I have previously talked about the basic, physical (and virtual) tools to introduce you to Photography and its bare minimum when it comes to photograph your products / items on Etsy.

But it's more than just the tools you have available and choose to work with. The type of product photography you select to present your product will be a make or break between a purchase or a pass.

It is a team work in fact: Combining good tools with the type of photography that fits our product!

That's why having an idea of types of product photography is essential to identify which types are more relevant and best fit with the products we create, produce and sell.

1. How to Style your Photography_INTRO: Hello everyone. Let's carry on talking about photography and your Etsy shop. Hello, my name is Philippa. I am an artist and I'm also an Etsy shop owner. My shop is called paper crafts and I have been selling on Etsy since 2016. In this series of videos, we have been talking about how to improve our listings in a way that they can perform better. And most recently, we also talked about reviews, start rating cases open against you. And recently we also talked about photography. In this video, we will be talking about how to style your photos. I will be presenting you seven photography styles that you can get to know and recognize which one identifies best with your brand, with your shop. And hopefully, you can get some tips on how to improve your photography within the style you choose. So let's do it. 2. Consistency & the Basics of Product Photography: Styling your photos allows you to tell a story, the story of your product, and you want your photos to speak directly to your brand. Consistency is key on XY. So the more cohesive your shop looks, the more likely buyers are to browse through your items. If you have a sharp, has the same style, the same 5s, it will encourage a potential buyer to browse and search your products. They will be curious and they will want to see more because your image, the image of your Etsy shop is cohesive and appealing and we want that the product is the star of the photo. So while photographing your products to upload on your IT shop, it's essential that the focal point of your photo is the product. The surroundings or the surroundings are also important. But the main focus must be the product because that's what you are selling. You're selling the context. You're not selling the background. You are selling the products. You can use models, real models, real people, if you are photographing clothing or accessories, and probes and backgrounds must complement your product. So they must all work together. They can't be opposites in a way that they will react and impact negatively. 3. Colours, Backgrounds, Textures & Seasonal: Let's start by talking very briefly about colors. We want the colors of your photo to go within the colours of your product, but also with the colors of your brand to complement to be one that fits with your Etsy shop, with your brand. And that complements your product. Same thing with the back ground. We need to play well with the backgrounds because we want them to work with harmony, weed, your product. It's okay to use different backgrounds with different colors and different textures. If that's war, the feel of your shop is like. But when you do that and when you use different backgrounds, it's important that you keep in mind if those backgrounds go within the line of your prime being. So just to contextualize your little bit, because I have been talking a lot about branding. If you have a certain color scheme for your shop, I will give you my example. I have white, pink, and black. Those three colors are the main one for my logo. But the products that I sell are very diverse when it comes to colors, because I paint people and I paint clothing. So each Commission will have a diversity of colors depending on what the models are wearing. So what I tried to do to embrace and enhance the product, to show what the product is. And we'll style it according to the purpose of my product, which is a watercolor portrait. So it splits to presented hanging or frames. And I tried to be as neutral as possible with my backgrounds. Other example, if you prefer pastel colors, because you want to have different colors in your background, then it's important to keep it has simple, has possible, and maybe select two or three colors that you can alternate within your different products for different items. So that when a buyer is browsing through your shop, they will see a diversity of backgrounds, but they will recognize that you're using the same tones of lilacs, a pale pink, pale green. So they will see that there is a cohesion and they can identify that you are using many colors. Oh, but they are all pastoral. So there was a, there was a harmony, there is a cohesion on the terms that you have selected for your backgrounds. So the atmosphere of your shop must be that all your listings, even though they can have different colors, different textures, the atmosphere must be unified. You need to look at your shop. And while he was scrolling in it to make sense, the color schemes that you are selecting. On the background, for example, must flow with the brand of your Etsy shop. And you should be selective in the colors you pick in a way that you don't take attention away from your product. We want to drag attention into your product. Same way that we need to take into consideration, what colors do we use? What kind of backgrounds to