In order to understand this you have to know that I was originally educated as a biologist which I have worked as for 12 years before turning into teaching. As a side-subject I studied religion for 1.5 years simply because I think belief and belief-systems are so exciting. My creative side has been there all along and I never allowed it to get dusty. I have refined it a little along the way by taking courses here and there, reading some books, a lot of comics and seeing a lot of cartoons - but otherwise I am pretty much autodidactic with respect to drawing/animation. 1. Intro: It's Brian here with another skill. She editorial on how to use open tombs. And if you haven't already seen, my first course is the one up here and you can go in and find that on my skills here portfolio to just check out what this open tools is all about. But it's a great two D animation software that's absolutely free. I have to thank a lot of people who have already enrolled in my first class, and one of those Celeste from the U. S. Asked me, Could you do a class about how to import a background into open tunes? And that is exactly what I'm going to do until going to show you how I make a background in photo shop. How important into open tunes. And I'm even going to show you how I make an image sequence for an animation inside. For you shall be, if you like that software better for for drawing and then going to show you how to import that image sequence into open tunes. So if you're interested that see you in class 2. Thoughts on backgrounds in Photoshop: so we'll come to this class on making backgrounds and importing them into open tunes. Now we start out in photo shop, which is my favorite drawing program on gum in here. I'm going to show you how I build up a simple or a simple background. It's a it's a background I made out of a line drawing that you can see here. And, um, the idea behind this line drawing was first of all that I would I would like to have some perspective in it because if I have perspective in it, then it gives much more treaty feeling. And I was able to make something come from the background and to the foreground, and I'm going to show you why that is because, as you can see, I have the stairs. Yeah, coming out like this, coming to watch you, meaning that there must be some vanishing point here. And I actually started often start out by making across where I have the vanishing point. And then I make these lions and you can see I make them in a separate layer. Another vanishing point is that you can see I have the rooftop going like this and have the side of the house going like this. So out here somewhere, there is a vanishing point. All these vanishing points is part of giving dips through the, um to the to the destroying. You can also see that I I have I wanted I wanted to give a field that the house is speak. So I made a vanishing point again. Up here, this vanishing point was made in order to make the house look exceptionally big and a little threatening. And the idea was to make a kind of little scary house here. You can also see that I've used this because here you have the two periods larger at the bottom than up here. And also windows up here a smaller than the bottom like the those A to ground level here, and stairs are becoming bigger as they come towards you. Another great thing about doing perspective drawings like this is that you can if you want , for instance, let's say we want a bore, too. Now we we just made the bouncing ball before. Let's say we want that again here, and we would like to animate that a ball was flying from this stare down to this down to this. And then it was jumping the last part down here so you would have a small poll here and it would become larger and larger. Remember, it would get flat here. It would jump year stretch, get flat. It will get bigger and bigger and bigger as it moves towards you. And these lines here can help you think about such things as I'm going to move all this into open tombs and animated there. Then this is Sony for helping me with the thoughts and how to do that. Because, of course I turn on the off the perspective lines before I at this background into open tunes. But before I saved this background here in in in photo shop, I want to show you a little more than I did. I wanted to to give it some tones, so I added a tone to it here, and I wanted to give a little more shadow there and and then I added some really hard shadows here and you can see the tree. I really that really gave some value to the tree here. Also, a lot of lions in this third layer here, Um, and all this shit off course help the perspective because the things that move towards where there should be, like you could imagine. There's a moon with some light coming out here. There's more light than in here and over here, which is more or less depressions in in compared to this that goes, that stretches out in in the room oil in India and in the environment here. So you can imagine that the moonlight iss coming down here. I imagine that this is in during nighttime and I also added a background here. I even made some stars, and then I made some clouds. And for these clouds, I simply did a layer behind the house in front of the night sky. So becoming like this, maybe it's easier to see if I take out the perspective lines. Yeah, you can see I used it for making a little shadow ish down here on the stairs. This will. Yeah. Okay, so this is my image. And now I want to save it. I either save it. Usually I saved us Jay Peak or a PNG. I can use the export function and export s This is the Danish version. So it says export er some That means experience Port ass. And you can choose P and G or J pick. Those are the ones I usually use. You can also, if it's for the weapon that this actually the case when it's purely digital export and go say for whip. And I usually used to setting PNG 24 because that gives high resolution and and I used picture size. I note the picture size, actually, because the picture size will be very important when I imported in to open tunes, as I will show you in the next lesson off this class. But for now, we just save it in a folder that, you know, where is This is often the problem that