Adobe Illustrator can be overwhelming with its many tools. In this class I will simplify Illustrator and show you the essentials. These are skills that I use on a daily basis. If you master these skills, you will create great artwork.

1. Illustrator Essentials Introduction: Welcome to Illustrator essentials, tips for creating great artwork. My name is Tim, and I am a freelance illustrator. I do a lot of different Vector work. When you first open illustrator, you don't just snap your fingers and start creating great artwork. There's a lot of tools to master and it can be very overwhelming. I will simplify illustrator and cover the essential tools that I use on a daily basis. These skills include alignment, rotate, reflect, pathfinder, and a little bit of the pen tool. I have another class called vector basics that does an in-depth look at the pen tool if you're interested in mastering that first. But if you master these tools, you can create fun designs. After we learn our skills, we will create our class project, which is a badge design. You can think of this badge as a single illustration or the start of a series of icons or badges. This class is for anyone beginning in Illustrator or any level of skill who wants to improve. What you need for this class is Adobe Illustrator and an idea for your badge design. Let's get started. 2. Class Project Intro: The best way to use the essential skills we will learn is to create an illustration. We will create a badge of our own design. A badge is basically an illustration contained within a shape. You can choose anything you want for your badge. It could be a place you've traveled, an animal, or a skill or hobby. What will the main focus of your badge B? After you have a topic, you can think of the shape. You don't have to come up with something new if you don't want to. I will walk you through three different examples. Feel free to do one of these or try something new. Now in terms of color, I like to keep my badges within a color palette. And I love having a dark color next to a bright color, the color really pops. The next three videos will be these three designs. Let's get started on the first one. 3. Illustrator Essentials: Artboards, Alignment & Rotate: The first skills we will cover in Illustrator essentials are using art boards, using the alignment tool and rotating objects. And so let's get started. I'm an illustrator. I'm going to create new for these badges. I like to do five by five. So I have one art board, no bleed. And then we'll create that. And then I'll do command our shows your rulers. And I'll just jump right into alignment. And so I'm gonna do, I'm gonna do a guide here. And a guide here can put them anywhere. And then I select this vertical guide. Go to alignment. And you can either align things to a selection, which is would be like two objects for objects aligning them or align things to an art board. This is so important. So I'm gonna do a line to our board, it's clicked and then I'm gonna do the center. And then the vertical align center or not vertical line, sorry, the horizontal align center. And then for this one I will do the vertical line center. So now that is the perfect center of our art board. So what I like to do you can lock guides, but what I like to do is I'm going to call this guys. And I use a lot of layers. That's another tip. A lot of layers. I pretty much use one object or one thing will be on a layer so I can turn it off and on quickly. So I'm going to lock this. And what we'll do is we'll do snap, snap to point, and then we've got got smart guides. So that'll tell us where things are. So when you're at the centre, it should say Center. And when you're on a guide, it'll say Guide so you know where you're clicking is accurate. So I'm gonna do a new layer and then this would be my main circle for our badge. And now we'll align some more things. So I'll do an ellipse, a circle. And interesting things. This is a good tip that you can do is you can do Option Shift and then drag out from the center and you have your scaleable circle. So instead of just drawing something from the corner like this, you can, you can drag it from the center. And since our art board is five-by-five and that same TTIP will help you with your art boards. You can edit your art boards at anytime by going to the airport tool. This shows up and then you can either make it higher or drag it to the left. I used to be really confused about this. Used to be kind of odd until I got used to it. And so playing around with art boards is helpful. But if that same tip I used to scale the circle can be used for your art board. So I'm gonna do Option Shift and then you could scale it perfectly. So if you're drawing something and you ran out of space and you want it still to be in the middle, you could drag it out like this. I'll go back. And so I'm just going to. Draw our circle. And a lot of times when I have these perfect, like five-by-five art boards, I like to make sure that my circle is perfect as well. So I double-click do 55. And then it drew it. I'm going to start with a, just a black fill here. And now I wanna make sure when we're working on our badge, I wanna make sure that this is aligned. So I'm gonna go to line center, line center, boom it is. So that's this perfect circle is perfectly aligned in my art board. So now this is going to be our main BAD shape. Lock it. And then I'm going to show you how I do like my outer stroke for my badges. So I'm going to, I copied and pasted it in front on a new layer. And then I'll do shift x, it toggles, fill and stroke. So now I'm just going to give it a random grayscale. And then here's a tip for when I'm doing a circular badge and I want to keep it perfectly within five-by-five engines. You can go over to your stroke. See when you add a stroke like this, the default is that it aligned stroke to center. But I don't want an out of my art board. So I'm gonna go here and do a line strokes inside. So now look, your badge still fits perfectly in your art board. It's perfectly five by five. And then this is a great start to a badge. And then I'll show you another tip for art boards. If you want to do a series of these. And you, you want all of your, your badges to be pretty much the same shape. A lot of times what I'll do as all, I'll duplicate my art boards. Oh, here's a tip. If something's locked