The lessons in setting up a file, working with images, working with text, and exporting your file will give you the tools and techniques you need to re-create the magazine spread of your choice. 1. HELLO + let's get started!: Hi, I'm and admire Prada Voyage, a welcome to in design and 30 Minutes, an easily digestible class designed to be taken during a lunch break. I want you to build in design skills will walk through setting up a file, working with images, working with text and finally exporting your file and packaging it. We're going to be for a class project recreating your favorite magazine spread. So to start either scanner, photograph your spread and share it in her project board. The project boards are a great way to share your progress, ask questions and stay motivated and work with each other. Also, I love to share. Resource is So in addition to the class resource is don't forget to check the discussion board, as will be set sharing updates in different tips and tools that didn't make it into the video. So happy designing 2. Navigating InDesign + setting up your file: So here we are in adobe in design. Just so you know, I'm working from version six. Adobe has moved on to C. C or Creative Cloud for this class. It doesn't matter which version you're working in. It all is very similar. Just realized that one day somebody sentence you a new file and you're working in an older version. You're not going to be able to open it. But a newer version of in design you can open anything. Okay, so let's go over to the right. These heirarchy pallets. If you don't see these right now, go ahead and go toe window and work space. There's some defaults here or you can select and create your own. Also, you can always go to the window and click, um, to get something to appear. So pages disappeared. I can toggle it in and out. So over to the left is the other key pallets. It will likely look long and skinny when you see it again. I like to use this double arrow toggle toe. Pop it out. I like to across its how I learned in design, and it's just easier to see, in my opinion, on the top and the left. You have rulers. If it's not the correct in ah unit, go ahead and hit control. Click and you can choose Ah, whichever unit and you can do it for both sides. Ah, you can create guides for your document by dragging down. If you hit command, the guide will extend beyond the pace board on both ways. If you want to get rid of a guide, you can click and delete. If, for some reason don't see the rulers at all, go ahead and go interview. There's hide rulers there or you can show them, so just toggle back and forth. Also interview. You can see grids and guides in designers really smart. In the new versions, images act like magnets. If that annoys, you can turn off snapped guides. Baseline grid is great if you're working with type very heavyset, like a magazine spread. So you can also turn that on on the future. Just to, you know, deal displayed rooms performance. If an image looks low resolution, but you know you have embedded a high resolution, are not embedded but linked to ah, high quality image. Click the box and go ahead and go to view display performance. Make sure high quality display is turned on so you can also use the right click control click um, option once the images highlighted to get that menu as well. So let's go ahead and click on file new documents. So now it's time to get working on your documents. So for me, the default is letter, but I know I have accustomed size line is 6.5 inches. Um, and you can type in whatever units, um, you are working in our measuring, so that's a really nice feature. And just, you know, I'm using commas instead of periods because I have, uh my computer is set to a French system, so orientation going to keep it to portrait. But you can quick landscape if you want columns. That's where you create them. Margins on gonna keep facing pages clicked. I'm gonna go ahead and just have one page for now, but you can always hit multiple pages there. Hit. Okay, if for some reason you need to change something, the size was wrong. You can go filed documents set up to change it there. Soto ad pages. The easiest way um, is just a click and drag, so it's adding facing pages, pages six and seven. If you want to get rid of them, you can drag them down to the bottom right into the trash can. So as I scroll over the trash can says delete selected pages, it tells you what it's doing. You go the top right downward toggle and saying certain pages. So if you are working on 100 page book, you can go ahead and create all those pages right now and tell them where in the document you want them to go or you can add them one by one as you're working. So just added 100 pages there that I probably don't need. Um, anyway, so that pretty much gets us through most everything. I will show you that Master Pages air here. This is great. If you're working with a temple, did documents and you don't want to recreate the spread every time. Um, you can drag them down or drag over and makes more sense when there's information on the page. Content on the page Command shift click is the override tool. I'll share more Resource is, but