Infrared RAW Photography Post Processing in Photoshop CC 2021

In normal practice our eyes see the world around us and we accept it for what it is. Roses are red The sky is blue, and grass is green. This because our eyes can only see certain wavelengths of light. We are only sensitive to the so called ‘visible spectrum’. Infrared (IR) light is invisible to our eyes but our digital cameras are capable of recording it, by blocking all visible light, allowing just infrared to be captured.

A commonly asked question is just how you process these images to their best effect? Well, this class i will show you a couple of the most common methods.

1. Infrared Raw Image Processing Intro: And normal practice, our eyes see the world around us and we accept it for what it is. Roses are red, the sky is blue and the grass is green. This because our eyes can only see certain wavelengths of flights, are only sensitive to the so-called visible spectrum. Infrared lights is invisible to our eyes, but I will digital cameras are capable if we coordinates. A commonly asked question is just how you process these images to their best effects. The goal here is not to make the image look real, but just to processes to make it look beautiful. Well, in this class, I will show you a couple of the most used techniques I used to process these images. See you inside the class. 2. Download DNG Profile: Okay guys, so much it's a come over here to Google. And then just look for a DNG profile editor. And then you can click on this results right here. Make sure we are going to the Adobe website. Ok, and a here. I want you to look for DNG profile editor, September 2012, okay? If you have a Mac, you click on Mac. If you have a Windows, you click on Windows, then you don't know the software and install it. Okay, it's pretty much straight forward. And also, we gotta need Photoshop and bridge. Okay guys. We need Bridge. 3. Working in Bridge, Camera Raw and DNG profile editor: Okay, now let's go ahead guys and open bridge. Okay. And I want you to go ahead and sign right here, the folder that you downloaded from this course projects. So as you can see here, we have two infrared role images. The first one right here was shot using a Pentax camera. And this one right here with shots using a nickel the camera. Okay. And how do I know this is that if we come over here to meta data and you scroll down to see the information about the pictures. You can see the name of the cameras, Ri hair and the model and everything. Ok. So let's start with this one right here. As you can see, we have two images. Now what I wanna do for this course and the other one I wanted to do for the exercise, okay, lets, I will still do what's for the course, but I wanted to do the exercise first and then watch the video later. Now, let's start with this one. And what I'm gonna do here is right-click on the image. And the first thing to do is to open the image and camera roll. Okay, you, once you have something like this, you want to come over here to basic ok temperature and bring the temperature all the way down to 2 thousand. Now if I bring it down, we can see that the maximum we can go as 2 thousand. And if you are processing infrared images, you want to go lower than 2 thousand, okay, that's when the DNG profiles comes in handy. It's going to help us go lower than 2 thousand and temperature. Once you've finished, click right here. Okay, you can give it a name to your file. For example, I give it's low temperatures or 2 thousand. Make sure you save it as digital negative image, okay, the NG formats. And for the G peak preview, believe it's full sizer continued to medium size, doesn't matter. Click save. I don't click Done, Click council. Okay, because I want to keep the original file right here. Very important skies. Now, I can come over here to my search bar in Windows and type DNG profile and selects the app that I just downloaded and installed on Ron. Go to File, Open the PNG image and now trues the image with the low temperature that we just saved from camera row. Now if you think in why we're not seeing the other original image and we see in this infrared image, because the extension of this infrared image is the.md file by default from the camera Pentax. Okay? Because these cameras can save pictures and DNG role formats while the Nikon's camera, Kant's. Okay, so click on this and then open. Once you open, you want to come over here to color matrices. And then you see whites balanced calibration, ranked temperature all the way to minus $0.100, all the way to 100. If you think in all you didn't make much difference but not Ebola. You just waits until we explored this and to camera roll and you will see the difference once you finish file and then export the profile, which is a Nick and D 700 camera. You don't have to keep onsite as old recipe. You can generate this through untitled bids on whatever. The d, just like this. And safe. I can close this now. No need for it. Don't save. Because we have it's right here. Now. I'm going to go ahead and go back to the original infrared dots, NFP extension image. Right-click and open and camera roll. We don't need this one because this one was just used for the DNG profile editor. So I'm sure that you guessed by now that we need to imports or installed app profile that we just created and DNG editor and to camera roll. And the way to do its end is new version of the program is quite complicated from the previous version. Whereas in the previous version you could just come over here to profiles and then browse, and then you can import any profile as you have on your computer. But now with this new version of camera roll, we have to do which manually. So I'm on Windows, right? And now I'm going to show you how to do it's n or windows. And then for people using Mac, I'm gonna leave a path and post-production for you guys hopefully is the right one. Otherwise, you can just look for whatever I'm looking for right here on line though. And I hope it's going to be the rights paths because I don't have a Mac right here. And otherwise, if it not RightPathing and just look for camera row profiles on your Mac phenomena to counsel, reduce this window. Then just open any documents or Mike impure and go to my C drive. Look for users. The name of the user of this computer as sharpie. I wanted to write down Chapin, That's our choppy. And then look for App Data. If you guys cannot see updates I owe, you may want to come over here to view and then make sure you check Haydn items, okay, if you're on Windows, Roman, Adobe. And then look for camera roll, and then camera profiles. And then open the folder where you saved the profile, DCP extension, control command C to copy and Control Command V. It's based here, just like this guy is. Okay. I know it's a long paths bots It is what it is. Go back to bridge, go back to this image right click open and camera roll. And now I'm gonna come over here to profile, browse. And then look for profiles right here, and then click on this one. Okay? And as you can see right here, the image looks sort of yellowish. Brownish goes, it looks good. It looks better than it was before we use the energy profile. The next step would be to balance your Weiss. Ok, and we want to do it manually, guys. Okay? We cannot use automatic whites balance for this one. And why you balance your white is that you keep an eye on this histogram. And you once the RGB colors to now be separated anymore, you want it to be one whites color. So we're gonna do this using the temperature and its hence on with distant zone here. And then I can move this tense. There. We go almost there. You come back here. Then here. Here we go. Alright. Okay, and this is how you perfectly and manually whites balanced your colors guys, using the histogram, of course, and temperature and sands. And once it like this, we're going to go ahead now and open the file and Photoshop. 