1. Hello hello!: Hello guys, I'm so excited for today because in this course, you will try to make your first handmade background for food photography like this. In this course, I will explain to you step-by-step how you can DIY your own customized background for food photography. And I will explain to you it step-by-step, and I'll explain to you what ingredients we use, what kind of pain we use. So you can copy the step-by-step and create the same result as this one. Okay, in this course I will explain to you the dark mood, background like this. And then also the bright mood like this. Yeah. Okay, and then the special key of this background is it doesn't flat. And if you see the detail, you can see the texture in it. So I also want to explain to you how we apply texture. So it will be very nice if you apply this and use this kind of background for your food photoraphy. Okay, so let's move to the next step! 2. Choose the Background Material!: Okay guys, in this section I will explain to you about the kind of material we use for the background. Actually, one of the main material we use is the plywood, okay, the thickness of this plywood we use usually the minimum of thickness for this plywood for this it's five millimeters. For us, because we want to prevent it bending. If you misplace this background for the long-time, you, it will bend naturally. So I make sure that I use thicker one. So the minimum of the thickness for this background is five millimeter. And then for the size of the background is 60 cm and 90 cm. Okay, So, but if you buy the plywood in the building material store in your country may be, you will hard to find the exact same size with this one. But if you want to another alternative of the material for the background, this is the second alternative is the MDF, or medium density fiber board, okay? And then the second choice is the MDF or medium density fiber board. Or for some country you can find the higher-level of it. There is high density fiber board that have the higher quality compared to medium density fiber board. Okay? If you use this one, you can purchase the size similar like this, ready to buy and you don't have to cut anything. And then like, especially like for this one, I buy this MDF board with the exact same size like this. So I just have to like paint it right away. Okay, I don't have to cut any board for MDF Because I buy the same size like this. Okay? So there is the explanation of the kind of board we use. 3. Prepare Tools & Ingredients!: Okay guys, In this section I will explain to you abaut the tools and ingredients we use to make our own food photography background. Okay, so the first ingredient is the paint, actually, when creating the food photography background, there's many kinds of paint we can use. But in this background that we use every single day, mostly we use yeah, for the base. We use the wall paint to paint our background. And there's three kind of color we use. The first one is the white color, and then the second, third one, is the main color we use to create our gradation yeah, in our backgrounds. So we use the light gray and dark gray. Actually ,when the first time we create our background, we tend to like mixing between black and white to create the gray. But after we create more background, we found that the gray, the dark gray and light gray is not consistent enough. So in the end, we try to find the color code for the paint so you can request at the paint shop and tell them the coat color for the light gray and dark gray to get the specific result. So you can create the same kind of color that we create by now. Okay? So this is the code for the light gray and dark gray background. Okay? And then to apply this paint to our background, then we will use this roler like this to paint the base color and then to apply our dark gray and light gray. We use a sponge like this, okay. And also another thing. You also need the container like this and also spoon to mix everything. And I, I usually prepare some glass of water to mix our paint. But try not to mix too much water because we want to make sure that the paint is thick enough. But, in the next section, I will explain to you about how many waters we can put in our paint, okay. And then finally, after you paint the light gray and dark gray, you have to like... use the varnish on the surface of the paint result to make sure that color, the texture will be doff. Okay, it's not gloss because when you use the doff varnish, then it will be very perfect. If hit by lightning, then it won't be like so glossy. Okay. So you can find the varnish brand yeah. In your country. Okay. So this is some brand that are available in my country, but you can use any water-based doff varnish. Okay. Yes. And then to prepare your hands, then you also have to use gloves. Okay. So that's all the ingredients we use. And then you don't have to worry if you cannot find the specific brand. I think it can easily be found in building materials shop in your country. Okay? And then you don't have to worry if you want to try out some kind of brand, because I think the cost to making it is not so very expensive. So feel free to explore. Okay, let's meet in another section! 