About This Class

In this two-part tutorial, we are going to be exploring the basics of Depth of Field, what it is? The different types of DOF and how to get such effect inside of Lightwave 3D.

We are also going to be exploring how to create the Depth of Field (DOF) effect inside of Adobe After Effects using the Camera Lens Blur Effect and a Z-depth map we will be creating inside Lightwave.

This class will give you a thorough understanding of how the effect works and how to create it by yourself.

1. What is Depth of Field?: they were going to be talking about debt to feel. But before we go to life with, we need to tackle some concepts. What exactly is depth of field? Well, real camera lenses and brittle camera lenses such as the 1/2 in your camera in line with three B got only focus in a single point of the time. That creates a particular distortion effect where things in front I'm behind such focal point will appear blurry, and the focal point itself will remain chart. That sharp area is what is known as depth of field. There are two types of depth of field, shallow and deep in the shallow depth of field. Only a narrow portion of the image appears sharp, while in the depth field a vast portion of the image is in focus. So if you check this examples over here, the one in the left is shallow and the one in the right is deep. Now, with these basic concepts out of her way, we can go toe like wait and see how we can make some good use off the depth of field. So I'm gonna open the scene. I'll see you there in a second. Well, here we are in lightwave on This is the scene that I already set up for you to see. How did that feel? Effect works. All we have to do to get the the depth of field options is to select our camera and crispy to get the camera property span. Now in here, you'll see to the bottom part that there are three different types called motion effect stereo and the F that it stands for that feel. There's a check box here. So we have to do is to turn on the depth of field, and now you have your depth of field active. Now you want to see how the effect is affecting your image. You can either surrender or you can simply come here to the in this case to the left side, to this, my camera view and simply open. This time we were here and you'll see that there's a d o f. A slash motion blur preview and all we have to do. Simply click there, you'll be able to see how the motion blur is affecting your image. Okay, so let's look a little bit about the properties that we're going to need to control in order to get a good depth of field, that we have four options over here. We really need two of them. The 1st 1 is the focal distance and nasty name says it's going to terminate the distance where the focus of located Now, in my case, I want to center optic to be in focus and all I'm going to do is to increase decisive this on how my controlling this Well, when it turned on and off the evac, you'll see that there's a ring around well, the location of the lens. By increased size, you will see that ring drinkers. And if I increases as if it is going to scare proportionally now I have to make sure that my object is located around the location of the ring. So in this case, my central object is within the range of the ring. No. The second options we have here is the last F stop Real cameras. The F stop controls the amount of blood that is going toe. Enter our camera. If we have highlands f stop, More light is going throwing Teoh enter through our lands and the sharper name, which is going to look now if we decreased that valley, for example, in this case, I'm going to be something really, really know. The smaller the f stop, the more below her we're going to happen or image. We have to make sure that we have Oh, our focal distance said properly. And obviously we have to make sure that we have a proper oh lens f stop. In this case, I think that I threw a point to work. Fine. We have two more options over here. The diaphragm size on the diaphragm rotation. These options are supposed to help you achieve the book a effect. Now, I have tried deceptions before, but I have haven't been able to get a good result from them on. We truly don't need them in order to get the depth of field hell. How we normally know we don't have to do is to control the focal distance on the lands of stuff. So with this options ready, simply going to render this image. But before I do, you have to know something. Depth of field is great within, likely for you, but it has a little catch. You have to set your samples too high because otherwise the image is going to look grainy. So he's a downside to the effect is going to take a long to render. And that's why I have to stop my video so you don't have to watch my render water. It takes a little bit of a long time. So I'm good friend or I'm going to shoot. The Mitch assumed his adventures. Well, guys, this is my final render, and it took about 12 minutes to complete. Though I'm happy with the result, we still have some grainy areas and the only let's say proper weight. So this is by adding somewhere samples, which means that the final render will probably take a lot more time. Now. You were in a production environment with a fairly more complex ing. This will have taking ages to friend her. So that's the reason why I'm going to create a follow up tutorial to this one. We're going to explore a fairly simple technique on how to get a similar result, doing everything in cup 2. Depth of Field inside After Effects: in the last video, I showed you how to create that the fill effect inside of lively three. And although we were satisfied with the result, were a little concerned about the render times because in order to get a smooth image likely required us to increase the simple number quite a locked. Today, I'm going to be showing you a quick electric or complicate the same depth of feel effect by doing most of the working come. But in order to do that, we have to go to lay out first. So open up your scenes. I'll see you there in a second. Well, we're here in layout, then. Yes, you got me. We are going to be using the very same team from the last tutorial because I feel a little bit lazy at