on a layer and you duplicate art board, it will not duplicate that object. So we're gonna go here. Two art boards. Duplicate our boards. And now I have to, and you can keep doing that. You can keep duplicating. And then let's say. So now you can draw an object here, a different object here. And then when you go to export these as PNGs or PDFs, you have a beautiful set of badges that are identical in shape. And they, they'll form like a nice icon set if that makes sense. And then here's another good art board tip. Rearrange all art boards I like to do because I like them vertically. So then go here to arrange by column. And then I've got a little bit of space here, 0.28 i like for some reason. And then move our or with art board. Very important. And so now if I'm working on like an icon set or a bad set, I'll do like my ten art boards all the way down. And I know that each one is perfectly. Centered. So I'm gonna delete this art board, but I wanted to show you what you do. If you i will say at MOOC that guide. Let's go back. So it's good practice. Center. That should be center and I'll lock my guides again. So with alignment, basically centering things to an art board is very important. And then also, if you've got an object that you want, you want it to be aligned to the side of your board. You can play around with this blind to art board is just, again, center things. You can move it all the way to the right. You can put them in the bottom, bottom corner by just going bottom and then bottom right. And so this is a good thing. So you're not just like placing things and going, I think I think that's aligned, you know, you're the is doing the hard work for you. So then I'll go back here, Control Z. And I'll, and I'll show you, I'll show you some aligning of objects by selection. And then I'll go onto a rotate. Right? So I'm going to layers here. I'll walk these. And then I'll, I'll do something new. Triangle. So a design thing that I like to use are triangles a lot. I'll use them as like if I'm drawing a, a badge of a bird, I'll use, I'll draw a square here. Let's just make this light grey. And I'll go to my Pen tool to make a triangle. I just click on this. It says, see the minus. And there I've got a triangle, half a square. And so let a lot of times would all like to do is have this as being like just a design element. Triangles can really stand for a lot. So let's say I have a few that I've drawn. I'm copying pasting in front. Now I just have four random triangles and I wanna make sure that these are centered, These are aligned so there's equal space between them. So I have more selected. And then I'm gonna go to a line, a line to selection. And then these are very helpful. I urge you to play with these horizontal distribute center. So now you saw how it moved. These are all evenly spaced. So now you can start doing things like. You know, I want to pattern. And so now you've got this pattern of triangles. And then what you could do. So right now these are aligned, but they are separate objects. So I'm going to group these. And then what you could do is copy paste, copy paste. And so now these are three objects. So you can do your Vertical Distribute Center. And I guess they are. So now you have that kind of a, a nice grid here. And so that's just a quick tutorial on aligning select objects by selection as opposed to art board. And that's helpful when you just have, you know, different. I have like three circles that I want to be perfectly spaced. Speaking of circles, I'll show you something that's very important for badge design. So I'm going to draw an ellipse circle, just going to hold down shift, so it's a perfect circle. And then I'm going to make this small. I'll zoom in here. So now I'm gonna make this right in the center. And I want it to be a, a, a nice little pattern around my stroke or around my badge in a circle. So I'm gonna go to a line to our keyboard, and it is, put it in the center. And now this is rotating, this is very important. I clicked on R and then you're gonna go see how it's this center. You know that if you click there, you'll be in the center. So now I'm gonna do Option click. It's saying, all right, what do you want to do? How many rotations? So here's a great tip. A circle is 360 degrees. I want 20 of these around it. So instead of figuring out what degree that is, you do 360 divided by 20. And then you do copy. If you didn't do copy it, just it okay. It wouldn't move that object. It would move the object, then you wouldn't have one here. But now I wanna do, I wanna duplicate, duplicate, duplicate. So it goes all the way around. And I'm going to make 20 of these in by putting 360 divided by your huge divided evenly. So it's gonna go all the way around and end like here. And it's going to be a perfect pattern. There won't be a start and an end point. So I'll do Command D, And I'll just keep doing that. And there we have 20 circles all around. So you can do this with anything that you want, like a nice pattern. And you'll see in bad design, sometimes I'll do like there's a line, shift x, make it a stroke to stroke. And I, I like to use lines around corner on all my lines. It just looks a little nicer. So let's say I have something like a sun in the middle and I want little lines, little lines around the sun. Now remember I can go to my center option shift, shift x. Here. I've got my son and I'm gonna do a little lines to show like, you know, the sun rays of the sun. So I click on my object that is perfectly centered. Do our option are, and then I'm gonna do a bunch of these. So I'm gonna do 360 divided by 42, just random. And then it'll show you if you do preview, how close those are going to be is you're going to be really close to each other. So I'm going to copy and then I'm just gonna hold it down. Watch it go. There you go. So now I have this. I did this very quick son patch, which if I did some cool colors like this was orange in the back was like dark purple. That could be very cool. So like it doesn't take much to really get going on these patches. So we'll keep going and move on to some more tips. 4. Illustrator Essentials: Reflect Objects: The next skill we will cover is reflecting objects. Many times when I do a badge or when I'm just doing a design, I draw half of the object and then I flip it to create the other half. What this does is