PATTERNS in PHOTOSHOP NEW DOCUMENT: go to the top of your many bar to file and choose new. A dialog box will appear for the purpose of what we're doing. We're not going to name the file, but we will be choosing the size by entering the with height and resolution. We're going to make our document with three inches and the height three inches with a resolution of 300 dp i as a general rule thumb. If you're using your file for Web set the resolution at sending to DP I for print. Set it at 300 dp I or higher click OK, our file will appear on the screen ready for us to work on. 4. PATTERNS in PHOTOSHOP BACKGROUND COLOR: the first thing I'm going to do is choose a color for my pattern background. Go to your menu at the top of your screen. Find layer, choose new Phil layer and chew solid color. A new layer dialog box will appear hit. Okay, a color picker dialog box will appear. You can hover over the color box and click your mouse or track pad to choose a color. Or if you know exactly what color you'd like, you can enter the hex code number here. Click on that window and your full set of brushes will appear. School to find the one you'd like to use. We suggest if you're going to use your pattern for printing that you work with a high quality Photoshopped brush. I am choosing the horse, which is just under 1000 pixels wide. Once you have located your chosen brush double click to select. 6. PATTERNS in PHOTOSHOP BRUSH PLACEMENT + COLOR: If you hover over your document, you should see an outline of your brush artwork. If you don't check to make sure your caps lock is unlocked, you can use your bracket keys on your keyboard to scale your brush. I think this is a good size. Try to position your our work as close to the center as possible. It doesn't have to be perfectly centered. Leave extra space around the edges there. Our work is not too close together on your finish pattern. Use your mouth or track pad to position with brush. Once you have found the desired location, click once to change the color of your brush. Double click on your brush layer in your layers palette. This will bring up the layer styles Dialog box, Go to color overlay and click to choose. This will bring up the colored rectangle. Double click, and it will bring up the color picker dialog box. Click and choose your new color or input. Your custom hex code will be using four B three F 34 hit. Okay, now we're ready for the magic to happen. 7. PATTERNS in PHOTOSHOP MAKE YOUR PATTERN : find edit on your menu bar. Click scroll down to define pattern. Name your new pattern and hit OK To see our new pattern in action, you will want to create a new document. Find file, choose new name your file and choose your dimensions that you want your finish pattern to be I'm going to choose eight inches by eight inches with the resolution of 300 dp I so I can print out right away. Hit. Okay, now let's see our pattern. Go to layer New Phil layer pattern. A new layer dialog box will appear hit. Okay, your pattern appears Have pattern field dialog box will come up. You can scale your pattern by clicking the arrow to the right of the numbers. You can also manually input the numbers Use of slider to scale to the left. It makes it smaller to the right makes it larger. You can also adjust the position of the pattern by clicking and dragging over the image. When you're happy with the look hit. Okay, You have successfully created your first repeatable and scalable pattern. Congratulations. In the bonus video, we will teach you how to create a seamless tile. Then you can print fabric wrapping paper, wallpaper, etcetera. There are a ton of applications 8. BONUS SEAMLESS PATTERN LESSON: If you want to take your pattern making to the next level and add another element of interest, you will want to know how to create a seamless tile. This means your pattern will not have any lines or gaps, and we'll have a seamless repeat. This is what a child but is not seamless looks like. And this is what a seamless tile looks like much better. So let's get started. Go to file. New A dialog box will appear. Choose the size of your tile. We're going to make ours two inches wide by two inches high. Resolution 300 dp I Since we plan on printing hit okay, we will basically be doing the same steps we did in the previous videos. To create a pattern. I'm going to add a color to my background. Feel free to skip this step. If you want your background to be white, go to layer new Phil layer. Solid color. We have pre chosen a color hex code F four e c e a quick. Okay, now let's create a new layer for our brush. Go to layer new layer and click. I'm going to need this layer horse and then I'll go to my brushes to find and select the horse. Now I will stamp my horse as close to the center of my document as possible. Since I want my horse to be more of a dark chestnut brown, I'll change the color to change the color. I will double click on the horse layer and my layer style dialog box will appear. Go to color overlay. Click once, and the color overlay box will appear to the right of the blend mode. There is a colored rectangle, double click on it, and your color picker will appear. You can either choose your own color with a dropper, or you can add your own hex code, which I'm going to do now. Hex code 342 de to seven it. Okay, now we're ready to start. Creating are seamless tile. This may seem a bit daunting at first, but follow along. We promised to make this as easy and as painless as possible. First, we're going to need to find the pixel, width and height of our image go to image image size. Our tile is 600 pixels by 600 pixels. Make a note of the size of your document. Next we'll go to filter other offset. We're going to do some quick math here. We'll divide our pixel with and height in half and enter those numbers. Easy. 600 divided by two, is 300. So we will enter 300 into horizontal and 300 to the vertical, and make sure to have wraparound selected. Next. We'll hit. Okay, We have now created a seamless tile, since we want to make our pattern a little more interesting. By adding another element, we are going to use the arrow Photoshopped brush. This is included in the downloads. We want to add this aero layer right above the color background layer. You'll see why in a second to do this, make sure your color layer is highlighted by clicking on it. Once go to layer new layer, name it arrow and hit. OK, now I will go to my brushes and find my arrow. I'm going to try to place it as close to the center. It's possible this is important because we don't want our new element anywhere near the sides at all. I'm going to quickly change the color like we did with the horse hex code six E six 864 Click OK. Once we have the new element in place, we will want to ensure it's actually centered. To do this, you will click on the air layer and make sure it's highlighted. Then hold down your shift key and click your color layer and your background layer. This will make all three layers highlighted. Go to layer a line and choose vertical centers. We're going to go through these exact steps again, but this time will choose horizontal centers. Your element should now be centered, and it's time to test your tile. So go to edit defined pattern. Feel free to name your pattern and hit OK, now, to test this pattern, I'm just going to create a document of any size I will do at 12 inch by 12 inch and 300 resolution. Click OK to see your new pattern, go to Layer New Phil layer pattern and we'll, uh, you have just created a seamless tile that could be sent off to print fabric wallpaper, gift wrap, etcetera. And that's all there is to it. We can't wait to see what you guys create
