Plus, every vector file you're gonna work with is going to be created by a series of anchor points. You can see right here. It says anchor. And these curves. Now, these curves are created by Let's see, by these little handles. The angle of the curve is created by these handles. So what we're going to be learning in this, um, in this class is how to create these files how to create a vector file. Now, you don't have to create a circle, you know, by putting together a, um, a series of lines. You know, you don't have to create it all by scratch. You can create a circle like this, You know, just by creating the circle tool, and you'll see that now, if I hit the direct selection tool, you'll see these little dots here Now this. I know this is all a little bit advanced, but this is the core of everything we're gonna be learning is creating shapes through playing around with these handles in these points. So I like Teoh jump in. So you know, you don't have to wait on our before we ever get to that. This is what we're gonna be learning now if it's unclear to you, that's totally fine. If this class is this right here is not making sense to you. We're going to go very slow and figure out how to put this all together. Okay, I just want to I like to start out by showing you something that's like, kind of the key thing here, The core thing that we're gonna be learning now there's a lot more complicated things that you can do. You can do shapes inside of shapes, inside of shapes. You can do all sorts of effects and you know there's tons of things that you can do with illustrator. But at the very core of illustrator is the creation of wines. Let me share with the pinto lines curves that are created by anchor points. And that's how all victors come together. So we're gonna go ahead and get started with the basics. And then, um, I'm gonna try to get you up to speed as quick as possible. All right? So I'll see in the next class. 2. Understanding Nesting and Grouping: moving on straight from their last. The last class. Um, let's go up and I want to show you file. Um, you're gonna notice something in a second. Okay, we have these tabs up here at the top. As you add different documents, you're going to get more and more tabs up here. So let's open up open a, um I'm gonna open up another one called content. E P s open. Okay. And this is a bunch of different vector files. OK? So if you look up here, you can see that I can also click over here and go back to this file so you can just go back and forth from different files up here. Okay? Now I'm going to click on the space bar again and move around. Um, so one of the things I want to show you that a lot of classes wait until you get into the advanced sections with on, and I think it's absolutely essential before we start learning how to create shapes and everything. I want you to understand the concept of grouping and nesting because that's absolutely essential to understanding how illustrator works. And this is something that's completely different than photo shop. In fact, I'm going to stop talking about Photoshopped. Let's go to this typewriter. Okay? I'm going to zoom in and, um, control plus plus. And let's look at this guy. Okay? This is a very complicated vector file, okay? There's a lot going on here. They're circles, you know? You can see all these little elements here. Um, but when I click on this, it all moves together. So all of these different things Air Group together. Okay, um, let's go back a little bit. If I click on this guy the little tie deal that will move together, this will click together. And that's because all of these things are grouped into little groups. Now, in order to see that, we can go over to the layers panel here, and I want to do something real quick. The layers panel only go down to panel options and make these large just so it's easier to see. And we have, um I'm gonna click on this little triangle, and you're going to see all of the different squares here. All the different vector files. Okay. And if you go a layer deeper click here, you're going to see the elements that make up those layers. And it's one thing inside another thing inside another thing. So you group things together in order to build things up. Okay, so let's look at this typewriter. The way that you get into that group is if I click on this and I'm going to double click on it fast, okay? And it's gonna bring us into what's called isolation mode. So I'm going to click on this guy, double click, and now you're going to see everything around. It becomes white it out, and we're just looking at this guy. And on the Layers panel, it's just this guy now, okay? And this makes things extraordinarily easy toe work with an illustrator. And that's how you can create all of these really complicated shapes because you're doing one thing inside of one group inside of another group inside of another group. For So for example, Um, let's zoom in again. Control plus plus plus, Now, within this we have, let's look at the layers. Now we have the background layer and the, um, the typewriter so we can click on the background. Move that, or we can click on the typewriter and move that around. Okay, Now I'm going to click on the typewriter and let's see what happens over in the layers panel, Click, click. Now we've just got the typewriter and let's look down at that. And now you're going to see all of these different areas. Now, these air together, this is together all the keys, air together, and you just find one thing with in all the papers together. So, this paper, if I double click on that, we're gonna have the paper here. Just the paint. You can't really see it. Um, now, T get out of that. You just double click off of it. So I'm gonna double click off of it. And now we're back in the main typewriter. I'm just hitting the space bar. Whenever I want to move this. Let's look at the keys. Because this will probably be the easiest way to look at this keys. Now that even the key. Okay, so let's double click on the keys. Double click. There we go. And now we've just got this stuff here and double click again. So what you see is it's you've got graphics inside of graphics inside of graphics. And that is the way that you start building things together. Okay, um and we're going to cover that in more detail later. But this this to me is something that's absolutely essential in understanding. Illustrator. And I wanted to show you that up front so that once we get start getting into things, you have that in mind and understand why I'm grouping things together. Okay? No, it's like a these little the word hammers. There we go. You can take that up. Okay, We can click on that. And now you just see what that's made of. You see all the little lines that make up those things. Let's click on the I. So they disappear. See? So you start really building these objects by creating elements that are part of it and then start putting them together. Okay, we got that. So, um all right, so let's move on to the next class. 3. Shapes: The Basics: okay. This is a basic introduction to creating shapes. Now, the most common thing you're going to do in illustrator is just create shapes, logos or shapes. Um, fonts are basically shapes. I mean, all of these different things. There are ways of creating shapes. OK, so let's go into some of the basic ways to create shapes over here on the, um, the tool panel, the 1st 1 in the most basic one is going to be the Shapes panel. Okay, so right here, let's click on the circle and you're going to see the rectangle tool, rounded rectangle, tool, ellipse, polygon, star, tool and flair Tool the flare till I have literally never used. So I'm not going to go into that. Um, now, these tools air, you're basically I mean, you kind of already know what the's do. Okay, so I click the rectangle tool. Whatever color is here is going to be the color that it creates. So let's click that and we can create a rectangle. Okay, Now, if I hold it and dragged down like I'm doing, you can create whatever rectangle you want. If you hold down the shift key, you're going to get a perfect square. Okay, so here is our rectangle. Okay, I'm gonna move that over here. Same thing with rounded rectangle is just a rectangle that has rounded angles. So if I just click once, it'll give you these options as to how you want to create the not only the size of the rectangle, but how much you want to curve the, um, the corners. Okay, so let's click. Ok? And there we go. Or we can just do the same thing here. Um, I can just click and drag this out like that. Okay. Very simple. And on any of these tools, if you just grab them like the rectangle too. If you just click it like this click, you can create the rectangle just by putting what? How big you want the side. So let's do 200 by 200 pixels to what we get terrier. Okay. And if I want to change the color, whatever is selected when you go over here to change the color is what will change. So I can change this to kind of a red color. I can select Thies too, and both change them to a green color which it did not dio see green color. Here we go. Um all right, let's move on circle. This is all kind of. I mean, I don't think it's really all that exciting once we get to the polygon tool. Now, the polygon tool is cool because you can choose how many point you how many corners you wanted it. So if I would just want to I'm gonna drag it like it is now. And I've got a, um What is that? Five sides. 