About This Class

Notion is an incredible tool, but having some guidance in how to use it and familiarize yourself in the beginning is crucial! This beginner course is made to help people really see the different ways of using Notion and equip them to use it based on their personal needs!

I don’t believe in making obscurely long classes, and so I have created an information packed class! I hope this short class changes the way you approach your days, forever! If this is the first time you have heard of notion, definitely check it out (this link will give you a discount):

1. Welcome to Notion: Hey, how's it going? So in my Facebook group called notion for students, I've seen that there are two types of people that seem to really struggle with notion. So one is their friend recommended it to them as a great way to increase their productivity , but they're really not sure how it works. On the other is people that recently started understanding gold, the teachers. But now they over complicated many of the structures in this class. I want to really address notion at a level made specifically for beginners in order to help people really get the most out of their notion. In the simplest way possible, we'll be talking about different uses for different people. We'll be talking about different ways to make it look appealing and much, much more. I'm excited to have a joint, and I look forward to having with 2. Explore: so I know many times it can be kind of intimidating to have to start with a blank canvas. And so this is one of the student dashboards that I've created just to help any type of student that's kind of looking to use notion for multiple tools, but it provides us a chance to just explore. And so this first video is really gonna be exploring What can we really do with notion? And so, as many people know, this Ford Slash is what really unlocks how to use notion. And so text, as you know, is just kind of these regular words that were writing pages or, as we can see, appear these different links to go to a different place where you can kind of compartmentalize different information to do. List our to do list as you can kind of see what this checklist over here. Headings are different ways to hope split up information. So, like on a website, you can really use notion to make your own personal website and in a way that no one else will see it but you. You can also use it to make your own website, but that's for a different day. Um, there bulleted list. So any time you're using typical functionality, there's the bullet list. There's that numbered list. There's the toggle. A struggle list is pretty interesting just because it allows you to start to break things apart and hide different pieces of information. And so if you have all of let's say we have all of these pages right here and you know it's nice to be able to know that they're that they're there, but we don't necessarily want to always see them. We can highlight them, and here you can actually see the different boxes. Imo. You can drag it and we can put it here. And so now, whenever we hit this taco button, it all disappears. And so the point of toggles is really to help open up space, and Onley showed information that is most relevant and so toggle is pretty cool. Um, we couldn't move these out, so there's the toggle feature. Let's continue our search. So that struggle. Then there you can put quotes. You can add dividers you can at you can link to pages you can call out. Yeah, this is kind of a way to set reminders. So any time you put an at symbol, you can instantly set a reminder and so at, and then you can insert whatever information is most relevant there continuing. Then here comes the next big category, which is the database category, and this is where a lot of people start to push how they're using notion. And so notion relies on the ability to combine almost a Google spreadsheet and a ghoul document all in one and so all tables that you may create. Let's move this out of the way. So all tables that you may create are actually really magical, because it's close table weaken. Let's save My name is John and Smith and Jacob regardless. But the really cool thing is, you have a lot of functionality here in deciding what you want hears of. This is a table of friends that you like reaching out to. Maybe the date of their birthday is important. And so you put birthday here, and this is just so you never forget anyone's birthday and so say You know, let's say John's birthdays in a couple of days and weaken set a reminder on the advent of that day. And so this not only will tell you his birthday, but I will remind you that it's John's birthday. And so this is a really simple way to kind of start putting together this information, but it doesn't stop here. There you can just have regular words. You can put numbers, you can create these different categories, and so select is a way to do it. And so say, John, you learn you met him in university. So uni versus you know, uh, middle school, poor from work and things of that nature and so select is a way to create these different options. If you go to multi select, it allows you to have and include all of these different options. And so many times, things cannot only be categorized into mutually exclusive categories. So there's that person is if you're working with multiple people checklist. You are l, um it's a very easy way to just dump your girls. And then this is where things confined of get complicated. So, for example, say we were to make a column, and this is created time created by last edited time. And so say you wanted to expedite the way you made these things. And so you