creates a symmetrical design. The left side and the right side are equal. So as an example, I will use my pen tool. And I'm just going to draw anywhere on the board. So I'm going to click hold shift, so it's a straight line, click again. And then with my pen tool, I'm going to click press Option or Alt. Drag. Click, drag. Click option are all drag. Click, drag. And this creates maybe half of a shield shape. Nothing really great. But what I'm gonna do because I know that this right side is a straight line. I can click on it, go up to object transform, transform each. And now this box, if you're not familiar with it, is very important. This is where I'm saying let Illustrator do the work. So instead of you like flipping it and trying to make it right, Illustrator will do it for you. So here if you do reflect x, it'll go horizontally. If you do reflect why, it'll go vertically. And then here you're telling it where you want it reflected. So we want it since our since our right side was a straight line, when we flip it, these two shapes will line up. So if you put okay, it would just flip it. If you put copy, it'll keep the one you had and make a new one, which is what we want. So now we have these two shapes. And if you go to outline mode, you see that they line up. There's no overlapping. Now as a note, I wouldn't with you if you draw something with a stroke just as a stroke and then flip it, it won't line up perfectly because the stroke is on. So I like to use fills whenever I'm doing this, which you just have your fill here with no stroke. So now I'll show you a different way on how to reflect things. So you can draw something, draw half of a shape anywhere in your art board, flip it, and now you have oval-shaped. Another thing I like to do, especially in badge design, is draw right on my guide. So I'm going to click, hold shift click, and then I'm going to click Option Drag. I'm going to do the same thing. And so now, because I started a straight line on my guide, it, this will also be perfect when we flip it. And the way to check that is pressing a dragging over these two dots. So these are the only two that are chosen. And then you go to a line to our board. Click in the middle. They didn't move, so it meant they were already there. And what that does is put your points right in the middle. So now press to V To get my selection tool. Click on it. You're going to press o, which is reflect. Go on your guide. Press option, click. That brings up your reflects box. And then you're gonna choose vertical. You have Preview on do copy. And now it's basically a different way of doing transform each what we did earlier. So now we have this shield shape that is perfectly in the middle, which helps for doing a symmetrical design within a badge. And then another thing I like to do with Reflect, I pressed L for ellipsis, hold down shift or a perfect circle. I wanna do a face. So I'm gonna go, I drew and I, I press o, went to my guide. Press Option or Alt. I'm gonna do vertical copy. So now I have two eyes. And now I'm going to click on my guide. Shift. Click option drag. You see how I have a line here that shows that I am perfectly straight. I'm going to do this and now go over. I'm gonna check the bottom when you, when you reflect something like this, it's good to have. It's important, I feel unless you want to point at the bottom to go drag this. I'm in my direct Select, which is a, I've shift held down. And what that does is make, makes this a flat surface down here so that when I click on it, go to my guide, pressed o, go to my guide, option, vertical copy. There we go. Now I have a little face. And so because these were lined up, I flip it, it now became one shape. So reflect is a very powerful, very easy thing. And so yeah, we'll keep moving in. Work on Pathfinder dao. 5. Illustrator Essentials: Pathfinder Tools: The last skills we will cover are using Pathfinder tools. And Pathfinder. It is a tool. It's either in your doc here, in your menus, or you can go up to window, go down to Pathfinder. I have a check because it's already up, but you would click on that and it'll pop up. So Pathfinder is next to a line. And I basically used three of these. Sometimes I use more, but I'm going to show you three main ones, which is Unite, divide, and then minus back. Alright, so for my last little video, I have half a shape here. I'm going to click on it. I aligned I align my points, I'll just do it again. I did a further direct select clip, went over those two points, go to launch our board aligned to middle. So I know these points are in the middle. I'm gonna do click oh, option or Alt, click, copy. So now I have two shapes. But sometimes when you have these two shapes next to each other, even though they're right next to each other. Print it out or look real close and you'll see a tiny gap. That's kind of a, you just want to avoid that. So I like to unite my shapes as much as I can, especially when I'm printing them. So when you're doing a badge or something, it's very important, I think to, you know, you can draw half, reflect it. But then once you're done, I'd like to go in here, click, shift, click, and then you night. So what unite does is it takes two objects that are overlapping or next to each other, like right next to each other. And it unites them, it makes one shape. And so that's a very important tool. And another example would be like I drew a square. And then let's see. I'm just going to draw a triangle on top of it. So I'll go to command y. You see how there's two different shapes. I select both of them do unite, and now I have a house shape, one single shape. So I like to unite things as much as I can just so there's no, no chance that there's any gap between them. So unites important. Another important thing in InDesign and when doing a badge is I like to do minus back. So let's say we have this and we're gonna do, let's do a cool space themed mission badge. So we're going to hold it L for ellipse, Hold it down shift. And this is going to be my moon. And I'd like to use circles a lot for stars. I like to use circles a lot for like the moon, but sometimes you want something a little more dynamic. So I'll do, I'll copy this. Behind. And now I'm going to hold a corner shift so it stays a perfect circle. And then what I'm gonna do, I want this to be a cool, cool-looking moon. So I'm gonna