123456 sides. Okay, So what is that SEPTA gone? Um, I'm not gonna make an idiot out of myself. But if I click on this and I just click once I can decide how many sides that I want. So if I just want to try and go like and go down to three, the least you could do is three. So Okay, okay. And there's a triangle. Or if I want, as I'm dragging it, I can hit the up key, and I can just keep on adding or I can go down the down keys and I can create as many um, besides I want Okay, So let me delete all those and the star Tool. You know, it's kind of the same thing. I can drag that out and I've got a star I could hit up, and I'm going to get more of these guys it down. I don't use this one a whole lot. To be honest, delete that you can, also with the star tool. Um, as you drag it out, you can hit the, um I'm hitting the key. Let me see. You can you know, I'm hitting the, um, the control key, and you can as you're dragging it out, you can just make the little sprite the little things as you drag it out. I'm just holding down the, um, the control key. And that's what allows you to do that. Okay. And this could be fun for little backgrounds. Let me. I'm just cooking these delete. And you know, if you want to do a bunch like in the background somewhere, this kind of gives you that sixties look, so that's kind of cool. Now, over here, let's check out a few more things. Everything here that when you create something, there's nothing that's going to be a raster file it's all gonna be vector. So if I take the, um, pencil tool and you can see up here the different brushes, Okay, we take the pencil tool and there we go. I'm just drawing with that one thing that's good to know. Um and you could make a shape. Let me do control Z control Z. I'm going to make a close shape, so I'm going to draw a circle. And then as I get to the very edge here, I'm gonna hit the bulky. And now we've created a shape. We could move that around. We can change the color. You'll notice something over here that I'm gonna talk about later. Um, the color of the line is green. If I want to make the color that that means that stroke is green. And over here, it shows you what your stroke color is. If you want to change the fill degree and you just click this backwards and you're gonna have the Phil Green and you can also have the stroke be, you know, another color if you want, and you've got. Now you've got this stroke is blue. There's a stroke and the Phil and we're gonna talk about that later when we talk about colors. But I just wanted to mission that. Okay, so that is the pencil tool. One thing that I use a lot when I use the pencil tool because I only work with a mouse. A lot of people work with stylists. Um um, the tablets is I double click on this, and I put the fidelity, and this smoothness put the smoothness at 100 which means that it's going to smooth out what you're drawing, and I bring the fidelity down as low as possible. So it's 0.5. Okay, So that basically means that when I'm drawing, it's going to smooth it out for me. See that? Let's change the stroked to, like, five. Here we go. Now, the brush is also a very cool tool to play with. Um and you could do the same thing with the fidelity here, you know? Let's just I'm gonna show you what it looks like when the smoothness is down. So I'm gonna drag this like that, and you see, Well, it actually did smooth it. Fidelity. Smoothness may see gonna go like that. I want to just smoothing it out for me anyway. What's being nice now? The cool thing about brushes is that you can, um, use different kinds of brushes. You know, you can use artistic brushes, So if this is selected, I can go up here to the brushes, and there's also an option over on this side. There's a palate you can get down. But just for the sake of right now, um, let's say I want to change this and make it more of a like an actual brush. So I'm gonna click on this guy, and now you can see this is a cool brush. So, Aiken, you know, I can take this and re, um, move some of the anchor points click off here Could move the anchor points. And our brush is going to change my stun where we change our anchor points and we can change the, um, on this guy. We could change the strokes. We could make that smaller and let me show you something real quick. I'm gonna touch on this again when we do strokes. But you can also change how wide everything is. So if I click on this guy over here, the with tool you can stretch out different parts of this, make it smaller, and you can decide how big or small the the stroke is. Okay, so there's a stroke If I want to convert this stroke to an actual shape, which means that all of these things will, you know, this is just the stroke. But if I want to convert it to an actual object, I can go up and I do this all the time. Um, I go up to object, expand appearance, and now this whole thing is a big vector object, and I can change. You know, the shapes. You'll notice the Phil has changed over here. This is a little more advanced, but I just want to kind of jump into it early so that when we see it later, you'll have seen it already. Okay, so I converted a stroke that has an effect on it into an actual object. OK, but anyway, that's advanced. So I'm not going to stay on that now. Our other ways of doing things are the pin tool. We're gonna talk about the pin till next, so I'm not going to go into that, and that's really it. I mean the other things we're gonna talk about is how to take, you know, shapes and combine them to make you know, uh, more complicated shapes. And there's also another tool that if you bring in a ah line drawing or an illustration or something, you can actually trace that and create a shape out of the trace. But we're not going to go into that yet. That's going to be in a future class, so that's it for creating basic shapes. 4. The Pen Tool: all right. It's a little like pulling a tooth. You just want to do it all at once. Um, let's just do the let's learn the pin tool. Okay? I want you guys to be the masters of the pin Tool, um, and not be afraid of it, because the pencils I've had a love hate relationship with the Pinto, This guy right here for many, many years because it's a lot of people have problems with it. It's a little bit unpredictable, but it is the key building block, one of the key building blocks to making shapes. OK, so let's just get into it, All right, Um, for the most part, I've been using these two guys appear the direct selection tool and just the selection tool . So those two are A and V. Okay, so let's click on the Nike logo here. You can see as we talked about before. As you click on each of these anchor points, you will see that there are these handles, okay, and what the's handles air doing is creating the curve of the line that goes from one anchor point to another anchor point. So here's an anchor point here Here's an anchor point here. We can change this angle here by moving these anchor points can move this click on this anchor point, we can move this and change it a little bit more. Okay, so let's let's mess. I'm gonna do control Z. And now we're back. Okay, Now, I just want to go give you a quick introduction to the pin tool. It's actually fairly simple to understand. Um, so let's just go through it. I'm gonna create a new layer just to be safe. Um, and I'm gonna click up here. I'm gonna click three times and make a triangle of the most basic of shapes. So here we go. 123 and you'll notice at the bottom, there's a little circle on the pin tool. There's a little circle there, which means we're gonna close this shape. Um, the concept of clothes shape is important, because once this is closed, like now, now it is an official shape. It doesn't. You know, even though you could see the fill, it looked like a triangle. Now it is an official shape. We can go down here to these two guys right here. I haven't really talked about them yet, But this is the Phil over here