set up a created time. And so every time you click this button, it will update. And so I made these columns two minutes before I made this one and said It records that which is a handy dandy feature, and you can always rename any of this information. If you would like to insert columns to the left or right, you can always move that you can move these around freely. And so this is really just a way to understand and just play around with us. A very nice part of this is you can also change these features into different categories or different ways of looking at it. And so aboard this. So this board may set it up like this so it automatically has filtered this board based on these tags that we set up. And so see, for Jacob, um, the Firoz tag, we call him middle school and work. And so, as you can immediately see Jacob shows up right here and so very easy Way to go about that . But you must have quickly saw that here this opens as a page, and so any time that you have any bits of information, you could actually put him here. And so say you're a student and you want to organize your lecture notes. And so this is lecture One, um, you can have rather than birthday. This will just be date of the lecture. You can remove the reminder, of course. And all of this stuff would obviously change. So we could just delete that and maybe you want to. I studied and so did you review these notes? And so here you can actually just make it a check box. And so let's say these air from here. Let's say this is then and this is then and so we can just remove these. We'll call this lecture to lecture three. And so the really nice part of this is you just go here and you're able to instantly start taking notes. And so, you know, say the topic is on chemistry and so you're able to do this ford slash H one because you want to be heading and you're able to talk about the atom. And so you add a divider and you're instantly able to start taking notes and really accessible Additionally, this is a great place to use the select feature and create these different. So what courses it? Oh, well, if we're learning about Adam's, it's probably chemistry. But I may have a calculus course and so on, so forth. And so basically, this is a very easy way to organize this information and take advantage of us. We will dive a little deeper into this, but I wanted to at least introduce it. Other useful features on notion are the ability to So as we saw, you can make boards. You can move all of this around, but you can also make other interesting things. And so let's say we were go to this class is component. This class is Oh, you see? Okay, here is the semester that it took this class. You're able to also very easily add these different views with different filters. And so the way the filters work is you're able to come here and hit, filter and see the information. And so since this is all classes, it will show everything. But if I were to go to full 19 you don't see anything because none of the classes air there and so say calculus this semester. Oh, there we go. Um, since I instantly put it in here, it automatically added this tag because it knows it's relevant. But if we were to change the filter, too, this one, then it would disappear. So these filters air basically a way to organize the information that you're viewing. There are other very helpful things in notion as well, such as all of these different ways to embed information. And so the first level of embedding is through media. And so any time you're taking notes on a lecture and they mention a particular diagram that was, um that you can find on the Internet, you're able to very easily screenshot it. Or if you wanted to do a Web bookmark, you're able to do this. You can insert the girl, and you will be good to go is, well, very great. There's also the ability to embed videos, audio code or a file. So say you have a place where you're keeping Let's say like this. You have your resume. Well, you're able to embed your file, and just so that now you can keep track of all of this relevant information which is great . And then the next level of embedding after that is embedding other things like pdf's or the ability to embed a file from Google Driver Google Docks, which you may have used or keep tweets that you really enjoy. And so if you want to store up all of the tweets that you've enjoyed, you have the ability to do that. Let's see what else we can explore up in here. So these are all a bunch of different absence of fig Mazza type of design platform. Envision is as well so a lot of these air very kind of design oriented and more for that component. But if you're familiar with ease, and you would like to start tying all of these things together to make it and bring it to a single place, you have the ability to do that. There's also the ability to have a table of contents. You have the ability to enter math equations, um, and so much more. And so that is a quick preview of notion. And maybe now we can 3. Design: So the first part of building is being able to make your building look how you want it to look. And so it's very easy to start building out information and so say you're a student and you know you want to have your classes and, you know, here we can list the classes or even have separate pages for all of them. So let's call this chemistry so on so forth. She have your chemistry class and you're able to drag and drop all of these other classes. And so let's give it some personality so we can change this to physics. We're really in the student mode today, but that's OK. Physics, okay, and we'll just call this biology. But, you know, you have all of your different