How to Finish your Speech  //  Closing with Impact and a “Call to Action”

In the art of "Speechcraft" or "Speeching," people tend to remember the last part of a speech because, it is literally the “last thing” they hear from you, the speaker.

In this course, we will be covering the Summary/Conclusion and the Call to Action, which are the final 2 ”Elements” of a speech as outlined in previous courses. Concluding well is important to the success of any speech. All too often, an otherwise amazing speech loses its impact because of a poorly planned or ineffective closing.

1. Course Introduction: Hello. I'm Armando Corbeau, Toastmaster dungeon master. Gentlemen gamer, comfortable martial artist and induces of wrestling, Adami, Asian dramas and other geeky stuff. And I walk me to mind public speaking course, PS one or four. How to finish your speech closing with impact and a call to action and in this course will be covering the summary conclusion and the call to action. Which of the final two elements of the speech, as outlined in previous courses concluding well is important to the success of any presentation or speech All too often in otherwise amazing speech loses its impact because of a poorly plan or ineffective closing in the art of speech craft. In speech ing, people tend to remember the last part of a speech in the reason for this is because it is literally the last Dane that people hear from you, the speaker. And if you want to impress people and be remembered for the all the right reasons, I recommend that you put in the extra work, finish your speech in the most act away. The following will be covered in this course, which are the criteria for a successful conclusion. Popular closing techniques that I have personally used protect that I picked up in my experience as well as real world applications for closing because closing or concluding well is a real life skill that everyone should have. Let's get started. 2. Criteria for a Successful Conclusion: uh huh. So glad that you committed to learning. You don't now past the introduction, but right before we get into the next topic, I recommend checking out my other public speaking course, which is P. S one a one where I cover outlining your speech in order to enhance this lesson. No, if you already have the basics down and just feel that a summary is sufficient for you, then just continue on and used a provided documentation. In addition, you may notice that I tend to combine these two elements together into one, though I do specify the call to action as its own respective element or section in the worksheets provided. And that's because I only strongly emphasize having a purpose follow up, action, step or objective and every speech you give more on that later, as I was. In my opinion, every successful speech should meet the following three criteria which is abbreviated as card which are closure, action and impact Criterion. Number one is closure because every good conclusion achieves a sense of closure which transitions to a finale, and people as a species need and expect closure rather to move there. Watching it book they're reading or a conversation that they're having. The sense of closure is necessary to satisfy our curiosities if you are looking at the work shed that I provided. This part is specifically labeled as Element Number three, which is the summary slash conclusion. You will knows that it occurs after you make your final main point, and then you make a clear in all this transition into restating and or summarizing your speeches. Made points. The following are common phrases You can use the cruelly signal to your listeners that you will be ending your speed soon and leading them to closure, which are let me end by saying in summary, to summarize or in conclusion now you may notice in the previous examples that they're all rather deliberate. And this is because the purpose of using these deliberate phrases are to deliberately signal to the audience that your speech is ending and that they should start paying attention to your final words. It's the equivalent of a flashback segment in a TV show. They make it very obvious that you're looking into the past and that you should start paying attention because something important is going to happen that relates to the next scene. You may also knows that in the provided worksheets, it says to summarize your main points, which is something you should always do, because summarising the main points not only helps and clearly indicating the transition to your ultimate conclusion, but it also acts as repetition and repetition is a great speech tool to help your audience retain information criteria. Number two is action, which every good conclusion should create a desire for more. Or, as we call it, having call to action and leaving them with a desire for more should actually be your objective in every speech. Rather, it's a book you're writing a podcaster producing or his service you personally provide. You should leave them with the feelings off. How do I get more of this gorgeous beast of a man? And I'm talking about myself, by the way, And let me tell you, I'm just gonna give the audience what they want, which is more of me. And it's so unfortunate that so many speakers are just fine. What's keeping this idea of the call to action? Because they do not like the idea of so and I'm gonna tell you selling is not a bad thing. All conclusions should. It makes listeners want more. It's It's how you know that your are successful public speaker. All great speakers are, in a sense, salespeople. They know that a speech is but a small piece of a greater offering that they want to give. So make sure that you always get those who hear you the opportunity to get more criteria. Number three is impact because every good conclusion should make an impact on the audience . And by this I mean that a good ending should leave a lasting impression on the audience members. Your goal and any speech or presentation is to have listeners remember what you told them beyond that, that event and wouldn't be amazing if someone legitimately remembered something you told them years ago. I mean, that's a lot of influence, and that's the type of envelopes we want to strike for