in the tools, and this is the stroke. Now, what is a stroke? A stroke is if you just want to see this as an outline, and we're gonna cover this all later strokes and fills. I'm going to hit this little switcheroo button right here. And now we see just the stroke. Okay? This is the just the lines. And we can have both of these if we want. You know, if you wanna have the stroke, be one color weaken, double click on the Phil and make it like a blue. There you go. Um, but that's not really what we're talking about now. OK, so that's, um, simple strokes and fills, but, uh, we're talking about the pinto. Let's get back to the mental. What we doing? All right. The pinto and I'm just gonna leave the colors the way they were because it doesn't really matter. Now If you click and drag on the anchor point like so and then do another point, click and drag. You see that cool line that is making that curve that it's making Now let's draw another one. We're gonna do another point down here. You can see the line here, the curve that it creates. And now we're gonna go back up here and you'll see that circle again on the pin tool and click on that and drag that too. And you can see how you can get into some trouble here with, you know, crossing over lines and everything. So now clicking on the direct selection tool, we can click on these anchor points and move things around as we want them see. Or we can change how the curves work between the anchor points by moving these handles and you can move them in and out and you can make them work individually. Um, be careful with moving one side of the, um these air called busy handles. Be careful with moving one without the other because then you start getting ugly, uh, little changes where the anchor points is. As long as you kind of have a straight anchor point, you're going to have a nice curve. OK, so you see that here we go anyway, you get the point with that, Hopefully now let's just get rid of that, and we're going to attempt to make the Nike logo. Okay, so one of the first things that I want to dio since I don't want to select the actual logo I just want to trace on top of it is I want to click on the logo layer and put a lock key on it. Okay, so now I can't touch that. And I can only work on this layer above it. All right, So let's go ahead and start. This isn't gonna be perfect. It takes you no time to be perfect. But I just want to give you an idea how you can create one of the most basic logos that there is. So I'm going to click on here, click on it, and I don't have to drag, but I'm going to. If you don't drag, it'll just be, you know, you can combine. Uh, let's say, for example, you have one, um, anchor point that doesn't have any handles on it. And then combine that with the ankle anger, Uh, one with a curve, so I can, you know, do that. And this doesn't actually have any busy handles on it. This is just a anchor point. So I could do that to up that makes sense. Um, like that again. Delete this guy if you want to delete it. You just dragged to the trash. Here we go, Right. We're doing this live. So I'm not editing it. Here we go. OK, so I'm gonna click on here, and I'm gonna just go ahead and drag that just cause I want to I'm gonna click here. Drag that click here, drink that out. Click here, click here and you can see this looks terrible. I'm going to go back and edit this all out and click here and you can see that circles there. And I've finished up my shape. And if you delete Thea, if you turn off the little eyeball, you can see my shape versus the actual shape. Now, one thing that I like to do is I like to differentiate what I'm working with, um, from the background. So since these are the same colors, I'm going to select this and I'm gonna change it to a different shape. So I'm gonna make this, like, you know, kind of a nice light blue. And also, you'll notice up here at the top. You start getting all these options. Whenever you click on different things, you get different options here. Um, well, that's not a great example. When you select different things or whatever you get, different options appear in. One of the things I can do appear is take the A. Pass it down to, like, 50% so I can see through it. Okay? And you probably would have been better to do that from the beginning anyway. So let's get on the selection tools here and let's start messing with the handles. Okay, I'm going to zoom in a little bit control plus plus plus, and let's start playing around with this shape. And like I said, I'm not going to get it perfect. But let's get it pretty close. This guy here, I'm not sure if the actual Nike logo has a curve here. That it was a direct point, which slips could be a little tricky. Getting the right just the right place you need to zoom in and the amount. Okay, let's take this and you know what I'm gonna do? I'm going to In order to make these operate independently, I'm going to click on Ault and click this guy and drag him around. So these two guys air now? These too busy a handles are now operating independently. Now let's move this guy over here. Strike this around a little bit. That well, this out a little bit. There we go, and we're pretty close. We're not perfect, but we're pretty close with this. A little more. And yet, you know, a lot of working with the The Pinto was just, like, little tiny tweaks. Okay, so let's get rid of the Nike logo, and I'm gonna hit control minus minus minus. And I think that's a pretty convincing Nike logo. 5. The Text Tool: Now the textile is pretty easy to learn. Um, all you have to do is click on the text tool and then you can eat. There's two ways to use the textile. You could just click here and leave it, and you can just, you know, have that text there. Or you can create a text box and you do that by, um, clicking and then dragging. So I'm dragging here and I'm going to put hello and the nice thing about text boxes. I always recommend doing text boxes because they're a lot more a lot easier to work with so I can put that hello to the right or two left or center it and I could move the text box around. I can put that over here and you'll notice that Hello doesn't change the size of hello. Doesn't change if I select on this guy and I move it the size of hello changes. Okay, um, you can also type along a path, So if you have, let's say, for example, let's do a circle. I'm just gonna make this a stroke, so there's no film, and I'm going to click on type on a path tool. Then you can, um, click your your, uh, the type tool onto a circle. And then do you can start typing on that path? It takes a little time to get comfortable with this now that once you have it on that path , you can take this little wine here and move it around on the outside. Or if you drag it down, you can move it into the center here. And you can do that for any path. So you could do like that. Um, Or let's say you just want to create your own path. I'm gonna just make a line like this. I'm gonna get rid of the Phil that I'm gonna click on here. So and this is centered, so I'm gonna actually do it right. Justified. Hello, and welcome to Illustrator Detour. It's hard to talk and type. Um, and again, if I want to move this, I could I confined this little guy and move them along the path. See, there we go. Actually, here is the beginning. So click on that. We could move him, see how it goes along the path like that so you could do something like this and that actually looks pretty cool. And you know, the for the most part. I just see people doing text like on an incline, so they'll be like, Well, that's a good example, but you get what I'm saying. So that's basic types type tool stuff. There's also a number of other things that you can do that arm or kind of like in design. For example, if you've got a box of text, let's say Okay, I'm gonna go in and could A warm Lauren to dot com has dummy text that you can use. So let's say I've got this dummy text Florham ipsum text If you will copy and let me go, Um, if I want to put this in, I'm just gonna put this at 12 and regular and paste it. Now we've got a lot of this text here, and it's working fine, but at the bottom you'll notice you have this little square, which means that there's more text down here, and if I drag and pull this down, you can see all this text that didn't fit into the box. Um, so one thing that I could do if I'm creating a, um a brochure or something that's got text that needs to continue. I can put another text box say over here, and I'm going to click on the selection tool. And I'm gonna grab this little red square and drag it Well, see, there we go. And I'm gonna I'm just gonna click on that, and I'm going to drag it over to the