About This Class

Do you know that watercolors can be used as an opaque painting medium to do paintings such as these?

Welcome to the Sketchbook everyday Series of courses.

In this sixth course, I'll show you a step by step demonstration of how I painted this painting in my sketchbook using watercolors.

My name is Mandar, a Fine Artist, and a sculptor. I will be leading you through this course.

I'll show you every color that I mix, every brush stroke I make and along the way tell you my logic behind my every move.

I also tell you why I mix particular colors for particular shapes, how to avoid the monotony of colors, how to direct viewer's attention to the focal area, how aerial perspective affects the colors and how you can use edges to suggest distance.

Making paintings like these requires just your watercolors, a sketchbook and your time. Your sketchbook is your personal place to practice, so you neither have the pressure to create a gallery ready painting nor the pressure to make a big size painting every time.

This series of courses is for you if you want to improve your art and are willing to practice art-making for at least 15 minutes every day. It doesn't matter if you are a student, a professional, a homemaker or a retired person. No prior art making experience is necessary to take this course. Just having the interest is enough.

I look forward to seeing you inside this class!

Happy painting!

1. Introduction: Do you know that Marta colors can be used as an OPEC painting medium through paintings such as these? Welcome to the sketchbook. Everyday cities, of course, is in the sixth course and show you a step by step demonstration off how I painted this painting in my sketchbook using mortar colors. My name is Mandir, a fine artist and sculptor. I'll be leaving you through this course. I'll show you every color that I makes every Bristol that I make and along the way, tell you my logic behind my every move. I also tell you why I makes particular colors for a particular shape. How to our monetary off colors, how to direct your attention to the focal area, how aerial perspective affects the colors on how you can use edges to suggest distance making paintings like these requires just your watercolors. Ah, sketchbook and your time. Your sketchbook is your personal place to practice, so you neither have the pressure to create a gallery really painting nor the pressure to make a big size painting every time you paint the cities, of course, is for you. If you want to improve your art and are willing to practise art making for at least 15 minutes everyday. It doesn't matter if you are a student of professional home. A car already type person. No prior art making experience is necessary to take this course. Just having interest is in a I look forward to seeing you inside this last. 2. Initial Sketching: Welcome to this lecture. I have a watercolor pad on which I have applied this masking tape so that I get a clean edge when I removed. After the painting is done, I have, ah, watercolor palette, but I'm going to use thes watercolors in O pic manner in an open manner on. That's the reason I have these Chinese white also on the planet at two places, and now I'm going toe start painting. The first thing with Joe is Ongondo sketched the scene, so I'm going to paint off, Seen off a seashore in which there is a mountain range in the background on, there are some big but office, and there's a shoreline off which eyes see only apart off it on. So let's start getting. I'm using a very thin, very, very tin blue color. I don't want this dream to get into it. Typically, when you paint with watercolors in a transparent way, you don't sketch with brush. You do it with pencil, but since I'm goingto anyway, apply colors in an opaque manner, I have the luxury off painting the scene or drawing the scene in with a paint brush on with a very light Qallab on. That's what I'm doing right now. And here is a rock which is on the sea shore on this site. Andi, there'll be few rocks here. And if you don't hear rocks on this, I don't so very small ones. And then I have to bend cool rocks here, which are the good size. So this is the one on this one is going to be the 2nd 1 This is almost going past this horizon line. I think I have enough outline to start actually painting. So, unlike simple watercolors or transparent watercolors wedding, you start painting with, like the list. And as you progress, you go on adding darker colors. I'm going toe use this in opaque manner. And that's the reason I can start with darts first and then go lighter and lighter. And that's what I'm going to do. So the darkest darks will be in the foreground. Then the next level of darkness will be, or the lower level of darkness will be in these rocks, and then these mountains will go on feeling and feeling into the horizon. So I'm going to start with painting these rocks for that. I'm gonna use this argument in blue and some born sienna. You can see that I'm using paint just like I think, and in a ticker manner. So he goes the first layer off color jokes. You can see how the color changes its behavior when I make it with, you can see that this stroke is very smooth, whereas these stocks have a broken, kind off appeal to them. And that's because the pain was much drive here, and I added some water