go to my outline mode so you can kinda see the overlapping and so this shape is behind it. So I'm gonna select both of these, go to pathfinder minus back. And what it does is takes the object that's behind the other object and then takes it away. So that is a way to kind of draw without having to draw. You know, I didn't have to draw these shapes. I didn't have to draw this perfect circle here. So minus back is very important when you can even do things like I have a square and then I do another square behind it. And so now I select both of them. Go to My minus back. And now it's like a window. So I was able to subtract the back. And now here's a tip I like when I do badges. So my art board, let's just check on it. My art board right now is five-by-five. And why I like to keep these equal. Like instead of working in like 4.2, I just like kind of these clean numbers, 564 inches, but something that's very cool. All right. Let's say I have I'll just do a kind of a quick I'll do like a quick badge here, just as circular shape. Alright, actually I'll do it. I'll double-click. I'll do 55. Something that looks cool on badges is to not just have a solid fill, but to have kind of the split of color. And I'll show you what I mean by that. So aligned to our board, center. Center. Alright, so I'm gonna have my main fill here. And then I'm gonna go to my layers. I'll do Maine. And I'm gonna do a new layer. And that's gonna be my color bars, I'll call it. So I have my main BAD shape. And then I'm going to copy this, all lock this, paste this in front, and then I'm just going to choose a different color just to kinda show you guys. So something that I like to do for for a badge. Is I can, I can draw a square here. And then in properties here, I have my height. So my height is five inches. So I'm gonna take this, this is where illustrator does the work and I'm gonna do divide it by three. So now, instead of guessing what Thirds are on this, I have a box. So now I can come up here. I can go aligned to our board, go to the top. And so now I can unlock my guides layer. Pull down a guide, transform, each going to go to the bottom. And I'm going to reflect it on y. So it goes down vertically. So I'm going to copy and then command the copy again. So now I have thirds. So I have a guide there. I'm actually going to delete this guide and delete this guide. And now I've got a guide I can drag down here. So I can delete these boxes. And now I have this split into thirds. So let's say instead of just a black background, I wanted to do something where it looks like horizon lines or something cool. And so what I'll do is using my guides. I'll go my Pen tool, click, shift click. And then I'll do that again. Shift click. So now I have a circle, two guides evenly spaced and lines. And I'm going to make sure that these lines have no fill. So now what I'm gonna do is I have my two lines and my circle. So I'm gonna go to V, select them all. And then I'm gonna go to my pathfinder and do divide. So what that did, get rid of, get rid of that guy here. So now what I have, and when you divide, it's good to know that when you divide, everything is grouped. So you go to ungroup. So now I have a circle split into thirds. What's the significance of that? So now I can go in here. I can delete this because I'm going to keep, remember we have a circle behind it and then I'm gonna do a dark grey here, maybe something like that. And then I've got this. So when you do badges, you can use divide to split up your shape until like thirds or fourths, and then choose different colors. And what that does is kind of gives it a little more depth and gives it some just some, a different look as opposed to having just one background shape. So that was Unite minus back and divide. And if you haven't used Pathfinder play around, you know, there's nothing you can really mess up by just playing around. But let's move on and do our first batch. 6. Tutorial No. 1: Sun Badge: Okay, let's get started on our class projects. We will do three of these and you can choose which one you'd want to do. You can come up with your own idea or you can do one of these. So the first thing we'll do, I have an art board here. It's set for five by five inches. And this badge is gonna be a circular badge. We're going to use a lot of Rotate and a little bit of Pathfinder. And so the first thing I'd like to do, and I'm doing something that I need to have centered is I draw some guides. So we do a vertical guide and a horizontal guide. And then I'm gonna go up to here, aligned to our board, do it in the center, and then aligned to our board, vertical aligned center. So now I have guides here where this is my perfect center in the middle. And I'll lock that. And then that'll be my top layer. So this is going to be around bad is going to be a son. And I'll start with my main shape, which is a circle or an ellipse. You can either draw it or just choose a random color here. Or you can double-click it. You click on an ellipse, double-click, and then I do five. Tab five. And now it's the same shape as my art board. And what I can do is click on it, go to the line to our board. And then I'm going to click on that. And that, and it puts it right in the middle. So this would be our main shaped kind of our background. Actually gonna make this a darker color. And I'm going to copy, this is going to be our son shape. It'll go right in the middle. So I took our main shape copied and I'll do a paste in front. Now go to the corner here. Actually gonna make this a different color. So you'll be able to see that something's happening. Go to the corner option or Alton shifts and then drag. And then there we go. We have a perfectly centered sun in the middle. And then what I'll do is we're going to have some, want to make this a little brighter. And then we're going to have some rays of sun around it. So that's where rotates gonna come, come in handy. And pretty much the way I work for vectors is I, any object or group of objects that are similar. I do a layer for each one in case you need to lock the others and just select that one. So this will be raise rays of sun. So I'll zoom in so you can see this, but we're gonna do rays of sun all around. And it's going to add some detail. So first I'm going to do half of a triangle and it's snapping to the guide here. So I have half my triangle. I'm