About This Class

In this class, you will learn the essentials for producing your first 3D-printed project.  You do not need your own 3D printer.  The class will focus on using third parties, such as Shapeways.com, as a service provider for your prints.  You will practice choosing the best material for the product you want to create and you will practice iterative refinement to improve your product.

1. Introduction: my name's more your Patel, and this is an introductory class on three D printing and design. Three D printing is an exciting hobby because it makes available to designers a means of creating new products in small batches in a relatively short period of time for reasonable cost. In some cases, products can be made with three D printers that could not be created with conventional technologies. You don't need to purchase your own three D printer in order to create your own products. There are many service bureaus which offer three D printing services. I'll focus on using shape ways dot com as a printing service because I found their prices to be reasonable and their technical information to be clear and complete. In some cases, your local public library may offer access to three D printing equipment and software. Using the service, rather than purchasing your own equipment, reduces the time, expense effort and space required for you to get started with three D printing. It's important to understand the three D printing is a manufacturing technology. Some projects will suit three D printing and some projects will not. Three D printing is not a one size fits all solution, but rather another option that designers may consider when the developing an idea. In this class, we will learn what makes a successful project and how to take a product idea from concept to completion. 2. Picking a Project: picking of projects. I became interested in three D printing because of my interest in double edge safety razors . As I added new razors to my collection, I started to learn how they worked. I came to understand what features I lights and what features I did not like in a razor. Eventually, I decided to try my own designs. Three D printing made it possible for me to develop this hobby, which I probably could not have pursued using any other manufacturing technology. The first important point of the class is this. Have an interest in a strong understanding of the product you intend to design, understand what will make it functional and what will make it aesthetically pleasing. Study existing designs and form your own opinions about them, but also talked to others to generate fresh perspectives and ideas above all else. Designed something that you will enjoy all reference my own experiences with three D printing safety razors when it's relevant. But for the class project, we will design and print a y. Narrator a y narrator is used to introduce oxygen to wind before serving. Traditionally wine bottles air opened and left to breathe before serving. But using a Y narrator reduces the time required between opening the bottle and serving the wine to guests. Typically, you would pour wine into the device, which in turn introduces air into the fluid stream as it flows through the aerator. If you don't own a y narrator than study designs that you can find on the Web and read reviews about what people like and don't like about those designs, spend some time now browsing the Internet and developing some of your own ideas, then continue to the next video. 3. Selecting a Material: selecting a material for your project. As I mentioned earlier, three D printing is a manufacturing technology beyond the design of your product. You'll also need to study materials used in three D printing, and you'll need to select the correct material for your project. In many cases, the material and the technology used to print the material go hand in hand. So when you study material, you'll also study the printing technology and my safety. Razor designs, accuracy and precision were very important. Razor blades are a fraction of a millimeter in thickness, so it was important to me to select the material that could be printed with sufficient tolerances. Furthermore, since the razor will be exposed to soap in water, it was important to know how the material would react to those conditions. Here's a print of one of my razors, which I call the Cracking The Razor is printed using the material that shape ways. Describes as white, strong and flexible plastic. The technical name for this material is P A 22 100 shape Ways has a clear description of this material, and the process used to print with it from these and other resource is I learned that the plastic is a kind of nylon. Unlike some other kinds of nylon, it would not degrade or deformed when exposed to soap and water. This kind of nylon is printed using a process called selective laser centering abbreviated S. L s. A laser is used to melt particles of nylon together. The accuracy and precision of the process was sufficient for my design. However, since the materialise soft and we need to take extra care to make sure that it would not deformed from this spring forces created by the bending blade. On one occasion, I attempted to design and print a steampunk style safety razor. I liked the idea of printing it in steel toe, optimize the effect of the look and to improve its appeal. However, from reading the description, it was clear that the process was not as precise as the SLS process used with the P a 22 100 plastic. Nonetheless, I gave it a try. The result looked attractive, but the tolerances were poor. Pieces did not fit tightly together and a razor blade. It not sit correctly in the head of the razor. I was able to create a print with more weight and a smoother field than the prints made with the regular P 2200 material by using a material that shape ways describes as polished metallic plastic. This is created with the same kind of SLS process as the P A 22 100 material. However, particles of aluminum are mixed with the nylon particles. Furthermore, a polishing stage makes the surfaces smoother without eroding critical structures that will affect the seeding of the blade in the razor. On another occasion, I attempted to print with pl a plastic. This is a starch based plastic, which is printed by squirting the melted plastic through a nozzle head. It's similar to an inkjet printer. The material cools and solidifies, forming the final product. In this case, the printing was so imprecise so as to render the entire print completely useless to me. For our class project, we will require a material it is safe to use with foods, and that can be easily cleaned. Accuracy and precision are probably not as important to use for this project. Shape ways dot com offers printing in glazed porcelain, which fulfills these requirements. We will use this material to print our Y. Narrator Spend some time now on the Shape Ways website from the Materials Guide study, The properties and the printing process used to create porcelain products then continued to the next video. 