in in between. So I wanted to come the color a bit more and a few rocks here, and a big group is on this side. And now income go big rocks in the water. As we go towards the horizon, things started becoming much, much bluer than they are in the foreground. So and have toe make this rock a bit more bluer than the rocks in this foreground. I want these rocks will have shot of edge. That's the reason I'm painting with off lead brush because the rocket, small in size, I'll have toe use a smaller brush to get a nice stroke. They will. It has really use it toe laying some darks here see how I am holding the brush. I'm not holding it like this. I could, but then I get a better stroke when I hold it like this. Andi, indicate few rocks in the distance on one or two rocks here. Speaking out off the surface of the water in this scene, the light is coming from this site. So there will not be much highlight on this side of these rocks. Where is this Rocks? These rocks will have highlights on this site. So that completes part one off the painting. 3. Colors Of The Sea: next set off. Dark shapes in this painting are going to be these mountains, this field with the darkest in amongst these. And then this will be lighter than this and so on. So I'll start painting these now again, I will take some ultra marine blue who on this mountain being in the front, he's one toe, have some amount off greenery to it. So I'm adding a touch off. I want to make Make the pain ticker, adding ticker pain to it. Andi, some weight just to make it. We'll bake and let me test this color here. It looks too great. It has to be more. It has to have more color to it or more saturation toe. That's the reason I'm adding some more color. Let's test it again. This looks okay to me right now on. Let me go ahead painting these and then I can always come back and make some corrections. Since this is so particular. Now go on. Adding white and blue to it. Make them even more lighter in shade. You can see how I'm using the edge off the brush. Andi pulling some pain from the all right. Earlier mountain now again some white and some more blue down the page is to make it easy for myself. And that's the rise in Lane. I leave these colors to dry and I want to know makes a color for the scene. For that, I'm gonna be used cobalt blue And of course, wait. I might add in some off this degree, just toe done that color a bit or to reduce the chroma. And in the sea there are my people different colors. So I'm not want to paint the whole see with this single color. These are hand we just come out. I would be very careful when I paint in this idea because it's water. I have to paint these in Oriental strokes, then vertical and please the final strokes. I need to be hard is under like this. No, I had some different shades of blue year. He fired, painted the sea first and in the rocks would have bean once a possible to paint, giggling that. But then there are some December vintages and advantages off each day on each metal of plenty. Use a smaller brush because it gets to problem. I didn't get into these smaller areas with a bigger brush. Yeah, this is much better brush for these smaller areas. I want to ensure that these changes are very sharp. - The water on this side off the rock will be slightly darker. Obviously, because off the shadow off the rock getting making some more paint, I might have some of this color. No, they I had mixed. I just want to kill the the brightness of the blue. Here it's on some work and there is also some amount off green in the water. Here, have some yellow making slightly greenish, even some more. It might seem too much that no, I might have another layer off bluish color on top of it. But for now, I'll go ahead with this color just to break that monitor. Tony, I'm going toe. Are this this color toe? Some of the areas in the sea Uh , I might go up a few of these Iraq's on might come in here off course. It feels that if I had painted this mortar first would have been easier. But there's no one single rule which tells you what you should pain first and what next? It changes with each bending Onda objects to having it. Even if you miss the order, you can overcome the problem by having more patients and painting more slowly and with some more thought. You can see that I am not making any color in big quantities and then applying it everywhere. That is a sure short way to make your painting uninteresting. What I'm making the bend as I require it. Andi. That ensures that there is no single color which gets applied everywhere. That is what I d in this year on their ends, impressed with the vending as these are rocks. The bottom edge off these rocks has to be what isn't for them to look like rocks, which are looking out of the surface of the water. Otherwise, they would look as if there floating in the this heart is on the line, drowns them on, then gives them a feeling that there actually coming out from the surface. As we approach towards the bottom off the painting, I want to meet the colors nightly darker, just to make sure that the viewers attention doesn't come toe this area off painting too much Bless. This idea is anyway going to have less off life forming on it, and I think that is end of Steptoe for me, 4. Painting Sky And Surf: No, I can add some white off the waves here. I'm using