About This Class

The organisation of elements and meaning

What can we expect from such a topic?

The organisation of elements and meaning will cover the processes of organisation, perception, understanding and interpretation in the context of graphic design.

These processes play a major role on how the idea, message or concept of a design will be transmitted.

The pitfalls and common errors which can occur will be covered in this topic. Let’s take a closer look on what we can expect from this learning unit.

What do we want to achieve in this learning unit?

We want to understand how the process of organisation creates meaning in a design.

Organisation is an important part when it comes to generating meaning and is therefore a necessary topic to look at when it comes to creating an understandable design.

We want to understand how we perceive elements in a design.

Seeing and perceiving is natural to us and is a process which is done unconsciously but it has a big impact on the generation of meaning when it comes to overlooking elements.

We want to understand what is necessary to create an understandable design.

Understanding is just like the way of communication in a conversation: It is important if you want to let the other person be part of the conversation.

We want to understand how elements and meaning are connected, interpreted and connoted.

Communication can become problematic if people speak a different language or have different concepts. Knowing how we connect, interpret and connote will help us to tailor the right way of communication.

What are we going to cover?

Under the subtopic “Organisation” we will cover the following terms:

  • Structure
  • Elements
  • Hierarchy

Seeing is divided into two parts:

  • Perception
  • Filtering

Understanding divides into knowledge and the way of thinking.

And meaning will cover three terms:

  • Connection
  • Interpretation
  • Connotation

Hello my name is Simon Claes from InoshiroDesign.

I’m engaged with the topic graphic design on a hobby basis for quite a while now and I want to share the knowledge I’ve learned here. I’m going to give you an insight of what it takes to create a good design on a basic level.
