About This Class

Plastic is everywhere and without plastic, our lives as we know them today wouldn't be possible. Plastic is found in everything, from food packaging to cosmetics, buildings, rivers - and also in our intestines. The problem with plastic is that it doesn't degrade in a foreseeable timeframe. In fact, plastic from 50 years ago is still around in its original form. Further, plastic also flies, swims, and separates into tiny particles. And although it can be recycled, it has a finite number of recycling possibilities and rounds. Plastic is causing an immense threat to nature as we romanticize it and its wildlife. And get this: By 2015, the world had already produced 7.8 billion tonnes of plastic — more than one tonne of plastic for every person alive today. Just imagine that in your backyard.

In short, our dependency on plastic is creating a problem for our environment and ultimately for us. Swimming plastic in our oceans is causing a threat to all sea life. Plastic in forests and fields suffocates animals. And even we, as humans, are affected by plastic through changing hormone levels and an addiction to a carefree throw-away life. Plastic is changing our way of life in unprecedented ways.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

Luckily, there are more and more people who realise the detrimental effects of plastics and do something about it. They reduce their overall plastic consumption and contribute to a call for less single-use plastics. Their voice is getting stronger and more and more governments have declared a war on plastic. The initiatives range from a radical zero waste approach to a monthly challenge of living without plastic.

In this class, I give you a hands-on guide on how to reduce your overall plastic consumption. I speak about what plastic is and how it is turning into a problem today.

The majority of the class looks at simple, intermediate, and advanced lifestyle changes. These changes are practical and you can begin to implement them immediately.

And if you need some more food for though I will also talk about the 5 Rs of plastic reduction - refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle - and give you some background as to why they are important to keep in mind when thinking about plastic.

Overall, this class aims to give you a solid starting point to think critically about your plastic consumption. There are many, many ways to reduce plastics in our lives and it doesn't take much to take action. In fact, it only takes a conscious stroll to your next supermarket and a look at your groceries. Although I love bulk food stores, I promise that you don't have to start buying your food only there. It's all in the baby steps.

1. Welcome & Introduction to the class: Maybe you have seen these images and maybe they inspired you to click on this class. Maybe you have heard that vested contributes to climate change, and you feel like something needs to be done all Maybe you just curious about how to reduce your overall waste. And you've noticed that reducing plastic place a mess of role in this. Whatever your reason for taking this class, I welcome you. How would you stop? Plastic consumption has become such a hot topic in recent years that the ideas to do so are in high demand. Multiple governments have proclaimed the bane straws, plastic bags or plastic cutlery. The ambitions behind justice hires our dependence on plastic. The sad truth is that our lives today are built on fast, disposable, cheap, durable placement. Global domestic production is rising from next to nothing in the 19 fifties to 380 million tons in just 2015. In for 65 years, the world has seen a typhoon off piste ticketing all glove, and there's no perfect solution to deal with them yet. And now the extended fell plastic consumption is beginning to show in our oceans. But not everything is lost. And over the past 5 to 10 years, more and more people like you and me have discovered that we play an important role in tackling the problem off fistic pollution. It's our consumer decisions which contribute to the plastic problem. So this class is all about how to make wiser consumer decisions, which changes you can make to reduce your plastic consumption. On the whole, I've collected a number of practical ideas for you to think about with regards to your general consumption's. I talk about food and personal care as well as shopping habits and that take away coffee cup. My mission is to inspire you to use less plastic and to give you practical ideas. The list is long, and for the sake of this lesson, I don't cover every single possible change. I have divided the list into simple, intermediate and determined lifestyle changes, but let's begin with what plastic actually is 2. What is Plastic?: plastic plastic is, and that's the sad truth, the backbone off our current capitalistic lifestyle. Without plastic. Our license we know them today would simply not be possible. Caza made on the 50% plastic. Everything operating with electricity is simplistic pants in it, plastic is even in T bakes clothing, chewing gum and toothpaste. And that doesn't even touch on plastic bottles, containers, toys and bags and all the other things, which have contributed to a public outcry against plastic because they have been found in fish and histamines. Before. I get to that, though, let me give you an hour, a few off the most important properties of plastic so