this color without any dilution or without adding any water because I want it to be complete white off the set and does great down a bit when gets mixed with the red color underneath. But then, that's OK. - I'm using almost dry brush. I didn't like this stroke off the blue colors off the white color, so I want before lapping. It doesn't look natural, so I have first near the surf and then I'll go in and add the drunk. - I want to add some white color here, but I don't want it to be as white as the surf in the foreground. That's the reason I diluted, develop and then applying it like this. Most later, Dr Wish I might come in again here with slightly darker blue, but then I do that when it's trying. So next it this time toe paint the sky on for the sky. I'm going to use civilian and a lot of white. I might add some court, at least for the top part of this guy, and as I come down, I'm goingto make it lighter and lighter. I won't discolor Toby. Lighter but lighter and thinner, but not so much that I can't control it. - I will make this mountain line a bit hazy because as things go into the distance, the edges become less shark on in painting. That's one of the ways you can show that object is that fun of distance? So we'll meet that I have to have a drier grass on and drag it all. So this the media's I do not like that. The tip off the rock is touching their top off the mountain. I have to call it that because that creates unnecessary attention. Good having thing there. - I want to come in with some take weight. It's always difficult to know when to stop on painting shouldn't look or what would on. That's the reason. Stopping at the right point is very necessary. I want to come in. I just need for clean up some senior on the ballot. There is no white on. I want to come in with their I would love that. Here. I want this layer to be 10 just like the bullies and stop here on in the next part. Off this electoral, give highlights for these crops 5. Highlights On The Rocks: Now I'm going to come in with a lighter color on me, Kyle. It's on these sites off these rocks because that's where the light is falling. Stan, I'm going to use right on this side because I don't want this blue mixed white on. Let me just this color here. It's a bit much our vehicle white on some good on and school looks but light for me. I'm adding some blue. Good. Dial it down on. Let's see how it looks here on its I think we're good to go with this. Some window on highlights Toe this rock with age of this brush on . And now we have to come in with this dark again kind off. March 2 colors some ingredient. I'm applying this color very, very thick. Um, dragging the brush or the paper. Basically, what I'm doing is I'm breaking up those highlight 80 years so that they don't look as if they are very, very sharp. Andi Now I need to have some highlights in other places. I do not want these highlights. Toe. Take some. Take the attention away from those rocks. Well, very, very like the highest. Like in the end defeat just a few really is. Similarly, I need toe and some highlights on the distant mountains. So they want to be very faint about this colorful, dry and see if it is light enough Come back again. Okay. I realize that the white returned a plan here. Waas looking bright then that time. But then now it has faded away. So I want Oh, reintroduce some off that white this training to get some clouds. Andi, I want to make this guy lighter in the ideas which are near the mountain because that's the rising or towards the horizon. At least I'll wait for these things to dry. Andi, then come in is, if required, reading some serve again with the quickest possible on. I needed to add some rock here and look at this painting for some time and see if I need to have anything else I might add. Light line here near the horizon. Used to indicate the serve near the I think I need to add some hiding here on and stop now and see if I need to come back and had anything else 6. Final Touches: I looked at the painting, but more Andi. I feel the sky needs to be lighter. Much more like that here. So I do that first. Okay. Andi, since it is big color can do these corrections really easily on Let me check. Good. His edge, of course, needs to be much more blood. But I'm happy with the color. So it's a drag. Is dry brush or the H to make it blood on. Then go on. Applying this color It's not better than what Waas What? It was clear and I think I can live with it. Ondo, let me see if I can add a few more highlights on this wanting silage to be very timidly put . - Andi , I think I call this painting complete. Just one thing remains is signing it? Of course I can go on finessing over details, but there's no end to it. So let me. I stopped when I feel that there is enough information and it Andi, that's it, removed the tape and I assure you how it looks. You have to be very careful when you remove the tape, especially when the paper is 10 or the tape sticks too much to the paper and pulling the tape away from the painting so that even if some layer of people comes off, I want really stopping the painting itself. - On that thank you and hope you have enjoyed seeing the process and gain something out of it. It's these talks were on this some some more. Take served with the water and indicate babes. That's it. Thank you.