gonna make this. Should he gonna make my son a little brighter? I'm kinda, kinda shift this up a little so it's more yellowish. And these colors upright change them, but this is just for fun. Alright, so I locked my son and now just to make sure that you have a lot of times what I'll do when I'm making an object is I'll draw half of it and then flip it. So I'm going to make sure that these two points are centered. So I'm gonna go aligned to our board center. And now I can click on that object, transform each. I'm going to rotate and on the x axis and go to my right side. So then when you do this, and I'm gonna do copy, so there's so it makes a copy. So this is still remaining. And now I'm gonna make this a little different color, barely, barely. And now I can group this. So here's will rotate comes in handy. And I'm gonna make this a little bigger. Alright, so I'm gonna click on that, which is grouped, and I'm gonna go to my center are Option or Alt and click. And now if you want, if you ever want to perfectly rotate something so that they're evenly spaced around. This is a great trick. 360 divided by, I'm just gonna start with about 15. It'll make it put this 1 15th of a circle. So that puts it about their copy. And went a little further. So I'm gonna do that again. Go to the center are Option or Alt 360 divided by two. Let's do ten. Okay, so there's a little bit of space there between these two. So I did Command D to duplicate it or copy. Here we go. You can always you can always hide your guys to see how something's coming along. But it's starting to take shape. And a lot of times when I do a badge or an icon, I like to put a stroke around the circle. I'm gonna do that right now. You can kinda do at anytime, but I'm going to copy my main circle. And then I'm gonna do a new Later layer called stroke. Bring that to the front. And we don't lock everything else. Command F. And then you can do v shift x. And what that does is you toggle your fill and stroke. And I'm gonna make this pretty bright. And I'm going to bump up the stroke care. And you see how the stroke is leaving the art board to avoid that, go to show options because I want this to be five-by-five, like exactly. So I'm gonna do a line strokes inside and boom, it doesn't leave our art board. So we've got the start of a badge here. I'm actually going to make my main circle will darker. Just so it pops more C, So it'll be too much, but that's okay. And now we'll put a face on the sun just for fun. And to do that is actually pretty easy. We'll just call it face. I'll sample this color and actually I'll make it a little darker. Do a circle here. And then you can go to your guide or you can say, you know what, I know this is in the middle. So I can use this as a reference point. We'll do a guy just to show you. I have my circle here. We're going to make two eyes and they're going to be centered perfectly. So you click on it, go to your guide. Oh, option or Alt, click and then vertical. It flips it to the side and then you do copy. And so now we know that our eyes are perfectly centered. Another trick with eyes or I highlights, you can always click, click, Group, and then center to your art board. And the fact that it didn't move means it was already centered, which is great. So now and go to object Ungroup. So now your eyes are singular. I'll do a little smile for this. I can just do a simple like I did a circle and then took my direct select, delete that. I'll, if I love this, smile, might work. It's gonna be kinda cute here. Yeah, this will be good. I learned recently what Kawhi was. I guess it's like a, I don't know if it's a Japanese style for cute and spread the Japanese word for cute. I'm like, I didn't know it had a name. I've been doing cute stuff for years. I didn't know is called co-PI, but he learned something. So there, here's a cute little sun. And then you notice we have a little bit of space here. You can either make your son bigger or you could do something like this, but we'll just practice a little more with our rotates. And this will be small circles. Alright, so I'm gonna do a circle up here. Pretty small. V ship ex, toggled, my God, I'm going to use this color. And we're just gonna do a nice border here. So I'm gonna go align our board. Alright, it's centered. So we're gonna do like what we did for the res. We're gonna go to the middle center are optional click and now we don't want it, rotate it that much. So we're gonna do a bunch of these. I'm going to say we're going to need about 60. We'll see. So preview to see how much it goes. And say, I think I'm going to like that. Copy. Yep, I think that's gonna be good. So now you can just hold this down. It's kinda fun to watch it go. And then I slow it down just so I don't duplicate it. So there you go. I don't know if I love that color. So I'm going to unlock my small circles. Maybe I did the same as like that. So it's a little more subtle. I don't know if I need that, the circles, but at least it showed you some rotate. I think what I would actually do is make the sun bigger so that it looks. So let's do that. And the reason why I keep things on layers and so I can just like unlock, unlock, unlock. And now I'm not going to drag this bigger because I don't want to mess with it. So I'm just gonna do a scale. And then for scale, scale strokes and effects means the bigger you get the, it'll also bump up the stroke, which for this I want, I don't mind that. Do okay instead of copy. So there we go. We have a nice little son. And then something else you can do for just for some depth. It doesn't take much to add some depth to a drawing. So I'm gonna take take my son. And then I'm going to do, I'll do a highlight because it's the sun should be brighter, not darker. So highlight. Okay, I'm going to paste this right on top. And now I'm going to just copy, pasted it in front again, and then slide this one down. Now I'm gonna do Command X B for behind. And now I'm gonna do, I'm gonna find my, where's my Pathfinder? Why can't I find that? There's Pathfinder. More options and I'm going to do minus back. So now it took a shape that was behind the circle and it's gone. So now we're left with the front circle, which is a highlight. So now I'm going to go up here. We'll make this a little more yellow. And then boom, there you go. Simple highlight. You'd be amazed how like simple shadows, simple highlights like this, just really add to a drawing. And so now I can go and turn my guide off. And there we go. We have a simple son badge. And what we did was did some rotating and also some pathfinder. So here you go, you have a nice sun badge. 