in this lesson, we're not going to be covering master pages. So if you haven't click selected your documents that you want to recreate for this class, go ahead and do that. I'm going to be working with a spread from Paris Worldwide, a free airport magazine from Paris airports. It's online if you wanna look at the digital version. I went ahead and just took a quick iPhone photos, so that's what they will be working with. Go ahead and select your magazine. I will start. It's the discussion board and share the length to the magazine I used, and please feel free to share some links there as well. 3. Images, Images, Images : So here we are ready to work with images and images really important because it is becoming the template for our example and practice for this project. So the way you get images is go under file, place or command D and in design is great because it's very similar to photo shop and illustrator Fuse the two. But just be aware that the command de shortcuts does not work the same for both for all three programs. So I've selected my image. I'm in the Mac here, and this is a view, so I like to be able to see the preview there. Um, you don't really have to have these selected at the bottom show. Import options is good if you're working for the PdF in design is great because you can insert J pegs, tiffs, PNG ai files. Um, uh, anything and but PdF. And you could even insert multiple pages. The pdf and your your cursor will be loaded with multiple pages, but you need to have show import options selected so that it will let you choose those pages. But it's a really great way to insert different file types. So when I hadn't said open. And here is my cursor that I'm moving around with this lovely ghosted back image of one page image of the spread that I scanned in. So they're different ways to deal with the images, but this We just want to head to file places that loaded the cursor so I could click and drag a box here. But I'm not going. Well, I just did. I undo. But because I already set up, I took the time to set my document properly, starting to just click and drop. And the image fits perfectly in that page because it's the right size. So that's one way to deal with things and then changed preview muted mode. I'll show you that in one second, but, um, rectangle frame tool going to go ahead and draw a frame smaller than we need, and you really can choose whatever citation shape he wants. So when it's the blue box with X in the middle, then that is a box that you can insert an image in to replace an image file place images. I know that the second page of this spread is the Grand Hall image. One. See their three archways in the stairway and notice. When I say open shows up there, I'm missing some of the image because this frame is smaller than the actual image here. So, um, this is all great, and I am going to show you now. I guess we're still in the Black Arrow, which is V when you over loud and we'll get to the other one a second. So here. This is really bothering. You can drag down. Just kind of clean it up. Um, you know, you can really crop like this, but for layout, it doesn't make sense for a photo. Maybe, um, and, yeah, there. Different ways. You can do that. Here, here, we can again drag this out on here. So the image isn't showing up there, but showing at the bottom. So I think the images kind of hanging out out here. So here the image didn't load to the top left corner, but we can easily move it. And instead of moving the blocks like this, we're going to go ahead and have the white, um, direct selection arrow. Um, which a short cut is a It's not showing up right now. There we go. So here. When you roll over, scroll over the image, it goes from the white arrow to a hand. So I'm gonna go ahead and click and hold, and you can see the part where it's ghosted. And so that's the part. That's, um, outside the image there. It's essentially cropping the image. So you don't have to go into photo shop or anything else toe crop, an image you can just holding. Click. So you just have to hold for a second. Um, so there we go. I'm gonna go back to the Black Arrow. Andi, I want this page to be lining up nice. This box is kind of out of control. So good here. But actually, because this is a print magazine, enough full plage bleed. I want to bring the box a little bit over subs. If it's, um if it's a digital magazine, it doesn't matter. So here. I'm gonna go back to the white Arrow on. I'm gonna hold command shift, Teoh, Enlarge it proportionately. So it goes like this. There is long I'm gonna show you what to never dio so Never squish an image like that. It's a red flag that it's a very unprofessional job. And Teoh not take you seriously as a designer. So always shift command and change proportionately. So, um, if the image is smaller here, um, I can go up to object fitting content proportionally. Malala It fits fits there as well. So, um, the there we got rid of the bleed, which I'm going to go ahead and make the image a little bit too big again over the edges, so you can see. So right now we are looking at the pace board. So we see all the margin and different mark ups and lines, but in the bottom left