other text box. And now these two text box two text boxes are linked. And I can move this text box anywhere I want, as long as you see this little line going between them again. This is something you have to practice a little bit. Um, you know, watch. For example, if I Let's do a test, I'm going to copy. This helps its copy. Great. Just made a new textbooks there. Let's copy. Here. Copy it. And I'm gonna paste it right here, and you'll see what happens on this side. Control V. Okay. See, now you see how this went down here and continued here, and that's something that you see in in design. It's a pretty cool feature. And in design, um, so you can just start typing or whatever, but anyway, so that's a basic introduction to the text tool. And, well, there's some or graphic based stuff that I think is interesting. You know, Let me let me do one more quick thing now that I'm thinking about it if you want. You know, fonts aren't just letters and numbers. Sometimes fonts can be, um, widgets. And they could be pictures and things like that. So let's do this. I'm gonna put hello Or actually let me just put Illustrator and I'm gonna make it. Um, I just click that I just did one click so I can change the size of it. Now, I'm actually gonna make this a little more bold like it's a logo. Now let's say that you're making a logo, and part of that logo is the letters, and you need for this to be not a fun anymore, But you need it to actually be a shape. One thing that I do a lot is I will go up to type and dio do create outlines and when you hit, create outlines. Now, this is a vector shape, OK? And this is a very good thing to do if you are working with a e. P s file or an AI filed, and the person that you're sending it to doesn't have illustrator. Maybe they're importing it directly into photo shop. So now I have this and I can change, You know, the color on it. Um, I can put a stroke. There were no lips. I didn't put the see what happened there. I put a stroke on nothing because it wasn't selected and we could make the stroke bigger. There we go. And that's the way that I use illustrator a lot, you know, And then you can actually go in and let's let's take this up a notch. Let's just pretend like we want to take a trip. Trim off a little bit of this top here, so I'm going to, um, just draw a circle. Oops, that wasn't good. Un. Select that, and I'm going to draw a circle in the circle. I don't really want to have this. And let's let's try what we learned before the, uh, the shape builder tool. Let's copy these two. Now Let's go the shape builder tool and let's minus that circle part. Does that work now? We've got all these areas here. Clips controls it. Negative click. Negative. Click. Negative. That's pretty cool, huh? I mean, makes it a little hard to read now, but it gives you an idea of what you can do. We still get those texts paths in there. Get rid of that. Thanks. Piece. So that gives you an idea of the ways that you can combine tools. Now, it's like that. I got to say the shape builders is really one of the best adjustments best additions they've ever made to illustrator. Okay, there we go. There we go. Now, this doesn't work perfectly. However, you can see how this would allow you to build some cool logos. You know, like taking a little bit of little shapes out and things like that. Okay, so that is text for now, and we'll move on to the next class. Thanks. 6. The Shape Builder Tool: in this lesson, I'm going to teach you how to save Aton of time. Now, one of the things that I talked about before was how illustrator has a lot of tools. You know, it's just like photo shop. It's had tools that it Ted, since the very first days, and they don't get rid of anything. Um, so you've got a lot of tools that are kind of defunct now, and let me talk about one real quick that, you know, longer need to use. Um, used to be, Let's say, for example, you're working on a logo and you want to create Let's say, for example, I'm just gonna pick this the, um, circle tool, the Ellipse tool, whatever you wanna call it, and I'm gonna draw a circle. Okay, so here we are. Here's a circle. As I draw that, I'm hitting the shift key. So it'll keep the sides proportional, uh, or proportionate. Whatever word you want to use, here we go. Here's a circle, and I'm gonna hit Ault and then drag to the right. And as I'm dragging, I'm gonna hit the shift key to keep it on the straight line. There we go. And now I've got two circles and let's say for whatever reason, actually going to change the color on this. So let me select that. Change the color. Okay, so we have two circles, and for whatever reason, we're trying to create a shape that has this shape taken out of this shape. Okay, so we wanna have, uh I'm gonna move this over a little bit. We need to create a shape that is basically what you see here. Let's make this white for a second. That's the shape we want to create for whatever reason. Um, now, in order to make that shape, we still have our circle here. Ah, What? Actually, it's funny cause you can always tell new designers because they'll just leave it like that and they'll be like, Oh, well, there's the new shape. It's like, No, that's not a new shape. That's a shape with a shape drawn on top of it. And it's really easy to create the the rial shape here. Okay, the shape that you want, what you used to dio is go up to the windows and you would go to Pathfinder and you get this little box here you get this little, um, option, and you could choose how you want one layer to interact with another layer. So, um, let me just change the color here so we can see we have to Solids. What's going on? Why is that working? I see. I mean, that's very weird. Why? Uh, there we go. Ok, um, you see, we're doing this live. All right, So how do we take this layer out of this layer? Basically take a bite out of it. Now, we have a lot of different options with the Pathfinder to let's select this and you can. You know, I'm only going to tell you what the's top ones are. These bottom ones. I'm not going to go into that because I literally have never used them. And since I'm showing you that the whole Pathfinder tool is obsolete, that there's no real reason to go into it. So let's select these two. And let's say for whatever reason, we want to take this front out of you know, this shaped IQ minus one shape out of the other. We can click over on what's called minus front, and I'm gonna click minus front and Now we have a new shape based upon the combination of this layers taking out basically this top layer from the bottom layer and we get this kind of half moon ship. Well, you know, let's say we're making a moon. There we go. We've made a moon. Now I'm gonna do control Z and show you what the other options are. Okay, let's say for whatever reason, again we want to combine the two images. Let's say, for example, we're making like a snow man. Okay, so let's put this on top of this and we're going to go up to the Align tool and make sure that these air both on the same line the ally until I think if you look up here, it kind of speaks for itself. So let's align thes two layers, one on top of each other. Who? There we go. And now let's combine the two images. You would go up to the align toe the Pathfinder tool and you would click unite. And now both of these images are together. When you click the color, it all changes and you can see over here This is one big shape. Now, now Let's do control Z control Z and there we go to shapes again. Now let's say we wanted to create a little leaf shape by combining these two images by just combining where the two images touch. So basically, right here, let's how do we create just this shape? So we take both of them and we would do the inter sectoral, So it's just going to create a shape where these two guys intersect. And there we go. Now, we've got a new shape over here. You can see we've got a new shape. And once again, what if we want to only have where the, um, images aren't touching. So we would do the exclude and click on that. And now we get this shape, and this is pretty cool. I use this a lot for kind of abstract logos. Okay, so but why are we spending all this time with the Pathfinder tool if it's obsolete? Well, I just wanted to give you an idea of how things used to be done, so you'll appreciate how things are done now. Okay, so let's get rid of the Pathfinder tool, and we're gonna move over to the shape builder tool. Now, the shape builder tool is a very quick way to do all the things that you just saw. Okay? And this came later. I didn't use this up until recently. Um, so the shape builder tool is just a very quick way to either combined shapes or not shapes out