About This Class


Introduction to Japanese 4 is the last course in the Introduction to Japanese series. In this course, counting from 1 to 99 are covered, as well as a few real-life applications. Knowing how to count to 99 is a very basic fundamental to learning the Japanese language. In order to talk about topics involving anything from time, to age, phone numbers, and even money- there will be countless occasions where you'll need to have the ability to discuss numerical values. So, with that being said, let's jump right in. 

*Important* All courses after Introduction to Japanese 3 will be taught using the Japanese systems of writing. It is important that you are either able to read or are learning to read in order to get the most out of this course. 1. Introduction: me as uncle need to alcohol. Tony this. Hello, everybody. Welcome, Teoh. Another introduction to Japanese course I am Courtney and I am a Japanese teacher. In this course, I'm going to go going over the numbers one through 99. Um, for the final project, there is going to, as always, be a final exam, which you can post your results for, as well as, um, a workbook packet that you can download. You can print it, you can work on it digitally and just post what you've got as well as ask any questions, you might have two important notes that I have. The first is that this is actually probably going to be the last in the intro to Japanese course. The reason being is that by this point, I feel like I've covered enough of the very basic fundamentals, actually, kind of get more into the meat and potatoes of the language. On with that, it is very important that I mentioned in my last course. I said that I would no longer be teaching using no Monty. Um, And for a refresher with Maggie is or are, they are the way of writing out Japanese words, but using Roman fanatics, which would be like the English alphabet. So you have Teoh, you will have to apply your skills. You've learned as far as how to read. You will have to be able to read. He, Donna and, um not really cut back on a in this course, I don't think. But the point is, I will not be using any English when I teach, except for when it's in English. Word if I'm saying something in English, so be prepared to practice your kind of recognition. If you need a refresher on the three writing systems, I do have a worksheet on my website as well as you can always feel free to check out horses 12 and three if you need a refresher. And, of course, you can always just listen to how I am pronouncing words and characters and things like that. But be prepared to challenge yourself. This course is going to be really fun, and I'm really just looking forward Teoh content that I'll be producing after this because it's gonna get We're really going to get into the Japanese language, but I feel like I've said way too much for an intro video. Thank you for taking this course. And, um, I hope you enjoy come back the next month. 2. Lesson 1: All right, so welcome, toe. Lesson one. We're going to jump straight into our numbers one through 10. So listen carefully. I will say the number twice on and after each time, I will give you about a second or two to repeat after me. Here we go. Our first number is the number one and Japanese one is 80 80 to is well, three. Son signed. The number four can be pronounced, she or young, see or young. The number five is pronounced gold. Six No good, no good. Seven can be pronounced Nana or Deep Nana or steep eight Humpty Hot nine. Cute, cute and 10 maybe Jude or Judah, Judo or jiu. So now that we've gone through the numbers one through 10 you can either start the video again and practice saying them or we can move. You can go ahead and move forward. If you feel pretty secure. The next thing you want to talk about is our special numbers. The first number which you will notice I actually didn't begin with. Maybe I should have, um is zero in Japanese there three ways to say zero. You can say they Zettel or moderate as you can see I've circled Zettel here because it is the most common. They is almost scientific. Um, you'll see that for things like temperature And Manu is the equivalent of saying, Oh, instead of zero. So you might say 501 for Oh, for, um So in Japanese you would say something like, um Gomory, CI goal, Mario or Young Mariana or something like that. However, Zettel is the most common, and it's completely okay if you say that the next is the number four which you noticed I gave you to that, um, two ways you can actually say the number 41 was she and the other was young. I've circled young in red here because it's the most common and in a way, safest option because she and Japanese can also mean death. So personally, I just steer clear of sheet because, um, when it comes to things like telling time and then bigger numbers, you're not gonna use sheet. So I find it's just a lot better to just stick with you next. Is she t which is the number seven? Um Or I said that backwards. Next is the number seven, which can be pronounced shee t or nama, ct or Nana? As you can see, I've circled Nana because, um, it's more common, as she also quite similar for can mean death. So again, it's safer. In most cases. As you're counting other things, you're going to use Nana much more than she. Uh, it's good to know both. Um, but I would focus on not not