About This Class

In this class, we will learn the power of local adjustments inside of Lightroom. We will learn how to take our photos one step further to give them the "whoa" factor. 

Local adjustment brushes can be tricky and a bit confusing. In this course, I will take the difficulty out of the way and show you how to use them in the correct and easy way. 



1. Local Adjustments 1 Intro: what is a local adjustment? A local adjustment is simply a way where we can adjust parts of the image. When you come to your basic panel or any other kind of panel, you're doing a global adjustment. Basically what that means. Let me grab my exposure slider here. If you see I am sliding this and is adjusting the entire image 100% all of the images being adjusted, that's a global adjustment. Ah, local adjustment allows us just to control part of the image, so let's get started. 2. Local Adjustments Chapter 1: So I'm gonna close the basic panel so it doesn't get confusing. And up here we have our local adjustments here. We have a brush tomb. Very, very good. If you wanna adjust very few parts of the image here we have a radio filter which can gives us access to a little bit larger spots of the image. And here we have a graduated filter and this is great for skies or, ah, if you wanna open up more off the image, um, larger parts of the image. So we're going to start with a radio filter. All I want to do is I want to click on it and then I want to exaggerate this just so I can see what I'm doing to my image. So I bring this up to, like, maybe ah, 1 51.50 Somewhere on there, I'm going to draw it around my horizon line. Right now, I can bring this down and I can bring it to the right here. And as you can see, it's on Lee locally adjusting what's inside that that filter. So if you pressure okey. So if you're pressure okey, you can see that the the red part. The inside of this filter is being adjusted. I don't hear you have an invert mask. If you click on that now, the outside of the mask is being adjusted. Here's a feather slider. This lets you feather your image that would you get rid of. There's really hard lines, and you can always move this filter around as you see fit. Obviously, you always want a feather this filter, so they're a very smooth transition that would your viewer can never see what you did. So around the 70 72 75 is usually where I like to stick around. That usually works really well for this particular image. I'm going to, Ah, choose the inside off my filter, and here we can press the okey to get rid of that and we can see the adjustments now. I don't want to just the exposure. I think my exposure is just right. I just wanted to show you by exaggerating it. What's being adjusted? DoubleClick. The exposure here to reset it. Double click any of this words, and it will reset your adjustments. And kids you mess up, hear what I want to do is I want to just my temperature. And if I come here to the right, as you can see, it's getting, Ah, it's getting yellow, er, orange, more orange, more yellow. It's just getting a little bit brighter, right? That's exactly what I want to do. I just kind of want to exaggerate a little bit that that sunset, but doing so tastefully. I don't wanna make it too crazy. And that's a trick I'd like to use by doing the temperature. Now you would say, Why don't you do the saturation you can? But look how how different this looks. This kind of destroys the image right, and by doing my temperatures lighter, sliding it towards the yellow, it makes it a little more orange, a little more yellow in a tasteful way. Now you can always check your progress by clicking the switch on and off. We'll click it off. There's before there's after before after, As you can see, it's just a very minor, tasteful adjustment. But it makes a big difference, right? Very good. So I think that's done. So that's a radio filter you can use is many of this situation and image you can drum all over your images. You can reshape them, however you see fit. You can delete him if you Ah, if you right click, you can delete him and you can adjust the old ones by just clicking on it and then come into your sliders and fixing up. All right for this particular image. I'm only going to use this one particular slider. I want to show you all of these adjustments, so we're only going to use this one particular filter. We'll close out of that now. It's important to know that you can also mix and match sliders when you do this. So if I wanted to make it a little softer, you can bring the clarity down. If I wanted harsher, you can bring the clarity up. So all this lighters can be used in, um, in one filter. Ah, however, for this particular image, we're only going to use one, um, slider. So we'll be done without president. Now what I want to do, I want to come here to one of my adjustment brushes. Now that works the exact same way. Let me close this basic panel so you don't get confused. That works. The exact same way. Now here, I'm going to adjust the exposure and what we want to do here. Well, I just want to paint this white, um does white water a little bit, right? So I just want to make some so subtle, subtle