7. Tutorial No. 2: Tree Badge: In our next example of our class project, I'm gonna do a shield shape, a shield badge. And basically what we're going to use is the Reflect tool and then some pen tool. And we'll draw one side and then flip it so that we have our full design. So I'll go to my layers. I have guide setup, so I have a vertical layer and a horizontal layer. And make sure those are on there. I'm going to lock my guides and I'm going to draw my shield shape and I am going to draw half of it. So I started my middle and I have smart guides on. So when I hover over something, it tells me when I'm on it like Guide. So I'm going to start at the middle. And whenever you reflect something, you either want to have like a flat a flat surface. Because then when you pull away and you flip it, this is going to be a perfect like round shape. As opposed to doing something that is kind of like, if you flip that there would be a point here which would be kind of awkward. So start your going to Pen tool, click, shift, drag. So you have a nice curve here. Now I'm gonna go to about here, drag option or Alt, click. And then additionally hold down shift. So you have a straight. So at the beginning of the class and I said I teach a class in pen tool for it's called vector basics. A lot of this is covered and it's not really what this class is about. But if you wanted, take that one, you'll, you'll really learn the Pen tool very well. So then when I get to a point like this option or Alt, click, and now I have a straight middle. So this'll be 1.5. We can choose a color here. Let's start with this stroke. I'll start with the fill actually. Alright, so we're going to choose this. And the thing I'm going to draw is a mountain with a tree in front of it. It's going to be very stylized, almost like a sports logo. So we'll just start with a start with any green. And for colors, sometimes I do go to default and start with one of these and then adapt from there. So you could start with something. So now the important thing to do, whatever we're going to flip something like this, is make sure that our center is actually in the center. So I'd take my direct select tool, click that point, shift, click that point. So I have these two points, that's it. I'm going to go to our board center. So that when I click on it and go to transform each and then reflect x on the right side is going to flip. Do copy. That's our shield shape. So you can kind of look at and go, I don't really love it or I do love it. So I'm actually gonna go kinda redo this option click shift. Could I kinda make this wider? So this doesn't have a smooth curve to it, but I'm okay with that. To my Pen tool, click on it. Transform each copy. Now you can take away your guides to make sure that these flipped nicely so you have one shape. So what you can do is click, shift, click, and then go to pathfinder merge. So I have one shape that centered. And then from here, you can kind of modify it. I use my direct select, so I'm just giving some of the points. Direct select again, bring just this part down. I wanted it a little higher. I don't love this, but it'll work, it'll work for now. So once you have a shape that you like, you can kinda go forward. So I'm gonna do copy this shape. Go on top of it. And it's going to be called stroke. And I'm going to choose and toggle to a stroke. And I'll choose like a bright, I'm gonna change this but like a bright green. And I don't want our stroke to go off the airport, so I did and did Align Stroke to inside. So now I've got my main shape and I've got my stroke. And now my drawing of the tree and the mountain are gonna go in-between there. So I'll start with my, my tree. And I'm going to draw my tree just like I've drawn the shield shape where I'm going to draw 1.5 and then flip it. And then I'm actually gonna duplicate that three times to get my tree shape. So I'm going to start at the middle. Optional click, hold down shift because I want my side to be straight. All right, so now I'm gonna go back up here. Go my middle optional click. And what that does is it breaks your BCA curve so that instead of this going off as more curve, it breaks it. So now you have a straight line. I should have mentioned that before. And I do v, i arrow, shift x to toggle between fill and stroke. And now kind of going to look at this. I'm going to flip it to, oh, let's make sure that our middle is aligned and then I'll flip it. Alright, so you saw that moved, it wasn't perfect, so that was good. I checked that. So now I'm going to take this transform each. Another thing you could do is go to your guide. O is reflect option click. And that brings up this box to reflect it. I use this quite a bit. You can flip it horizontally or vertically. And it's kinda confusing because vertically you would think wouldn't be that way, but you're flipping it along the vertical axis. I've got that, I think I like that. Go merge it. Copy, paste in front. Copy Paste in front. Is there a military badge that kinda looks like this? That's not my intention, but we are going to do some alterations so that it will look quite exactly like that. And actually what I could do, I'm gonna go back here, see if I can. I'm gonna go back to where I have something I'd like to do when I do these badges is you do one side, you flip it, then you change the color of what's over here. It adds a little depth to it. So go to my guide o option and click copy. So now what I'm gonna do is choose a darker green, barely, barely dark, barely darker than that. So what that does is it pops a little, you know, it's almost like you're highlight is over here. So I'm gonna do this, shift click, Copy, Paste in front. And then I'll group these. I'll group each part. Because then what I'm gonna do, I want these spaced evenly. So you can kinda do it visually. Say, I think that looks good. And now that these are 123 pieces. You can go to a line to selection and then Vertical Distribute Center. And boom, they moved a little bit. So they are perfectly centered, are perfectly distributed. And I'm going to move this down a