and has mentioned prior. A lot of people just tend to remember the last parts of a speech, So even if they forget the majority of your presentation, your conclusion should be memorable and strong, because unfortunately, it may be generally all they remember into helping leaving a impact. I do recommend using some closing techniques, which I will elaborate on in more detail and as one professional speaker puts it, by the name of Peter Jeff, he said. Just as the comedian should leave them laughing, the speaker should leave. I'm thinking, think this closing stuff is only good for speech ing? What? Let's dive into the real world for a moment and see where Chi as enclosure action and impact applies. And the best example I can come up with is a Marvel superhero movie. Have you ever went to a Marvel superhero movie and you talk to yourself? Man, that was great. I can't wait for a sequel. And of course you have, because we all have done that. I mean, when you watch Avengers Infinity War, you talked yourself which heroes were permanently killed by Danos because you wanted to know because half of them vanished at the end of the movie. And when I say that you want to know I had you mean that you need to know your need to know what happened to those heroes at the end of the movie creates an anxiety, and many believe that this exam ity calls by this want or need to know at the end of these movies is just some mind game that's played by Hollywood, and it probably is. But it's more than that. It's actually your normal human curiosity in the desire for what's called a saga. And seriously, guys, it's This is a reason why we love Syria's like Arrow flash my here. Academia, even Korean dramas and Spanish novellas do the same thing. We tend to binge watch these days because we want to have a constant connection to characters, and this again leads to our constant desire to know just a little bit more about what's going on. So when you when you think were this chi apply, you should look no further than the Marvel cinematic universe. 3. Closing Techniques: in this section, we will be covering several closing techniques so you can conclude your speech with impact . Please keep in mind that the objective of any presentation is to create influence and delivery message to that audience that they will remember outside of the event. And I would also like to say that as a public speaker myself, I like to provide practical examples from real world experience, and I don't like to teach completely from theory because anybody can read a book and repeat theory all day. But I know that you're here not only to learn theory, but also to learn from my practical experience. So I look to provide it to you in the war flawed way. So please consider the following four techniques in order to have a strong speech nd technique. Number one is to use a quote or quotation because when used properly, a quote or quotation can add authority to your closing, as well as muse your listeners or dramatize main points. So whatever quote you choose, make sure to keep it short and directly relate into your speech topic. So in one speech, when you're talking about the realities of war, you could use the following. Let him who desires peace. Prepare for wars and pulleys. Funny is Noticias renounces, which I'm pretty sure I butchered that name. It was in Latin. I need to use that quote because it was so frickin amazing. So I'm just gonna put the name right here in the quote. So then the point is made, But when you give a quote, make sure you got the name down because you do want to sound legitimate. But guys like me, I can use a video and put it right here. The second technique you can use is to tell a story or anecdote because telling a powerful story or anecdote can make for a very memorable closing to an awesome speech. And it could be anything it could be inspirational, funny, dramatic, mysterious. It could be anything you want to be. Just make sure you keep it short, relevant to presentation and whenever possible, personalize it because people love personalized stories. So let me give an example when talking about the benefits of a vacation, you could say I recently booked a flight to the UK and while at the airport found the strangest book it was called Where's Wally? And to My Amusement. It was a words Waldo's book except British. Now, in my example, you may have noticed that I talked about my flight to the UK, even though my topic is about the benefits of a vacation, it could be any vacation, but I just made it about my flight, which now, since I personalize my conclusion, I'm now in effect made it more relatable to the audience technique. Number three is to ask a rhetorical question. So asking the question is good for helping your audience remember your speech because you're making them Think of an answer so in your speech by asking a question or a series of questions that relate directly to your topic. So one example is when you're talking about an air fire, because I'm not sure if you understand how good it air farmers are, but there are amazing. And in a speech where I want to convince others to buy an air fryer, I would say the following You may be asking yourself how often do I fried home? And that's a valid question, but then proposed to you another ballot question, which is how much more would you fry if you had in the air flying with this example, I want you to remember something really, really important about asking. Rhetorical questions are rhetorical. Question is not meant for a definitive answer, but it's meant for is to get your audience thinking on the topic. And when your audience members start thinking on a topic, they start getting involved in your presentation, and when they're involved, they're impacted. So the idea is an involved audience. It's an impacted audience, so make sure that you asked appropriate rhetorical questions. Technique number four is to refer to the beginning of your speech, and this technique is a convenient one for those who have a little trouble with the creative muscles and just wish to sound consistent in my previous course of PS one or three . How to begin your speech. You would have learned a variety of different opening techniques and dough. It's not a