you can begin to understand where plastic is hiding. It's important to understand that there is not one kind of plastic, but rather various kinds. In fact, there 45 different plastic families, each with hundreds of variations. The's variations affect different properties, such as flexibility, transparency, durability and war. To give you an example, polyester is a type of plastic used, including while poorly, properly, and has used in drinking bottle caps and stores, and the list goes on. You might have seen the symbols and your plastic at home, they can give you an indication off what kind of plastic eaters all plastic can be linked to the fossil fuel industry, because plastic is most often produced as the site product off oil and guests. Although new forms are starting to hit the spotlight in recent years, the majority of today's plastic on the planet is derived from a cabin rich chemical mixture , which has turned into a solid structure. The problem with those plastics is that it takes centuries to degrade, which is too, too simplistic back and tents original compounds. And this is where the problem with plastic lies in contrast to other materials, such as cardboard and cotton. It doesn't degrade in a foreseeable time frame. Plastics from 50 years ago are still around in their original form. On top off that comes that plastic swims, flies and can separate easily into tiny particles. You might have heard off the great Pacific garbage patches five part in our oceans, heavily impacted by plastic waste, Or you might a fruit that clothing sheds microscopic pieces of plastic with every washing cycle into our waterways. This easy distribution of plastic has meant that micro plastic has found nearly everywhere on Earth today, including our own intestines. All this kind because in 1907 researchers had found a way to insulate electrical wiring with plastic, which was essential to provide safe electricity to households. Since then, plastic has turned into so much more than just a part of electrical wiring. As I said, it's a nearly every product we used today, the by far largest sector to use plastic. Today's packaging 42% of all plastic or 146 million tons, were used in packaging in 2016 alone. Pageant packaging in the sense means everything from a plastic bag to would take my coffee cup. And since packaging has generally a very short life spin half afford plastic garbage. Today is from picketing. With this in mind, let me give you another mind boggling number. By 2015 the world epicures 7.8 billion tons off plastic, more than one ton of plastic for every personal life today. Just imagine that in your backyard. Now, at this point, you might raise your eyebrows and size something like, Yeah, but that can come for me because I'm recycled autistics and while I congratulate you on that also have to tell you the sad news that plastic is every finite number for second rounds. On average, a piece of plastic of it is recycled around or less than two times. After that plastic ends up in the landfill. The reason is simply that plastic deteriorates with every recycling round. Plastic bottle can be turned into another plastic bottle off the same quality glass. Aluminium, for example, can be recycled clone countless times without a loss of quality plastic canned. Since its introduction into every home on the planet, plastic has been champion as the easiest and cheapest material to have around. Plastic has replaced glass and paper and most food packaging and storing Lester cast replaced ceramic and copper and pipes and light switches and plastic case replaced woods around windows and doors. The reasons for this replacement were simply that plastic is much cheaper. It's easy to work with lighter. In most cases, it's more durable than its counter pants, and that makes plastic ideal for growing economies, households and industries. Yes, you can see plastic is the backbone to our economy and our life as we know it, Today we have to stretch fire and bites to find alternatives, and even then it's difficult to avoid plastic. The good news, however, is that more and more people around the world have come to realize that plastic is a problem. It's unclear how this realization came about, and it's probably different between you and me. But the end result is the same. We try to avoid plastic as much as possible. This movement has been compared to the movement against acid rain as CFC in the 19 seventies, Governments around the world have declared a more or less trusted warren plastic, some with bans on plastic bags, other with a face out of plastic cutlery, plates and cups. In Australia, for example, paper straws have replaced plastic ones in just every port plastic one in many restaurants in just six months. This is a massive and fast movement against plastic. On a smaller scale, more and more people join the Sierra based movement or complete a plastic free July. The's personal joys us go hand in hand with minimalism and decluttering following my re condo in her Netflix show. In short, resistance to plastic is growing, and I hope that. That's the reason you have joined this class today. I'm an advocate of plastic free, minimal living, and I want to help you to reduce your plastic usage today and this journey. It's important to keep one thing in mind. We're not striving for perfection. As I said earlier. Plastic It's everywhere, and you cannot eliminate it from your life unless you move into the woods and live without electricity. It's about baby steps and increasing awareness. If all of humanity uses, once true less. Today we have saved seven billion straws from landfill or 2.9 million tonnes off plastic. 