1. Introduction: So you are eager to create a short film, but you don't know when and how to start. I'm very, I'm here for you. By the end of this class, you will be crystal clear regarding short film making process. I will tell you the basics of production and how to do them from scratch and even how to do them all alone. We will go through steps of production like scripting, recording, pre and post production, uploading, promotion and everything which falls under short film production. And by the end of this class, you will understand how you can write, directly, edit, and promote your short film all by your own. To make discuss more practical, I'm adding a lecture which consist of my personal experience regarding short film production. So hello everyone tiger here. I'm a graphics designer, animator, director, VFX artist and music producer. You can check out my work by going to links on my Skillshare profile. And I will be guiding you throughout this nexus of short film drama in this class. So without any further ado, let's get started. 2. Writing: So the most important thing in a movie or short film is story, venue or working alone. As our director, writer, editor, and recorded, you have to create ease for yourself. You have to write script in four different ways for every single role. But when you are just a writer, you just have to write a story. And rest of the work is done by the director. Let's talk about writing first. How to write? In writing, you just have to write a complete story. The story should be from start to the end. In this, you just write a complete story with character details, their behaviors, background requirements, and everything else related to story. Now the question is where to right? So it's your own choice. You can even write it on a page or Notepad or Word file. Or you can say your phone nodes. Or even you can use our professional script writing software. You can get those offers for free. If you search on Google. If we are doing everything by yourself, then you can write anywhere. But if you are writing it for some company and you're gonna show this to some production team and professional actors. I'll suggest using our professional script writing software and create a detailed script and finalized document, finalized draft print data, and then show that two there. Now if you are doing everything at your own, you can write any vector. You can write on your notes. You can write it in your diary. You can write only some points and rest in your head. So first of all, you'll have to write as 2D, which is the core of short film. Then you have to write dialogues, which are going to be, you can say body of your short film. You also show dried characters, features, and location specifications. For example, the hero is a stout person that strong nerves and a bit arrogance, et cetera. So when you are done with the writing, dialogues and story, you have to move one step forward. And in that step, you have to complete the script as a director. 3. Directing: Now you have the story. So here comes the step directing. So for direction, first of all, you have to make the story FEC, in your resources. You have to select actors, then you have to select locations, and then 10, you have two more the story in your own way. For example, you can begin the movie from middle of the story and then send the actor in nostalgia. And then continue the movie from beginning of the story and then link both of the ends and movie and story at the same time. So everything depends on your creativity. Everything depends on your skills, your creativity, your creative thinking, and how you are going to mold the film. Everything depends on you. And this is important as this is the thing which is going to make your film interesting. It is better to write it down because this is going to help you during recording and post-production too. So also try to list on all of the shorts required. And if you are doing some lithic stuff, list all of the required short separately. For example, if you want to empty background short, you want a static short, you want moving short, you want only Verne actor to actors, et cetera, tie down everything. Next thing you have to do as a director is handling the camera man. If you have a camera man, you have to give him directions related to framing and in camera transitions. And if you are doing camera up by yourself, you can try it. All of this stuff down that at short number seven as you want and zoom in transition so you have to block the frame of camera and everything else. And when you haven't written down everything, read it again and again and again, and keep it in your head before recording. Also, you can practice camera movements before the shortest. This is helpful in pulling out your best. So this was all regarding direction. 4. Essentials: There are some important points which you must check before going for your project. And I call them as essentials. So the point number 1 is tried to choose actor for a character having similar features. This is just to keep the things at real, natural and easy. For example, if you want a character with some arrogance and you choose a person has the same feature. It will be easy for actor to play as we'll be just being normal, been a real and doing himself, but he actually does. So this is just to be easy for actors and you. Next point is tried to choose locations which are easily accessible for you. As this is going to be helpful because this will minimize expenditure of traveling. And you can say and getting the area shutdown for recording and everything else. This will overall minimize the cost. Actually. You know, about loin situation of easily accessible location value may have to take some permissions for recording at some particular places. So mine that there you should go for a location that is easily accessible for public and for you and you have already visited that place. This will make everything hassle-free and tried to stay thankful for what you have. Next point is try to get all of the camera work done by a single person or a single beam. So movies homogeneous. Everyone has their own style. If we have given liberty to the camera man, object, creativity, you'll experience this. Everyone has their own style. And that is why it is better to keep only one person to one project. Because if you change the person who is recording, you are actually changing that creative and for that part. And now your movie will not be homogeneous because both styles will get mixed. And