of each other or do exactly what we just did, but just to do it on the fly. Okay, so I'm gonna select these two guys again, and I'm going to go over to the shape builder tool and click on it. Now, one thing I want you to remember all the shapes that you want to effect with shape, builder, tool. Need to be selected when you do this. Okay, so let's go over to the shape builder tool. I'm gonna click on that, And as I go over the shape, you're going to see that a little pattern comes out. Okay? You see that pattern? Whenever I go over something now, whatever part of this shape I want to, you know, disappear or I want to get rid of. All I have to do is click Ault. And now I can click on this part and it disappears. You see how easy that is? Now, let's do this. I'm gonna do control Z and put it back in. Now, if I want to, I'm gonna do that again. I'm gonna hit um, negative on both of these parts, and we're gonna accomplish the same thing we did before. Let's let's put it back the way I'm gonna rotate this around. You know, if you see the you can see how my little arrow changes on the bottom. Watch how it changes that. Go around. This is pretty basic. But you see how that changes now, Not hit shift. Do do and put this over here. Okay? I'm gonna click on my circle, make it small again, bring it on top and I'm gonna make my moon shape again. How do I make my moon shape? Well, I'm going to click on both of these guys. I'm gonna go to the shape builder, tool, and I'm gonna hit Ault to make the little negative appear by the pointer. So negative and negative. And there we go. We have our moon again. Okay. See how easy that is? It's much easier than using a Pathfinder. Of course, You can still use the Pathfinder if you like it, But I really think that you'll find the shape builder tool to work better. All right, that's it for this lesson. Thanks. 7. Building the Twitter Logo: Now let's put the shape, builder, tool toe action into action. Okay, Um, here we have probably one of the most famous logos right now, the Twitter logo. And I want you to look at this logo and kind of how it's put together. It looks like a lot of kind of circles and cut out lines and everything. And it's not that every logo is done like this, But certainly a lot of the logos that you see nowadays are created by taking circles like we have here and combining them together in creating a series of shapes that you will use to create an image. Okay, And so let me show you a few more examples of that. If you go on Pinteresque. Actually, I have a Pinteresque page that I'll put in the notes, and it's going to have a lot of these different logos. But soon, in a little bit. Here's just a picture I found on its on my logo page, creating this shark with the Siris of different circles and cutting lines out and adding lines in. So we're gonna we're gonna do this real quick. Here's another logo that's created purely by combining circles taking, you know, the wing comes out of taking the part where these thes two circles overlap. This part is created by creating a circle here. Um, and it's a really nice way to work on logo design. And you come up with some amazing logos like this. This shape of the squirrel was created by, you know, a combination of circles and overlapping and deciding which ones they wanted to keep. And this cool bear here. I love this logo. Another Siris of just shapes that were combined, um, you know, overlapped and created through, You know, the same thing that created this Twitter logo. Okay, so let me just go through this real quick and show you how you would create something like this in photo shop. The first thing that I'm going to do is lock this layer, so I'm not touching it anymore. Okay, so I'm gonna click on the layer right here and lock it and the rest of the layers air turned off, so they're not gonna have any problems. Um, you can also Lockett right here. Okay, so I'm gonna lock that now. I can't touch it, and I'm gonna start with let's say I'm not gonna do the whole thing, but I'll give you an idea of how I would do this if if somebody wanted me to create something like this. Now, the first thing I want you to understand is you're not obviously not gonna be starting with the logo and tracing on top of the logo. The best way to create a logo is to start with a notebook and start doing sketches and just do one after another after another and just come up with different ideas and get everything down on the paper. You know, all the ideas that come even, you know, dumb ideas that you think will become nothing, you know, work, work on tons of different sketches. And eventually you'll come up with something very, very simple. Maybe you can, and then after you get on, illustrator, you can keep, you know, changing stuff, But you want to have some idea before you get started. So let's play with this. I'm going to do this in a different color. And up here there's the option to change the opacity. Now, the opacity is how much you see of a layer. So, um, the a pastie right now. Is that 100? So you'll see 100% of the object if I put the opacity at 40. Sorry. Here we go. So now I can see through it, and I can kind of see through to the bird here. Okay, I'm going to zoom in, so I'm gonna hit control plus plus plus, And let's just try to kind of match this object by, you know, creating different circles. And I'm gonna just delete that. And as I hold this, I'm gonna hold the shift down so I get a perfect circle. So here is this part that's pretty good. And as I'm doing this, remember what we did with the Nike logo. So it's just a different technique. Move that. Okay, now I'm going to put on the lock for that, and I'm going to create this part of the beak, so let's just create an angle for that. I guess it's a little smaller, and I'm just remember, I'm just holding the shift key while I do this. It's not gonna be perfect. So it's just did in there like that. Okay, we get this guy and I'm going to bring the A. Pass it down to 50%. And now I'm gonna hit control minus to get a little bit bigger view. I'm gonna make a larger circle for the top. See, It's pretty good. Okay, Now, if in a larger circle for the top, bring new capacity down on that. And so what can we do? We can go weaken, create ah, shape out of the combination of these two shapes. So basically it it'll be this shape right here. You're not gonna have to. You don't have to worry about all this stuff that's on top of the circle. Okay, so let's just click this guy. These two guys, okay? Those two are selected. Now, I'm gonna go over to the shape builder, tool, and I'm just gonna click on Ault and click on this circle and this circle and what we have left. We have this shape here. Now, let's put this back to 100%. Okay, there we go. Our first little area. Now I'm gonna unlock these guys. Hips are unlocked. Logo. I'm going to select these two, and now I'm going to go to the shape selector tool again, and I'm gonna hit Plus, I'm sorry. I'm just gonna drag down into the other one. And it should combine those two layers. There we go. No, I see I didn't combined weight once. I could let me see. Plus plus. Plus, there we go. Ok, now it's combined those two layers. Now, if we want to go down, we can come. But we can do this guy, this layer. So let's go ahead and add another layer to draw on to get this guy draw another circle, and you're always gonna work. What won't work with circles if you're trying to go for this style? Because it just gives it the right look, you don't want to do like, you don't wanna create a circle like this and just kind of barely get it in there. You know, like that you want to create a perfect circle and do everything with perfect circles. Okay, do that 50. And let's do another one on top of that guy, and this one looks a little more flat. There we go with that done 50 and let's picked this shape. Okay, so we're gonna select these two circles, and once again, we're going to go to the shape selector tool and we're going to hit Ault. Negative takes a second negative, and we have the perfect mouth. Oh, but what? We have a little problem here. What? This guy is sticking out over here. OK, well, it's not a big deal. All we have to do is we can go back to weaken. Select this and this circle. Let's turn that this guy and this guy So we'll put him in the circle in the same, um, selection. Hit the shape selector tool, and we'll just delete that. There we go. And make sure that this is 100%. Okay, Now we can just select this whole thing and hit shape selected. What's what's this? The shift in. Okay, So if we hit shift in M, we're gonna get this shape selector tool. So let's just drag this over here. Make that into one big thing. Here