About This Class

Dive with me into the world of patterns and textures! 

This class will help you notice all the beautiful textures and patterns that surround you. Although those types of images are usually not that difficult to shoot: this class will make sure that you can take those pictures of yours to a professional level. Why? Because the ways you can use this kind of images are incredibly versatile and exciting!

This class is aimed at students of any level. There is no prior knowledge required. You only need to have access to Adobe Photoshop to successfully participate in this class.

1. Introduction: My name is Nicole Sheen's and I'm a visual artist from the Netherlands. Educated and cross media design. For the past eight years, my main focus has been photography and moving image. Today we will go out into the wider doors, a k a. The city livin and nature places nearby to help with our cameras for some great texture and pattern photographs in scores, I'll share with you my tips and tricks on where to harmful gorgeous textures and patterns. What to keep in mind while shooting them? What tools are handy to get along with well goes processing in photo shop and the versatile ways thes types of images can be used in your work. So grab your camera and let's go. 2. Let's go: So today we go out with our camera to hunt and shoot textures and patterns. Not that you don't need to be an Emmy fancy place at all. Off course. The Botanical garden will give you more often exotic result, but it is definitely not necessary. All the images that I will show you in this class I have shot just by stepping out of my door in my hometown ends today in the Netherlands. No matter where you are, the world is filled with gorgeous textures and patterns. Fields, trees, water worlds, the ground, even trash cans can be a great providers off these types of images. I chose pattern and texture photography as a topic for this class because I want to show you how incredibly versatile and useful these kind of images are. There's so much you can do with them and many ways to spice up your work with them. Whether you are interested in the field of photography, art, interior design or graphic design, they are really so many possibilities. So let's talk about those possibilities first, because that's what I'm most excited about to share with you 3. Textures & Surfaces: So let me tell you what I do and did with my texture and pattern photographs. I live in the Netherlands and sell my photographs on a Dutch platform called Back on the Move. They allow customers to choose their favorite picture and off a prince and various sizes and on various materials, depending on where you live. Chances are big that there is probably a similar service in your country as well. For several years, I had an at the shop with photography products, greeting cars and prince mainly. But then I wanted to take it a step further. I decided to print my favorite abstract texture photograph on organic cotton. It turned out absolutely gorgeous, and I'm still in love with that fabric. I created the brand and started suing my own family products such as pillowcases and fabric baskets. They turned out lovely, and I was and still am proud today that I have created something unique off course. There are many people out there making pillows, bags, baskets, but I have created my own fabric that no one else had, so that was pretty cool. However, I found myself sitting behind the sewing machine a lot making the same kind of products over and over again and updating my Web shop and suing didn't quite make me happy. And with two kids to raise as well, I have no time left to actually go out and take new photographs and truly be creative. That's why I decided to quit theater shop. I hope that the story inspires you to think about new possibilities on how to use your photographs. What if you print your image on fabric, wood, metal or other materials? What can you create that is unique and truly you? 4. Patterns & Portraits: when you train your eye to notice those patterns surfaces in an urban or natural environment, it is is well off. Great use when you are going to take pictures of people to show you what I mean. I'm going to introduce you to fellow Dutch photographer Anke Vagina. I love the way she embraces the combination off patterns and people good news for my Dutch students. Anke has written to fantastic books on creative photography, and if you are an interior enthusiast like I am, check out monkeys Blawg, Zilber, Blau, Clinton L. Because her home is a stunning, happy explosion off patterns and colors. 5. Graphic Design: Let's look at this Pinterest board that I created for this class together. It's about using texture and pattern photography and graphic design. And I think these are just wonderful examples to show you. I'm a big fan of minimalism, and I truly believe in less is more and simplifying. And this is just look how strong this is. This is such strong graphic design. Music feels better, and then nothing else. Just the texture shot off the goose bumps on the skin. Everything is said with this. I love it. Look at the other examples. They used textures off grounds. They use the pattern off limes, the texture of ah, cut through veggies. They have gorgeous ice cream. This is just so yummy. I can't get enough of it to look at it. It is so simple, yet so strong so often in graphic design, you see that they use a sort off peak through technique masquerading words or letters, and and the texture is peeking through. This works really well and provides you with strong image 6. Hunt & Shoot: So let's finally diving to the part of actually shooting the photographs. There are a few things to keep in mind when shooting textures and patterns. We want to try to fill the whole frame with that interesting pattern or texture. While this is a nice flower shot, it is not so good as a pattern shot. When we want to take a pattern photograph, we want to make sure that we have sharpness everywhere in the image. We can achieve this in a few different ways. First, we want to make sure that we're positioning ourselves the right way. You want to place your camera in a 90 degree angle with your subject. Now, if the subject is like in this case flowers that differ a lot in height, so some of them are close to your camera's lens and others air close to the ground, try shooting with high aperture. For example, F 11. When the light allows you to do so, the higher the aperture, the larger your depth of field will be, which is the range of your sharpness. And if there's not enough light and you don't have a trifle with you to lower the shutter speed and the higher I so doesn't help either, and then just move on to the next subject. Textures unusually easier than