the moment. So, yeah, this one's gonna be flying. So it no more about it. Um Well, what are we doing exactly? Layup. Well, we need to create what is called a depth map. The map is a black and white image that is going to be displaying obviously black and white . Bali's relating the distance off the objects over in our seen relative to the position off camera. We're going to be using that image later in after fax or in our cups off. Where to get the depth of field fact once again. So first things first. We need to get read off the field. Fact we added in the previous tutorial. So simply up on the camera properties panel, let's go to the field panel. Um, simply unchecked it up. Feel option So the depth of field is not available anymore. He rendered this image. Let's start on the week, er you will see that we don't have the the field effect running anymore. So not that we turn that off. We can change some stuff in a render global, so going to decreased this because we don't need to be so high anymore. And well, in order to get the seed at that are a variety of methods. You can actually plan some great tutorials here on YouTube, but I'm going to go with the simplest and easiest way for me, which is that I'm going to be using this ive offer that you can find under effects panel. So you come here to defects found what prison control F eight your keyboard. How you come here to processing tax and you're in the processing tap. You're going to come here to the combust sitting buffer export not a compositing, but for export is going to offer you the option to render different passes from your seat. So in this case, I'm going to look forward to see that option. So simply, Oh, you're on the list on man. I can't find it. Geometry shading debt. Here it is so on conduced to check here and all that is left Eastern rendered seen. So let's do that. No, I don't think you guys want watch this sound going to possibly the year and I'll come back here as soon as it finishes. Well, here is my Faneuil render, and as he continued, only took one minute and 16 seconds last rendered to 12 minutes to complete. Now we check overhearing the layers option. You will see that we have attacked render This is the render data or buffer created. And in here you can see what I was actually talking about, Which is that the depth map? It's simple black and white image that is going to sign black and white values to the optics and are seen relative to the position, um, of the camera. Now all we have to do now it's too safer images and to open the compositing suffered that we're going to be using in this case is going to be after effect. So open up your program on. I'll see you there in a sec. Well, here we are in after effects, and I hope you guys have following along. I already loaded up the two renders we got from lightweight with charred their regular color render and that pass from the compulsory buffer export. Let's create a new come and then that come for going to drop both off our images. Now, if you are on experience, Aftereffects user might be concerned about the order of the layers. But in this case, although these layer is going to be controlling three, appearance of the effect doesn't matter where we put now to create or depth of field. We have to add an effect called camera lance flirt that is going to be available for us under a blur and sharpened group, and as soon as I at this effect, you can see that it is already affecting our image. I'm going to increase the radius rally. So to see a little bit better and, uh well, yes, this is having some blustery image, but this is not exactly one, because this blur is being applied in a uniform manner. And we went to use the depth map we created before To have somewhere a sharp had to have somewhere is blurry to we have to come here to the blur map option on from the layers panel . Select the layer where there see that map is located. And now we can see how it's affecting the image. We have the front of the charb on the objects towards the back story. If we look at our depth map, that means that whatever pixels are black or closer to the black hole, there are going to be sharp on wherever pixels are white or closer to white color are going to be blurry. You can actually modify this by inverting the blur map directly in effect. This may incessant. If I checked this, this means that whatever picks us are our wide are not air now going to be sharp. And when re pictures are black or closer to black holes are going to be blurry. That depends on what you wanna do. No. Oh, I want to concentrate on the blur focal distance over here because this is the part that is going to allow us to Hoeber to concentrate or to change her focal point in different objects. So I'm going to change the focal distance over here and now the centre optic this sharp on the object in front on building in the back are glory. And if I keep moving this lighter now, the object on the back is going to be sharp. You ordered objects are going to be blurry. That is because the effect is moving across the range of the luminous values off the map so we can change our focal point. You can actually animate this value by clicking on the stopwatch to the left. So last but not least, you can see that granting Spanish so you get to see it better that we're having a little issue towards the border. And that happens because aftereffects doesn't have enough pixels to reference to keep blurring this image. To fix this, we have to come here to the edge behavior option and check on the repeat edge pixels check box that is going to solve that issue, and it's get this one back to 25 and that's how we get the depth of field inside aftereffects. One final note in this topic. The reason for doing this in composition This casing after facts is not only because the render times are going to be faster, but also because of the amount of control. Do you have a final result In this case, you can actually modify this image before even applying the camera lens blur effect to get different results. Just remember that whatever effect you applied to descend to the sea, Det. Matt has to be pre composed before applying the camera. Last nor effect.