we go. What now? That's one big shape. Now we can keep going with this. We can make you know we can not make one wing real quick or I can let me do the rest of this big part of the body. We can take this. Oh, there we go. Take this, big Bert and turn that down to 50. And actually, you know we can do that will make it faster as well. Just do a copy of this shape, so I'm just gonna hit all and drag, and then I'll drag it over here, and I'm not going to do this one. Perfect. Okay, so I'm just gonna click these two. Who's these two? Hit the shape. Weaken. Do shape. Shift in. There we go. Okay, I'm gonna hit negative for that shape. Could take just a second Negative for this shape. And now we're going to combine it with this guy over here. Um, could be a little bit worrisome right there. But like I said that we're doing this fast, so I'm not gonna worry too much about it. It's gonna be perfect. Okay, Now it's select these two guys. Let's put this up to 100 again. There. Go 100. So, like those two and let's just delete this guy here, all right? An absolute selected again. And we're going to combine these two shapes, so it's just drag this through here like this. Drag that. OK, there we go. See, I mean, it's ridiculously simple, and we could just make these the same way. So anyway, I just We got were at 11 minutes, so I gotta hurry up with this stuff, but that just shows you a real quick way. Let's let's get rid of that. Okay, Now we've got the beginnings for our Twitter logo, and you can see how things start coming together just by building shape on to shape, on to shape. And then, you know, once you get stuff like this, you can let's say, for example, you want to put this is a white background or white cut out in a different color background . So let's create a square, and I'm gonna make this kind of the same color as the the Twitter. So it looks right. Then let's put this on top of that. And you know what? It's always good to just make a copy of things. So I'm going toe all click that and drag it over here. So we have our original right here. Um, okay. And I'm going to show you something that you can do real quick over here. You can just bump this on top on the layers So this is on top or you conduce. Go arrange. Bring to front. There you go. And we can cut this. Let's say we just want to have a white logo on a blue background. Um, I'll select both of these. Go over to the shape builder. Tool hit Ault and Poop. Now we have that logo on a white background. Okay. Um all right, we're gonna move on to the next lesson now thinks 8. Fills & Strokes: All right. So I want to do a quick introduction to Phil's and strokes. Since we talked about it a little bit before. I want to go a bit more in depth with that. Um, whenever you have an object, let's just do a circle. You're gonna have to parts of that, um, object. You're gonna have what's called the stroke, which is this guy right here. Which is this color. That's the line that goes around your shape now, even more important that a stroke is a line that follows your when you're creating any line . Okay, so if I get the pencil tool over here and I start drawing that, that's not gonna have any. Phil, that's just a stroke. This is all just stroke now. It won't have a fill unless I create a closed shape like this. Now, with this, I can fill it with the color, just like I didn't do it. Uh, there we go. Okay. So now that's filled, and it also has a stroke. Let me delete thes and make this bigger. Okay. I'm gonna make the fill in the stroke completely different colors, so you can see them better. Okay. The fill in. This one is yellow and the stroke is pink. I'm going to select this and go up and you can see Here's your fill. Here's your stroke. Here's your stroke size so I can make this much bigger if I want. And here's some more information about the strokes that we're not going to talk about right now. Here's a pass ity. We already did that before. And here's some other options. Okay, the size and some other things. Um, if you click on just for the for having fun. If you click on these, you can see some different options in terms of the fill. You can change it to different colors, and you can fill it with some Grady INTs. We'll be talking about Grady INTs. Next. You can fill it with a pattern, Um, but for the most part, you're just going to want to fill it with a flat shape or possibly ingredient. Now, the stroke. You can change with the stroke panel here, so if you click on stroke, you can determine whether or not you want for that stroke to be inside of the um, lines of the shape or if you want it to be outside. You can do dashed lines right here. You can, you know, do a lot of different things with the stroke. And one of the things that I'm going that fills the main thing that you can do with the Phil is a Grady in. And we're gonna talk about that in a second. But what I want to talk about for for the rest of this tutorial is what you can do with Struck. So I'm gonna actually take this, and I'm gonna take away the Phil. Okay, So I'm gonna with the Phil selected, I'm gonna click on the no color thing right here. Okay, Now we have a stroke, and we have this line. And one thing that gave me a lot of trouble when I first started working with Illustrator was okay, This is basically kind of an effect that illustrators creating, But what if I want to make this into an actual, um, shape like this? If I want to use this is the shape. Well, you can go up and something that I use all the time is this feature called Object expand appearance. And when I click expand appearance you'll see that. Now that you have the lines, you'll have the anchor points all around this. This is now your object. And this is the filled object. Okay, this is the fill inside of the shape, and you can even go on to this shape, Click on the color for the stroke. And now, if you, you know, make thestreet bigger. You know, yellow is probably not the best color. Let's do blue. Now, you've added a stroke to your new shape. Okay? And you can do that again. Let's select that and do object. We'll get rid of the fill. You don't have to, but we'll just do that for fun. Okay, here we have the stroke. Just stroke. How do we make this into an object? Okay, let's go object. Expand. Okay. And now this is an object. These are actually two different, um, things so we can select on each one and move more in Aleppo. What happened there? Okay, I got it. Let's see. Let me go over to the appearance panel when we haven't talked about this yet. Appearance capacity. Mm. I guess what I'm doing is, um, for moved this it's gonna make this bigger? All this area is gonna be bigger. So what? I need to dio IHS group. These two together Control G. Yeah, and now they OK, There we go. Now they work together. Control G. There we go. Now we've got two separate things. Now, this is getting kind of boring. Um, let's go back to strokes, OK? Now I'm going to use the brush tool. We can use the brush tool, or you can use the pencil tool, and I'm gonna just draw shape here. Okay? Now, actually, I meant to just have this normal. So let's just put this normal. This is a normal stroke again, and you can do a lot of really cool things with the with these kinds of strokes. For brushes, you can add effects. So let's go to actually going to go over here to the brush tools over here on the right. Gonna drag this over. You can take this brush this stroke, and you can add actual brushstrokes that look like they're from an actual paintbrush. And there are tons. If you go appear on the, um, the panel, you can load all kinds of brushes, so there's arrows. Let's do arrows for a second. You can do arrows seeing that core. I'm not sure when you would ever use this, but you know, once you have this, one of the nice things about working with vectors is you can always kind of update stuff. So you can take this. You can change that toe a paintbrush. That looks terrible. Um, it's too big. So let's change the size down, okay? There's another kind of interesting thing to see what other options are open brush library . Um, I really like the the artistic one. So let's do brush. So what we get there? OK, paintbrush. As long as we've got this selected, if we click on this, it's going to apply those, um, that brush to your lines, Okay. And whenever we get, it will never wait. Paint something new. It's going to have that brush on it. And we can always just select thes two, for example, and change him or changing here, changing here. And you know, there's a 1,000,000 different ways to use these. But let's say we're just gonna do, uh, you know, still like that Touchstone logo, which is gonna make a circle here and then on top of