here we have the normal view. And if you hit W when you're not in the text tool, you switch between. So whatever you're clicked on this highlighted, but you see a very clean view of what we're looking at. Um, so that's quite nice. So I could draw another little blocks. This is not part of our layouts. Um, but here you see, And if I w, the X is gonna be here, so get out of that just and then command D for file place to put the red chairs in here and this is another image Eso again. I can drag and drop. Um, there's no the image doesn't go down here. That's the only reason it's blank down there. So the other tool to know about is that you have, um, click on the right hand image to bring that Teoh. I'm gonna work with that image and I'm gonna say transform, and I'm going to say, sent to backers and backwards lives actually need to bring it forward. Arrange bring to front toe, hide this so you can deal with different layers. But the other thing to know is over in the effects palette over on the right. And if you don't see that, go under the window, um, up at the top window effects and it will pop out so you can change the opacity here. But your image does have to be selected so we'll help make sure what What I'm trying to show you. There we go. You do have I like using multiple I a lot when I worked for architects. This is my secret tool for being able to trace shapes for rooms and yes, so you have a bunch of different things you can play with. But the main thing to remember is that images are not embedded in in design like they are and say word or power points. So all the images are linked. So if you save an image to your desktop and you move it, it's not gonna move with your project on. And if you rename an image after you've linked it in your documents, it's going to become unlinked because the document doesn't know that you want to keep it. So basically the clicked image here it's clicked here, Um, and then if you need to re link it, you can click down on the left if I wanted to replace it and maybe try this ballerina image I can open and you could test out the layout like that. But you need to make sure that the images are linked and at the very end of the lesson, will patch it package the documents. So that means that all the fonts and the images, um, and the in design file itself are getting a group together so they're always together. But links are really important. If you ever see a red error message, that means the images unlinked in your final document. It's gonna look pixelated, Um, and so you really need to search for the image and find it The edit original tool down in the bottom. Right. Um, if your computer set up correctly, it should open in photo shop. So if you need to do any different adjustments other than cropping, if you need to change the levels or contrast, you can easily edit the original here. So those are images, lots of things you can do with them. Once you get a hang of it, it's really easy. And like it said, there are multiple ways of dealing with the so find practice and figure out what you enjoy most and what really works for you. 4. Text in InDesign: So now it's time to dive straight into typography, so the type tool you'll use a ton. It's the tea over on the left, and it works in frames and boxes, just like with images. So I'm right portfolio here. There's a handy tool sewing the highlight. The text to go type. Andi lets the under change case going to go ahead and change that toe. Uppercase change Lower case title case and stays Super Super Super handy Tool. Um, spell check is a good idea in design. It's under edit but caught that portfolio going to go ahead in the top menu. I'll switch it to character format controls. I know changes to universe so you can type it in or scroll down your big list of fonts. And I'm gonna try this ultra condensed on. You can just toggle up with the size of the funds, or you could do the drop down and choose which size he wants. Um, but for this purpose, that's not quite condensing tall enough, but I want to keep moving, and so I'm just going to leave that here so I'll show that you can duplicate text by holding the Olt option shift our art Alz option click. And that double arrow appeared. I'm gonna hold command shift to resize proportionately on. Well, we have the smaller version of the text as well. Um, I do like to try to keep my frames under control. Could Sometimes they get big and you're figuring out the size. But work clean up as I go on now clicked on the diagonal slash here, which is the line tool in a click. Andi, drag over. And if I hold shift, that's a straight line. There is a red line here. If I clicked out what? The arrow It disappears, but I'm in the preview mode so I can see here, um, over to the left. In the palate, you have Phil and stroke. You use X to toggle between them. The light is not showing up because there is no stroke. So here are gonna hold click on apply color, um, and click off and the black line appears. I have to highlight again, and I click off of it because I'm going to go over to the right, show you the color palettes where you can I drop her a color or black is always here or even better swatches, Um, and