1. Chords Course Intro: Hi, guys. Hey, don't welcome to this court theory course. During this course, you're gonna learn all about how cords made how to work them out for yourself on which notes in a scale are gonna make up these particular chords. During the course, you're gonna learn how to do a major chord, a minor chord, a minor seventh card, A major seventh chord. 1/7 chord on augmented Onda diminished court also a suspended fourth. Now that sounds so complicated, but it's not. There is a theory behind cords, and this course is gonna teach you everything you need to know in order to work out cords for yourself any time you like. So I hope you enjoy it. Let's get started. 2. Lesson 1 The Major Scale and Major Chords: Hi, guys. Welcome to lesson one. In less and one we're going to just briefly go over what it is that a cord consists off. So firstly, Accord is described as two or more notes put together. So if we do, this thing is accord. If we do this, this is a chord. If we do this, that's Accord. If you put all these notes together, that's accord as well. So any more than one, basically. So what we're gonna do? First of all, in this lesson, number one is get over what's called a C major scale. Now, this is very important because I'm gonna teach you everything you need to know about the theory of chords based on a major scale. So, for instance, let's start with middle C, which we did if you haven't already done. The Courson learned to read music or play the five piano pieces. Go over and check them out. That will help you with this a little bit. But if you have great, I'm going to start with middle C on. What we're gonna look at notes wise is the gaps between the notes. So, for instance, his middle sake, if we get the next note. The D There's actually two steps between there now. A step in music is called a semi tone. Two steps in music 12 is called a tone. So two steps, that's the tone. And then we're gonna use this note, which is a thistle also has two steps from the last note. So that's the tone as well. So we've got toe tone and then we're gonna go eat f. The F is nothing in between. So it's just one step that seat f That's a semi tone on. Then we're going to go two steps. So another tone to the G there on, we're going to go two steps again so that I on two steps again to the B and then they just one step, one semi tone to the sea. Okay, so in music, you can see there how this scale looks earned. There is eight notes and we're gonna call these eight notes degrees of the scale. That's an important term to remember. So we'll just go over that once more just to make sure we're gonna go tone from C, which is day a tone from day, which is a a semi tone. Just one step toe F onda tone turn again to half steps. No, the tone and then a semi tone that gives us our major scale. Another theory in major scowls is identical for everyone. So once we know that, we've got the tone, the tone, the semi tone, the tone, the tone, the tone and the semi tone that works with every scale, every major scale that's ever existed. So that theory is standard across the board, which is great to know because you're gonna need that later on. So remember, toe tone, semi tone, tone, tone, tone, semi tone. That's what we need to remember. Okay, so you've now got alright notes, which is C two c. They sound like that. Okay, So what we're gonna do is look at these as degrees of the scale. So we're gonna call this number one. Number two. Number three. Number four. Number five. Number six. Number seven on number eight. Okay. Degree number 12345678 Okay, So if we play the first degree of the scale, this is called the root note. This is say, for instance, this is called C major scale. First degree of the scale is always going to be see on the eighth degree of the scale will be a duplicate, but just one octave higher. So that's eight notes higher ox Mediate. Okay, so degree number one, what we're gonna do is we're gonna hold that down. Then we're gonna pick, Do we Number three, which is the on. Then we're gonna pick to green number five, which is the G. So these three together sound like this on days A C major chord. So we've picked number one number three and number five from the scale C major Now in any scale, in any key or as long as it's a major scale. Number one number three and number five will make the major chord from that scale. So, for instance, D major, if you pick number one number three and number five d major court, we'll come back to that later. Let's look R c. Major scale. We got 1234567 and eight. That's really good. Easy to understand so far, I hope if you have any questions, please drop me a comment. I'll help you with everything that camp. So number one, number three and number five c major scout. Now let's have a look at these notes in details so we know what they are. We going to see We've got a on We've got G. So if you haven't had keyboard lessons before, but you're interested in doing it, it's probably worth heading over at this point to the learned to read music course that I have on skill share as well. There's a link in the comments below we use in C, E and G. But the interesting thing about this is because there's three notes and we complied in three different ways. So I'm gonna come to that in lesson to let someone was just a brief overview of how the scale works. Lesson two is going to be a little bit more involved, so thank you very much for watching and I will see you on the next one 3. Lesson 2 Inversions: Hi, guys. Welcome to lessen. To lessen two is all about looking at the cause we've made on trying to move them open down the keyboard. So let's go back to our original C major court, which was number one number three on number five. That's going to sue Got C, E and G. So we're gonna pick any