About This Class

In this class, you will learn how to draw a painterly orange with soft pastels.

We will draw a bright orange on a blue background on abrasive paper. For this tutorial, I used sandpaper which I previously tinted with blue pastel and water. You can also use acrylic paint but be careful not to saturate the tooth of the paper too much.


1. Intro How to draw a painterly orange with soft pastels: Hi there, my name is Kate them as l. I am a professional self dot text. And in this class, I will teach you how to draw a beautiful thing to leap orange. We will be using soft best towels and we will add some impressionistic takes on this little piece. So not only is it a study, but you will be able to frame it and hang it on no wall to have a colorful touch to your decorations. So if you'd like to learn how to create this beautiful orange, start the class also UB. Okay. 2. Orange sketch & color selection: In this tutorial, we will be drawing on sandpaper. And this is a sandpaper of 800 grit from a DIY store. As I'm saying, it's not like fast. So it's not tested for light fastness just to clear that up of it. But it's a great way to actually practice. And if you're trying out something new, so just to spend less and actually try out your hand. It's ended surfaces because for example, Pascal mat or Cancel, buttons, touch or uart and papers that have grit to them. They are more expensive than just normal pastel papers. So this way you can save money and actually practice and then create your art pieces like real pastel paper. But this one is just for you. So just to keep as memory that you actually tried something out. So I watched this with light gray, blue-ish grey pastel. Why blue? Because I have a color circle here. So if we look at our orange, so we have the orange and actually it's a yellow orange even I would say the color that we're looking for. And opposite, we see that it's blue, violet color. It has to be worn blue. But I took it as warm blue that has some gray mixed into it. And I watched it over with water as we did with the Black bass style. For example, you can watch the glass tutorial, we have it there, or the dandelion tutorial. You can see how I do that. So I just wanted to save time and actually get to the drawing itself. I wanted to do something bright. So thus, this yellow, orange, as we see the compliment of that is blue and that's going to make the orange pop out at us. And the background, even though it's dull, it's not the bright blue color. It's still going to work for us. One thing to remember when you're making contrasts is that you never put too bright colors next to each other. They have to be some one of the two has to be dulled down. So that's one important thing to remember. Otherwise the contrast is not going to work as well. But let's get to that tutorial. So first, I will sketch up my orange, and this is pretty simple to do. So I'm just thinking where I went my orange to be located as I have the light coming from the right, I need my orange to be slightly to the right just a bit so that I have the shadow here. So I'm looking where I'm going to place it. So this is going to be the lower part of my orange and this can be the highest. So I'm looking, that's fairly round. So this is the shape of my orange and I'm using a pastel pencil. Remember we never use graphite pencil when drawing for the past towel. So it doesn't have to be perfect circle. The less perfect it is, the more of an orange it's going to look, the more it's going to look like an orange. So here I have the cast shadow, so remember that here, and we have that central bit right around here. So it kind of goes up this part and the stock goes here, like so. And then from here we have that leaf coming out. This is one of the pictures that I took when I was doing the photo shoot for my oranges, I actually managed to get the oranges with the leaves at the local supermarket and I was like so excited about believes that had to take photos. And so this is the shape of my leaf or a member. Leaves are never going to be shaped like leaves that we draw. When we were kids. They will be turned away from US. There'll be an perspectives or just don't draw them like the usual shape of the leaf as you remember from your childhood. So now we can start adding color, the colors that I will be using for this orange R. So I'm gonna do it here at the bottom. So you can see we're actually here on top. We can cut off that part. And this is my lightest light. Yeah, don't worry, it's going to look lighter or we add other colors. This is the main color of the orange. We're going to orange bits now. I'm through orange Brown's. We're basically going into our, believe it or not, cooler colors. And then the end for highlights, I will be using this grayed-out red violet mixed in with some of this blue that I used for my background. So this is my ballot that I will be using for my orange, for the leaf. I have. Though marine, warm green that is yellowish green. It's also kind of dial down. It's not very bright. And then a cool green for the shadows. And now we can start actually got the wrong green. So this is the one that I want to use, so we can use all four of these colors. So this is a dark Walgreens, kind of grayed out green. So this is my palette and we will work with that. 3. First color layer: Now I'm getting back to my orange, putting my hands, and let's start putting in those areas of light and shadow. So this is going to be a fairly simple thing to do. I'm going to start with my midtone valued that orange. It's kind of a slightly dulled orange. Luck very bright. And I'm going to put it in the areas where I see the border between shadow and light. Get into the shadow and drag it just a bit into the light. Okay. Next, I'm going in with my light. This is the yellow. I'm just gonna make sure that it's clean. This is the more warm yellow and I'm adding this warm yellow over here. So this is my lightest area. And this is going to be kind of more stylized drawing to be honest, because I just wanted to have some fun today. It's a Sunday and we can have some fun with our pastels. Formatting this yellow. Here. Next we are going into darker colors. So here I'm starting already to turn my orange away from