4. Developing Your Design: developing your design as you develop your product, it will be important to identify features that you'll want your PRODUCTO have, but will also be important to understand the constraints under which you must operate. If you expect your three D print to be successful, let's consider our class project a wine aerator. I had seen some faucet designs that inspired me. I believe the designers of these products were themselves inspired by the design of Roman aqueducts. Water travels down an open channel, exposing much of the fluid to air. For my design, I would require some means of limiting the rate of flow so that a large volume of the wine can be exposed to air while flowing along an open channel. Also, from watching people use a Raiders, I noticed that some designs drip and a leak and generally make a mess when not being used. I wanted to design that would stand on its own and would not look messy when placed on a counter between uses. With these ideas, I understood the features that were important to me. Now I would need to study the constraints under which we would be printing the wine aerator I noticed that printing and porcelain was expensive, so I decided to try to minimize the size of the design so as to mitigate expenses. Since the costs of the print varies with a surface area and not the volume of the model, I was able to leave the bottom section of my design solid. This makes it heavier and harder to tip over. The Shape Ways Website has important information about the various design guidelines for each material and printing process. These are important constraints that will help to improve the probability of a successful print for porcelain. The design guidelines indicate that the print will not be very detailed or precise and that the walls should be fairly thick. The design needs to be able to stand on its own without supports. Spend some time now reviewing your design ideas and studying the design guidelines for porcelain on the Shape Ways website. Spend some time sketching out design ideas on paper and determining whether they will fit within. The design guidelines go back and forth between the creative process of imagining new shapes and the technical process of verifying that these shapes will fit within the constraints of the printing process. It's well worth taking the time to do this on paper and being pragmatic about the details. Otherwise, you risk wasting time and money unnecessarily on failed prints. When you believe that you have a viable design on paper, proceed to the next video. 5. Selecting Modeling Software: selecting modeling software. In order to take your design from paper to a computer model, you'll need to select the software that you're going to use. Assess your own comfort level with using computers and determine what you're good at in order to select a software package that plays to your strengths. I worked as an artist, but I have degrees in engineering, so using technical software is not a problem for me. Furthermore, since my safety razor designs require high degree of accuracy and precision, I focused on finding a CAD software from my projects. Cat is an abbreviation for computer aided design, and it allows you to design a product with very precise specifications. Here's a selection of open source or free software that are suited for those with technical aptitudes. I find extrusion, XYZ and lost be very useful in my designs. So it was important to me to find a software that does thes well because I'm also computer savvy and run a bunch to limits on some of my computers. I decided that Free cad was a good choice for me. If you're better, it's sculpting than you are with math. Then you might consider a more organic a modelling package. Here's some examples of free software that you could download and install on your own computer. After you get a sense of where you might want to start, then do your own Internet searches to find other options that might work for you. You aren't going to know what will work best for you before you download a few and try them out. Evaluate different software by practicing building simpler version of the model that you want to create. This will likely give you a good sense of what kind of experience you'll have building the more complex version of your model. Don't forget that you can sometimes find nice tutorials for your software. It sites such a skill share or YouTube. These will help you learn software more quickly and might help you over certain hurdles along the way. I need to refer to tutorials almost every time I want to apply a feature of free cad that I have not used previously. Take some time now to browse the Internet and find some software choices that look appealing to you. Download these and pick one for your y narrator project. It will take some time to learn the software and to build your model based on your existing design on paper, proceed to the next video when you have done this. 6. Uploading Your Design for Printing: uploading your design for printing. Once you've completed a computer model of your design, you'll need to export a file in a format that is compatible with your three D printing service provider. Shape Ways accepts files in the STL format. So this is what I used for my prints. How you export your file is specific to the software you're using. But you may need to adjust quality settings to make sure that smooth surfaces in your design are printed as smooth surfaces. If you're shapes are not approximated with sufficient detail, then surfaces that you intended to be smooth could appear faceted, like the surface of a diamond toe. Upload your design to shape ways. You'll need an account from the log in page of your account. You'll be able to upload your model file to create a new product. Shape Ways Computers will review your model and will automatically provide you with information about your model as it becomes available. Usually in a few minutes, all the information will be available. This includes basic geometric details such as dimensions, volume and service area. But shape ways also verifies that your model fits the design requirements for printing with various materials. You can see what your design will cost when printed in each material. If your model will fail to print in a particular material, you'll be able to investigate further. In some cases, Shape Way software may be able to apply fixes to your model if you want it to do so. At this stage, you can order a print for yourself by adding the model with the correct material selection to your shopping card and proceeding to check out. However, you may also make the design available to others. Under the selling tab of the model page, Fill out the information, decide what kind of commission you believes fair to charge for your design. Others will be able to find your design. It shape ways, and you'll receive a commission. When people order prints of your design, spend some time now toe upload your wine area to design and verify that it passes all the automatic checks for successful printing and porcelain. Proceed to the last video for closing thoughts when you're ready 7. Closing Thoughts: closing thoughts. At this point, you've completed the design of a Y narrator and printed it in porcelain. You've learned about materials you've learned modeling software, and you've experienced using a service bureau to print your designs.
