1. Why Should I take this Class?: this brief class is all about building trust and effectively communicating with others. I mean, how valuable would it be to you to have simple, proven ways of building trust with other people? And although the leadership and business applications are obvious, think of social situations making new friends dating etcetera. So in this class, what you're gonna learn is why integrity is so crucial in leadership. You're gonna learn the master key to having your followers or other people, for that matter, buy into your vision. You're gonna learn how to build lasting trust with your followers. You're gonna learn how to inspire your followers to live up to higher ideals. You're gonna learn the true way to get your followers to willingly support your vision, how to get your followers to open up to you. You're also gonna learn how to rapidly build trust with other people. You're gonna learn how to easily get people to listen to you. You're gonna learn how to apply the 70 30 rule for dramatically better communication. You're gonna learn how to get people to feel comfortable with you. You're gonna learn what other people are constantly doing when you communicate with them. You're gonna learn a simple technique to keep conversations rolling for hours. You're gonna also learn what outsiders think about leadership and why it's wrong. You're gonna learn what most people don't realize about riel leadership. You're gonna learn what you must know in order to understand the essence of influence. And you're also gonna learn how to build lasting loyalty with your followers. So go ahead and roll now to start enjoying more influence, report and trust in your relationships. 2. How to Rapidly Build Trust & Establish Lasting Loyalty with Your Followers: Now we're going to discuss exactly how to build trust quickly, as well as developed long term loyalty with your followers. Now, in order to do that, we need to first discuss integrity and honesty. And then we're going to get into the actual nitty gritty of how to apply all of these things for immediate results. Okay, And this is really cool, actionable techniques that I'm gonna reveal later in this lecture. Now, I think most of you know what honesty is. Hopefully right. But let's be clear on what we mean by integrity. Integrity is defined as adherence to moral and ethical principles. Soundness of moral character on Esty. Others have more plainly stated it as doing the right thing, even when no one is looking or having your deeds match your words. But why is integrity so important? Why is it critical to effective leadership? It's critical because if you want your followers to buy into your vision, they have to trust you. So said another way. If your followers can't trust you, then nothing else matters. You won't be able to lead them. Integrity is always at the top of the list for character traits of effective leaders. It's commonly considered a given in the foundation on which all other leadership characteristics are built. In fact, research by the Center for Creative Leadership has revealed that integrity is the number one criteria in determining the success of top executives. Unfortunately, trust is one of those things that can take a long time to develop, but it only takes a minute to destroy. As the old saying goes, Well, that may be true. There are ways to effectively build trust rapidly, but you won't have it for long if you're not demonstrating honesty and integrity in all your affairs. So you need to value and protect that trust with your followers at all costs. Now, building trust is also done by consistently living in accord with your values, which is why we went over in the last lecture exactly how to identify those values and make a list of those etcetera. When you live with integrity, you're gonna inspire others to find and live by their own ideals and values, which make them more willing to support your vision. Your followers are gonna be more open with you. If they trust you, they're gonna be open to sharing their true concerns and their true values. If they can trust you, you need to know what your followers really believe. Deep down inside, if you want tohave maximum influence and loyalty. Abraham Lincoln was a great leader who embodied these principles so much that he was literally known as honest Abe. Everyone knew where they stood with Lincoln, even his most fierce political rivals. Now this made him believable. In very influential. It made his followers comfortable with him and allow themselves to be let. So now it's time to apply this in your own life. Let's start with how toe build trust rapidly. Now, the first thing to understand is that in order for people to trust you, they have to believe you In order for them to believe you, they have to listen to you. Makes sense. So how do you get people to listen to you? Well, in short, you listen to them. When you interact with someone, listen intently to them be fully present and keep your attention 100% focused on them. So you allow them to feel that they are your whole world when you're speaking. Okay, Now, this could be more challenging than it sounds, because our attention drifts from the present moment. Constantly, Anyone who's ever attempted to meditate will know exactly what I'm talking about. So this takes some practice and you can't fake it, Okay? You have to actually be president and actually pay attention to the other person. When you're with them, you can't just pretend it won't work. So another thing to consider is you want to ask questions rather than speak. Okay, A good rule of thumb is 70 30. When you're with someone one on one, allow them to speak at least 70% of the time. If you can get up to 80 20 where you allow them to talk 80% of the time, even better now. Obviously, to be able to do this, you need some questions to ask, and it's helpful to make a list of a variety of value and opinion questions. I'm gonna give you a couple, but you want to practice these a bit so that it doesn't come off as insincere when you ask them. So you want to encourage your followers to talk about themselves in their interest and be sincerely interested in their answers. So some of the