purses. Next is, uh, nine, which I did mention briefly. Can be cooped or cute. Um, first of all, who is very circumstantial when you're going to use it. Um, and I don't really hear people say when they're counting normal stuff in general. Um, but also, Coop can be in agony, which makes it a unfavorable word. Um, so as I've circled in red yet again, cute is more common. The much safer option. And finally, Jude June. So it can be Jew. Typically, when the number 10 is by itself, it's gonna be do. And then you've got the situational circumstantial jute. So for accounting, certain things like I don't know, age, for example. Um, just certain numbers ju maybe shortened to ju still has the same meaning. So that's actually it for less than one. Um, if you need Teoh, play the lesson again. Hopefully you took some time and wrote it down. Hopefully you didn't struggle too much with reading. As I've already mentioned, I will not be using any more No monkey in any of my lessons because it it's Celso counterproductive eso If you're unsure of how to read something, just listen to how I said it, um referred to your Khanna chart and if need be, go ahead and play this lesson again. So that is all for this one, and I'll see you in the next one. 3. Lesson 2: Oh, right. So welcome to lessen too. And, uh, if you just got of less than one, you know, we left off at counting from 1 to 10. So in this lesson, we're going to learn how to account above the number 10 and Japanese, I believe it or not, it is actually not that difficult, in my opinion. So, actually, we're not just gonna cover numbers. Just any numbers. About 10. We're going to go all the way up to 99. So, um yeah, let's get started. Um, our first number is that we left off. One was the number 10 which can be pronounced juked or Jew Jim or Jew. So, um, it is important to know this because now we're going to get into how to combine numbers. And, um, you are going to be using ju do Judy a lot. Um, So our first example here is the number 11. When you're combining numbers, uh, below 20 you're always going to start with Jude, June. And so the next thing you're going to do is your corns. Combine it with another number, and it's kind of like addition. So 11 is Judy. Judy G. So It's the number 10 Jude. Plus the number one itchy jury 12. Do you view Juni? 12. So how do you think you would say 13? You may want to you go back. I hope you made some notes. You may want to go back to what you just learned in the first lesson. What number? How do you say three in Japanese? That's going to be the number you're going to put here. And the combination is what's going to go here. So I'll give you a second if you haven't already to figure it out. And the answer is juice on juice, son. I get Ju is 10 and some his three, you son. 10 plus 3 13 So it goes like that all the way up to 19. Do you, Junie? Juice up. Giulio do got noticed. Young is what's used. Not she dude. Oh, could you, Nana? Not do. Do you have to do cute? So that is actually all for this lesson. It was quite short. Simple to the point. Um so practice combining numbers. Um, actually, when we get into our next lesson, you'll see that the pattern just kind of continues from here. but I wanted to not cram too much into one lesson That way you don't have to kind of go in and out of the same video. You can take your time to study. Um, I would say that from what? From lesson one up to here really shouldn't take you more than a day. Um, but, you know, everybody studies different, so I'm not judging. But, anyhoo, so that is it for this lesson, And I will see you very soon in the next one. 4. Lesson 3: Okay, so here we are, less than three. I hope that, um, you've been catching on. Hopefully, the pace hasn't been too bad. Um, so in this lesson were literally as before. We're just gonna pick up right where we left off. So in the last lesson lesson to we got up to number 19. Now, counting up from 19 is actually pretty simple. Um, the numbers do get a little limp thier, but, um, you'll see. So when we combine numbers to make 20 and above numbers 20 and above, um, we start with the number plus, Ted. Um, plus is probably maybe I should not have used. Plus, maybe I should have said times if we wanted to get mathematical. Um, so just understand that when I said when, this is plus, um, just know I mean and poor choice to put their, uh, the plus sign, but so the number and the number tick So 20 is me plus Jew, which is need you me and do need you. You add them together, not mathematically. Ad is gonna drive me nuts because I'm such a little a little row person. But you're going to just put them together. Um gosh is gonna be probably the goofiest lesson in this course. So moving on the pattern continues When you want to count to 30 or when you want to say the number 30 you take the number three and add it to added in front of the number 10 and you get Sahn Jude son Judah son Jude, that's 30. You have some and you have to sound you. So I've gone ahead and done it for you. These are all of the numbers up to number 19 said you can see the pattern. Do you need you? Sanju yawned you not she geo beyond you? No. Could you know 90 not strategic Hi t j it kage it. I also noticed that this isn't e t Jude. Um kind of reminds me how in America and the kids have the place value. Thank you Have one, Ted. It's just do that might have actually made it more confusing. So as you want Thio, of course, add numbers. You're not just going to do 10 2030 40. You're going to count more than that. And it is basically the same as the numbers 11 through 19 except you added that number in front. Um so I need you Was 20 21 is just need you. And you add itchy to the So remember Junichi was 11th. Have you put me in front of it? 21 So me, June, I need you. Right? 