1. What is Innovation: Let's talk about innovation Today. We're going to look at what innovation is and what it isn't before moving on to look, it's and brief examples and helping you think about innovation in your work. Okay, so what is innovation? Maybe many definitions. But let's keep it simple and go with the process of turning creative ideas into something that generates. So what is innovation, not innovation can often be confused with invention or creativity. Let's be clear about what these other two turns represent. Invention is the creation of something new. As a result of study or experimentation, it can apply to processes methods of physical devices. Importantly, invention might be part of innovation, but it would be possible to invent something which didn't necessarily add value. And there in lies. The creativity in the context of an organization is the ability to generate recognize alternative approaches to problem solving and communication. It could be described as behavior that enables benching as before. This could be part of innovation. Innovation is the big picture, so to reiterate, invention and creativity may help stimulate innovation. But just so we're clear, here's a reminder of our definition. Innovation is the process of turning creative ideas into something that generates done back to innovation. It all starts with dares on. It's less important where the idea came from. More about what happens to it. These ideas need to be evaluated for that sounds. So, firstly, is it desirable? Is there an appetite? Secondly, is it viable? So is it possible and something that can be brought to life? Finally, is your aunt if feasible? This is a pragmatic view of whether your idea provides a benefit on one of the benefit is, for example, cost efficient and legal. Innovation occurs in the sweet spot where these three So what does innovation actually look like? Here are some examples of the key types of innovation. It's easy to a shoe. The obvious examples of this are technology related. Innovation is much wider than this. Let's move on now to organizational innovation. This could be about developing the culture of the organisation or simply changing where people work. Examples range from outsourcing staff on different working patterns, such as job sharing to home working. More commonly, organizational innovation may get back demanding and empowering staff to change and improve the way things are done or removing hierarchies, which has been a barrier to innovation. Innovation as a Process: one of the things that people sometimes find most unfamiliar about innovation, as opposed to simply change. I want to give you some tips and techniques to help you focus on innovation or if you prefer, I want to help you channel your innovation. By the way, let's move on to look at some simple tactics to help overcoming barriers to making progress . Remember, everything you see here is just a very until you put it into practice back in the real world. So in three or four minutes time, I'd like you to be thinking about how you can apply this in your world and take some big strides towards becoming an innovation ninja. Firstly, I'd like to look at establishing scope. This is really about taking a pragmatic view of issues by considering them from different perspectives. Have you ever had an issue that turned out to be something completely different to your assumptions or initial prognosis? Maybe it was a bigger or smaller than your thoughts. Maybe it was more than one problem. Maybe somebody else even considered it an opportunity. This is why it's really important to establish will be called the scope of the problem. We do this by describing the problem in different ways, which in turn provides more clarity about potential solutions and out. Let's take an example that could be true in your world. I want my business to make moment. Statements like these are often the starting point of resolving issues, but arguably this one is ill defined. Somebody wants that. Is it a cloud or is it sheep? So now that you've got your scope established, I'd like to give you some food for thought around questions that these techniques will help you to explore an issue by phrasing appropriate and powerful questions. Okay, so let's start with broadened and narrow here. Your consider your current situation, then look at the problem from a broader perspective. Are there any broader benefits that flow from using resources and effort to tackle your specific problem? If the problem feels too big, look at what might stop your resolving the current problem and consider how these narrower issues might correct. So let's not focus briefly on wording. I can make this really simple. Remember that generic wording can help you identify solutions outside of the norm. Specific wording will often lead to more solution. Lighter outcomes. My advice here is to use both of these times a question to ensure that you don't miss out on any winning ideas. Finally, let's not forget. Everything we've covered here is about establishing the right starting points for overcoming the issue. This should be more than one, and I'd recommend to try and get six to fully understand whether potential solutions may lie once again resist the temptation to solve the problem just yet, you're still establishing options for direction of Trump. Where this model comes into its own is by considering what is our strategy? Is an organization on how does that affect the pipeline? So how do we know the ideas were generating are linked to that strategy and secondly, the model looks at what is the organizational culture? So what's the environment in which we're trying to implement these ideas? How will people react on what skills do we have to make this happen? So in summary, the innovative organization model allows us to look not just at the pipeline of ideas, generation evaluation and implementation, but also how do these fit in with the organisational strategy and its cultural values? 6. The Innovation Journey: Let's take a journey through innovation. This video is about embedding and encouraging innovation in an organization. So why innovation is needed, what we mean by innovation. What of the structures and activities that we could put in place to make innovation sustainable and repeatable? Starting point for innovation is often an aspiration to do things better. Well, possibly just a problem that may lead you to the same outcome. So why innovates? Businesses innovate in many ways, but usually in order to deliver value to their customers and to make them better, cheaper and faster than the competition. So these are very compelling reasons to start with gin. So what does innovation means to us? It means coming up with great ideas, either big or small, that make us better at what we do on making them happen. These could be game changers ideas, which really challenged the norm or incremental changes that just help us to do the everyday things a little better. Leading innovation. The role of the leader is to raise awareness to the need to innovate, give people the skills they need, training where necessary, create time for innovation and give access to with the resources such as money, human resource for information, but also to create reference materials to guide and support also set the agenda for innovation through quarterly challenges. Keeping those great ideas coming is critical, and here's how to maintain their appetites for innovation. So the five are questioning, observing, experimenting, networking and associate. I'm gonna walk through each of these for you to understand that in more detail. So our first behavior is questioning people who are inhibited. Come up with more questions and others. They question the status quo. How the world works on the ask more questions. Why, like a small child looking at the world, Why is it like this? Why don't wait? Why is it not like that? It's these types of questions that really help them to. The second factor is observing gang. This is a behavior that, Christensen asserts, is much more prevalent in successful innovators. They observed macro trends, so how the world is changing things like population changes, social media changes and have their customers and clients behaving would, on a minute level on a day to day basis that will look at their peripheral customers. So those who are doing things in different ways, maybe extreme users of their products and services. Observing, experimenting, networking and associating. If you can build these within your team and for yourself, this could encourage and develop innovative practices and the environment where innovation can flourish in your organization. So how can you use these in your world? 8. Sustaining Innovation: Let's talk about sustaining innovation to ensure that innovation is sustained within an organization. There are four key stages which need to be implemented successfully. Firstly, invest in innovation. This is crucial. As without investment, innovation won't flourish. A number of different resources are needed, including time, money and people. Make sure people have time set aside to think about new things and explore ideas. Also, a small amount of money or resources just to enable Trying an idea out can pay for itself several times over. The aim of the investment in innovation is to create a culture where animation will try secondly, manage innovation to capitalize on new ideas and inventions, they need to be managed effectively. An important element of this is to ensure that the tools and techniques that are used are the best of most appropriate for the business environment. These are key to keeping innovation coming.