that in white, I'm going to paint. I'm just gonna paint shape in front of that. I'm gonna change that color to white. Just so it see it. And this is not a great example. Actually, let me Let me just paint, um, the line down. There we go, and let's see it change that a little bit. All right, let's make that a little bigger. It's too much. Okay, okay. I mean, this isn't it's taking a Winny Awards. All right? Now, let's take that stroke and we can go up again and do Rast arise Appearance. Now we've got a shape. And now what can we do? We can go in and use the shape tool and delete that, and I believe Well, actually, we have 22 separate sides. This group, these together group. Okay, now we've got an object, and you know, that gives you something kind of interesting kind of real looking. There's a little piece that fell off there anyway, so that just gives you an idea of the things you can do with the with strokes. Okay. Strokes are amazingly powerful. And, um, you know, we'll touch a little bit more on those later, but I just want to give you a quick idea of what they were 9. Intro to Gradients: a really important and powerful aspect of filling shape is Theo the Grady int tool. So let's take a look at that for a second. Okay? I'm gonna just put a regular circle here, going down shift and moving it with my space bars down so I can move it around as I'm drawing it Sums going to draw it right here. Okay? And we've got just a regular circle that's got a blue, bluish green color inside of it. So I'm gonna go right here. There's several ways that you can create a Grady in one is to go to the Grady int tool here . The other way is just a click right here on Grady int. And the other one is to open up the Grady int panel. So let's go toe windows radiant. And here we go. And this is where we're gonna kind of edit. Argh! Radiant! All right, so what I'm gonna do is probably for the 1st 1 I'm just going to click on the Grady int tool. You click on that, you bring it over to your object, and you just click on it. And there you go. Now, here is going to be from one great one side of Grady into the other one. And here you just have a simple white to black fade and that's also represented right here . So if we change something over here, it's gonna change it on the Grady int is Well, okay, you can see that. That's changing. Now we can also click over here and let's say we want to change the color on that. I'm gonna double click. And we have our options here. I'm gonna change this from grayscale toe rgb red, green, blue And I'm just you can click on swatches on this side. We don't have any swatches loaded. Um, or you can just click on colors. So I'm gonna do a light color on one side, and then I'm gonna click on the other side here and also turn change that RGB I'm not sure why it's rgb um and I'm gonna change that to a slightly different color and you can see that you get this kind of iPhone style, you know, how about the new iPhones? When they came out, everything the new thing that they were doing was having a color fade from one slightly like a green to Ah, a little more yellow green or something like that. Um, so anyway, here you can. This is just a simple linear fade. You can also do a radio fade a radio, Grady. In which will mean that the grade Ian is going in from the inside. And that actually is going to give you more of a sphere. Look, Okay, so if I if I want to copy this in the middle, this color in the middle, what I usually do is I'll create another color that's right beside the color that I want and just drag it over. And if you want to get rid of a color, you just drag it and pull it off and you don't You know it'll disappear. So if I want to create something that looks like a circle, I'll just click on that and dark in this color. And it's, you know, it's a little bit clumsy working with this, so I'll put it in, see him like a and just bring debt and bring up the darkness a little bit more black. Okay? And if you don't understand that, don't worry too much. I mean, this is it's not that important. Um, it's just kind of like it's a little clumsy working with colors in the Grady INTs. So there we go. Now, if you want to see kind of an old school style that I used to dio I don't really do it as much now because people don't really like, um, they don't really like the bubble look. But what I used to do is, let's say I'll take this circle. I'm gonna do control, see, and then controlled B and control be paste, whatever. You, um, copied right back where it was, and I'm going, I'm doing to a copy. You see how I've got a copy of the same shape? And what I used to do in this kind of is, I guess, kind of like the x box looker or whatever. Um, me change the Which one is on top here? I'm gonna do a linear fade, and I'm gonna make this white too. It's gonna be white toe white, but one side if you'll notice down here, you've actually got the opacity so you can take the a passage to zero. And as you can see, it fades too, you know, to nothing. Now if I want to change, What if I want to change where the radiant begins and ends? What if I wanna make it so? This is the white part, and this is the transparent part. Well, what I need to dio is I'll go over here to the tool, click on the tool ingredient tool again and you'll get the option. You see that little, um, curly circle. You get the option to change way your radiant is on that object. So as I move that around, you can see that it's affecting the object it's attached to in different ways, and we're getting more of a bubble kind of effect Now. I click off that, and there we get. We get more of a three D bubble effect, and that's a simple introduction to Grady INTs and how powerful they can be. 10. Effects and the Appearance Panel: now for this class, we're going to take another light year jump. Gigantic jumping illustrator, as I show you two very, very important panels. OK, Thea appearance panel and the effects panel now the effects panel. I really don't use that much, but the appearance panel is absolutely key, okay? And I wanna introduce them together because I use them together all the time. Um, when you use when I use the effects panel I use it is part of the appearance panel. Here is the appearance panel right here. Okay. All you do is go upto window and get, um, appearance. Or you can do shift F six, and it'll appear okay. And what I'm gonna do is just draw a simple shape. A circle. Okay, here we go. Circle. And if you'll notice over here on the appearance panel, you'll see that it says path. Um, stroke, fill, opacity. Whatever is selected is showing up here in the appearance panel. It's telling you about the appearance of this object. So if I change this to a pinkish color, it's gonna change over here. Okay. As long as that selected. If I all click and bring this over here and let's say make this a blue. And now I click on this. Now we're looking at all the different parts of this object. Okay, so this subjects selected and you see it here. Okay, let's get rid of that. Now. One of the really, really cool things about the appearance panel is you can create all sorts of effects to this object that are edible. And you can, um, go back and change them whenever you want. And that includes effects. So let me give you an example. Okay, We have fills. Um, I'm going to change the color of the Phil. I'm going to put a stroke here. I'm gonna just put actually, I'm going to do that over here. I'm going to make a green stroke. Upset the North. We're gonna get a stroke. Green stroke. I'm gonna make that big. Let's do too. All right. So now we have a green stroke. That's a 10 and a Phil. That's this red color. Now we can go into the stroke. I'm gonna click on the stroke, and we can start changing the properties, for example. You can see that it's right on the line here. Now we can change that. So again, it's inside. It's outside. Um, you can change it to dashed lines. You can change how the dash lines are. I'm not going to go in depth on this, But, you know, I just want you to be afraid when you see that you can change how the dashes are there, not uniform like that. Okay. But, um, I'm just gonna get rid of the dash lines for now, hips remember, you always have to be on the object selected on the object toe. Have things happen to it. Okay. And now one of the really cool things about this is you can add more strokes to it or more feels to it, so I can add another stroke on top of the stroke. And let's change the color of that one, Teoh. Just change it to orange, and you can add new stroke, and you can do that inside. Outside is sitting on top of the other one. Um, and that's a way to, you know, at a lot of functionality to a shape