3. Simple lifestyle changes to use less plastic: Let's get to the heart of this class how to avoid place taking your everyday life just to remind us, I said. You want to be able to afford all types of plastic because it's used in so many different areas of our lives. Just take the device you fortune. We own red now and has plastic pants in it. Without them, you wouldn't be able to use it. So this part now is to show you what you can do to avoid plastic. Don't be discouraged, though strife or changes you're comfortable with, rather than a huge plan she uncertain about and drop after a week or so. It's about becoming aware of what's going on around you. I've divided these practical S R changes into simple, intermediate and determined changes in each section. I will give you a number of suggestions to try out. Let's get started on some simple changes you could do to your life right now. Awful places. Let's start with your letter books. Do you have one of these stickers yet? If not get one, it will keep a lot of unnecessary plastic out of your home, often for email newsletters off your favorite shops instead. Next user usable cup for your coffee rather than take away coffee cup. There are a number of options here. You could actually sit down at a cafe, or you could buy your reusable cop you can carry around with. Most cafes were even give you a discount. If you bring your own cup and why you're sitting down to drink your coffee, why not consider eating in once in a while rather than getting take out? If take out this year only option. You can bring your own containing her, too. But then the name of healthy eating I would always opt for dine in rather than take out in the same vein as avoiding taken by containers and coffee cups. Try to award using a blessed extraordinaire on often personal experience that, in particular, kids really like drinking with stores. But luckily, they're great options now to let them have fun without producing more waste. Stainless steel and even glass straws. Those are were usable injustice, much fun, if not more than plastic ones. My next tip is kind of a no brainer for me. Reusable water bottles In most places, drinking water is higher, regulated than bottled water and safe to drink. Obviously, you need to check your local conditions. But environmentally speaking, a buying bottled water is irresponsible. It creates more waste and requires long distance transport just to get you to drink something you can have fried the earned then and reusable water bottles come in so many shapes, sizes, forms and colors that there really is no excuse to rely on bottled water. A simple lifestyle change with a huge environmental effect is to switch from liquid soaps to shampoo on solid bass. You might be surprised by the suggestion, but using so pass for showering and washing hands of what's avoids a lot of plastic packaging. Let's take a look at the packaging off liquid silvers is Bassel when boarded a supermarket , and liquids are container is a clear plastic container, usually off type one plastic PT. It contains the soap, which has pumped up through a short straw and comes out through a little nozzle. That's a whole lot of plastic above so power ever. It's wrapped in paper, one in clear plastic. That's all the packaging for bar soap, Plus in some Kaiser's of our Sobel last longer than a container of liquid. So now if you want to continue to use liquid soap ah, highly Richard to start looking around for refill options or large quantities of So these were great less waste, and we're just the same and if possible, you can be used to container. Multiple times. Last but not least, are relatively simple. I have cell changes to use canvas or paper bags rather than plastic shopping bags. A lot of shops have started to charge customers for plastic bags, So not only will you be having the environment by not using a plastic bag, but you also be saving money. And if you have to buy your bag, go with paper rather than plastic canvas. Shopping bags come in so many shapes and colors today that it's actually a lot of fun to get one. At some events, you can even get them for free, or you can make your own. The possibilities are endless here, and it doesn't have ways, and it doesn't have to be a canvas bag. Any kind of for usable back will mean one bag, one plastic back less in the world every time you go shopping with it, 4. Intermediate lifestyle changes to use less plastic: Now let's move to the intermediate changes you can do in order to use less plastic in your house and life in the last section. How old you mentioned canvas banks. You can extend that idea and get yourself a set of produce banks. They know common old shapes and sizes, and I haven't accounted a supermarket that doesn't accept, um, you don't have to go super offensive here, either. You can solve them yourself from old curtains or similar lightweight material. Just keep an eye on the wage because you will be paying for that every time you buy fresh, producing them there. Many personal key items you can easily replace with more sustainable and less plastic options. Some ideas have bamboo toothbrush ins, toothbrushes instead of plastic ones, reusable pads or menstrual