requirement. Using the same technique is perfectly acceptable. Fortunately by time, your closing words, the beginning of your speech or duplicating your opener. This is great for message reinforcement, and you're probably wondering why that IHS it's because it's an age old tool called repetition. Say it with me. Repetition, repetition, repetition. Anything can be made memorable. When it said enough times, for example, when you talked about in your speech talking about challenges and opportunities at work, you could end your speech by saying I began our talk by reviewing the challenges we confront every day in our jobs. And I believe that these challenges provide us with opportunities for us to learn how to grow as individuals. So let us not be afraid of these challenges, less instead welcome them as opportunities to move forward and grow. 4. Pro-Tips & Real World Applications: very good. We're doing great. We've covered chi as well as popular closing techniques. But let's get into some pro tips as well as what to avoid. The art of public speaking is learned through a lot of trial error. Unfortunately, I have done enough of it to give you some additional pointers as well as tips to incorporate into your speech toe ended with impact, starting with tip number one, summarize your main points. Remember to always repeat the main points presented in the body of your speech right before the conclusion. This repetition reinforces your message and enhances your audience. Is learning and retention took them to Is the memorize your conclusion? Because they memorized. Ending is one that is delivered with confidence and confidence is needed to maintain credibility. If you look nervous or ill prepared, you will lose credibility and your authority with the audience. Tip number three and on time and I mean it finish within the time allotted to you. Way too many speeches are ruined because the speaker rambles on or has poor time management skills. And there's one lesson in life that I would like to import onto anyone. It is that to respect other people's time. You're much more likely they have a favorable image with your audience when you end your presentation in a timely man and tip number four refrained from adding new points. Occasionally you may forget to mention an important point in the body of your speech, and you will be tempted that added interval last minute. My advice. Do not added it. Bringing it up in the conclusion of your speech takes away from its effectiveness, and you will confuse the audience because you're presenting information that was not previously presented. Even though it may be an important point and it's probably important that you want to talk about it, you're better off finishing an incomplete speech well than trying to make sure that everything that you meant to say is, added it in many situations, the audience will never notice. You forgot an important point. You could always add new points, though another segments, such as Q and A. It's such a segments available otherwise, if it's not, just do not worry about it. Learning to conclude is a great scope for public speaking, but it's also a great skill for interpersonal communications. How often do you find yourself unable to finish a conversation, especially on the phone, where you're hoping the other person just makes it easy for you and says goodbye or see or see you later? But they don't they just keep asking questions. You're having awkward silences, and then you stay on the phone longer than what you want to be. You know, a good example is when you're trying to make a sale, it's called closing a sale for reason. And the reason that is is because the best action you can take after someone has committed to buying something is to stop selling and finished the during the transaction as soon as possible. Because if you add additional points at the end where they've already committed to buying, you're giving them new information. What you may do. It's start causing doubt in the client's mind and then give them a reason to change their opinion or their mind about the purchase. So when they say yes, stop selling and start processing the sale. Another good example is when you're talking to your friends about time travel, it's using good to end those type of endless conversations by just saying Let's all check out this website when we get home. This is a call to action and only shuts down monotonous conversations. A. Another important question that always gets asked is, What are we gonna eat tonight or what we're going to eat for dinner? And I hate that conversation because, you know, only talk for an hour before you finally decided what you want to eat. And then when you get to the restaurant, it takes you another half hour to eat. You're starving to death for no reason. So when conversations like that come up, I just say, You know what? I recall saying that I felt like in Korean barbecue this morning. So let's all go to Busy Bond tonight. This is an example of a refer to the beginning of your speech technique. It's because you've already done all the talking earlier. All you do is referred to the beginning, and then it shuts down the conversation, and then you can go eat some sweet, sweet Korean barbecue. Truth is, communications isn't art takes refinement, and it takes practice, and a lot of times we will find ourselves talking to our friends at three o'clock in the morning when the party ended at 11 p.m. So you should use all these great examples as a warning sign that you need to work on your communication skills. 5. Conclusion: Congratulations, You all You just completed PS 104 How to finish your speech Closing with impact and a call to action Boy that was probably obnoxious. Any who has that was saying? Sometimes an otherwise excellent speech loses its effectiveness because of a poor conclusion. Do not let this happen to you because you have to. You have put way too much time and effort into creating and planning your presentation. Do not risk leaving your audience with a listing favorable impression instead, attempt to make a lasting impact You Some of the techniques presented today to conclude your speech, but possibly and force forward as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
