About This Class

By the end of the class you would know how to do Gram-staining, along with all the other staining techniques described.

This Course contains a brief description of the main types of staining for identification of microbial organisms. It is divided into 3 videos.

1- The Basic Staining and the Negative Staining Techniques.
It begins by explaining the simple staining technique that uses one stain, Methylene blue, Gram safranin or Gram Cyrstal violet and directly stains bacteria. The negative staining technique is so called due to the fact that it stains all around the bacteria.

2- Gram-staining Technique
The Gram-staining is the "Gold-standard" staining to distinguish between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, which are the most common type of pathogenic bacteria.

3- Acid-fast staining
And finally, the Acid-fast staining is used to identify bacteria of genus Mycobacterium and Nocardia due to the fact that these bacteria hold on to the safranin stain and do not get counter-stained by methylene blue.