I'm gonna pick a G. But let's pick a difference. See, this time, different sounds, same pitch names, the A, G and C. So Samos here just in a different order. So what this is is called It's called an inversion. So we've got the roots inversion, which is the always the route notes on the left on, then the third and then the fifth. And then what we're gonna do is going to move this root note this see up to that's up there on that gives us what's called the first inversion. Okay, now I get a little bit more complicated. We're not too much. So what we're gonna do? We've got e g and C, and I want to move this e a. So that's up. I just throw. This is another sound that a C chord can make a C major chord. So with this we've got G C and E. That's see second inversion. So let's go. But right back to the root court first inversion. And then we're gonna tear this for sorry, that's the root court. And then the first inversion is a G and C on the second inversion is G, C and A. And of course, it doesn't need to be stuck to just this area. The keyboard. These see cords can be played anywhere, anywhere on the keyboard it all. So if you like this sound way, sound like sand, all of those are correct. But they might fit the song better. There you're gonna learn. So the reason we're doing this course today is so that you can work out your own courts from the theory that you understand. And then look at a piece of music with chords on big toe. Work out what notes there. That's the whole point of the course. So we've done a C major and we've done a C major in the root position. C, E and G were Dennis seem a J in the first inversion, which is E. G and C and then we've done a C major in a second version, which is G. C and A. Now he's just follow up three different sounds all the same course. So depending on what it is you're playing, you know, you might. I prefer one of those versions, but I hope you understand that the inversions work now. That's a very, very short lesson. But we are. Don't we know all about inversions? So let's go on to lesson three. Thank you very much for watching, see when the next one. 4. Lesson 3 Minor Chords: Lesson three. We've so far done a major court, which was then 123 on the five. Now we're gonna change that major chord by moving this middle. Note the number three down, one semi tone to the left. So gives it a sad sound. This sound is called a mine. This corgis see mine. Now, when we look at this, if you go from a major to a minor, I would call that three flat because it's easy to remember. So 13523 flat. Totally different. Sounds a bit more dramatic. Yeah, very good. Okay, so 13 flattened. Five. This works exactly the same with the inversion, so you can put the bottom note at the top there. So let's try that. This'd e flat, then g then see this Ever listen, he flashy and see Let's do the same again. The second inversion so works exactly the same as a C major chord. Other than that is no longer a it's e flat. So g c in e flat. Uh, there we go. That's our second inversion. In fact, you might have heard something similar to that in the past called Moonlights in Arctic, but probably down here. C minor. Let's look at the root version again. Number one, number three flat on number five C minor Now, no matter what major scale we're in, um, we can always work out our courts. No problem. There is theory behind. It's not just made up for a sound. We get in every scale. Look d major, If you number one number three flat and number five, there's D minor. We're gonna come back to that latest Don't worry, OK c minor. There's our card routine version when we picked number one number three flats on number five. And then we've done our first inversion, which is three flat, five on bites on between our second inversion, which is five eight and then three flat again. So that's how to work out a minor chord bearing in mind. We're only working on the C major scale at present. So we've now done see Major on D. C. Minor. Very good. So you've worked at a major and a minor. We've got some other things to do, so let's move on to lesson four. Thanks for watching this one 5. Lesson 4 7th Chords: welcome to lessen four. Lesson Four is gonna add a different element to this. So we're going to start with a major chord number one, number three and number five. But this time, what we're gonna do is we're gonna add the seventh note. Now, to do this, we need to flat in the seventh. So we're gonna go 1234567 on bring it down one step or one cemetery into the left. So we're gonna add this note, which is B flat to our major chord. So there's our major chord on that. This note here, this gives us see seven. So it's a four. No court. Of course you can miss. Some of you wanted to give you that kind of sound, but basically for not called. Let's put a C in the base as well. Si seven. So that's how you work out 1/7 court. 1234567 Make it flat. Add the major. Okay, We can do the same with inversions against, so we move the seat, it's up e g b flat c and then we could do again G b flat C e on Because you've got four notes, we can have another version B flat. C e she. That's the seventh chord. Remember the theory. Get your major scale. 