1. An Introduction to the Class: Hello there. My name is David. James ought And I would like to welcome you to this skill chef class which will show you how to validate. Check. The formatting of an evil class is actually part of the writers tools of the trade Siris of classes on skilled share. The aim of weeks is to provide self published authors information on a set of tools that held in creating, publishing and promote their books. In this particular class, you will learn how to validate and check the formatting with an E pub, how to validate and check the formatting of a kindle and how to use the same to kindle application. So go ahead and enrolled in my class and I look forward to seeing you on the side. 2. An Overview of Validating and Checking the Formatting of an ePub eBook: Okay, This video is an overview the different tools available to us for checking out e pub e books. I have basically split these tools and applications into four different categories. First of all, validation tools both online and desktop versions, which will give you any indication as to whether or not your E pub contains any errors, which might prevent it from being accepted by the online distributor's keep up readers. That usual online browser. Using various browser extensions, you're able to see how your book appears from within your favorite browser. E pub readers on your computer so you can see for yourself how your E pub renders within a desktop or laptop environment. And then finally, e pub reader APS on mobile devices. Such is on an iPhone or an iPad, which is probably where your E pub is most likely going to be rate by your readers. There are a number of validation tools out there that you can use. Probably the most well known is the E Pub validator, provided by the I. D. P. F. The International Digital Publishing Forum. The E Pub validator provides validation information by using the open source toe be pub check. However, the E pub validator only provides validation information for the EAP up to format. So if you also require validation information for keep up three. For example, if you have a lot of images in your book, then you will probably need to validate with e pub. Check directly. Now keep up. Check could be downloaded and then run as a stand alone command line tool or used as a Java library. If, however, like me, you're not too tech savvy, then don't worry. You are able to run E pub check through a number of third party applications as well. P. Geena is one such software application, which is totally free, and I find it a great way to validate your E pub as I use Scriven er to compile my E pups. I have yet to have any errors in my validation. But what if you did the likes of the e pub validator on DPI? Geena, move flag up the errors, but whether you're then really understand what those errors are and how to fix them is another matter altogether. And this is where a paid service called Flight thick comes in, which actually interprets and explains the standard errors and warnings, helping you understand what to fix on how to fix it. Once you have validated your e pub book on are satisfied that your e book is error free, you will still want to see how your E book appears within an actual e book reader. You can actually do this in a number of ways, the first of which is through your Internet browser by using a browser extension. If you are a Firefox user, then you'll be glad to hear that there is a great extension for Mozilla Firefox, simply called E Pub breeder, which will show you how your E papa renders from within your browser. Meanwhile, Google Chrome users are able to use an extension called the Reedy Um Web Chrome Extension, which is based on the Redeem foundations. Open source technology for E Pub three on the open where platform. You are also able to see how your E pub e book renders using various desktop applications. One such application is iBooks for Mac, and another is Adobe Digital Editions, which is adobes free desktop E Pub Reda, And this will give you an idea on how the different systems using adobes rendering engines such as Kobo Nook and Sony will interpret your E book. However, please be aware that none of the aforementioned e book readers will render things in exactly the same way as Adobe Digital Editions does. Which is why, without doubt, the best way to test your E Pub e book is on an actual device, whether that be an e book reader itself, such as nook, kobo, Sony etcetera or an e reader at on an iris device or an android device. Now, unless you are seeing an unusually large percentage of sales from a particular E pub e book distributor, it is unlikely that you're going to go out on by each and every e book reader on the market . However, if you have an IOS device or an android device, you should at least check how your E Pub E book appears on each of the distributor's free maps. For example, the AIPO cap, the kobo at the look at etcetera, so I hope that has given you a good overview of how to go about validating and testing your E pub able in the next series of videos. I shall take you through step by step. Each of the e pub validation tools and e book reader software and applications referred to in this video. Thank you for listening. No, by 3. Validating on the ePUB Validator: Hello. And here we are on the International Digital Publishing Forum website and more specifically on their e pub validator, which is usually my first stop whenever I want to validate an e pup file. Now, your file must be less than 10 megabytes in size. And if so, you can simply click on the choose file button and then browse for your e pub file. And I want to check the time travel history, the Christmas truce of 1914 e pup file, and then you just need to click on Validate. Now, this process may take a few minutes, depending on your Internet connection, and we can see down at the bottom of the screen there that the progress is actually quite slow. So I'm going to pause the video here, and I shall resume once my e pub file has been validated. Okay, so that took just a few minutes. And here are the results of the validation. So, as you can see, there were no problems found, which means that I can now go on to the next stage in the checking and validation process, which is to see how my book renders on a number of different devices. Okay, that's all from this video. Thank you for watching. Bye bye. For now. 4. An Overview of Validating and Checking the Formatting of a Kindle eBook: Okay, This video is an overview of the different software applications available to us for checking our Kindle formatted e books and Amazon have actually put together a great suite of tools and applications for validating and checking your book before uploading it to their Kindle direct publishing Using Scrivens Compile, I have created a dot Mobi e book toe upload to KDP. But before I do that, there are a number of tools I can use to check that my book is going to render the way I intended to on a range of different Kindle devices. The first of these tools is the Kindle Preview ER, which is a graphical user interface tool that emulates how books display across the various Kindle devices and naps, as well as displaying invalidating books in the Moby and K F eight formats. Kindle pre viewer can also accept an e pub source and auto convert it for preview. Although the Kindle preview is an excellent emulator which allows you to validate your Kindle book for use in the fire HD fire hdx kindle voyage kindle dx kindle for iPhone and