Project Description

Let's Start Knitting!

a29d8221

First thing's first: download the PDF pattern file and print it out. This is the file attached to this project. You'll want a hard copy of this pattern while you follow along in the video.

To successfully knit this hat you should be comfortable knitting, purling, casting on and casting off. If you need to get these skills under your belt, head over to How to Knit, where I go over these four important skills. Then, come back here and we can knit together!

Materials:

  • 1 skein of TJOCKT Martta the Merino (100% extra fine merino; 140 m/200g)
This is a super bulky weight yarn that I use in the tutorial. Adult Size requires approx. 66m/72yds; Child Size requires approx. 48m/53yds; Baby Size requires approx. 39m/43yds
  • 10mm/US 15 straight knitting needles
  • Pom pom maker or cardboard to make a tracer
  • Ruler or tape measure
  • Sharp scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Need Yarn or a Kit? Use this Promo Code!

Finished Hat Circumference:

  • Baby: 13.4”
  • Child: 15.9”
  • Adult: 19"

Pattern Notes:

Gauge: 10.5” = 4”/10cm in Stockinette Stitch

If you're not familiar with the concept of gauge, read all about it here. It's very important to get gauge!

This hat is knit back and forth on flat needles and then seamed together with mattress stitch. If this sounds scary, don't worry! We'll go through it all in the video.

Got all your materials? Let's Knit!

Part of the fun in knitting is sharing your projects with friends and watching how their projects progress. Since we can't all teleport to each other, the next best thing is sharing our projects in the gallery!

So, let's share our knitting in sections, like a progress report (but fun! And with no scary boss hovering over your shoulders.)

REPORT 1: Snap a photo of your supplies: the yarn, needles, notions and any other necessities you need (ie. tea, your cat, snuggie, soothing music etc.)

Where did you get  your supplies?

REPORT 2: Choose a size and cast on! Snap a photo of your completed 2x2 rib and increase row.

REPORT 3: At this point, you've knit all the Stockinette stitch you need for your size. Snap a photo of your hat pre-decrease. It should look like a rectangle.

REPORT 4: But it won't look like a rectangle for long! After you've worked your decreases, your hat will curve inwards. You know the drill: snap a photo of your hat after working the decrease rows.

REPORT 5: You've finished you decreases and now we're onto seaming. We'll turn your curvy rectangle into something that looks a heckuva lot like a hat! Share a photo of your hat after seaming.

REPORT 7: Now it's time to make a pom pom! Do you have a pom pom maker? Or some cardboard to make your own tracer? Get started making a pom pom and snap a photo of that glorious pom!

FINAL REPORT: You've cast off and your hat is off the needles! Major high fives! Share your project in the project gallery!