12345678 There the eight degrees of the scale. We're gonna pick number one, number three. Number five and number seven flap on theirs are caught C seven. But when you see Accord with the number seven after and that it's just a letter on, then number seven, that's how you work it out. 135 and then seven flat. So, so far, we know these three courts We know a major. We now to work out a minor way, know how to work at a seven. We've got two more chords to cover these lessons. A very, very short. But there's a lot to cover so that we caught a few lessons. Okay, so let's move on to less and five. Thanks for watching 6. Lesson 5 Major 7th Chords: Hello, Less than five less than five. It's all about Cord called a major seventh. No, this one's quite easy to work out. Starts with the chord that we already know. The major court number one, number three and number five And then we just have number seven. We don't flying at this time. There it is. I love this court. This would be written as C Match seven. Sometimes it can be written as C Capital M and in seven sometimes see match seven. It wouldn't have a lower case m if it was just cm seven because that's a different court. So got 13 five and seven Lovely sound. A different version we've done before. Just maybe the bottom notes that it's up. Very nice course with these cause you don't have to just play all four notes together. You can make you might find something that you really like. You probably heard songs where they do this kind of thing. Still a c major chord there. So we've now got C major seven 1357 But the cords that we know so far Major on 35 minor 13 flat 57135 and seven flat on See Major seven. That's excellent. So there's four types of chords say, bury mind we working at the theory based on the scale alone. So then we're gonna move on to different scales and show you how to work out the rest of the courts. So let's move on to the next lesson. Thanks for watching. 7. Lesson 6 Minor 7th Chords: Hi. Welcome to the next lesson. Go under the cord for you. This time we're gonna use the theory based on a mixture of two of the cause that we've already learned. So we've learned a minor which is 13 flat and five on. Then we've learned a seven, which is 135 and seven flat. Now, I want this note here, but I want to make this a minor as well. So what we're gonna do is flatten the 3rd 13 flat, 57 flat C minor seven sometimes were in the sea. Men seven sometimes written the see Lower case M seven. That's put a bass note with it. Nice courts C minus seven. This is 13 flat 57 flood on. Of course, you can do the inversions again, So let's bring the bottom note to the top. It's a lovely sand. Let's bring the bottom note to the top movies on the flat up to here. And of course, because it's got four. Note. She got four different versions. Very good. Of course you can play this anywhere on a keyboard. Slowly. Court. Okay, so you've now got C major C minor si seven C major seven C minus seven. We've covered an awful lot in a very short term adolescence, but that theory is gonna take you through everything you need. So what we're gonna do in the next lesson is look at another scale on Apply the same theory just to see how it works. I'm okay. Lesson 7 Same Theory Different Key: welcome to this Last sent this lesser and we're going to look at a different key. Eso we've been working in c major. All of the theory that I've shown you so far is exactly the same. Don't worry about anything is going to be straightforward. So first of all, we're going to start in a G note, and then we're gonna use our theory that we use before that you can see on the screen there where we went tone to Tepes Two steps again to atone. One step to a cemetery. Two steps to atone. Two steps to atone, Aunt Two steps to atone on one step to your some atone. This gives us RG May disco tone tone Senate tone tone, tone, tone cemetery. Okay, so you can work out any major scam from that theory alone. What we're gonna do just for a couple more lessons, we're gonna look at making these g different chords on. Then I'm going to explain to you a bit later on how you can sort of have a look accord sheet and work out what? The notes all for yourself. So, in this G major, we're going to use the same theories we did before. So for a major chord, if we're working at G major, we're gonna be picking number one. Number three and number five works exactly the same. Comport G note with this. Any left And if you want. Okay, We got the inversions as we did before. So you bring the bottom note to the top. This is a G with the B and E there. That's your first inversion. And the second inversion. Bring the B to this up there. D, G and baby. That gives you the theory exactly the same as the C major scale. Just because we've changed key doesn't mean that the theory has to be any different. Theory is always identical. Remember that. Okay, so we're gonna go straight into a minor chord, which is one three flat on then five. That sort of mawr dark sound C minor on again with inversions. Bring the bottom notes of its up. Bhatta noted that stuff again. Same theories before then we did. I called chords 1/7. So 135 now the seventh now in G minor, G major. Sorry, is this one have sharp, but we've got a flat in that. So bring it down. One some its own to the left gives us the sand. This is a G A major seven. Lovely sound works again with all the inversions on. Then we have another chord, which was G minus seven. So large G seven, but flattening the 3rd 13 flat 57 flat G minus ever happens to be one of my favorite courts . If you do this card and then go to a C seven snow sand G minus seven, si seven. Okay, so we've gone over the tops of chords major with a minor. We've been seventh with the major seventh with a minor seventh says five different types of chords that we're going to go for on this course. If the course is very popular, then we'll go on to more advanced cause and they'll be under the course available down the line there. Step. Thank you for watching this lesson. We're gonna go into the next one now. 9. Lesson 8 Trying different keys: welcome to this lesson. Hello again on So I've spoken to you before about it. Doesn't matter what Kira in the theory is exactly the same. So for this lesson, we're gonna look at, say, three major scales on. Then look a theory to apply what it is that we've already learned. So, for