32 son, You have Judy and me, son. Junie. Some Junie, 43 Young dude. Son. Younggu, Some Younggu son. 55 school Do Cool. Go. Do you go? Did you go now? Um, how would you do all of these numbers? I am going to suggest that you pause the video here. Go ahead and take a moment to figure out these numbers and then resume and listen to the answers. So if you haven't already, go ahead and pause now. So I'm gonna go through each of these. The first letter a 35 found you. Bolt some juego 49 Younggu Cute young, do you? 88 How to do Hachi? How did you? Happy? 25. I need you. Go. I need you. Go 44 you owned you young You owned you young 59 gold! You kid gold! You accuse 76? No, my judo. No not you. Look. 67. Look do number. Look, June number 90 Q. Do you Q? Did you 99 to do Q kids your kids. So hopefully you got all the right answers. Be sure to follow along in the, uh, workbook, which I attached with this lesson. Um, practice, practice, practice. So we are getting up into these higher and higher numbers, and it's going to get more and more fun and interesting from here, but yes. So that is actually it for this lesson. Good luck. Keep studying gum bucked in it, and I will see you in the next lesson. 5. Lesson 4: Okay, So welcome. We have made it to lessen four. And this is where it's going to get fun because it's time for some application that, um So let's put what you've learned into some real life scenarios because besides, maybe counting on your hands here and there, you are going to need to know numbers for specific situations. So one that we're going to talk about his age in order to discuss age, you simply add site to the end of the number. Well, I say simply, but there are some exceptions. So, for example, to say, 10 years old, you just say ju east side do e site Now, right off the bat, it sounds a little strange because it's not. Do eat cheese and certain numbers are different. One years old, one year old would be east side. So any number that ends in the number one is going to end in east Site 41 young, due East Site two. Niece I three sound side for your own side five. Goal site six Hokusai seven. No, no site eight is different. Sigh How site not Hachi Site nine Que side 10. Just site. Just site. So remember I said that there were circumstances in which Jews would become do. This is one just site. So, um, an exception is actually than the way to say, 20 years old. And that is actually a Pepsi. How catchy. I don't believe you would be wrong if you said I need your site. Um, but this is a way that you will likely hear 20 years old. So here's some examples. I went through the numbers one through 10 for age, and they become important because if you're not talking about a single digit age, I mean numbers, they're still going to end in one of these digits. And that is what's going to determine how you say the age. So 21 I need you cite. I need you East site. It still has that east site, Indy. And actually, I'm noticing here. This just says fuck it should say site Forgot to add to eat there. I need you to fight 25. I need you. Go. Site. I need you. Google site 50 gold. Just site gold. Just site. Since it ends with this zero here. As you know, 50 is gold. Do because it ends with ju It changes to just sign, not go Juice I we'll do site 78. No, not do has site? No, not Juhasz site. So you have your 7 10 and eight. And because it ends with this eight, it's hus site. Not have Teesside 99 years old. Que du que side huge accused So how would you say 31 years old? I'll give you a second sound you cite found you cite How would you say 52 years old? Gold Junie Sigh Gold Junie site nine years old. This one should be easy for you Que sai que se So if you want to ask someone how old they are the phrase is now inside this call man, inside this call and to respond with your age or response you make it with a three is going to be the number with Cy at the end. And this I am number years old. Number aside, this for example. Um e Goldoni says that I am needed oxide This I need you. Looks like this. I am How old gonna let you guys figure that out? So the next thing is money. Obviously money is very important, right? Um, it's equally important as age. So you need to know how to apply your new miracle knowledge to counting money. Two signs that you will see that represent money are these two Condi both pronounced in. However, this in goes at the end of a number, whereas the other and goes up the beginning. In both cases in it's still said at the end of the number. For example, 30 yen is Sandra it here songs you in here summed you in kind of like in English you say $30. Even though the dollar sign is going to be in front, you're going to still say $30 not dollars. 