patterns. So let's talk about patterns first. Like, for example, this bush full of flowers that I have found in the park. The flowers had a lovely minimal range of color tones, as you can see from yellow over the creamy color into orange, so that is what I wanted to capture. Now let's look at some of the challenges that came with their picture. We see that the way I photographed the bush here. There's a big hole down here that interrupts the pattern, and there is a pink flower within the yellow part that stands out, and those empty branches do not look nice. So first of all, I have to try to position myself in front of the bush in a way that eliminates as many of thes distracting issues as possible. In this case, I had to get a bit closer. Let's have a look at the next job. Yes, this one is much better. I could eliminate all the distracting things I just mentioned already during shooting. There's off course a lot you can do in post processing, but always try to get as much as possible. Done already with your camera. There is still one thing I do not quite like about this image. I really love the color palette off the flowers and therefore I find the bright green off the least distracting. So that's one thing that had to be done in post processing. So here we are in photo shop, camera raw, and all I want to do is I want to bring the green tones off the leaves, closer to the warm yellow orange tones of the flowers. For that, I go to this tab and I select the huge term to change the greens. I pulled the greens in the direction of yellow and then I can play with the yellows to go even more in the direction off orange, for example, get the effect by desire. Then I can have a look at the temperature and tint to tweet the color a little bit more. Let's see what that does in this case. Oh, yes, I like it when it goes more into the gente right there. Yes, this looks This looks very nice to me already. I think that my vision aqua in there. Yeah. Did you look at this close at the leaves? There was some aqua in there. You see that right on the top of the leaves. So always check up close if you get all the colors in the area that you want to change. So I pushed the aqua into greens and I changed the greens already to go into the yellows, and now it's Look, it looks. It looks nice. So first, let's play around with scale and positioning of the image. For that, we duplicate the layer. It's always the safest to do. We skated up a little bit and position it in a way that the pattern already nicely feels the whole frame. Now this looks already very nice with We can pimp this image even more and make it better, because, as you see, there are still some areas that could use some attention to make this one cohesive pattern . And then our I will not get distracted some holes or branches like this one. And so now we go and play around with those lovely tools right here. Spot healing, brush patch to and the clothes, too, of the one sweet are going to play with. Let's start with the spot healing brush. I always use a brush with a soft edge. Pick a nice size that's suitable for the area. C Want to tackle and let's turn Let photo shop do its magic. Oh wow. This one turned out already Really good. Most of the times you have to go over one area several times in a little patches so that it actually looks natural and realistic. But this is extra going really well already. So let's take the clone tool for another part. I hope the multi and select with left leg my source and then I go to the place where I want to place the source image. Feel it up. No, um, I'm a bit off spot Yuning, and this is quite big saying this thick French. Let's try another one different to the patch to I will just select the area that I want to change like this. No, I drag this into place that seems like this fit nicely. Have this experience de select and well, well, not too bad. Let's do it one more time. This doubly bluish right here. Let's say yeah, work. So let's have a quick recap on what the tips were on. Shooting pattern and texture photographs. We talked about trying different positions to eliminate destructing details, limiting the color palette, looking for subjects without big differences in distance shooting. With a high amateur, we want to shoot in the 90 degree angle to the subject, and we're trying to avoid big holes and shadow spots within the pattern. 7. Class Project: Let's pick our favorite pattern or texture shots we created during this class and take them one step further. In this class project, we will create a mood board together. You can do this manually off course by printing out stuff and playing with the pieces, but we will do this now with a digital, too. I love the free online, too called Myla Note. I find it very use of friendly and the clear, minimalistic design if it makes me very happy. So here we are at middle note dot com, and I have already created a mood board for this purpose. I started out with one of my favorite recent texture shots. It is a shot of a raw but at the same time very soft tree trunk I encountered in the woods . I combined it with another texture shot of mine, as well as photographs and artwork from other creators to achieve a certain mood and color palette I was looking for. Let me quickly show you how incredibly easy it is to add images to your Mila Note Mood board. You can, of course, use this button right here to add or upload images off your own, but even better, you can just open your Pinterest, look through the images you collected that you like and pick one that fits the color scheme or mood you're looking for. And then you can simply drag that image into your Miller Note Mood Board. As you see, I have also extracted certain colors from the images to create a color scheme that I can now use in so many ways. If you are familiar with graphic design, you know that this is super important to create a cohesive design or branding and an interior design, for example, I could decide to buy one off the photographs I admire as a large print for room and then use the colors I picked from this photograph to incorporate it within the same room through paint or accessories. For example, let me quickly show you how I extract the colors from the images. We grab a note, drag it into our mood board and type in a random color hacks coat like, for example, hashtag f f f f, which gives us a bright yellow. There we click on it, go to color custom, and there is our color picker to Now you can go search for the color you want choosing exactly the pixel of your choice. Click on it and you will now have the swatch as well as the hex code of the color of your choice. I hope this move board will inspire you to use your pattern and texture photographs in a creative way that suits your field of work.