pretty quickly. Okay? Or you could just make that white if you wanted Teoh. And you know, it's all just a way to combine things together and create new things. Um, another. Now, the leap and bound we're gonna take with this is adding effects to the appearance panel. Okay, so let's go up. I really don't use effects that much. Um, and when I do, I typically the warp is the one that I use a lot. And the war basically just takes a shape and warps it in a variety of different ways. Okay, so let's select on this guy and let's do effect warp arc. Okay. Now, when this panel comes up, you're gonna have a little preview button. If you have a slow computer, the, um, the computer, it won't render the the effect until you hit preview. But let's go ahead and hit preview. And okay, what is going on here? That is a total mistake. Now, what is happening is we've applied the effect to the stroke. Okay? Now, let's go back to cancel. Let me see here. Now, I need to make sure that I'm applying the effect to the entire path. Okay, So let's go to effect warp arc preview. And now you can see that all of the entire object is being affected by this warpath. Okay? And you can change it over here. You can move this around two horizontally where it's being affected and vertically where it's being affected. And this also gives you a bunch of different options as to, um, how you're going, Teoh. Warp it More pure object. OK, so you could do it in an arc. A bulge in the middle. I'll put this here so you can kind of see bulge or a bulge inward. You can always do the positive and the negative. The effect. Um, flag flag is always good. That gives you this little effect. But one thing I want you to realize is these air not, uh, permanent effects. Okay, so let's go toe OK, and you'll see right here the effect once you click. OK, the effect is right here, but it's not permanent. If you go, if you figure out later something happens and you say, Oh, well, I don't like how this was done. I can go back and I can change it again, or I can even change the effect. Okay, Now I'm never gonna use, you know, a circle like this. So let's use something that we would do in the real world. Let's look at I want to do a quick example of this guy right here. Okay? Now, if you look at the Netflix, you might say, um okay, how did they do this effect? Where they have the top is flat and the bottom is curved. Well, I'm pretty sure that they did this by using a similar effect to this. So, um, I'm just going Teoh create a new text object. I'm gonna click on. Just click here, and I'm gonna hit Netflix. This is again. We're just using the Miriam Pro. There's a ton of different fonts that are kind of be similar to this. Um, it's more or less. I mean, it's not perfect, but it works. So I'm just going Teoh, I usually don't like to just drag and transform my text. What I like to do is use the, um, text tool, Sarge, go to window type character, and I'll change the size of everything down here. Um, so make that larger will space out the letters a little better. And this just keeps you from getting into keeps you in whole numbers. Okay, so let's just There we go. We'll do it like that. Now, how do we get this little curve on the bottom? Well, if you look over here, you'll see that we have the This is now saying type and we have a pass ity. We can change the opacity. See, we can change a lot of different things. We can go into this stuff later. This is where you go. You can deal with clipping masks, capacity mass and things like that. We're not gonna deal with that right now. Um, but what? I want to do it. See what happens if we've got were selected on type and we want to go up to effect warp. And we need to weaken Just click arc for now. But what's the effect that we need to use If we only want to affect the bottom arc of this ? It appears like it would be this guy because the top is flat in the bottoms curve. So let's click on that. Okay, that looks a little bit off, but that's because we're going positive with the blend. OK, I foot with the been Sorry. So let's do that backwards in this guy would see how that looks. Okay, lets but the's zero, but everything at just If you need to make it here, you can just select this and do zero. Okay, that's starting to look a little bit more like the logo. It's not perfect. You know, I don't think we even have the right fought here, but it gives you an idea of how you can do that. Okay, Now, let's go to the type tool up here. You can see that on the type tool we now have this war, this war park. Okay. And I'm going to go ahead and just add a red background. Let's try to make it as close as possible. So we're right here on the, um I'm just going to lock that guy underneath the Netflix. I'm going to, um, create a red square. So there we go, going to do the eyedropper and click on that red. And I'm going to take this red and drag it under the Netflix. There we go. I'm gonna select both of these guys and hit the, um, a line tool. So they're both, you know, in the middle, and you can actually align everything toothy art board that you're working on. So let's do a line A line toe art board. Okay. And then we're gonna center that again. There we go. Okay. Now, of course, Netflix needs to be white. There we go. And you're gonna notice something. When I select Netflix here, you're going to see the old Netflix text here. You're not going to see the Netflix with the effect on it. Now, once I have this pretty well done, what I will do is okay. I want to make the first thing that I need to do is turn Netflix into a shape once you are totally ready and you know that you're done. I'm gonna take I'm gonna select on this. And like we did before, I'm gonna go up to type and do create outlines. So now, as you can see the Netflix, let's turn off the, um, the effect for a second. Now, this is just shapes, OK? It's a bunch of shapes together. You can see all the individual letters here, and they're group together, and then we have If you turn on the effect now, you can see the effect, okay? And if you if you want Teoh um, make the effect permanent. Like, let's say you want to send this off to a client as a finished logo. You don't wanna have that effect on it anymore. Okay? You can say OK, well, I'm gonna tweak it a little bit more. Let's tweak it a little more. Let's play with it. Okay? And that's it. That's gonna be our logo. Okay. You don't want to send them a logo. That's got the effect. The war perfect. You want to make this? Actually, you know, the shape look like this guy. Okay, so we're gonna go up again, go to object and expand appearance, and now the shape is the shape that we have. That's the, um, you know, the final shape. We don't have any effect on that anymore. Okay, if we click on that, you just see the group of letters that air there. Okay. So, hopefully that I mean, I know it's kind of complicated, but I think it's important to learn the effects panel as part of the appearance panel. Okay? And you know, once you have this, you can, um, do other effects that I don't really use a lot of these effects but just toe look through them. You can see. Um let's see. Distort, transform. I don't use that. You can twist and we can transform. You can. You can, you know, do all kinds of things to shapes. Um, I don't ever use thes. You can do like, um a drop shadow. Here's some photo shop effects that I almost never use. Ah, you know, for example, drop shadow. You go preview, and there's a little drop shadow you can. I don't like toe have raster kind of effects like that. This in illustrator. So I would do zero blur on this guy and let's see, capacity 100 and let's see how that legs and that looks a little bit more like this. This is actually a little more complicated. It it's a stroke with a three d effect. Um, and we can do that. It's pretty easy, Teoh. Redo that. So Okay. And now we have that drop shadow. If you want to weaken, do the same thing that we did before and make that part of the logo to and make this a vector cut out. So let's go to object. Expand appearance. And now we've got this as our logo we've got The shadow is actually, if we double click on that will go inside of that and you can see that we have this black logo now behind it. And you know, you can double click on the Netflix group that's together now, and you can also inside of that embedded object. You can see that we're now inside of that group. You can add a stroke, a black stroke to that, make it bigger. And I just want you to realize how deep this goes. It's really, you know, amazing how many levels there are now. This obviously doesn't look like the logo, but it just, you know, the idea is to give you a feel for how it all works.