that will be, you can say, unprofessionalism in the movie. So stay professional, give your projects or single tone. And for that you have to give you a one project to a single person or a single thing. And it goes for both cameramen and agitate or you can say post-production team. Next point is try to use available gear and just don't invest too much when you are just doing everything to get experience and testing your skills. No one is perfect. And especially when it's dark, you are not even, you can say guarded the thing. So at this point you're just getting experienced by being silly mistakes, by doing blenders. So for such projects, don't go out of the vein. Terms of investment can even start with your own smartphone. There is no need of Red camera for your first film. If you have read, then go use it. Otherwise, don't overburden jostle. Same goes with lighting and other setups like audio and you can say camera management, et cetera. If you can manage these somehow using some alternatives, then don't go for heavy budgets. Stable if it's necessity. You can rent gear instead of buying new stuff for every single new project. 5. Pre Production: Now comes the time of pre-production readjust, one step away from recording. Now the question is what to do before shooting to keep yourself out of danger? The first thing is short listing that you are gonna do today. It doesn't compulsory that you shoot a whole project in a day. You can divide it into months or even weeks, or even some days, depending upon length of the project. So just list all of the shorts you want to be done on a particular day. The next thing is requirements for the sharp. Check if you have all the stuff for the day, for example, if you want static shots, do you have a tripod? If you want smooth movement, do you have a belly or any alternatives? You're shooting indoors today? So do you have proper lighting setup or any alternatives? You are doing? Vfx staff. What are the requirements for the short green-screen pointers, tripod, stand clamps, anything you require for the day LR model. And don't do this in one setting because sometimes we just mess things at the moment. So try to make the list and then check twice and tries and complete all of the deficiencies. Also, check out the weather conditions if you're gonna go for outdoor shots. And if those aren't favorable, you can change, it should do. So. These are some of the tips for pre-production which you should consider before going onset as our director camera and et cetera. 6. Shooting / Recording: Here comes the day we all waited for the shoot, they will be onset. So I'm not gonna talk much about shooting. I just stick to the basics. You just have to take your gear properly, your camera, your phone, your scripts, you are lights, microphone, headphones are stan, tripod. List. Your green screens, your batteries, your hard disk drives, your SSDs, your power banks, and all of this stuff required. During recording. Make sure to manage ISO exposure, focus frame, and everything else related to camera. Before clicking on record, tried to go to script twice, or tries to memorize camera movements and in camera transitions required for the sharp. Also tried to pick this camera movements twice or thrice before the actual shot. Before pressing the card button. Don't forget to check out the lighting and take some test shots and checkered background sound, etc.. And when you are all set, go for it. 7. Post Production: Now it is time to edit your short film. You have already got your shots and now it's just you and your editing PC. First things first, what are the steps to edit your short film? So basically, you can follow the steps to edit. Like you can go from sequencing minor effects, effects in crow, crow sound design, final transitions, S Effects, Color Grading, credits, and then Export. When you follow this scheme, first of all, you have to check out the script you wrote for editor. You have two options here. Either complete scenes one-by-one, or go for complete filament the same time. This depends on you which method you are going to follow. So first do sequencing. Sequencing. I mean, just grab all the clips to the timeline and start arranging and trimming them according to the script. If you are doing sequence by sequence, I'll suggest you nest every sequence separately. And remember, Nest video and audio separately and then link both of the nested sequences. This is going to be easy for you for arranging sequences for final render instead of a bunch of clips and venues, you have done a sequence pre-rendered so your workflow remains smooth. When you have done sequencing, move towards the next step, which is called minor effects. In this step, add effects if required in-between your Kurtz. This can simply be Zoom and transition, or you can say cross dissolve, et cetera. And obviously you have to do this inside your nested sequences. If you have nested. By the end of this process, you will have your short film arranged completely from start to end with some smooth cards and basic effect. Then go for VFX if any, you have both options. You can either make VFX chart separately render, and then import in your short film project. And I would also recommend this method because this will minimize workload on software. The second option is simply making the VFX chart inside Project and the nesting the sequence. At this point, you have your trough film ready. So let's add intro outro interval and produced by etc. like clips in it. So it becomes more professional. And after that, go for sound design. In some designs, we're going to do two things. Number one is editing sound of actors, and number 2 is adding background music via required and nothing else in this step. Just do it. And you're good to go. After this, add some transitions in between sequences and very are required and venue are done with this. Then add a sub x, and now are all of the sound effects for transitions, noises, background and everything else. And your sharp premise already. But this is splat. This is like raw footage Azure captured and everything is just arranged and have some song, Nothing fancy. So to give it a cinematic look, to give it our real meaning of short run, you have to do color grading. You can do color grading in any software. You can do that in Premier Pro, you can do that in After Effects. Any other software of your choice. If you want to do calibrating in any other software, just export the sequence as a whole and then do color grading. And then you can add cinematic bars and then again add credits and then export. So this is how I personally recommend editing. Sharpen. 