black. And here you can use tint. Sometimes using something less than 100% is really helpful. Um, first, making your design more sophisticated, so you can always create new swatches in the color palettes and the toggle up here at new swatches used Pantone. Find them so you can create custom palates for your layouts as you get more sophisticated. So here we have Lambda Lope Accra, the soul of the opera. So I've gone ahead and and kind of worked a little bit ahead. Um, just to save time on and keep this video short into the point. Something I did do a giant text box, but it became a little bit unwieldy, so we decided to make two separate boxes. And just so you know, if you hold shift in the arrow key, it moves much faster. Um, or dragon. Hold it. Of course. Um, so the top waas italic and the bottom is regular type. Something I did do here on the top was adjust the, um the current in between letters. Sorry. Back to the character pallets. The turning is but the space between two letters So originally it looks something kind of went too far out of the box. That's why it disappeared. Um, here and so I wanted to just manually adjust the space between two letters, but not everything. So here, too. And I'll show you if I make this box too small, the text is going to disappear, but a red plus appears and we'll see briefly. But, um, I wanted to use different sizes and obviously they're different type treatment. So that's why it made more sense for me. Teoh use to separate text boxes. So again I could draw a text box here and do sold a labra and I'll copy and paste that text in, um and so you can change the size, the blocks or make it smaller. And so here the fun is pretty similar. I'm using Universes San Serif, but I'm going to go ahead and change the tracking, which is the one with the horizontal line underneath. And so that's going to change the space between all the letters on DSO. This is a nice way to kind of spread out like your type, breathe, um and looks nice. So now we're on to the by line, which is another text box, and so here did something special. So there certain things and documents and as you're using master pages, and if you're doing larger documents, it really makes sense to use both character and paragraph styles so they are away. Teoh can create consistency throughout your document. We're just working with one spread, so it's not the end of the world. Deduce everything individually, but as soon as you apply a character style, if it's applied to that text a byline elsewhere in the documents. If you make a change, it's going to update everywhere. So that's really the benefit. So I zoom in. So don't ever feel like you have to look at your documents. Super Zoom out all the time really helps to hone in, go in and outs and if you're working print to print it as well. So here we have a special type, so it's It's a Z, even see its capital letters here, and it's size six front here, and it's size six fun here. So what? These are our small caps and the best place to find these are under character styles, so I've gone ahead and created a character style, but we can go ahead and do the toggle new character style so you can get the pot. You can get the type treatment, how you want. Um, and it will set. Tell you, Minion Pro. Here's where it iss small caps. That's it. Always takes a second to find the tracking has been adjusted. You could do color. Um, anything you like. So it's already been set, and here you can name the character style. So I'm gonna say, by line to And even though my byline isn't red or pink, I'm gonna change it here, show you so in preview, in theory, it should show up here. But the reason it's not showing up I said, okay is because you have to make sure the correct by Linus selected. So it just turned green, which, when I click out, you can see it's red. Let's go into preview mode. And they're so, um, anywhere in the document that is selected by clicking the box with byline. Two everywhere would be pink so I can go back in here, change to color character colors, and there are multiple ways you can do with it. This and it takes a little practice. Um, but basically it's been applied. So if I change this here, too nine, that plus shows up because that was applied outside of of, um, the the original style. So you can redefine the style and then have that show up there. So I in a quick to the original byline and they go ahead and drag and drop and get rid of this. So that's character styles and paragraph styles are very similar. So let's look at body copy lips. So we should have the text box here. And my original article that I'm using is my example. The left isn't French and the writings and English, but I'm gonna pretend this is a body of text that goes from left to right, and it's two columns of text. So we saw earlier when you changed the size of the box, text disappears and the plus appears here we have a body of text. So whenever you're working documents, riel text is great. But I don't expect you all to retyped the entire articles that you're practicing with here . So I'm gonna go ahead and make sure my text box is intentionally longer than the text here to show you something. Something to