the light. So this is the next color in the in the color swatch that we did. And this is what's going to help me bring in those darker colors and kind of make a connection between the darks and the lights. So we are going gradually. Next I have my redder orange brown or reddish brown here. And I really like to be honest how this papers kind of short shining through orange in parts. So this is my dark and even darker color. Okay, like so. And then I remember also the fact that here we have that shadow from the leaf and it's going to be quite dark. And I'm going over this shadowed area. And the shadow wraps around our orange like so. Ok, next, what we need is to this medium value to our shadow so that we can create beautiful kind of a blend with our color. Okay, now we can blend the orange slightly. So this is our first color patch that we're joining. Amending it. I will be adding more color. Don't worry. Even though I really liked how the texture connotes showing through. And I'm blending in the direction of this oranges growth. So you've seen, I'm not using bright color for my orange, but you will see how it immediately kind of interacts with the blue and creates the brighter appearance. I'm going over my four-inch again and this time I will keep my marks. This is my lightest value. I'm adding so orange into it. So remember our orange is yellow, orange, so warm color, but it's yellow, orange. Then I'm going again, next value, the value after that. And our darkest value. Actually this was our guess value. And add some of that. Okay, so I'm adding some of that light over here to create that impression, the orange groping around. And so there's this bit here. The dark shadow of, okay, now what we need to do is I'm actually going to darken it up a bit, just a bit with my bureau's very dark brown color. I'm going to ask that Brown to the next year just to darken up that shadow. To soft in its slightly. And now we're going to start out angles reflexes on our orange. So here I see that there's this reflex from the ground on the opposite side of the shadow. And also here. And over the top, I'm going in with my blue like so. And also here in just a bit of that reflex happening here. At the bottom here there's going to be the surplus reflecting into our orange. And we add the highlight right after the shadow that we have permanent relief. Like so. And now we can add the leaf and then we get to our shadow on the ground. So what I'm gonna do with the leaf is first installed value to o, My Leaf, separated from the page. Okay, next, I need to add those darks. So I'm taking the very dark color and I'm adding those darks where I see them. So slightly here. Then there's this curvature away from the light, like so. And then with a slightly lighter color, we're going to have this met here. And it kind of curves away from the light and becomes slightly darker. But at the same time, it's not as dark as in some places. Like so. And even on such a small thing as a leaf, we have our reflex. So here I'm going darker bet. And flatten it up towards this edge. Like so. And we will add a blue reflex here. Even though it's dark here. We have the same color of our ground and some of that orange. I can't work. So Aristotle, yellow in here can mix it up together. And towards the bottom more glue because it's reflecting the background. So here I need to learn about my shadow by the leaf itself. Taking the very dark brown color here. And I'm creating that shadow of the leaf foreshadow here in there's this kind of aligned shaping here, okay? And this leaf, this is going to create that and believable volume of our object. And also Turkana slightly here. Like so. I'm going to blend this dark shadow. Here we go. Okay, now let's look at our orange sovereign gonna darken up slightly here. Turns away from the light. And also some bits here. Adding and more about orange places. Like so. Then what we need to do is we need to see that there's sunlight hitting off of this area here, on this orange of ours. Actually even going to add up yellow in here. Like so. And then I will worry about the stock Jones with later and now that we're finished with our reef, fixing this dark edge here. Okay, now we can add lights onto our leaf. There was a bright spot here. And then we have this bright area over here. And right where the leaf curls. Here we have the lighter area, like so. And also or here. Next you need to do the stock. So I'm going to add this stock this little bit with my light color first. And this one I can already with the darker color because it's quite dark as its own, like of its own it has a darker color. So looking at the shape is formed. And then we have this shape over here, has these two triangles, right? Like some. So you can see already we kind of have this orange forming. It's exciting to see it. Now with the darker past cell, I'm going to create the shape of my little stock here, like so. And then we have the shadow on this side and the shadow under there. So there I'm going to dark brown. Dark getting up with the Brown. Just slightly. So also this. But here we're kinda attaches and then DEC ended up dark and then pronounce that. So also here, over here. And this side as well. Okay? And from here we have those kind of darker lines snaking out. You can create that central, but wanting to make it seem as if our orange is slightly curved inwards, like so. And to get that appearance, we need to also have some highlights. So I'm going to be using this light color here that I used for the highlight. Just a bit. Like so. Make them, we're gonna exaggerate it. So, so here we're gonna exaggerate that light on those creases. Just like we've done with down with this ya. And then here, this orange, I'm going to go in and add those light where the creases are, bringing back the grease that comes out here. So you can see already that kind of curls inwards. Ok, so now that we're done and just going to add a bit of this violent reflex here as well. 4. Adding details: And now that we're done with that, we can those lighter bits onto our stock and I'm going to use this lighter, green like so, you know, the little ending tip here. Another line. So tall and the details basically. And this lighter green, just gonna add