classes, and then you want to keep track of your finances, and so you haven't you have another heading for that? Didn't you call this finances? And then, you know, here's income and so maybe you have your income. Or maybe you also make this a page, and on this page you're able to organize your income until scoreless page and want to say salary. And that's where you maybe can keep track of all of the information about the different things that you're doing that you're making money from. On the other end, you may want to make a page for all of the costs. And with all of these, as you can see, there's kind of this icon here. And so if you click here, you can actually make it any emotive that you're like So we can call this science And it was called this year. And then we can have some leaves there for some physics toe for the gravity of the situation, maybe calculus. We could put some math. And no, there's a nice ruler and biology we have like there's your DNA and then salaries money, and so we wouldn't want our money and costs. Are Bink fantastic? So very easy to do this. But the reality is, you know, you start adding things and you start scrolling and you have all of these things and it's not visually appealing. And so why would you use something that doesn't really serve the purpose that you need it to? And so then the question becomes, How do I start moving stuff around? Well, one of the best things to do is just to highlight. And if you highlight, you're able to actually see all of the relevant cells and how they're set up with notion. If you use this feature, it will tell you that you can start to drag. And so if I put this year will go on top of it. If I drag it and I put it underneath ago underneath it, If I drag Ege and I put it beside it, it will push this to the side. But now everything is out of whack. And so again you do this and it starts pushing things too left to the right, up and down. And so here you want to be very cognizant of what you're dragging. And so here we have this faint line. And so if you push it up against something so I push it up against finances, it will only highlight that bit. And this will actually illustrate how far this block is. And so for classes. If I put this here, no, we have something different. And so before it was spanning the entire field. But now it is not here. We can move this up and this will also imitate that. And so the top ones are only half of the screen, while the chemistry that all of the other pages or not, And so at this point, you're able to start moving things around. And so if you put this here, we'll cover the whole page. But if I move it up a little, only be in this section. And really, a lot of this is becomes relevant. Whenever you start organizing things and it wants, you want it in a way that makes sense to you. And so if classes or the thing that you click all the time and you don't want that in a far corner, you want that to be one of the first things that you'll see. And if finances or something that you don't necessarily think about, then it not being front and center is meaningful. And so now you're able to see that. Oh, okay. There is a level of moving these things around, which is meaningful, were just great. Another way to go into the a design component is to use this turn into feature and so say you, you you have this classes header, but it's too small. So if you do turn into, you're able to go to heading and it'll turn into a three. Another fascinating thing is if you do dash, turn, go immediately, pull this up. And so if you do H one to adapt accordingly, either out is fine. And really, it's kind of what works best for you in the first place. And so this is a very simple way to just start making and moving things in a way that makes sense to you. That I do not personally use at all. But many people actually like quite a bit. Is this cover, and so, if you have cover, it will automatically populate it with something, and you can change this. And so this could be something that you upload. You can link it to the Internet, or it's actually connected to unspool ash, which is basically this gallery of different things that you can take in. So if you wanted to look at the sunset and that is something that talks to you and speaks to you, then you know you can select a very beautiful sunset. Kind of you can reposition this as up and down as you want. So say you like water. Say, like sky say like leaves, whatever. And you can kind of use this. And so this is another design component that you can always 4. Tables and Databases: So now that we've kind of gone into some of these design parts, you've had the chance to play around with this. Let's actually start building something that is going to really change how you use notion and so kind of how we talked about this earlier will kind of dabble with this again. And that is really using this data based off and using tables. And so the beauty of tables is that it really gives you the flexibility to store whatever information that you would like and then utilize it in whatever way that is relevant to you . And so one of the best ways to go about this is just to play around with it. And so, like, we kind of did. We can actually you call this lecture number, and so you're you're able to enter the number of the lecture to Maybe you can even have topic. So, you know, maybe you talked about and you talk about elections, then you talk about gold foil experiment and so on, so forth. But all of this stuff, basically is a way for you to organize. And this is where people many times will start to get carried away because they're like, Wow, I can do anything with this. And so