go type Philip Placeholder text. And it's filled with a bunch of jibber jabber, which is exactly what I want. So see, down here there's in the right bottom, right? There's a white box that is empty. If I move this box up to that blast in the text, I have a plus here. That's where the rest of my text is hiding. And that's always kind of an error message, if you will, to show you that there's more text, and sometimes it's a matter of just going like this and the textures up. But we know we have quite a bit of text hiding there, so I'm going to go ahead. This usually placeholder text fills and pretty nicely, but let's got a little bit of wonky. So clean that up. Do plus, and then my cursor became loaded here. So here I can draw another text box on, and you can see some guides automatically appear in designs pretty smart that you want to do the same size, Um, column, and then you concede the Texas length from here to here so you can easily load text and place it just like an image in a way and an entire you know, 100 page word document if you want. Or rich text file. So you have that, um, text. There also go back. I'll delete that box. You can also take your tech tool. Do an empty box. That's not quite alliance. So you can hit, shift, click both hit shift and then in the top always hides for me There. Is this a lying top edges tool. There we go. The boxes are the same size, but it's okay. So quick, the left blocks hit the plus loaded cursor and just click on the right and it's going to go into the box that's already there. So you can click. This text can go from here to hear if this is on another page, so and so So practice linking with text. The next thing we're gonna work on is this nice little drop cap, which is here. Um, and it is a San serif, unlike the surf text were using for body copies. So I've already changed it to universe and they're not gonna switch to the paragraph tool. And here, just so you know there's some left and right in Don't tools, which are nice if you're trying to move text together. But down the here with this big A drop cap number letters. So one and I counted before it's 1234 lines steeps that one to three four. So we have a really nice drop cap, and it's pretty smart and knows how it works. So let's pretend that, like it wasn't working for you or you wanted to do something different or think like an aluminum made illuminated manuscript where it's an illustrated l. So I'm just gonna draw a box searing hold shift toe. Make it square. It's not filled until I hit Phil, bring that to the top. An employee Apply color. So pretend this is a really beautiful illustrated, um el So I'm gonna bring this over to our second column type here, place it where he wants, and so I'm going to go upto window. Um, type. Let's see text, rap. And so here, move this off so you can see it. You can select these options and you can see there's left and right offset. So if I feel like this, there's this invisible blocks here, moving the text to the right. So that's really handy. And it becomes linked. So that's it will make even space all around it. But we really don't need that. So do that. So another way to deal with a different kind of drop cap is to think about text wrap with the image. Um, down here we have the descriptions. A really great way to handle descriptions is also using the character or paragraph styles. You might want to use the paragraph styles because I do believe that you can use, um, you want to get the alignment. So, um, you have to look a little bit in here in dense and spacing an alignment. Right? So that set you get the funds set. Same tracking everything we want for maybe the descriptions. I want this to be seven point instead of six. I'm gonna go ahead and hit preview. Um, okay. And down here you have the plus sign. Um, and so I need to click on the actual paragraph style that I did and know what I did. I forgot to rename it, selling this. Say, um, encryption text. So there's a lot of ways you can clean up, but just, you know, alignments is in the top here, under paragraph and so you can align, right? Center justifying test text. Um, so that is quite handy. And then so that kind of covers my document. But I'm gonna show you a couple of things I was working on here. Um, here's just normal text here. You bullets on the way I got thes was highlighting the three words and then bulleted list. And the annoying thing is it in design? It's a little bit hidden, but up to the right of all the way top rights to the right of the lightning bolt is this toggle drop down bullets and numbering Who can choose fun bullets? You can choose the spacing so like an em dash and dash, and you can then choose the in dense so you can have a smarter, more sophisticated bullet points. And so you can also use the help menu and look at bulleted numbered lists. And it's also under type. So there are different places besides over to the right there. Find it on then, another thing tool to use to make your text a little bit more sophisticated is, um, the space below. So my cursor is at the end of the text Should be period. And then I use this just to create a little text below. So I'm gonna lose the word pancakes in