instance, I'm just gonna pick and just stop anywhere that we're going to stop. They're so that's and I were going to apply the same theory. So the tone, tone, cemetery tone, tone, tone, semi tone, remember, a semi tone is to step. So let's do it again. Turn. So it's a tone is two steps not cemetery. Two steps, two steps, one step, two steps, two steps, two steps, two steps. So there's Oscar a major. There's are eight notes off the scale, so the degrees so again, if you pick number one number three and number five that gives us are a major called Hopefully, this is starting to make a bit of sense. Now, a major again inversions way could just keep going up the keyboard with those we could do a minor. So one three flat from five or very sad sanding court. You could even try doing this. You could do the top two in the bottle. Very popular in lots, piano ballads and stuff like that. We can do our seventh chords. So 135 on There's number seven but we're gonna flatten it. Seven Honey is a seven because we're in the key of I and we've started on the root Note that a minus seven. Yeah. So that theory works exactly the same. So let's do that in. Let's pick it flat case, we're gonna pick B flat. Same again tone, tone, semi tone, tone tone. So cemetery exactly the same theory. So if you saw a piece of music and it had a B flat chord in it and he just said B flat, you could work it out if you didn't know it by looking at your scale picking you turn, turn, semi tone, etcetera on, then finding out what the notes are in that scale. I am picking number one number three and number five B flat court. Easy. Let's make that B flat minor. So it's 13 but flattened on five. And of course you can do your inversions by bringing the bottom notes in its up again. That's very good. And there's to be flat. Seven to be flattened. That seven There. Leslie B. Flat, major, 7135 and just seven. I c minus seven. Bring that some down and the three flattened again. Excellent. So you can see that no matter what key bring, we can work it out. So on our next sister classes were going to be doing some exercises, looking at different keys on, then working out what the notes are for those particular courts. Thank you very much for watching. There are this lesson is all about something called an augmented court. So an organ it'd court starts off with the major that we worked out in the first lesson. The first lesson was number one, number three and number five of the scale. So let's get that on. This was a C chord C major chord root inversion. That's that that we're gonna do is we're gonna sharpen. The fifth note like that gives it a bit of drama. This could be written in two ways. It can be written a C plus or C or sometimes see Orc five. So C plus, we're gonna call it or see Augmented. Still with sea bass goes nice next to an F court. So maybe if he didn't say, uh, see augmented. Yeah, it's good sound anyway. Augmented. So if we were in the key of F way Big number one number three on number five sharpened. There's f augmented. Uh, it's got almost scary kind of feeling. Let's do in another key. Oh, be flashing them. But number one number three on number five There was sharpened flats, a lamented Mr and I 135 But sharpen this time. Look, just one step to the right. It's nice. I augmented. So there's a theory. Number one. Number three Number five sharpened gives you an organ vented court. Normally, it would lead on Teoh, not the fourth note chord, if you like. So C f I meant it. Death so sort of general court sequence from an augmented. So we know the theory of that. And I want three and in five sharp or augmented. Thanks for watching this lesson. Very simple. Straightforward is as noble. If you've got any questions, please ask. I've been more than happy to help you see one the next one. 11. Lesson 10 Diminished Chords: Hello. Welcome to this lesson. This lesson is all about Accord called a diminished chord. Let's listen to the sound. Sounds quite strange. Really good. Very, very useful court. So the theory behind this in the easiest way for us to do is to start with a minor court. So when we did our miners, we did number one, number three flat on before five. A czar mind accord I know we're gonna do is we're gonna flatten number five. And so they're keeping it in the normal fifth stories in the sea lice thistles called C diminished or see dim. You'll see it written on the music. Of course, this theory works with every major scale away through. So let's practice it in B flat thing. That's number one number three flat, like we did in the minor before on a number five flat things has the If you've ever been to a theater like a pantomime at Christmas time on the bad person comes out and everybody boos and hisses. This is like an English thing. I don't if you do in other countries, but yeah, they're the cause that they use B flat diminished. Let's do it in the key of E major number one. Number three flat on number five. Also flat. Oh, and that's e diminished. Very straightforward. Okay, let's go to one more K just to make sure everybody's getting the right theory. Building G major number one. Number three flat number five Flat G diminished. Remember, when you look in accord on a piece of music and you're unsure what it is if it says dim after it or diminished, you need to use this theory 13 flat five flat in the key that you're in. So it, for instance, it's a you got e flat major, and you wanted to know e flat diminish. You'd pick number one number three flat on before it flat on. There's the flat diminished. Very straightforward. How you understand as normal. If you got any questions, police feel free to ask on to the next lesson 12. Lesson 11 Practical Example: Hello. Welcome to this lesson. This lesson is all about, say, for instance, you