slightly lighter green here. And next it and look this slightly darker green. Okay, and now we're gonna take a black man, so because my mass tells them to black. And so I'm gonna add darkest shadow here in my orange. Whereas yet, so we're not stock rose from like so. And I'm going to correct the shape of my leaf. So going with the black over the green is I'm gonna create a completely black color, but it's going to make several about dark green. I'm gonna fix that shape so I needed a very dark here. Here also we can slides me slightly dark enough that shadow. Okay. Like so. And also what the stock just to correct that shapes likely like so I'm cheating a bit here. Okay, so it kind of creates that Shakespeare's of belief more believable. Okay, so that's done. Fixed that shame here. And just kind of make those creases have more contrast. Going back in was this lighter color where the light hits it. Okay, now what we're lacking is the reflected light. Here. I'm going to bind with this blue again. Not the reflected light, the, sorry, the the shadow. So I'm gonna take this dark brown and the shadow is going to be the strongest right at the part where our objects, such as the ground. And then from here that's kinda gonna blend out into the Background. Using this screen also create that transition into the moon's shadow. Skin of the further away from the object it gets, the less intensive becomes and the less dark and the blurrier becomes. Well, we can do is we can add a bit of that color, orange colored into our shadow, because that's what influences our Shadow Color. And I'm blending it out horizontally because the surface that the orange stands upon is flapped horizontally. So here, transfer landscaped. Here, I'm going to note that this color slightly because it's too bright. I don't want it to be so bright. Okay, link so and now we'll find arc with my black. I'm gonna create that sharp edge where the shadow actually starts from orange to actually ground our orange onto the picture plane. Lighter already. I'm just gonna go in with my blue. So same one that I used for the background. None with enough tone it down or that take place as the shadow so dark, but at the same time it can blend into the background. Like so. And what this dark blue, I really don't like how light this area looks. To be darker. So it needs to have a reflux from the background, but it needs to be darker. So I'm using my dark and dark blue together. And then here this reflex or go away can be slightly more in times like so. And so here I'm gonna darken it up slightly. Again, going over my lighter areas with this brighter still pale, we considered this color on its own. It's not bright orange, it's quite male. So brightest yellow. Those bright highlights. And now I'm going to use solved Y. I'm just gonna put the accent where the highlight is. So that's going to create the most contrast. So this is our shadow from the leaf. And then our highlight comes from there. That's gonna create like pop. I'm still here. I don't see that as dark enough. It has to pick the card. This area here is a brown again. Okay, so this is my orange. I hope you enjoyed it. As European joined the tutorial, and we will be doing many more different tutorials here on YouTube as well. I'm just looking at where I need to darken things up a bit. So I was this part of the orange to be actually darker than the background here. Is this believed to kind of make it less dark the background, the shadow. The same time the orange will be darker. Just gonna make this shadow where the orange actually touches the table. That's going to be bright. Break is going to be dark. 5. Finishing touches: Okay, what I want to do is I'm gonna create that table surface. So let's say that we get from here. Let's try that. So what I wanna do is create the fact ground just by dragging my grade blew past towel over the background. And it's going to leave that beautiful texture. Just to name a straight line here. So you can see that the creeds and more interesting texture, they're just add something to both. Drawing. I love experimenting like this. And when you're using this sandpaper, which is considerably cheap, you are not afraid to experiment. So actually I want to try when nothing here, what if we do this area here? We drag our stele up like so kind of create more painterly appearance. Well, that goes dragging the fillers up and down. We'll see how that works. Some of those yellow over here. And some of this violet. Like so to create those kind of lost and found images and some darker color overseer. Just to create that interesting fields. Let's experiment of this darker color to write up one unit so bright. So here we have that sharp edge and drag that pastel down. Here. I'm just going about experiments. So some of this blue here, for example. Some of those dark green maybe. So we kind of take the orange out of the context. You make it the more painterly. Okay, so this is something very interesting happening here. And here I need to make this line more readable. So I'm going to have this. Okay, so I think this is quite an interesting image that we're coming up with. I think we can leave into that, just a bit of a hint of that orange here, just to to the composition slightly. Knock it down and that took this brown. Yeah, this is an interesting idea to play with these lost and found minds. And to see how our, our work actually comes out. Maybe just a bit. This blue. Blue, yes. Okay, so I think we're done here. This is the experiment. We can also note we're not done. We can also add some of those. Right? Are yellow's in the back here, just two. And then knock them back a bit with these redder oranges. That kind of create that chaotic picture, but still it's an orange. You can clearly see that this is an orange. So I'm just going to do one thing here. I really like this game of lost and found finches darken up this bit just to create that edge. So we're kind of more separating these edges from here with the orange ones leave a bright. Okay, so I like the result. I like the result quite a lot. It is very interesting thing to actually pursue a very interesting path in hostile. This is actually the first time that I'm doing something like kids lighten here. Contrast.