reuse? Lighting is also essential when we are photographing our products, we need to think, what is the file that we want to transmit to the potential buyer. We want something very, very, very light, or we want something a bit darker, a bit moody. What goes well with us? What goes well with our IT shop? We need to think about these questions before we take the photo and before we upload, we need to make sure that if we are going for a moody kind of photo that we carry on the same vibe throughout other listings in our shop, the same for textures. What fits best with our projects, is the background with a plain texture, a clean one, or mistake one. It'll all dependence with what you're selling. What is the story behind your brand? What is the story behind the shock? And a little bit of your own personality. Just because we gravitate to words, certain colors, or certain textures, we need to make sure that they fit with the product that we are selling. If you sell seasonal products, it's also a good idea to change your photos a little bit with seasonal props and seasonal backgrounds, but the idea remains the same. We can do some tweaks in our backgrounds. If we do seasonal products, that it's essential to keep it simple and to keep it consistent. We want consistency. If our shop is very minimalistic and if all the sudden for Christmas, we changed all our listings and we change and turn everything Christmas related, silver, red, and green related or future buyers will look at that and won't be sure if that is your constant five, if there is a very short seasonal vibe. So that's why when we are photographing our products, it's important to be consistent. It doesn't mean we can't be diverse, but the diversity needs to be within our color scheme. The textures that go well with our products, the colors, the backgrounds, and the probes we use. 4. Tips for Backgrounds, Colours & Props: If you want you to see and if you were just starting the process of photographing your projects. And if you are unsure, if you haven't found an identity yet to your brand. If your brand doesn't have a voice and it's something that you are still developing, then the best thing to do is to photograph your product against a simple, plain background. You can't go wrong with that. Because all the attention will be focused on your product. You will be able to upload a very simplistic photo that shows what the product is. And then as time goes, you will be able to develop your idea and your concept and your story is for your Etsy shop. Another beginners take would be to use soft colors. So very light greys, ivory or white. They compliment Most of the products. And also it's a way to start looking professional while he was still adjusting and adapting to photography. What can you use for backgrounds? It's really not that hard. It's not that complex, and it's pretty easy actually to find plane backgrounds. To start with solid poster boards, placemats, fabric, marble tiles, or vinyl backdrops. Let's just give a quick reminder regarding props. Probes can add context to what your project is. And it gives an idea, suggests to the buyer how to use the product or how to apply it, depending on what the product is and it's important that you use are relevant to what your product is. Tell if you are selling planners or handmade books. It might be a good idea to have some pens, have some pencils. For example, you know, going to a pair of shoes next to your handmade book, it might turn out acute photo. Use props that connect, that can interact with your item. You can also have a small collection of probes that you play around every time you photograph a new product. So if you have a bunch of paint brushes or pens, pencils, erasers, whatever that is considering, we are talking about a handmade books, handmade planners, agendas, diaries, et cetera. You can use the same collection and the same collection of probes and play with them around in each new photo. It will give consistency because you are using the same props. You can then maybe tweak the backgrounds and you will be showing a different product in a new listing. And now let's go with the seven shots. Options. 5. Style Shots - Style #1 to #4: The style number one is the studio shot. A studio shot is when your product is photographed in a plain white background with plenty of light, a studio shot is recommended to be your first photo. Your listing. Why? Because you will have plain whitespace with your product on top. So there is no way the buyer cannot see straight away. It is. Personally, I think you must see what works best for you. Because if you also have a really good lifestyle shot, then that one can be appealing as well, has appealing as the studio shot. But we will be talking about a little bit later. Let's carry on with the studio shots first, the studio shots, so white back ground, plain background, find your product are also really good and tend to rank higher on Google searches. They give you a clean and clear look. So as I said, there's no way you can't go wrong with it is what it is. The buyer can see it's a product in a bright white background. Simple and easy to studio short makes your product stand out because once again, it's just the product and clear photos tend to set realistic expectation of what the buyer is about to receive. These. Second Style is the lifestyle shot. With these shots, the product is fitted in its natural habitat. With a lifestyle shot, you are able to contextualize how to incorporate the product you are