cups instead of normal pets or panty liners and tampons. Stainless steel razors instead of single use plastic ones. Solar temple bass instead of shampoo in a bottle, handkerchiefs instead of tissues wrapped in plastic. There, no captain bats with wooden stakes. There's even toilet paper, which isn't wrapped in plastic. They are wide years, and I will get to some in the next section. But this collection should give you a pretty good idea what to look for. The next time you're in the personal care, I'll let's move on to another area of our lives or plastic. Place a heavy role, and that is clothing. You might have heard that some recycled plastic gets traded and turned into fibers. Toby evolve into clothes, one off the top, close. For these recycled fibres, it's flees. The problem is not that, no, it's not the recycling plant here, but the fact that every time you wash an item of clothing woven with synthetic fibers the item bull sheet so called micro plastics into our waterways Currently there is no way to know how much micro plastic gets into our waterways this way and what impact this has on our environment on us. At the same time, it's difficult to avoid those micro plastics and clothing because they're in so many items , and I also cannot and will not discovered you from ever bring a warm fleas jersey again. But I do encourage you to do this by buying 2nd 10 items. The reason I'm saying this is because A these items exist in the world and will contribute to less waste unless micro plastics and be because they should've. When you shake the majority off their fibers, it's in general a good idea to purchase clothing secondhand because it lessens. The pressure on natural resource is, and those people selling those items we buy for next to nothing and added in a discussion on plastic. Secondhand clothing definitely has a place because it reuses items which already exist in the world rather than create new items and old ultimately waste. And I would like to stay on the topic off second handful while and include more sectors in it. It's not just clothing, which you can buy second hand. In many countries, you can now find good single 10 stores for things like books, toys, kitchenware, furniture, tools and so on. And if not in a store, they are online platforms in the style of eBay. To find other secondhand items, check your local platform for good deals on just about anything. If you can make it a hep it off. Checking secondhand stores and online platforms for things you need. Before going to a store ordering it online, you can significantly lessen your plastic footprint because he won't contribute to new plastic being produced. If you require larger items, especially tools, it's good practice to ask around. If you can borrowed rather than buying it, some places will high out large tools. Community walls can also be a great source to find something to prevent, which you don't absolutely have to own yourself. Talk to your neighbors, friends or colleagues the next time you need a tool. Both 2nd 10 Shopping and boring not only saves resource and then keeps plastic got off the world, but I can Onley serve you a lot of money. Wanna taste as a little effort? Probably the same you would put into the put in to find the cheapest deal to purchase. Whatever it ISS, you were thinking off the last area to tickle among these immediate intermediate lifestyle changes as the idea to refill rather than to buy completely new. You can apply this principle to simple things like tomato sores, a mop, toothbrush, heats, liquid soap, laundry detergent and other items, which come as refill if at all possible in your area. You can also start a shop and bulk food stores buy food stores are stores where nothing is prepackaged sport, where you bring your own containers. In some stores, you can buy nothing that is packaged and other stores you can. Depending on your locality, you might have to go with what's available. If you're lucky to have access to a non package store shop there as much as you can, there's a good chance at the stores independent while supporting small scale agriculture and local farmers. So not only will you help to keep plastics out of your house, but you will also support your local economy. However, I know that back food stores are not the norm. Yah I currently have don't have access to one. Nevertheless, even in a normal supermarket, it's possible to limit the amount of plastic going into a shopping cart by larger amounts. Look for tens, choose food and glass rather than plastic and off course. Use produce bags 5. Determined lifestyle changes to use less plastic: let's move to some determine swaps, which you can experiment with. I have to warn you, though, that these plastic few alternatives are very heavy in the D. A Y department. The reason I mention this is that you have to be a very comfortable both doing something yourself and B. You might have to watch your budget. It can be really easy going overboard with the ingredients and materials you would need for each. Let's start with a swap, which can be intimidating but requires most liking. No special materials. It's a simple as springer, your own containers to the butcher or your local deli. I've had sales people looking at me funny, but so far no one has refused to use my containers instead of their plastic ones. But it might take some convincing to get them to accept the containers. You might have to work