maybe, you know, I shouldn't put a bunch of check boxes on Ah, did I, like, pay attention, pay attention during the class because, you know, sometimes I don't do that. And so maybe for this one, I didn't Did I review the notes, And so then you start adding more check boxes, and by the time you're done with all of this, this becomes a huge mess, and it's not really relevant to what you were doing. But there are ways to kind of go against things like this. And so this is really where you want to start maximizing and understanding what you really you're using. Notion Fourth, and so many people will use it for spaced repetition. And so this is whenever they are reviewing something and they want to review it on different dates. And so, you know, rather than making all complicated many times I emphasize review one great view, too, and we'll also turned this into a date. Review three. And this can also be a date. And while you're doing this, maybe what you want to do is you wanna have something that is time, Um and so you can set this up in different ways. One way is every time you review you just check the box, and so you're able to enter the date. And so I reviewed this then and I reviewed this then, which is obviously meaningful to the people that want to use it that way. Another way to do this is oh, I want to review it on this day. And so send a reminder for this day said it reminder for this day and if you know, it turns red for whenever it is actually that day, which is pretty helpful. And so now you have reminders. But now you don't actually know whether you were able to review it that day and things of that nature. And so maybe you want to have count were like, MM, times reviewed, and so this can actually just be a number. So here, so say you reviewed it two times you have that, and it's over there, which is fantastic. And so then you're able to kind of set it up in a way that is meaningful to you. Another thing that's really, really powerful with the tables is to have an ongoing task list. So say you have homework and so you won't have a table for all of the different types of assignments. Yes. And so say this is the say and tags this is we're gonna put the course. So this is our chemistry visit by only G. So on so forth, I don't know why it's so great. You can change it to any clue that you would like obviously. And so you have all of this information here and say you have weekly a sentiment, so you're able to keep track of this, which is super helpful. And so now, rather than having to go into each class and see which classes do I have homework in which ones doing not you're able to manage this. All right, here One quick tidbit that many people really struggle with is the ability to move this and so kind of how we're moving things earlier. It's actually really hard to move stuff like this because it starts getting really ugly. And so what you want to do now is be cognizant of this and start adapting fort and so maybe finances or less relevant than the assignments we have to do. And so you can actually just add this to this list? Well, space it out and we can use assignments. And this is where things get tricky because we're like, Oh, we want to move it to the side of this. But it actually does not have that feature. Luckily, if you turn this into the page, drag it and then turn it. You click on these three buttons and you turn it in line again. It turns into this spectacular thing again so we can move this. Push this up against here. We have all of our classes. We're and we can go from there. Another nice component is if you scroll around on here, you able to see this vertical line? This vertical line basically allows us to push this and so were able to start deleting columns. And this makes it easy for you to just have the task and the courts. But, you know, due dates important, dude it. And so you start putting this and maybe you only want to show the ones that will actually be are one second. So due date actually requires this to be a date. And so say more. This is due on the sixth, and so maybe we have a test coming up, and this is in physics. But this is a while from now. So this is a test is gonna be on June 19th. And so one thing that we're able to do is we're able to start filtering, and so you add a filter and add a filter four. The due date and maybe we want to say is a week. Her is all of these different words, right? So is on or before, so that makes sense is honor before a week from now. So basically, this will only show stuff that is going to be due within the next week, which is super meaningful, because now you're no longer thinking and worried about all of these, like extraneous exams that may show up in a while but are able to focus on this. So this is where databases really are powerful. Another important part about databases that I personally, really like is the gallery. And so I think the gallery is a super super powerful piece that is oftentimes not fully captured, and so I think before we kind of dive too deep into what the gallery is and all that. Maybe I can actually just show you what the gallery looks like on my personal Web site. And so I actually use a notion to build my website, and I have these different galleries for different articles I've read in the past. Little bit different books ever had. Different thoughts I have, and it's a really easy way to make it easy to click on. And so, on my website, you're able to click on this link and you're able to actually see the link. My thoughts. Ah, quick summary of it. And it's a very easy way for people to look at information and learn as much as they want from it. So there is that piece on the power