selling in real life. So we'd clothing. If you do a lifestyle shot, you will be helping the buyer to imagine how will they look like wearing that were in that heart, wherein that scarf wearing that jumpin lifestyle shots are also an opportunity for create a scene with the project being used in a painting. For example, if you have a lifestyle shot, you will have the painting framed or not depending on what what kind of painting it is. And it's very likely that you will have a living room, or a hallway, or a restaurant, or a cafe with the painting on the wall to give a context to make the buyer see and imagine how will it looks like in real life, in a space, in an environment. So we are almost creating a space for the project. Complimentary items can also be used. For example, this is great for clothing and jewelry because if you are creating a scene, so let's say that you or a module is wearing a scarf and a hat from your collection. The model can also be wearing, for example, earrings. We do suggesting that not only you have a clothing line, you also have a jewelry line. So it's also an opportunity for you to present other items that you create to partner them with the product, with the main product that you are selling. The third style is the scale shot. Scale shot. We are know as worried about how the product looks. It's more about communicating sizes. For example, these kind of shots are really good for pins, knitting hats, surround makes, and jewelry. Let's use the meeting. Baby hats has an example. If you use a studio shot, you will have the knitting hat against a white background. It's simple. It shows what it is. But when a potential buyer clicks on that picture, we'll see it's a baby hat. But then more questions will show up. For example, how do I know if this knitted hat fits my child? What is the age range for this hat? If you have a newborn, you don't want to buy a needed hat for a three to four year old. That's where it comes. The scale shot, where we are contextualizing and giving an idea of what's the expected size for that project. Same thing for a vase. Let say that you have once again, a studio shot with a vase against a white background. If you have only that, you have, you have no scale to compare how small or how big it is. So we need to have these shots. This shots are important to give us a visual idea of the size. We also should add those details in the written content of our listings. So even though the sizes must be described on descriptions, on tags, on attributes of your lifting. This is your opportunity to visually tell those measurements. And we can also use prompts to contextualize the size is scheduled to have some prompts to give them an idea of dimensions. On. The fourth style is called the detail shot. Detail shots, close-ups to highlight certain products features, these kind of photos of rage to use, for example, in those little details that are relevant or distinguish your product for something else. So with detail shots, it's good to present different angles, different perspectives. So the potential buyer has a better idea of what to expect. For example, with the necklace, if you do a detail shot on the clasp, harassed and can form, I can say this word, clasp. If you take a detail shot of the necklaces clasp, the potential buyer will have an idea if they will like or not, because there are different clasps that can be a make or break between buying or not. Another example, with a painting. If you have a studio shot, you will see the painting and you will see playing back ground. And you will be able to see the colors. But what about the texture? That's where it comes, the detail shot. Because with the detail shot, you will be able to show a close-up and you will be able to show that C, it's a painting, but it's more than a painting because he has textures. You can see the brush strokes that with the studio shot you wouldn't realize because it seems that it's so clime, so detail shots give you an idea of textures. They're almost more tactile and they are focused on important features, unimportant details of your product. The detail shots also show the quality of your products. How if you are using a luxury fabric as a specific metal, the quality of it, it's a way to enhance our projects with what they have best and what important details must relate to it by non-verbally. 6. Style Shots - Style #5 to #7: The fifth style is the group shot. Once again, is pretty much self-explanatory. We are talking about a bunch of products cluttered together. At the same time. It's not all products or everything literally makes that group shots are great for collections. So if you have a set of balls, a T set, for example, for craft supplies, fabric options, and jewelry, for example. So I see group shots, pretty much has a collection. You are presenting, for example, a rink. But on your ten available photos for your listing, you were also presenting the whole collection. So the person who clicks on that specific RNC, we'll see that that ring is actually part of a group, have a collection. And it might engage the potential buyer to actually have a look and purchase more from the collection. The same thing with ceramics or a set of balls. You can present one only because you are selling them individually. But if they are part of a collection, you can show a group photo to let the buyer know that. I don't have just this bowl. I actually have a set. Group shots can also be used if you have different sizes, different colors for the same