you're looking for the folder that you save something in. But now do this and also note the size here. Okay, After you've saved it, we're ready to open it in open tunes. And this is what I'm going to show you next. So see you there 3. Importing a background into OpenToonz: Okay, so now we're inside open tunes and we want to import our background into the the first column here where we want to place our background. So we go into file. And as I explained earlier, we have the possibility to load a scene that's loading all the settings for the animations we can load. Level level are the images. So we go to note level and in here we go and find the, um the background that we have made. And this is the one called whose poop Aga, which is Danish for house on the hill. And it says vision trees seen one. And you can see I saved the desert JP here. So and we have two possibilities here we can either just loaded in here. That means adding it simply the drawing into the first ah rock called human role here. Or we can press apply here. And if we press or we can cancel if we press supply, we get some possibilities. We get the possibility to cancel again. Of course, we get the possibility to load the image directly in here. But if we choose this import, it means that we do not only load the image in here. We also imported into a folder that open tombs has created in the background that isn't directory or folder system off the program. If you want to keep all your files together in their original form, then import, it's a good idea. Uh, here I just choose load because I just want to show you this. So I choose load and you see it comes in here immediately. Now I can close this one box down, and as you can see, it doesn't feel the whole camera era area. Look, I haven't really told you about the camera yet, but you can resize the camera so that it fits the size off the picture that you have just imported and or you can Maybe I should tell you what I just did there I used my middle mouse button with Is meeting with the mouse wheel. And if I do that, I moved closer or I move farther away. So I'm moving on this one. I can use the Antal there with the, um the left mouse buttons who move around the to pick here. Now if I want to the camera to just catch was in here. Then I go to file and I go to, um, output settings. And if you you might remember when I saved the file, the, uh the background the size of it was 12 80. That's 1280 t two s. So So so. And here it's 1920. So the camera size here, I want to change that. So it's equal to the background image I added in here. So I simply go in here and I say 12 18 1280. And if I press return this one because it's locked, then this X this Why actually should see this is the X going out here. And this is the Y axis here, going up here that automatically gets to be 720 because the proportions are locked. So and it does so right away. I could press render, but then it would just make me this one picture here, and I'm not interested in that. Yes, I close it down. I could also have made the camera smaller, which would allow me to move the camera around in the scene. But that will be, uh, within the scope of ah, later class that I will make. Okay, so now you have it here. And what I can do is I put it here and then I say, OK, I want to make an animation debts. 12 frames, Let's say 24 frames long. So I just stretch it here again, using this little well down there. Okay, so now I have my background, and now I'm actually ready to to any mate on this. And as you already know, I can, of course, call this back ground return. I put myself up there. I go to the brush and now I can any made and let's say I want to animate the the ball bouncing. I used my mouse wheel here to go a little closest. I can see it standing in the upper car deck. So and, uh, of course I want to make sure that I have actually got color. I just press day. I just use control set to get rid of, uh, to choose the white one. I can raise it with using my razor. And then I I didn't choose to brush. So making this little ball there and again so Now we're down here. I go to the animation yet on. I just used the arrow again to go down there. I want to have onion skin on here, so I make it a little bigger. It's stretching a little. It's going down. So and basically what I'm doing from here is that I am, uh I'm squeezing and stretching the ball here as it goes down the stairs. But I keep on using the Thea perspective. Lines are at least thinking about the perspective perspective lines. As I moved the ball further and further towards us, I increased the volume. So, like I said before, normally you you don't increase the volume of something but went going to watch you off course due to the perspective, the balls valuable in increase. And this is actually what happens here. And I can use the sit a little ticker there because I want the animation not to run. That fight could also just race. They're the background images by just standing under then president, the lead or people and now the ball bounces and we have made an animation on top of our background. So see you in the next class where the next lesson off this class where we I'm going to show you how to import several images. And first, I'm actually going to show you how to make these images, which would comprise and small animation in itself. See you there. 