questions and variations of these questions that you want to make a list of in practice are things like, You know, What do you think about blank? What's important to you about blank? OK, when you ask, What do you think about You're asking for someone's opinion? You're showing that you care about their opinion that you value them when you ask what's important to you about. That's a value question. You're striking at what they value about a particular thing that's important information toe have if you want to influence people, so ask for your followers feedback in input. Frequently, when people feel listened to, they feel validated and understood. When they feel validated and understood, they will like you and feel comfortable with you. They will also listen to you. Now when people meet you, they are generally first and foremost consciously and subconsciously scanning to see if you're trustworthy. If you let them talk the majority of the time, they're gonna be compelled to listen to you and like you. Now, another technique that will keep conversations rolling for hours is something called que a que, which stands for question. Answer, question you see when most people talk with someone else, they simply answer the questions. Okay, so for example, someone says, you know, do you like the Blue Jays? And they say No. Okay, that's question. Answer. But when Master conversationalists talk with another person, they ask questions about the answers they receive. So let me give you an example. And in this example, Ted is our master conversationalist in gym is his follower. OK, this is a very basic example, but you'll get the point. So Ted says, Why do you like the Blue Jays? And Jim responds, I really like there. Center fielder and their pitcher is just fun to watch. So then Ted follows up, he says, Really? Why is he so fun to watch? And then, of course, at that point, Jim lights up like a Christmas tree. As you'll see will happen with people that you're interacting with when you start asking their opinion, let them talk Now you can do this with any topic and that you could just let the conversation roll on for hours and hours, and at the end of it, people are going to feel like you're the great best conversationalist in the world because you because they were talking the whole time. Okay, if you say something, they can disagree with it. Okay, But if they say it, it's much more difficult for them to disagree with themselves. Makes sense. Now, you can do this with any topic and let the conversation roll on for hours and hours. Now, obviously, you're gonna want to mix up your questions so it doesn't sound like an interrogation, but you get the main idea. The natural tendency is to talk about ourselves and simply answer questions. If you want to rapidly build trust and be able to influence others, let them be the star of the show. Demonstrate through your sincere interest in them that they're important. When outsiders think about leadership, they often think of extremely powerful leaders who are the Alfa male types. What most people don't realize is that really leaders let their followers be the stars. They focus on building up their followers egos, not their own. So, in the words of the great Dan Kennedy, that's a writer downer. Okay, you may want to write that down. Something to keep in mind that you want to really file in the back of your memory banks forever is that people make decisions primarily based on emotion, and then they justify those decisions with logic. Okay, I'm gonna say it again. People make decisions primarily emotionally, and then they justify those decisions with logic. Now, that's why in presidential elections, you often hear people say things like, Oh, I just like him or I like him. What they're often times really saying or what they really mean is he seems trustworthy now . They're also indicating that that person struck an emotional chord with them. We're gonna cover more ways to communicate influential E and had a strike an emotional chord with your followers in future lessons. Now that you know some specific ways to build trust rapidly, how do you develop a long term loyalty with your followers? Now, if you truly want o build lasting loyalty than first, you need to make honesty the foundation of everything that you dio actually be honest. Let your followers know that you stand for honesty. If you're a leader in business, you need to let your followers know that anything less than communication will not be tolerated. Okay, so one way to do. This is toe. Let your followers know that being honest and accurately representing projects or their work style, etcetera affect everyone in the organization. So what I'm saying is honesty needs to literally radiate from everything that you do. So this means promptly admitting when you're wrong and learning how to put your ego aside. Don't pretend to know everything just because you're the leader. Okay, Rial leaders, air honest about what they know and what they don't know. So another way to demonstrate this principle into apply it is to be consistent. So what do I mean by that? That means be consistent in your arrival time to meetings or toe work. Be consistent in how you dress. Be consistent, how you respond to stress be consistent and how you interact with your followers. People need to know what to expect from you. So said a solid precedent based on your values and your vision which we've already covered and stick to it also, if you establish a policy or a rule, you need to commit fully to it. Okay, Anything less than a full commitment to what you say is going to be perceived as weakness by your followers. Now, this isn't a course on how to trick people into following you. This is a course on riel leadership, so I'm going to assume that you already are living with or truly intend toe live with integrity and honesty. Otherwise, leadership isn't for you. You simply won't be ableto build riel loyalty long term. Okay, It sounds like the old, you know, the old fool me once. Shame on you. Fool me twice. Okay, Shame on point is you can't fool me again, OK? The George Bush quote actually care about your followers and truly have their best intentions at heart.