little. And now I can do is just do a tree trunk here. You can do this one of two ways. I'm, I'll do it so it's more accurate. You can either draw this by hand or what you can do. I'd like to take pieces that already exist. So I'm gonna take direct select tool. So I only grab this piece. Click it, copy, paste in front. V, shift x to toggle. So now this stroke. So now what I'm gonna do, I'm using this piece again, so it has the same exact curve. It's just more accurate. So then I'll go out to about here. Do I append dual, added a, added a point. So that would direct select. I'm going to delete this. So now I have this minor curve, but now what I'm gonna do is click shift. And since I'm under the stroke, it doesn't really matter where if I have a curve or not. So I'm just gonna draw a straight line, come back with shift. And this is going to be my tree trunk, which I can make kind of a I don't always do like obvious colors like brown doesn't have to be tree trunk. But for this, we'll just kinda just want to have it kinda looked a little boring straight out. So I'm going to make sure the center of that trunk is aligned. And when I click on it, oh, for some reason those are grouped together. Ungroup. My beacon might have been because that was grouped and then I copy that piece. So I thought that was still in the group. So I ungroup that. Now I'll just reflect it here. Oh, optional. Flips it and then copy. So this piece remains and then you get a copy. As much as this class isn't too much about color, I will go into just the basic, one of the ways I kinda do color is I'll go to Color Guide. You all start with one color like this green. I like this green. Or let's try this bright direct select. I'll try this bright green. So we start with that. And then you get all these kind of guides that are based on the color wheel. And you get to say, you know, all of these would be like a color theme, like each row. So you'd say, you know what, I kinda like? Kinda like this one. Some are pretty wild and bold. But we'll just go with trying to think what will go with here. This high-contrast. Same colors as swatches. And so now they show up here. So now you can just say all right, my trunk. And you don't have to stick to these exact, but if you stick kind of in the family of it, you get some interesting things cuz you might do things that you wouldn't have done otherwise. So you may say it adds really bright, but maybe I like it. And then you can use that and then say, well, I'm going to be this is going to be a shadow of the trunk, so I'll do that. And that's like, I like this. And now I'll finish this badge with just kinda using, using a shape that's going to make this shape turned into a mountain. So I'm going to use negative space, which is kinda cool. I noticed my tree trunk is not on the right layer, so I'm going to cut and paste in front, so I just keep everything on the right layer. And now I'm going to do a new layer to do my mountain on top of shield. And now I can either draw this kind of behind the stroke and do whatever I want, which I think I'll do. Or you could use the existing shield shape and add and take off points just so you're using what you already have. But this I'll just draw from scratch. So start at the top. Go here. Optional click shift. And then what I'm gonna do. See my center. We'll see if this works. So far I think I like, I like what's happening. So I'm pretty much drawing the sky and then my shield shape becomes the mountain, which is the, this shape forms the mountain. Alright, so I'm going to make sure that these points are in the middle line to our board middle. And now I'll go and reflect, which is o optional, click OK. Cancel. So that happens if you have your direct select tool on, which is probably good, good to show you that it's good to make mistakes so you guys can learn from them. So I got my arrow V, click, oh, option, all click and then vertically reflect. So now my background has now turned into a mountain, which I like, I think that's cool. And then something you also could do, which I should have done first. Like when I was making this first tree. You could take, I'll just do this real fast before we wrap up here. Direct select. I'm just gonna take this piece. Copy. Or I could do is make a new layer so it doesn't group at this time. Highlight. And so now I'm going to paste that in front. So now I can, I have this curve which is perfectly aligned with the tree. And then I'm just gonna do a slight something happened in oh, I just stroke. That's why. That's why. All right. So now to fill so now I'm gonna do something. You know what I think Wouldn't it goes against my color theme, but that's okay because you don't have to stick to that. It's just a guide. Gonna do like a maybe a yellowish green. Actually highlights kinda that way. So I'll flip this. And instead of copy, I'm just gonna do okay, because I just want one. So then if I had done this on each one, this is not gonna be perfect, but that's okay. And then you could have something like this where you have just a slight or you could have it on both sides. And little details like that, Little Shadows, little highlights. It really helps, it helps bring this to light. So this was a cool little badge, I like it. So this showed you some Pathfinder, some pen tool and reflect. So here's our second or second batch. 8. Tutorial No. 3: Monoline Badge: Okay, for our third example, third tutorial, I'm gonna do a line badge where everything in the badge, it's gonna be a circular badge, is gonna be the same line stroke. So it's going to be like a monoline design. So I have a five-by-five art board circle. It's five-by-five. Go to my layers. And now I'm going to contain everything even though we have a circle, I'm still gonna contain everything in a another circle. And so I have a stroke. Go to circle, go to the center, click, optional shift. I'm going to go way out here. Just so it's like a frame in a frame. So that's, so my design is going to be contained in this. And I'm gonna do a tent like a camping scene. So now I'm gonna do a tent. So this is going to be a lot of reflecting and a lot of Pen tool work, and a lot of centering on the art board as well. So this is a little different than I'll first thing I'm gonna do my ground so I know where to kinda start. I'm gonna start with the ground level. I'm going to do it way