looked at a piece of music and you wanted to know how to play all of the cords on the grab that I don't know. Let's let's just look at these courts C E minor F G. Okay, so you got a couple of ways of doing this. But we're going to focus on the way that we've been going through the course. Firstly, if you got see and it just says, See, it's a major chord, which is number one, number three and number five of the Skull way. When we put a bass note with that, our second chord was a minor. So you'd work out the scales with the terms in the Senate, own using the major scale and then number one number three flat on the number five for a minor, a minor. And then we've got an F course. This is just a major call. Get a scale 13 and five way. Let's change the last one to a G seven. So number one number three, number five on number seven flat. So that's how we dio each chord. Just to make the theory absolutely clear. When you see Accord written on, you want to know it. So let's let's just pick around noon Court B Flat Minor. Here's a scale for B flat major and then we're gonna pick 13 flattened. Five. That's the theory. So 13 flat five B minor I have included in the Danlos and resources for this course, a sheet with all of the major scales on there, which you can once you know the theory like 13 flat five for a minor, you can look at the B flat scale and go one three flat, then 50 yeah, there's b minor on. Is that quick? You'll notice you can just download. Those are not some big for you so that you can print them off the news and with your keyboard or your piano. Oh, ever instrument. You want to play chords on basically. So let's go for another example, say we were doing D. Major has a cord. We'd need to do number one number three and number five there is, and then we're gonna change to be minor. So first of all, we need to know the major scale. But we can work that out using the tone tone, cemetery and etcetera. Or you can use this charts that I've given you wear going for B minus. We need number one number three flats on before I always double old were just with the base . Now give it a bit of extra depth on. Then we're gonna do a G chord. So, G major, there's a scale. I know the scales off by heart, but you may have to just think about the turns. Turns semi tone. Except you just have the sheet in front of you and just count up 13 and five. 135 There it is, G major on. Then let's do an accord. So a scale a major. Sorry. There it is. Number one, number three and number five. Way go. So that's how we get to the courts. Okay. Just a quick example of outworks. That was So we're going on to the next lesson. We've got one more called to learn in this course. You'll see what it is in the next one. Thank you very much for watching 13. Lesson 12 Suspended Chords: Welcome to this. This is the last lesson in this court theory course in this court theory course. So far we've learned how to do a major, a minor, 1/7 a minor seventh, a major seventh on augmented on a diminished. It sounds like a totally different language, isn't it? But each different lesson is broken down into that particular style of court. Every all the way through, you've got a resources folder, which gives you a list of all of the major scale so that you can pick out the degrees of the scale in order to give you the cause that you want to learn. So it's It's very, very straightforward, but it does sound complicated, Believe me. Musical theory always sounds complicated, but there is always a mathematical reason that it's there. So our last chord for this course is called a suspended fourth. Now, this is a nice court. You may have heard this kind of thing before. So suspended force with But Major Okay, So suspended Fourth is really, really is to get your major chord, which is 13 and five I know we're gonna do is switch number three from them before Bega suspended fourth. That's the sound, of course. This works exactly inside. Look at the notes C, E and G for the major change the for the efforts. 3 to 4. You can do this with inversions, so we've got C, F and G. We could do F, G and C or G C and F because there's three knows. Sounds a bit like Star Trek. I think I'm not sure not really watched it back on and go to the major court. It's a nice sound. You have heard it lots of times before in different pieces of music. So suspended fourth. Let's have a look at the end of the key. Let's Dio and I don't know d Major, let's get the major chord. 13 and five They were gonna move number three to them before find Ambassador Major suspended. Fourth is sometimes were in this sea sauce for or DCIS for in this case. But the the part after the letter would be sauce for sus four eso to go through with the major. We've done Mylar. We've done minus seven with a major seven. We don't augmented. We've done diminished. If I've missed one, I do apologize on. I think we have also done source for which gives us a whole range accords. Now this in your armory is massive for you because you'll be able to play accompaniment for basically anything without having to ask people what the courts are. You've got the theory now behind you to be able Teoh, look at the sheet and think right on our toe workout that court. If you know how to work out that cord, you start getting used to nice sounds, you know. So once you can look at a piece of music, say, for instance, you wanted to play in a band. This course is perfect for that, because you may be just starting out and you want to play in a band, but you don't know all the courts. You might not have a great memory looking at chord charts. It's quite a difficult way of learning that's play chords, understanding the theory of doing it and then just been out to get okay, turn, turn 17 you know, and then going Oh yeah, I know a major.