4. Project 1 : Paint Mixing Process: Okay guys. At the first while waiting the paint we do just now until dry. So and then we mix the paint with the water. For the darker one, we use 15 until 20% water in it and then mix them well. Okay. And then for the lighter gray or light gray one, we add 5 until 10 % of water to make it thicker than the darker one. Okay. Okay guys. So this is the sample of the thickness of our paint. So like this one. So if you already get this kind of thickness, so you can use it right away. 5. Project 1 : Paint Your Background!: Okay guys, then we start our first phase. We coat the first layer of the background with the white paint. So actually, we found that the texture of the paint is not so thick, so we don't add any water in it. So yeah, we just roll it right away. So in this section we don't mix the paint with the water, so we just paint it right away. After you paint, you have to make sure in the corner area is already covered with the paint so you can double-check. Okay guys, after we paint our first layer, then all you need to do is just wait until the paint dry. It will spend about 20 to 30 minutes or it can be faster if you put it under the sun. Okay. Okay guys, for the first section after our first layer has dried, then we add water to the sponge a little so it helps us to mix our painting process well, so and then... yep, just apply like this. Okay guys, for the next layer, we use. We combine it between the dark gray and light gray, on the same spot. So we will get the gradation between the light gray and dark gray. And then for me, I suggest you don't push the sponge on the corner because it will make unnatural lines. So yeah, just make sure that you don't touch the corner of the sponge to the background. And then guys, please make sure that you don't push the sponge very hard because we still want to make sure that there's a texture in our background because of the paint. So please gently okay, don't push too hard to the sponge. Okay guys, in the process, you don't have to rush because when painting our background usually we make sure that the lines on the sponge won't show up. So we do it slowly. For one background usually we spent about 15 and 20 minutes. Okay, guys, so one more tips because this one is the dark mood background so we make sure we don't add or we don't show too much white area. So after we paint the darker one and then we put the lighter one, then we bend the darker one again to make sure it doesn't to light, okay. If we only want to use one, then we can get the color mix. So it will mix naturally. But if you use two separate sponge, then it's harder to mix both of color. Okay, guys, we have already paint our background, and then yeah, as you can see, that the mixture of both color, we made it blend quite naturally. We don't make like the bright is too visible or the dark to visible. But both of them mix quite naturally. But you don't have to try to make it too perfect because actually what we want is natural. It's not perfect or very crafted or very, or we don't try to make it too perfect in our version or to craft that, but just blend it naturally. So after this, you just have to put this background under the sun to make sure that it dry faster. Then we will continue to the next section. 6. Project 1 : Give First Layer of Varnish to Your Background!: Okay guys, we have already make our background dry. So the next step is we add doff varnish for the finishing so the surface won't be that glossy. For now, even we have using the mate paint. But if we don't add the doff or mate varnish, then it's still looks glossy when the lighting or flash hit our background. So in this step we will add the doff or mate varnish for the finishing. Okay guys, the application is quite simple. We just brush our finishing on the top of our background. You don't have to worry because it won't change your background color. So just add it on the surface. Yeah. We don't add too much at the first. We prefer that we do it like three times. And the first time we add the varnish. So we let it dry. And then we add the second layer of varnish. And the last one, the third time, we add the last varnish. So it will be more mate and ready to be used for your food photography session. 7. Project 1 : Give Second Layer of Varnish to Your Background!: Thanks. 8. Project 1 : Give Third Layer of Varnish to Your Background!: Okay. 9. Project 1 : Dark Background Result: Okay guys, finally, we have already done for this dark background. If you see that, uh, why the background look a little pale? I mean that the we add gray area, but not too much because we want to make this background as the ground and we don't want to add the bright, too bright spot in some area. Because if there are some area that is too bright, it will make point of interest in our picture. We want to make our food shine the best instead of the background, okay? So we don't add too much white area. Okay, so yeah, this is the dark background we have already finished and then we will continue with the white mood background. 