4. Exporting to Photoshop CC: Okay guys now attempt to call the big boy Photoshop. Ok, so click on open. And then I want to open as a copy because I want to keep my original file. I want to keep Netscape my original file. One photo shop is open. The first thing I do is full-screen. It's going to zoom in little bits. So the first thing I do want to open Photoshop as control command J two duplicated the image and then hide the original image, okay, working non-destructively. So the first thing to do here is to add adjustment and hue, saturation layer, whatever. And then what you wanna do is click right here where it says Master. We go back to blue and then bring the saturation all the way down. And then cyan and saturation all the way down. Okay, bringing the blues and the signs down. Well, give it more of that goes, see, look, I'm looking for and that you should look for also when possess an infrared images. Because as I said earlier, the idea of working with infrared images as secretes a beautiful, surrealistic, surrealistic image. Okay? And now what we trying to do right here. So once you do this, you can click on this button right here. And then we look for channel mixer. And right now, what I'm gonna do is give you some values that will work with pretty much all the infrared images that you're going to be processing. And then you can go ahead and experiment with different things to create different looks. Alright? So the first thing I'm gonna do is make sure I have right here on the output channel and then bring this thing right here to 0 instead of 100. And blues, I'm going to make it 100. And then I'm going to go to blue and do the same thing. Blew 0, read 100. Okay, you can see now the sky's blue. Once you do this, you can just close this. And the next layer will add as the same one as you added earlier, hue saturation. And what I'm gonna do here is slightly move the hue. So are the blue. Ok, so accentuates the look in the sky. Okay. Now I do this with all images, pretty much all images that includes nature. Of course you don't have to do the same thing with the same images. You can adjust stuff and try different stuff. You know, being creative has no limit, guys. And then finally, we can add levels, you know, for some more drama. Baby mama. When I bring this one, not this one. I'm going to bring this one right here to the right. And this one right here, the light to the left, just sort of a bits like this, and then maybe more on the block. Here we go. Just like this guy's just like this. Now you know how to process infrared images. Okay, cool. And if you want, as I said earlier, can experiments with the channel mixer. So if I hide this channel mixer and then add another channel mixer, like this, you can experiment with different stuff. But you see what we can do. I can bring, I don't know, the red down like this and maybe add some clues and see why we like like there isn't the neglect of blue. And you see if I do not mean that the candidates at 0. And it just like this and you know, I'm just tweaking these values to create special, beautiful look. Baby, I like this one, you know, kind of looks like that game from the Xbox. Dark Souls, yeah. Sort of. Okay, so that was pretty much all guys. Now you know how to process infrared raw images. I want you now to go and do the exercise, okay, and on the next lecture, I'm going to go ahead and do quickly the other row image I provided you. But I invite you to make the exercise first before jumping in and watch in the next lecture. 5. Final Exercise: Okay guys, so I hope you did the exercise before watching this video right now because it is how you learn by doing and by repetition. And now let's do this one right here, bro, image with dot e and g extension. Same thing. Now I'm gonna go quickly. I'm not going to explain every step as it did earlier because it's pretty much the same thing. Now right-click here. Camera roll, temperature down. Save as DN G, save. Council. Open, the NG profile. Helps. Ang profile. I'll open the NG. Selects the swarm column matrices, rank temperature down, and ten. File exports Pentax, ESD. Okay, close this down. So thank you. Right-click on the original image, open and camera roll again. Now go to File Control Command C. Look for my brows and I use those profile. Now, why does balance? Just like this? And now open a copy in Photoshop. Curlies go. Who's Qin? Let me zoom. Anecdotes. Says go duplicate background. I click here on histogram. And now let's add hue saturation. Same, same. I wanted the blues down. Science. Okay. Hopes. Channel mixer. Now read, it's kinda be 0, blue, it's going to be $100. Thanks into blue here, 100 down here, or one to 0. Okay? Doing some professional. Or can photoshop. Hue saturation, hue saturation. Who go bring the blue's a little bit. And now we can see right here is an F. I want to bring the Blues up. It doesn't give much effects to the picture. Because as I told you guys, every picture is going to be difference. It show with delight soon. Bring it here. And the now we'll reserve levels, levels. And just bring this dark here. And just bring this down a little bit here, just a little bit because we want small doctrine wide. So we go and here we go guys, every picture is going to be difference. And in this one, you can certainly go back to channel mixer. And really, you know, play with those to create a special, you know. Okay, so these tutorials serves as guides, Okay? So you do this and this and this and this. And then when it comes to the values is going to be a big difference from each picture, okay, it's going towards grids with some pictures. Pictures like this as you can see when we added the hue saturation on the second time, we bring this ladder to the blue. It doesn't give much effect as in the previous one. It depends on a picture about the procedure as pretty much the same. Okay. The procedure is pretty much the same. It's only a question of trying different values. If the values that I show you don't give you much results, model results that you desire. You can play with contrast. And here we go. I think I'm just gonna leave it like this. Okay, you can try monochromatic If You Want. It looks good as well. And yeah, that's pretty much all guys. Thank you for watching.