all your charm to make your food picket toe. Have your food pecked straight into your own containers and just a FYI, a claim about hygiene. It's not really a claim, but an excuse by the store to force their containers on you. Just smile and reply that you contain it so clean and let you take full responsibility for that. My next tip is to make an alternative to cling. Film. Sometimes well, sometimes. Also known as Glad Rib. I have two classes. Yon skill share may teach you how to make food reps with cotton fabric and BCE mix in the main kinds. I only use be specs, and I'll show you how to do them basically. And I also included a section on how to fix mistakes, the advance class or showed how to use additional ingredients. Now the nice thing about these food dresses that they're fully replace cling from with a natural alternative. If a food Web ever gets to a point where it's not nice anymore, you can throw it in the compost and it will turn back into soil class. Food grabs are also very individual. And my great gift Let's move on to the skin care department, a section where a lot of plastic it's used unnecessarily. How would you mentioned using above soap instead of liquid soap? If you want, you can stay all this up and make your own soap. Making soap is fun, but it does take some skill care and involves saloon improve, and it can quickly become one of those hobbies I won't you about at the beginning where you can spend a lot of money. But they're also very simple recipes which can get you started. Other products for personal care, you can make yourself a deal. Two rounds toothpaste, various kinds of scraps, facemask, pace creams and body butters. I also have a class on skills she how to Make Body butters, which works with very simple ingredients. It's a marketing sexist to think that we need all those things that on skill and skin care products, we mostly don't take toothpaste. For example, my dentist always says that the best toothpaste in the world won't replace bad brushing technique. It's about brushing you teeth and not about what you put on your brush. Some people use banking sought after breast that teeth. I've experimented with coconut oil and Syria tall, and I'm currently using a toothpaste that comes in a metal tube rather than a plastic one. Similar to the personal care items. You can also make your own laundry detergent and still dish soap. There are a couple of options here, and I'll show you my two favorite ones. In autumn, I took my kids out to a local park with a horse chestnut tree. We collected about five kgs of horse chestnuts. Some go to engender craft projects, but most of them are drying in all workshop because holds chase nuts make an excellent cleaner. I cut up some so some nuts soak them overnight and bulla, I use the Lakers as laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid and to mop My floors were when I ran out of chase nuts. I will go back to using so Berries, my backup alternative for an all purpose cleaner. So Berries are native to Asia and, unfortunately, carry a social footprint with um, there reports that in some parts of India, where so Berries have been used for centuries, people now can't afford them because more and more people in the West are using them. So please keep that in mind when you think about so Berries and use them wisely from a sustainable source of from a fair trade association. With all that, said, Sobers can like chestnuts, be used for clothes, dishes and floors. Some people even used them a shampoo. They don't require soaking overnight and look instantly, and the empty shells can be composted. Another option for general cleaning around the house is plain old vinegar and baking soda. I use vinegar and for the really dirty stuff baking sort of exclusively around my house, and it works great. The reason I'm mentioning these natural cleaners is that cleaning products are among the biggest sources of plastic in our house and on the topic off cleaning. There is another source of plastic in your house. You might be surprised by kitchen sponges, almost really taken aback when I read about the fact that kitchen sponges are full of plastic and end up in landfill in 99% of all cases. Luckily, there are a couple of options here. Number one is to replace the Spanish with a wooden brush. If you play close attention, you might even be able to get on with compostable bristles. I recently found a coconut brush, which works perfectly flying, and it's fully compostable. Number two have reusable sponges like micro fiber, close now. These aren't fully non plastic, but because they are washable and therefore usable, you can get a lot of use out of them. It's not ideal, but at least you avoid sending a full sponge to bet landfill every other week or so. Number three is a knitted dishcloth. Now I'm not in big knitter about These claws are perfect Beginner's project. They are a couple of good retort tutorials on YouTube. When you search for knitted dishcloth, I won't attempt to show you how to do it because I'm not good enough. But just a pass on some knowledge that I have about, um, use 100% cotton or cotton bamboo blend for your young, not wool. You want to be able to wash the close when you've used them and wolf will shrink. Okay, Those are my favorite spots for more less plastic your life. Before I move on to the next section, I want to mention two things and those are back food stores and repairs all you