adjustments you're saying right now, even that's not very subtle. You're right, it's not. But this way I can see what I'm doing, and I will. Once I'm done painting over these, then I can bring down the slider and adjusted perfectly to taste. Now, this is all to taste, guys. So don't be shy. If something looks good to you, go with it. All right. An experiment. Remember to experiment. It's always good to experiment. And I just want to basically at a little bit off off punch to this to this whiteness. Right? So now it's way overdone. Son. I grabbed my exposures lighter, and I just want to bring that down just a tad. Maybe like ah, maybe like a 47. That's pretty good. And now we're gonna go here towards switch to this little switch, will cook it on and off. There's off and there's own. And, as you can see, he's just you can see the white a little bit better now that's still too much. You can bring it down a little bit, and if you want to use another one old you have to do is you click done. You click on your brush tool again, and then you can paint over Ah, particular area. And that's a brand new brush has nothing to do with the old one. As you can see, the old one is right here. You can click on the old one, and that will give you control of feel one again. You can click on the new one, and that will give you control of the new one. Uh, keep in mind, you can do as many of these brushes as you want in one image. If you want to come down here and play with your clouds, you can certainly do so. And that actually looks kind of cool. I'll just bring it down. And if you go too crazy if you go overboard, all you have to do, um, remember, here's a brush, A or brush be our brush. A is the one that is click. Now we're going to come to erase and will just raise a little bit of this brush troop. Maybe I'll here will leave the highlight. Now we'll come back to the A brush and as you can see, there's before after before after pretty cool, right? All right, so let's go a little bit further and now we're going to press done and I want to come back again and I'm going to do another one of those brushes. But I want to highlight basically this green on this rocks. This green looks really cool, so we're just going to highlight it a little bit, and I think that looks really nice. Now. It's a little bit overdone, but again, we can always come down here and tone it down a tag. If you press the exposure key twice, it'll reset it. You can bring that up to taste, and I think that looks really nice. I'm going to president race key here just because I want a little bit over here. Just delete that now you can always President okey and that will highlight again what you've done, and you can even touch it up with the okey. Just light adjustments very, very slightly Justin President. Okay, again. Now we'll come here tour switch, and you can see the difference before after before. After, As you can see, minor, minor, subtle adjustments. But they make a huge difference in the image. Right? Very, very cool tools to use. Very, very powerful. We'll do one more on this image before we moved to the image. This is Cali graduated filter. Now this, you can click on it. And now it's going. You condone draw so you can draw from the top down, right? Let me delete that. You can draw from side to side, right? Let me delete that. And you can draw from the top up. Very, very powerful tool again. Guys, this is a graduated filter. Now this air commonly used for skies, that's what I mainly use them for. So here I want to make this guy maybe just a little bit more dramatic. I'll bring it down. As you can see, my exposure is way up. Maybe I'll reset the exposure. And I just want to make this guy a little bit bluer. So we'll just bring down the temperature just like that. And now I'll open up the sky just the tired. Now check it out before and after. Very subtle, almost no change, but just a little bit blower and a little bit brighter. 3. Local Adjustments Chapter 2: our next image. We have another beautiful sunrise. I shut this in Miami and a Z. You can see the images. It's almost done. Here's all my adjustments. I just brought out the colors a little bit, but it's not quite done. It still needs a little bit of that punch, right? So that's what's beautiful about this local adjustments. You can create that with a few a few adjustments and the images comes alive so well. Quick here will grab our radio filter. And I just want to draw over this lifeguard tower, right? So just draw over. It may be right about there, and I basically just want to bring up the exposure. I want to be able to see this life or tower a little bit better. And now the wider I go with my with my, um, filtered, the more the more fates into the landscape, right? So don't draw little tiny filters in one area because you'll be able to see the difference . Go big and make sure that it blends into the scene. And this will just make the image that much more more impact for more. Give it that wild factor because nobody will be able to ever know that there's a radio filter involved. So here's the exposure were about 0.80 which it looks really, really nice. Now I want to