a second. And so that's a case where I just know I need to expand. So the last fun thing to finalize their documents is at the very end of our text. Move this down. I'm going to pretend that here is the end of our text period. And so they're these Glimpse under type lifts and you can see there's one at the very end of the document is sank single the end of the article, go under cliffs. This is where those weird fonds called weddings and wing dings live or are useful. And here you can see everything in front of you symbols. So here is the exact same, um, diamond that we see at the end. You can go bigger and smaller, so I can double click it. And there has shown up in my text. So lots of fun things you can do with text. Adobe has a lot of great resource is to, but hopefully this walk through really gets you in gear. So next will finalize our file 5. Final prep and export: So here we are in the final file. Congratulations, everybody. I hope your projects are developing. Well, please, please, please share them in the online classroom because I think it's really motivating to see other people working on the same project on kind of the different layouts that everybody is drawn. Teoh also stay tuned to the discussion area because they have a discussion there of all your favorite magazines, and a lot of them are online. So you confined screen captures essentially, um, of magazines to practice and try out different techniques. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask me there. There's a technical help, things so everybody can learn from, um and all share adobe updates just so you know what is happening. So here we are in the final file, going to go ahead and turn layer one, the background layer off, and you can see if refined the file a little bit in massage some of the text and it looks pretty good so we can go ahead on and, well, first off always save the file and under edit. When you're not dealing with Lauren, it's, um, fake text filler text. Go ahead and use spell check. Very important as a final step in official documents. Um, but you can go ahead and save the documents, and then you can go to export. And there are some adobe presets. Um, ensued. Either way, it works, so I'll just go to export. Um, I'm to save it here. It's a print. Pdf. There are a lot of interactive features that you can do, so make sure it's pdf. Go ahead and save named it, and I'm going to go ahead and say replace because I've already saved it before. This, um, high quality prints is the default. Sometimes I don't think I need everything to be 300 pixels 200 whatever you can or you can do like high quality instead of medium. Sometimes you look at the file size afterwards and realize you check it when we're looking at images. I talked about bleed, and here you want Teoh. If it's a print, if it's going to the printer, you do bleed. Mark um, things like that. So actually don't need that. And you could do export um and well, A you'll have your final file every now and then. Some text has issues. And so I'm telling you that because I want to show you one other fun thing. So, um, the pdf is going to work for printing and you should never send a colleague and in design file unless of the graphic designer. So pdf is really the final result that you would send people. But when there's text, sometimes you have a display font that somebody doesn't have installed in their computer. So we're gonna package to the file next. But I want to show you, and I would say this as, like, file save as whatever the name is, Dash outlines. You just click the boxes and so there to here, and I'm gonna go to type, create outlines and you can see all the dots. We've just made this text fonts into vector outlines. So I suggest you save it as a separate file, just in case you need to edit the text because you go to the cursor tool here and you try to do it. And it can't, because now it's an image. But you're really good with the typography and points and different things that you want to just your funds. That's how you can kind of have fun with that. So that's outlines. Now, um, I'm gonna go ahead and undo, so it's back to text. Um, but the last thing going to show you is to package your file, and so packaging is gonna pull all the funds and all the images and all and the in design files. So it's all going to be in one place. And so, you know, for this practice, you don't Nessen necessarily need to do it. But as you have portfolio worthy pieces, it is a really good idea. So you have to save before doing that. Saved file Ping. Well done. We go printing instructions it's not going to print. I'm not gonna fill this in. Continue and then I'm gonna go to my layouts, save it here. It's going to save it in a folder package. You're going to get a warning. Pretty response aren't free. I share it on. The resource is in the classroom, so you can definitely yourselves and gets lots of ideas for funds. If you want to grow your collection and there are plenty of free funds, um, and then package and your document is all there. There's a separate links file. There's a separate images file and you're in design, so that is everything. And I hope you've enjoyed the class.