10. Project 2 : Prepare Tools & Ingredients!: Hello guys, welcome to this section. In this section, the next background we will create is the bright mood background like this. Okay, So actually the ingredients and tools we use for this kind of background is quite similar with the tools we use for the dark mood background. And the difference is for sure Is the paint color, okay? Yeah, the basic paint color is we use only two color for this time. The basic one is the white, and then we also use the dark gray one. This is the color coat yeah. For this dark gray Yes, that is the color code. And then yep. I'm so excited to show you how we create this one. So let's move to the next section! 11. Project 2 : Paint Mixing Process: Okay guys, the first step, we mix our paint with water and for the dark one, we add about 15 until 20% water with the darker paint, then mix them until its makes a fully, fully mixed. Okay. Okay. And then for the white one, we add about 5 until 10 % of water and mix them. Okay guys, this is the kind of texture or thickness for the paint that we want to apply to our background. So if you already mixed with water and then find this kind of thickness, then they are ready to be paint on your background. 12. Project 2 : Give First Layer of Paint to Your Background!: Okay. Hello. 13. Project 2 : Give Second Layer of Paint to Your Background!: Then before we start, please make sure that your sponge is not too dry. So yeah, at least it has a little water Inside. So it helps that the paint can be mixed better. Okay, guys, this is just more suggestion. We suggest that you start from the corner even is bottom left corner or bottom right corner. Instead of you start in the middle of your background because it helps your background to look more naturally when you already finished it. Okay, Then at a first, you start with the darker background first, and then on the top layer, you can make sure that the paint is thicker so it covers the dark area on the layer below. Okay. Yeah. I repeat again. When you put the white here, as you can see that we use much of the white one so it covers the darker layer below. Okay guys, we have already done for the painting process. If you see this background, mm... maybe you think that it's more like gray instead of white. But actually after the paint dried, it will become much brighter then this. So we make it not too bright because after it dried it will be brighter. Okay. But in the end, after it dried, then if you think that it has to be brighter, you don't have to worry because actually all you have to do is just add another layer. 14. Project 2: Give Third Layer of Paint to Your Background!: Okay guys, we have already let it dry, and then we still see that it become brighter but not as bright as we want. So it's very okay and then we just have more layer, white layer to make it brighter. Okay guys, we have already add the brighter layer on the top of the last background we create. So we will let it dry and then we see the result. 15. Project 2 : Give First Layer of Varnish to Your Background!: Okay guys, we have already done and make the background dried So the next step is... We want to make it more doff and also waterproof. So we add the doff varnish or mate varnish on our background. Okay. Let's do it. Okay. Okay. So we have done for the varnish, for the first layer. So we wait until 20 to 30 minutes until we add another layer of varnish with the same, also the same varnish. 16. Project 2 : Give Second Layer of Varnish to Your Background!: Sometimes hello. 17. Project 2 : Give Third Layer of Varnish to Your Background!: Hi guys. 18. Project 2 : Light Background Result: Okay guys, here's the result of the bright mood background, okay. It's very beautiful. And actually, when you have learn how to make this kind of background, especially for the bright one. If you photoshoot almost every day and you use the bright mood background almost every day. You use it several times. Actually, even if you have coated it with many coating, still the white background is sometimes if you pour some sauce and then the color will change. So if you have learned to create this one, you just have the stock of your paint and then you just spend. A couple of minutes, like 10 or 15 minutes just to touch up your background and then it's completely new again. Okay, so yeah, you can use the new background anytime. Okay. So, in the next section, I will explain to you how to make the bright mood background but with texture, okay. So see you in the next section! 19. Project 3 : Prepare Tools & Ingredients!: Okay guys, welcome to this section. And then, wow, this is very beautiful because we will create the white background like this, but the texture is very beautiful and very three-dimensional because the texture is quite random but when you shoot with this background for food photography, it will be very amazing. This is the example of the photo shoot we use with this background. Yeah. And then I will explain to you the step-by-step to create this one. But in this section I will explain to you first about the tools and ingredients we use to create this kind of background. Okay So one of the main ingredients we use is this one, okay, this is one of the main ingredients. This is white clay plaster. Okay, you can find this one in the building materials shop near your home, okay? And then we mix this one with this one. This one is wood glue, okay? So when we blend it together, it will be very strong and it will, the texture will be very nice. Okay. So, yeah, the other ingredients we also choose the white paint for the basic and we find this paint with this roll. Okay? So we also need the varnish like the one we used before and then gloves. Okay. Also. Yeah. You also need the container like this to mix everything. And then this is the paint scraper. We use to form our texture. So the final will become like this. Okay? So yeah, there is the ingredients and tools we use for this background. And then, I'll see you in the next section. 