of the gallery as well. 5. Build it Out: so many different features. Maybe. Let's just build this build a handful of things that will basically allows to test out what we've learned. And so, obviously, you're able to make all of these different things. If you want to toss a photo on here, you can do that. But maybe you want to have a personal journal, and so maybe you have the desire to add a personal column to this. And so what you can do is for it slash each one, and we add personal. We see that since we're still in here, it will only the line only go still here rather than all of their, which is perfectly all right. And for the personal clone, we want a daily journal. So for the Daily Journal, you want something that will basically be super easy for you to go to an ad. Information to this, I think, is where a gallery would be perfect. And so we'll add a full page gallery. And let's call this our journal. Obviously we would want to add a Nikon, and so we could just make it a book, and it automatically populates it with a couple of things which we could even do it. So whenever we hit new these air that thing show So it's the date, which is pretty good, cause we're interested in that. And the tags? Well, maybe the journal, every single night, we want to kind of talk about the thing we're grateful for. So this day, I was grateful for this thing. And so what you can do here is you can just add text. And so Oh, I was grateful for catching up with old friends. Great. Another thing you can add is, how did I feel during the day? And so maybe this is a place where you want to have kind of a multi select in, So fuelling our emotions are Mm. Let's go. It's be like something in motion might be a little too much. But I was happy. Generally. Maybe it was sad. Maybe I was tired. Maybe I was sleeping. Maybe I was excited. And so you have all of these things. And so now, every single day, you're able to kind of click through here and you have that. And so that's great. Maybe up here we want to just kind of use a one word something for the day. So maybe we want to call this hour exam grind. And so we have big exam coming up. That's kind of what the date was about. If you come here, you're able to see a couple of things. So there's a property school Property's is basically how does this look? And so card preview is this will actually show the page content. And so unless if we write stuff here, so Hi, Sally, my name is Bush. You'll be able to start seeing this. And so if this is kind of how you want to set up your journal, that's perfectly all right if you don't want to see that. But maybe you're really invested in what the cover photo looks like in order to describe this day, and so say it is about exams, and so it actually knows is too well because it probably reads this. But we can click a library photo, and now we have that. And so if we change properties to from page content page cover, we'll have images. And so it's a very easy way to start populating this in a way that is meaningful to you. The filter Obviously, if you do not want to see everything or you want to filter out the number of things that show up because if you do this every single day, it will become quite extensive. Did you do that? Obviously, you wouldn't want to sort something like this by the created dicked and probably descending order. So every time you make something new, oh, moved to the front, move to the front, hitting you move to the front. And so oh, it's hopeful. You can always highlight and delete any time you don't like something you can search, which is super helpful. So if I were to look up exam, it should. I like this. The search features on notion or stole improving. But that's all right. You can always copy the link and change these things. One other thing I would like to talk about quickly is this under this template. So these templates are a really powerful way to kind of categorize your thoughts. And so maybe every single day you want to answer some questions, and so the template for the journal would basically allow you toe organize this bottom section in a way that's meaningful to you. So let's say yeah. Each to and maybe every single day you want to talk about three things that happen And so you're able to set that up pretty easily. Maybe along with this, you want to talk about something that you learned that day. So maybe each to again what I learned and to you can do this and bullets etcetera. But now the fantastic partners we didn't make one mystic so entitled here maybe we wanted and it this so up here. If we change this, maybe you call this journal template skin test. You know we have this. So now every time I hit new rather than just having empty page there's also a journal template. So if I hit journal template Automatic could populate with this information, which is hopeful just because now all of these things that you want to do have a little more structure, a little less work for you. So you're able to set it up in a way that it works for you rather than you having to put all of this effort in and still struggle with some of the day to day 6. Til Next Time: Hey, congratulations on making it through the course. So I really hope now that you have all the skill set that you need in order to make your notion work for you, it would mean the world to me if you could please leave a small review as well as if you're interested in joining my Facebook notion community called notion for students Feel free to join. It's really a place toe. Learn from one another, share your experiences and things that are working well for you and inspire others. Thank you so much for joining, and I'll see you next time.