item. If you have crossed supplies that are the same but in different colors. For fabrics, if we'll have the same type of fabric, but with more options available for colors, ceramics, prints. So it's a good opportunity to say to the buyer that this is the item, but it's part of a big collection that you can also explore and you can also buy. A group shot must be a compelling photo because when you have more than one item, you will create an impact. So a group shot is a good artistic opportunity for you to explore. How are you going to condense and photograph more than one item and make it autistic and visually appealing to the buyer. There's six style for your photography. Is the packaging short. Believe it or not, bias, love, and get really engaged, especially on social media. If you show them the way you pack and walk, walk sort of effort you put into the packaging of their orders, a packaging shot. It's not just a photo of your packaging materials these days. It's more than that. If you have a very specific packaging technique or if you have invested a lot in the packaging of your products, it can be a reason for a buyer to buy from you, because not only you are providing an item, you are also providing an experience when it comes to packaging because it's awesome to get in male more than just the utility bills every night. So if we know that the packaging is appealing, we will be eager to receive it because we want to experience the moment we get it at the moment we open and enjoy. The moment has much as we will enjoy the products. So the packaging is an experience. How your products are packed gives an idea of your branding and let the buyers know what to expect when there is mail for them. Let's not forget that beautiful packaging can also be a way to encourage buyers to buy from you has a gift to someone else, especially if the packaging has a story. If it has eco-friendly resources and even reusable, who knows the more friendly and the packaging is, the more appealing will be as well. Because it's a big trends these days to try to be, has less wasteful, has we can, and many buyers that shop on Etsy do take that into consideration these days. The final style to photograph your items is the process. Short process shot is an opportunity for you to photograph how the product you are selling is made. And a process short is also a way to show to current and potential by this, to show the effort and workmanship that you put into the product that will reach them. Process shots are also very trendy and very popular on social media because people do engage and do appreciate to see how certain products are made. So how do you paint a certain item? How do you need a certain scarf? If that is part of the process short, you are telling the story of how you create the items and you are visually telling the story of the product itself. 7. Quick reminders & tips for a photoshoot_FINALE: I is now that we have the seven styles presented, hopefully, you will be able to see and to tell which ones do you gravitate more towards? Its important to analyze each of them and see how can you photograph in each style. And now, before we finish up this video, let's talk about some reminders of our photos, our listings, and some tips and tricks as well with what we have learned today. So don't forget, you can use up to ten photos for each listing that you upload on Etsy. If you offer different options for an item, you can add in variations in your photos. Let's go back to the ceramics example. If you have a little pot in blue, but if you have that in a different color, you can, within the ten photos, you can upload other colors and you can tag your photos. So the buyer, when his browsing in your products page, they can see that that same pot, even though it's blue, is available in other colors, which can help them to consider buying more than one or find answers prefab and I actually in fact, if you were creating a collection, you must schedule your photo shoot time and make sure that you can meet to wait. Why is that? Because if you have a collection, you want to make sure that all photos of that collection have the same lighting, the same atmosphere, and the same vibe. So you can have a unified collection when you have a product that is ready to photograph, plan your shots. But hopefully now you have seven shot options. You will be able to identify which ones fit your purpose best. So before photographing your new products, show that you have an idea of which style you're using and collect the materials for that style. Gather your equipment, get your camera, your lighting, your backgrounds, get everything ready. Before doing the photo shoot. Collect everything, prepare everything. Pick a time, pick a slot of you're dying to photograph the product, make list if necessary. Plan ahead when you during the photo shoot so everything can go as smoothly as possible. If it's indoors or outdoors, make sure you have good lighting to make your product stand out. We don't want blurry photos, so keep your cameras steady as well. And don't forget the finishing touch of editing your photos. Not too much. Just essential to kind of lifted up a notch. And that's it for today's video. Hopefully, you will be able to identify that some styles will fit better into your purpose than others, which is fine. You don't have to use every single shot. This is just a guide to present you with options when it comes to style, sometimes we need to think about our brand more than what we think personally.