8. Uploading and Promoting: Now your short film is complete, is you have your file ready to be shown to public. So now the question is where to post and when to post. Let's first get to know about your audience. And you, if you already are a well-known creator, then you can just simply announce and then post after a few days. But then you are a beginner and you want that more people check out your content and praise your effort. The things change. So first of all, you have to create the hype for that. Start posting stories regarding just shark fin. Begin to educate your audience on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, et cetera, regarding the topic. But the NADH actually announce your topic because that topic is actually core of your film. And if you announce that earlier, people will lose interest in your content. And we don't want that. So do this for maybe a Vk and then release your poster. Post that on all of your social handles Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and also post stories related to them. Also, if you are posting videos on your channel, you may add some five to 10 second part in your video via you tell about your short film that I will be posting it on next, in next month or in a fortnight or after a few weeks, etc. As this is going to help your viewers to get to know about your upcoming project. And there is more than 50 percent chance that they will turn on notification bell so they get a notification whenever you upload the new content. Then post our trailer, first postdoc trailer on your YouTube channel. And then after a day or two can also pose that on Facebook and IGTV. Now you have created enough hype in about two or three weeks, and this is actually the right time to post. Now, upload your short pin on YouTube. And should you lead for a few hours later, for example, you uploaded it on 12 AM. Then you can schedule it for seven AM in the morning and then post that on your Insta story and Facebook and Twitter. And then Moon is you already got some 20 to 30 percent audience who is willing to go to your premier. And after that, begin sharing the link with your friends and family. After our day or two, you will see that your viewers are increasing jet cutting watch time, and everything was in organic way. If you want more audience, then you can simply upload your short-term to IGTV and Facebook and again, post stories and more people will be checking it out. You can also post ads using your trailer video. And if you want to, you can also post that on Vimeo. And this is how you upload and promote your short film to reach maximum audience when you are a small, indie and alone creator, if you have a production team already, do this for you, like uploading and promotions, et cetera. But we are talking about one man Hermann, this class. So this is how you do everything all alone. 9. My First Short Film Experience: So I have explained how to do everything. But the question is that these things really work or not. Uh, you can see, are the steps Verde. So to explain that, I'm going to share with you all my personal experience regarding short-run production. So I myself observe a lot. About a year ago I had a friend who didn't like smoking at all and it used to consider himself a man of strong notes. About three or four months later he started smoking and it was all due to the company he had at the time. I was actually observing everything. He started by saying, I'm doing it for fun actually, and I'm not going to become addicted. But he became addicted. So this was the thing that actually made me write a story based on the model. And I am telling this because you also have to search for inspirations near you. This is, this was the inspiration due to which I wrote a story about a boy entering high school and then moving into NADH cortex and then ending up himself. I had the story about Nigeria go, but then due to logged on, I wasn't able to shoot. Then we've got only five days in which me Render you met and were discarded and finalize 2D or decided locations. And we had only two days left for shooting. On first day we visited all of our day due to some blenders. And that is why we had only a single day to shoot and not actually the whole day, only five hours. We shot the film in between 11 AM in the morning and five PM in the evening. And due to this, my sharpening your defector, actors weren't able to change plots and even we miss some shots because we didn't have the final draft. Also due to the timing, unfavorable veteran lack of gear. We also messed up and ISO and explore your maintenance and many other things. But everything was fine because I wanted to make it an example for everyone that you can do what you want to only from the gear you have. I just had my director script and we just kept shooting and shooting and Mr. Tom shots too, because those shorts or not written down and put only in my head. I also missed my camera condition details which I had in my head because I have not because I hadn't practiced in a time. Fortunately, VFX chart wasn't messed up as that my my dad was my maybe first VFX short, which was on screen after this came the time for post-production. And then I realized that we messed up in audio to and after all of these incidents, these excellent, I learned a lot and that is via decided to make a class and guide you all and also share my experience after a month of production and promotion as explained in metastatic lectures. My short film must complete it and posted on my handles and channel 2. And it went great for me. I was happy with the results. 10. Class Project: So now you have learned almost everything regarding short film production and you must be good to go for your first project. So I would like to ask for a favor from you. Our upload something from your project as class project is you may upload a part of your script if you like, or a clip from your short film, or even a picture of you from recording or editing. But do upload at least to let me know that you learned something from this section. Also, do not forget to follow me on Skillshare as I will be posting a lot of content soon that will be related to the voice-over editing, audio editing, video editing, Premier Pro basics, and a lot more content. And also check out my social handles and tag me and send me your work whenever you post something that you learned from my classes.