kindle for iPad. I still recommend that you test the dot Mobi file in as many actual devices and mobile APs as you can. Unlike with an E pup file, which you can pretty much just send to your device via email and double click. Getting a dot Mobi file onto your device or application has bean a little bit more complicated. But that's before the wonderful send to Kindle was released. Amazon Center Kindle allows you to test your e book on any Kindle device or kindle application that you own and is available for both PCs and Macs. There is also send to kindle extension for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Ascend to Kindle option in many popular android APS Ascend to Kindle email address and ascend to kindle button for websites. But it is the classic computer software that is most relevant to us. When we're testing out dot Mobi file on different Kindle devices and APS from within the Center Kindle software application on your Mac or PC, you are able to send the e book to your Amazon cloud drive as well as to the various devices and apse which you have set up within your Amazon account. This means that you contest your e book out on the Kindle app on your iPhone and your iPad or on your android smartphones and tablets. And, of course, you can check the book renders properly on your actual Kindle devices. In my opinion, if you're serious about self publishing books, then you should own at least one kindle device and try and test your book on as many different devices as possible that your friends and family my tone. Finally, once you have updated your dot Mobi file to KDP, you'll get one final opportunity to test out your book on their online emulator. Okay, I hope you have enjoyed this overview of validating and checking your Kindle E books in the next series of videos. I shall take you through step by step. Each of the Kindle emulators on applications referred to in this video. Thank you for listening and good bye for now. 5. Validating on the Kindle Previewer: Hello. Here we are within the Kindle preview. Our application on what I want to do here is show you how you can easily validate the dot Mobi file that you have compiled within Scriven er by previewing it on a number of different virtual devices that are included within the Kindle. Preview our application. As you can see, the Kindle preview, our emulates how your book will display and the different file types that are supported. In addition to the Mobi format, R E pup files html on the O. Pdf format, which is the format used by the likes of the Kindle Kids Book Creator. The Mobi file that we're going to look at now is my time immemorial history book to turn Car Moon, and it is actually one of the recently opened files. So I just need to click on the top link here toe open my book. However, before I do that, I would like to show you some of the settings down here in the bottom right hand corner. Here, you can set the default device mode so you can choose between viewing your book on an emulator for the fire HD the fire hdx the fire hdx 8.9 inch the Kindle voyage the Kindle dx , the Kindle app on an iPhone on the Kindle app on iPad. For this example, I'm going to choose the Kindle Fire HD. The next setting we can choose is the default orientation of the devices so we can select either portrait or landscape. I shall keep this is portrayed it. And finally, you can choose the default language. And of course, I shall keep this as English. Okay, so if I now open up my book, you can see an emulation of how the book will render on a Kindle Fire HD in portrait mode. The book opens on the title page of the book, but if you click on the back arrow up here like so you can also check your books cover and as you can see and the moment I need to scroll down to see the whole of the book as it is actually longer than my MacBook pro screen. But if you click on the icon up here, you are able to scale the device down. Now you can click through the pages and just make sure that you are happy with how your book renders on the Kindle Fire HD, and if you then want to check how your book looks on a different device in the fire family , you are able to click on one of the other two taps. So let's have a look of the Fire hdx, which is actually the Kindle I own. And let's see how my book renders on that. So it takes a bit of time to readjust. But then you conflict through the pages and make sure you are happy with it. And, yes, that appears to be fine as well as the navigation buttons up here. You can also click on, go to in the menu bar and then go to a particular page. For example, you could go to the beginning of the book all the cover. And if you would like to see how the book renders on a non kindle fire device, then you can simply click on devices in the menu bar and then click on the family of devices. You would like to check your book home so, for example, the Kindle voyage. Naturally, the images are no longer in color as it is a kindle voyage, but you conflict through and see how the pages render and again, that looks to be totally fine as well as devices and go to. You can also click on view in the Menu bar and have a look of the books information where you can check the title. The file format whether a cover is specified, etcetera. Also in view, you're able to see how your book renders within the Kindle reader app if you have one installed on your computer. So in my case, that is the Kindle reader for the Mac. Okay, so that was an overview of validating your book within Kindle preview. If everything looks good, the next stage is to check how your book renders on actual devices. And in order to do that, you will need to install Amazon's send to kindle app. Okay, that is all for this video on the Kindle preview our thank you for watching on, but by for now, 6. Using the Send To Kindle Application: Hello. And here we are on the sink to kindle up. You should have already compiled your e book for Kindle within Scriven er and also validated the file through the Kindle preview our And now you're ready to check your Kindle book on a number of different devices, and that is where sing to kindle comes in. You literally just need to drop your file onto the APP. But before you do so you will need to first check that all your devices are correctly set up within your Amazon account so that send to kindle concerned the files to them. And you can check this by clicking on the manage your content on devices link. You then need to click on the your devices tab like so, And then just make sure that all the devices that you own are properly connected. For example, your actual kindle devices and also your iPads and iPhones, which have the Kindle reader app on them. Once you have checked that allowed the devices are connected, you can then go back to the center, kindle app and drop your file onto the air. So I'm going to send my book. Howard Carter in the search for tooting car moon like so And as soon as you add your file to the center kindle app, you are presented with the details of your book on the different devices that you can send your book to. So I shall send the book to my Kindle fire my iPad on my third my phone. I could also save the book to the Amazon Cloud drive if I wanted, but I shall leave that take books. UnTech Once you've ticked all the devices that you want to send the book to, you can press the send button and you will then be presented with a little orange progress bar showing you that send a kindle is up loading the document to your devices.