down here because I want the focus to be the tent. So when I'm working with strokes, I wanted to be accurate. Like I want to click on the exact points. So I have smart guides, which are the little words there that say like path. And then I can go in and say, you know what, I'm right on this line. And so I'm going to click, hold down, Shift, go to path. And I know my line is from one line to the other. So that when you look at this, see the reason why we see a little bit of that circle coming out because I didn't have it lined up perfectly. And this good at back here, there we go. And now should be good. So there's my ground level. Now I'm gonna do my tent. And so when I reflect objects, when I'm drawing, I'm usually do draw one side and flip it with something that's a stroke. I'm gonna start start with it. Do the for arrow, shift x for fill. It toggles the stroke and fill. So now I have a filled item. I'm gonna go direct select Click on this point and this point aligned to our board, align center. And now I can flip this. So I'd go to my guide, odor reflect option or Alt. Click, and then I'm gonna do a vertical copy. So now had I flipped a stroke, it would have done my spacing would have been off because when You flip things that are strokes. It's the spacings weird. It skips because of the stroke, so can't really explain it, but it's little odd. So I usually flip things, merge it, and now I'm going to sample this line width. And so now I have one perfect triangle for my ten. Now I have a ground line and the bottom of my tent. So I'm gonna delete this bottom line from my tent so I don't have duplicate lines just to make it cleaner. And now I'm going to add some details to my tent. Like a line here. And let's zoom in a little. Like a line down the middle. And then I'll do like, I get ten steak there. I drew 10 to reflect. Copy, not one on each side. And I'll do that when you're drawing lines like this. You don't want to, I'm gonna make a triangle here for the flap. I don't want to click here and connect it to this line. So I use a lot of layers just so I can click here and not join it with that. So it'll keep this its own, like its own triangle. So it doesn't join. It is helpful. So that uses many layers as you want to keep things clean and organized. So I have a triangle there for the flap. Oh, option role. Flip it. So now I have the opening and the ten. Hello. So there's my tent. And now I'm gonna do some simple water. This'll be pretty easy, just an intro into blend tool. So I'll do two lines here. I'll go back to. All right, so I'm gonna do, actually, I'll show you a few tips here. So I'll do a line out here. It's okay that I'm beyond my circle. Copy Paste in front and this is going to, so I'm going to have two lines for water. Make sure they're centered. And now I'm gonna go up to effect distort and transform zigzag. Do smooth and I don't want it to be this rough. It's not the ocean. So I'm going to do 0.07. And this is just like trial and error. You can just kinda see you do smooth instead of corner so it's not jagged. And now, right now it's for ridges per segment. So now I'm gonna kinda up that. So it's a little wave here. I think that's good. I like that. Okay. And so right now, this is just an effect. It's not the actual, These aren't actually curved. It's just an effect put on it. So what you wanna do is go to object. Expand Appearance and you can expand appearance is important. It plots I'm Zi Jue different effects. Expanded appearance is how you get it back to normal. So now it's 2D stroke lines. So I can either put that in a clipping mask, which I think I'll do that. So I'll take these two, group them. And now I'm going to take this stroke. So I'm going to unlock it, take the stroke, copy it, paste it in front and turn off my stroke. So now my shape is in front. My lines are in back. Shift click so they're together. And then we're going to do Command seven to do a clipping mask. So that puts these wavy lines which were grouped inside of the circle. So now let's see what will fill this out. So I'll do some cool at the sky. We'll just do a quick and easy. We'll do Clouds even though it's night. Because I'm going to put stars up there. We'll do some clouds. So you could do this a few ways. If you love the Pen tool. You can kinda do something. And that's like Dan, Ariely go, Kellogg's like trees or clouds. That's okay. So I love doing this. You do one side and then you flip it. I just loved symmetrical stuff. Just looks cool. It's kinda northern lights issued its kind of clouds. It's, and so now I'll do stars. And so the theme of this is one, is one stroke width. So I wouldn't want my star to be too big or too small. You kinda want it the same width. And and this isn't really something then I'll, I'll brief. I'm not going to have this star is in the same place on each side. I think it's kinda cool to have a little, little random. She, I think I'll do something here just to show you. So I'm going to do one more thing. I'll do it on my star layer. You could do this with a triangle. Let's see if this works. So I did a fill and I'm doing one quarter of a star shape. So glider art board, make sure that's centered. Now what I'm going to do it or reflect it. Take this. I'm gonna go to the top of a's here where it says path. So I know I'm at the top of it and now I'm going to flip it again and we're gonna do horizontal, so flips up copy. So now I have a star shape. I'm going to make sure I have all of those pieces. Merge it. Let's see if this looks good, might not bad. Yeah, it kinda serves as a focal point. What I changed my mind about the stars. And I do want them to be the same. Stars are tricky as random as they are. It's like I'm so picky when I do stars in Illustrator. Well, let's do these. Know that you can always change them, but I'll wrap it up here so I'll flip this so that it's vertically flipped copy. Think I could go back and forth about how I want the stars, but you get the idea. Maybe I'll delete these and just do some lines in the sky. But this gives you a good idea of the monoline style. And then you can always go in behind here and fill these in just with your pen tool of color. And that's kinda cool to make it pop. So like you could just color the tent something and then everything else just stays the same. And that's kind of cool to have a popup color like that.