mentioned about food stores and I just want to use the opportunity to and cabbage you again to shop there. If you have a good bark food still close by, make use of it. In my experience, Ah, bag food store loan can dramatically decrease the amount of plastic in your house But I also know that not everyone has access to one, so don't feel discouraged if you don't Like I said, I don't have one around where I live, so I have to shop at a supermarket for most of my food. What I try to do, though, is to get at least more fruit and veggies and most often, my meet at a local farm. We have a veggie box subscription, which gives us a good box every week for about six months of the year. If you can find something like that, make use of it. In general, I can only encourage you to look around, ask around and find out what other people do. You might be surprised, and the anything of one to mention is ancient, but it tends to be forgotten these days. Repair repair before throwing out. We're getting something to replace what's broken. When my phone broke two years ago, I got a prepared rather than buying a new one when a super broke on my jacket, I got the separate place rather than the whole Jacob. When my kids ripped through their pens, I pitched the mob or turn them into shorts for the summer get creative and tried to make stuff go. The extra mile, in some cases, is even cheaper to repair than to replace. 6. The 5Rs of plastic reduction: Now that I've shown you some simple to more determined lifestyle changes, I want to introduce you to the foundation. Awful. This the five hours off waste management that was five hours are refuse. Reduce, reuse, repurpose Recycle that we break that down for you. Number one is to refuse, and it's being the first step me instead of the most important one. Refusing to use plastic means to avoid it completely and therefore keep it from being produced in the first place. Just a single egg. Sounds simple example. If we refused to use a straw in a milkshake that is one strong less that's being used in there for wasted and might seem benign. But it easily adds up, and that's the business side of things. If you take refusing to a personal level, you will notice much less stuff in your house. If you refused to take a plastic bag at the shops, you will have less plastic bags at home. So refusing is not just a great way of saving plastic from being produced in the first place, but also to keep your house less cluttered. I think at this point it's important toe also highlight the power of US consumers. It might seem like no big deal for you personally to refuse using a plastic to use plastic cutlery. But if 50 people do that each day, the business will notice and consequently require less, and that decrease in orders will be then be noticed by the producer. And maybe you can see where this is going. So please don't underestimate what it means to refuse something. The next off, the five hours of vice management is to reduce. If you are unable to refuse plastic, try to reduce the dis much as you can. The easiest example I can think of years. Frozen peace. You can get them without plastic, but you can choose which sites you will get. If you get a K G rather than 4 250 grand bags, that means less plastic overall. Similarly, if you know of a product that's overly repped, maybe think off on eternity of to that product. I keep seeing one more products that only erupt in their needs and not for show. That's the product. I go for the simple focus on producing less plastic raised on reducing our consumption of goods wrapped in plastic can also help to send the signal to companies and producers, as well as to help keep unnecessary plastic out of landfill. My simple tip is to try and buy products in glass, tin cans or wrapped in paper count board, and also to look for larger bags of products where plastic is unavoidable for you rather than buying small servings, the next time line is to reuse. We're using means to use an item that is over the around rather than encouraging new production. I talked about second tend invented shopping and does this exactly wherever using comes in . It's about making use of an item that we already have in our world rather than opting for something you. One example that comes to my mind it's my exercise mint orm or the lack off one. I use an old camping met, which my husband got as a teenager. Also, although we still use that Metro camping also use it to do my crunches, and there is no need for me to buy a new exercise. Mettetal, can you see where I'm going with us? We're using means to turn around and use something new position and your possession until you reuse that This principle applies in particular to the syrup based movement. In case you were thinking of joining it, there's nothing zero waste about going out and buying all new things like water bottles, coffee caps, containers and so on. If you either already have thumb off, he only think you might need. Um, we're using means first and foremost to look around to check what they're already is before we step out to get something you. The fourth hour is to repurpose your plastic waste we purpose ing something that would otherwise go to lend. Who can be extremely fandom rewarding. I'm constantly searching the Internet for new ideas of how to repurpose all sorts of products, not just mystic. It can also help to think of her purpose ing as extending the life of a product.