4. Creating and naming a sequence of images for bulk import: so welcome back to another lesson on how to import into open tombs. And now what I want to do now is I want to make a small animation, and I want to make it into aside photo shop. Yeah, I would say it in a different way. I want to make the images inside photo shop because there are ways of animated into Photoshopped That's beyond the scope of this tutorial. But imagine that I want to make swing. I want to make it all tired hanging here, and it's swinging around in the wind. Imagine that. Yes, and I prepared it for you, actually, because I made a sketch of an old tire hanging here and then I on top. And did I make that in one layer than that? The next layer. I drew it on top but made it swing a little. And then in the next layer, I mean, it's with a little more and so forth and so forth and so forth. Then, in the layers below the layers with sketches, I filled them out with grey and some shadows. So, so so so that you can see it's turning around now if I turned all the ones that on top here , the Taiwan to tire to tire treated tired feet for all the way up to 10. I can actually save the picture with only one of these tires and then I haven't image that I can load into open tunes now. I have already in open tunes added my background, So I just want to show you how you can add into tyre itself. So I actually turn on off all the background pump a boom boom, and I only saved tire. So I go up to file, I go up to down to export, save for whip, and remember to keep the same image size as you have in your background, because then it will fit into open tools and be placed in the exact right place. So, um, I have already prepared, thes and saved all these tires for you. But just to show you what to do, because here one thing is very important. And that is the naming of this because open tunes is made such that it's very important that you name it the right way. So I use BDS. That's just because those are my initials you can use your own initials that you can call it some fin else. Pia's I p d. I I don't know what, but BDs will work, of course. And then you use that dot and then you say 0001 and then you save that one. And of course, because I saved now it says, Do you really want to write override that one? Yes, that's okay, because I already I know it's the same. So now I turn on the next tire and it's Phil, the next tire, and it's Phil and I do exactly the same export and say for weap on using the same size and safe and BDs dot cero cero cero to now there may be ways of doing this in bulk saving and telling it that it's okay to all right. But of course I only do this because I have already made it for you. So in this way I go on and I go on, although, and I save them all all the way up to number 10 here. And the most important thing here is when you save it that you give it the right name. Oops, that's absolutely the most important that you give it right Name BDs 0.10 Decent use should . This should just be some letters than a dot and then four digits that specify the number in the animation. So? So the idea is that then you have all your I saved him here. Then you have, in this fold saved all off your images, and they're now ready for adding in to open insurance. And that will be what I will cover in the last lesson off this class. Thank you. 5. Importing a sequence of Images into OpenToonz: So we're back with the last lesson in this class on how to import into open shoes. And I'm going to show you now how to import, uh, an image sequence. Now they just go a little closer, his crawling with my mouse well, and just using my lift button on my mouth for dragging it. So I said, Well, good. So he I have once again my background that I have loaded in on here. I have my animation running this so very nice. At least I think so. So I go into third column and I know now, and I'm now going to load in my animated my sequence of images that it's going to become an animation over in this column here. So I'll be standing in the first row. It will be going up here file and remember that I have already shown you how I can lote level and then add in. My image is over here, but I'm going to show you that I can also at in an easier way because I could just open up the file here and then I can strike in the 1st 1 over here in a slow Este unnamed like this . Then everything will be nice. It will place this first in this 2nd 3rd 4th and so forth. Up to number 10 here showing you this. I just drag it over here. I can also drag it here. I'll just drag it here. And then it asked me, Do you want to import a load? Now, I've discovered a thing here that I need to tell you, because if I loaded, it only takes four pictures at a time. Images sorry at a time. So here you have to him, Chris Import. And now, as I have already done this once because I wanted to practice before I made this tutorial off course to make it a bit swift here, uh, it iss asking me what I want to override thes or keep existing files. So just or right, the existing file with a new one. So it adds thes 10 in hit. And now, if I do like this, you see, this will be turning around. Wait a minute. I only have 10 of these. Um, but I can easily you know, Marty's with my mouth. Then say control and copy and then at them in control V like this and then And of course, need to stretch this a little more. And then if I do like so well, it's quite windy here, I must say, is quite windy because it's running pretty fast here. Um, if I do control set control set again here, I can choose another thing. It can go up here and I can make this first picture last the frame more in this next one friend more so each picture will for each image with last two frames. So now it should be It should be going around a little slower. You know what? The last one, I'll just make a little faster day, okay? So if I do it once again now it's going a little slow around and I have the ball bouncing in this call. You and I have my tire turning around in this column here. So one final thing is that if you don't like the way that these names have specified having to name them something here and dot syriza procedural ones here seriously or two and all that I wouldn't advise it, but you can actually change in file preferences go into loading go into level setting by file. Former going to PNG because that's what we're loading it with here. Edit and you can specify your own type of name. This is stitching digit. Cyril wants zero Tuesday tree. Ah, and it's giving priority to number one, meaning that the first number one here would be the first to come then to than trees. And for I don't prefer to do it. I used a default sitting, meaning that you can just loaded by giving it names like this. Remember that if you just drag it like this over, if you're standing like here and you're just dragging one of these over to the scene here, then all of these will be loaded. All of these will be loaded. But if they don't have these names, you will just load the one picture and not all of them. So that's the difference between between.