20. Project 3 : Paint Mixing Process: Okay guys, in this section, the first we add white clay plaster first, the powder we add about 3 scoop first, we don't try to make all of them at once because when it mix with all its ingredients, then it will get hard very quickly. So yeah, we make a little bit yeah, part of it first. Okay. Then after we mix it, then we mix it with water. If you ask about the comparison, usually we add about, the water about 40 % from the plaster. Okay. We add 40 % of water and then we mix them until it mix, fully mix. Yeah, I think... We want to add more because we want to make it thicker. After it's finish, I will show you how thick it should be. Okay guys, so this is the final texture that we want. So if you see how thick it is, then we think it's already great to start with. Okay guys, after that, we add wooden glue to our mixture to make it stronger. Without the wooden blue, usually the background we'll crack easily, but after we add this wooden glue, It will be harder and it will be stronger. 21. Project 3 : Paint Your Background!: Okay guys. So the next process is we apply our mixture to the background. So we apply it like this and then just add every spoon to our background. And then we mix like this. As you can see that the texture is not too soft and you can still see many lumps. It shows that the powder is not mix very well. But you don't have to worry because it's also the texture that we want. We don't want to make the mixture very soft because it's very natural for us. If you use it in food photography, so the texture is still needed. Okay. So yeah, you don't have to mix them extremely well. Because if you mix it too long, it will be harder and harder the texture. So it will be harder to apply it in our background. So yeah, you don't have to spend your time too long to mix this mixture. Okay guys, we already get it, get our background fully covert. Yeah before all of them dried. Then we can also change the texture or add more texture in our background. Yeah, actually there's no rules for this, no right or wrong area. So feel free to explore and be adventurous, I suggest that if you have more background, so we can create, I think minimum you create two background for minimum. But if you have more of its ingredients, then, you can create more than that. So you can apply more kind of texture in your background. For the thickness of our coating here is about one until two millimeters. Okay. So we don't make it too perfect, but yeah, we think that one to two millimeters is enough. Okay guys, finally we have done with the texturing of our background with the mixture we made. So the next step is we will let it dry. You can put it under the sunlight or you can put it indoors. So usually we wait about like one until two hours to get it dried. Then we move to the next step. Okay, so let's go to the next section. 22. Project 3 : Give First Layer of Varnish to Your Background!: Hey guys, we have already make our background dried So it is very beautiful. But if you use this background right away, so you will found that it still too glossy for you. So we will have to add. The last step is the varnishing, okay, so we varnish it 3 times, so let's do it. Okay guys, we have done for the first layer and then we will let it dry first, about 20 to 30 minutes. And then we will add the same varnish for the second layer. After the first layer dry. Okay, Let's wait 20 until 30 minutes. 23. Project 3 : Give Second Layer of Varnish to Your Background!: All right. 24. Project 3 : Give Third Layer of Varnish to Your Background!: Okay. 25. Project 3 : Light Textured Background Result: Okay guys, finally, we have already done with this background. And then, as you can see, the texture is very rich and very nice to use when you do the food photography. So the skills when you create this kind of background is very useful when you want to move your food photography to the next level. And then also, if you like, Photoshoot almost every day, Like, when you are using the background, almost every day, then it will change, the color will change, the texture will change, and then there is might be some areas that you have to repair. So I suggest that if you have already learned, if you have already created the background, you have to also stock the paint and then all the ingredients. So if you want to touch up your background anytime, then you can do it just like add more 15 to 20 minutes to repair your background so it become new again. Okay. 26. Closing: So I'm very excited to hear from you. So if you have already practiced to make this background from this technique we share to you with please feel free to drop a comment and then also like drop some new learnings that you have already learned from this course. Okay, I am very happy to see all of you, and then see you in the next course.