30. So this is sound you in sounds. You in 30 yet 90 yen Q. Do it. Q. Did you in sink? So if you want to say I need 10 yen to buy a snack from this vending machine, how would you say 10 yet in both of these situations, I'll give you a moment. You may want to pause the video here. This sentence, both of them are pronounced the same doing Oh, we must Carnegie hunky because your day do in oh et must, if you want to ask. So how much something costs he could of this call. He could have this car and the response would be the number post in. And then this. Do in this. Now we're going to talk about phone numbers. They love on goal. Then Robin, go when you want to separate numbers you use no to indicate that there is a space between them. This doesn't only apply to phone numbers. This could be an account number. Any kind of number where you want to put You want to indicate that basically, there's a dash or space between them. These are some examples. The 1st 1 How would you say this number? How do you think you would say it? How do you that all that'll? No, you don't sound, son. No. You E T Vettel! Did you get that second number son Knee? No, son Need that auto Good. No neat! That always That'll cute young settle! You don't know no sound. Look! No! Oh go go, go meet No young go young! Cool! No e t me settle! Vettel Each found it easy. No, me some No young Oh, no! Good not did you understand? Ultimately, practice makes perfect. I say this in every single course because it's the truth. And although this may have come up as a little bit difficult for you, it's so worth it. And honestly, um oh, as you practice it, it's just gonna come to your mind. Um, I'm bake on immersion, and that is a course that I will be creating how to create an immersive environment for yourself without going to Japan. Because some of us cannot go to Japan when we want Teoh. Or, in my case, we can't move When we're ready, Teoh and you have to have you have to create opportunities to say the numbers to hear the numbers. That's ultimately what it's gonna come down to. So, uh, with that being said, um, that is going to be all for this lesson, and I will see you end the review come. But then it 6. Review: All right, so we have made it. Teoh the review. So, um, I hope that you are able to study and retains information because this is probably going to be the last intro to Japanese lesson that I'm going to make. Um, when I say the last lesson, I just mean these were more like the basic, basic, basic things we need to even get started. And now I can really kind of get into the depth of the language, the meat and potatoes. Um, so I know that I haven't been as quick to upload lessons as one would probably prefer. However, I do Ah hum believe that in the coming months, Um, at least between now and December, I do believe I should be able tow upload lessons regularly. Um, feedback would be much appreciated about preferences when it comes to the style, the formatting of the lessons. Because I am considering maybe switching from this podcast e Power point lecture type to one where it's actually a video of me. Um, it's a matter of like, would that be productive? Is it necessary those air, the kinks that have come between me and uploading faster or at least those air, the majority, uh, kings. There have been other things such as my life and my job outside of this. Um, but I just wanted to put that out there. I do intend to upload more content videos. Hopefully today, The day that I'm recording this, I also intend to film a few videos. Since I already have to film the introduction to this, including some things for my YouTube, um, and a free lesson or a lesson that non premium users will be able to watch if you're two months subscription is nearing an end. Although I will say that, um, for Japanese lessons, 15 bucks a month. I think that's what skills share costs. 15 bucks a month is pretty low to have access to these videos that I'm going to be uploading regularly. $15 a month is quite low. Um, but, anyhoo, for this review, I just want to start by going over what we have learned what we've gone over. And that is numbers. So we've talked about how to apply what you've learned to age phone numbers and money. Um, for the final project, you weren't to complete the work sheets attached with this course, actually is a kind of more like a work book. Um, post your completed work, she and any questions that you may have when I say completed, I need preferably written. But if you typed into it, that's fine, too. But poster questions and take the exam on quisling and post your results. It's not a competition here, but we can make it one also, their games on quisling that you can play. And if you're number one, feel free to post that or challenge somebody to try and beat your score. I will try my best not to insert myself into that challenge and, you know, just kind of gained like a teacher superiority complex like, Ah ha, I win because that would be fair. And I'm a fair person. Oh, but yes, please interact. Send me questions. Um, post your results. So the workbook is something that you could have been working on as you went through the lessons. Or you can wait until the end. So the final exam link here it is. You may want to write it down, screenshot it something Don't know. Type it. I don't know if you need an account to use it at all, but it is a free to use even if you make an account on. And there is an app that you can also download onto your mobile device and you can take the tests and things I can't from your from.