bring my highlights on a little bit here just to make this guy see how the sky. It's just very subtle. If you go, if you can't see it, bring it all the way up. Bring it all the way down and it just makes this a little bit nicer, a little more color here, more fire in the sky. And it just brings this this kind off. It's not blown out, but it's like a white cloudy kind of just tones it down a little bit. And now let me show you here before the filter and after just very subtle adjustments. But they make a huge difference, and I'm pretty happy with that. Maybe I'll bring it even to like 0.85 Just subtle, very subtle but but powerful adjustment that looks really here. Now you could say this is done and walk away and be really, really proud of it. However, there is one more thing I'd like to do, and I just want to come here to my adjustment brush and same thing. We're going to bring up the exposure and I'm gonna work on my leading lines. You see this? This lines now, this was set up absolutely on purpose. I wanted this to be my leading lines when I saw them into this live our tower. So now, instead of having them so dark, I'm just going to go over it with this local adjustment brush and I go over him. The more you go over, the brighter they get. And that looks pretty nice. Now. I did kind off a sloppy job here, so I'll come to the erase. And now I'll just lead a little bit of this spill that I have Not too much, because I still wanted to blend right. That's pretty nice. Pretty good. And I'll take your time when you're doing this. Guys, make sure you are looking at every detail of the image that will you. You can do a really good job, and that looks really nice, right? That looks pretty good. But obviously it's exaggerated. I just wanted to see what I was doing. When I come to my exposure and I bring that down and this is very subtle, very, very subtle. So 0.15 that looks pretty good. Let me click before and after for after before, after. And they might be a little too right, so you can still bring it down. Or if you wanna exaggerate, the more you can bring it the other way around. I like subtle adjustments, so I'm just gonna do like a 0.7. I think that's good enough. You can still see the tracks before, after just a very, very subtle, subtle touch. Maybe a point, if you can. If you can work on that, just put 0.10. Type it up, press enter, and there you have it. So as you can see, very subtle adjustments are very, very effective. And if you close out of that, that looks like a complete image. 4. Local Adjustments Chapter 3: All right, guys. Are next images. One of my favorites. I shot this on the beach again of the sunrise, and this just looks really, really amazing. Very powerful image. You have clouds, you have contrast. You have everything. But when you look at it, it's not quite done. Now, I did overall my basic settings I had on my lens corrections. Now to spare you the time. This is a tutorial on, um, how to use local adjustments. Hovered. This has been edited, just like the other ones. But let me just show you how we can finish this up. Right. So now do we have this? Ah, this four grams really dark. And I really wanna show it off, because I think it looks really, really cool. So I'm going to grab here a graduated filter, and my exposure will be again exaggerated a little bit, but I'm going to come from the bottom up, and I'm just going to draw it and open up this beautiful foreground off the sand. Look at that. How cool is that? That looks so good now, and I can just bring that up a little bit. And I looks amazing, right? let me show you the before after, and that looks really good. I'm really, really happy with that. You can see we just kind of had to open this up a little bit to bring the image to live. If that's too much, you can always come back. You can always click on this dot and you can bring it down the time press done. And there you have it. Now that looks really good. Let's do a couple of more adjustments. This doesn't need too much. I just want to grab one of these radio filters and I just want to drop her This feather I want accentuate the feather again. Don't be afraid to use big filters around around ah, particular item that will you have enough room to blend everything in. That's to Vegas. Bring it down a little bit. Turn it kind of that way. That looks good. Remember, all this is to taste into your eyes. I want to bring this down maybe like a 50 cause I just want this to be super super subtle and now quick before and after before, after just a subtle change. But that looks amazing, right? Very, very good, and I think that could pretty much be a done image. Now, this is too dark for you. If you want to lighten this part up, you can use a local brush just ah, adjustment brush, and you can line up the clouds. Here. You can just paint over it, and that actually looks nice. Another way to do it. Let's delete that you can actually use another graduated filter, and you can paint from the corners on this way. Click out of that and look at that. That looks pretty year. I don't think there's anything else I'd like to do to this image, and that covers adjustment brushes.
