Take it from someone who has been there over 500 times -- it's not easy. It's a complicated creative process that takes knowledge on how to name a business along with a careful and intentional approach. But don't worry -- you can do it! 

My name is Michael Luchies and I've named over 500 business. In this course, which I've been planning for over three years, I will give you the information you need while walking you through the entire business naming process. At the end of this course, you will know how to name a business, and have the right name for your business. Not only will you be pleased with it, so will your customers. It will also be available as a domain name to register for your website and free from trademark protection. 1. Introduction: the name of your business matters. Whatever you choose to name your business, that will be one of the very first pieces of information that potential customers, investors and partners will receive about your company. You want this name to create the right impression, but creating a business name isn't easy. Not only do you have to think of a name that will fit your business, you have to pick a unique name that's not protected by a trademark and the name that you can find a domain name for, because you're probably going to want a website, right. You also want a business name that appeals to your customers, which is often forgot about, but probably the most important aspect of a business name which will get into later. In this course, I will help you find the best name for your business. The approach we will take is mainly focused on online based businesses, but it will work for you even if you don't have a plan to create a website. I would take this approach because it will show you what names, air taken and protected. It will help you prevent you from a lawsuit or being forced to change your name later, on which I have had clients that have come me after they've been sued or been told that they need to get their name changed. My name is Michael Lucchese and have over 12 years of experience writing for small businesses and entrepreneurs. What I'm most known for on freelancing websites is creating business names and taglines. To date, I've created over 500 business names, and it's something I truly love to do of a bachelor of science degree in entrepreneurship. And I've worked with hundreds of start ups, a different capacities. I love small businesses and entrepreneurs, and I really look forward to working with you through this course. Together we will cover the ends and outs of great business names and then go through the nine simple steps together to name your business and website so that you can move on with your business and stop worrying about what you're going to call it. 2. Overview: So in the middle of this course, we will go through the nine steps that you need to take to find the right name for your business. However, before we can move on to those steps, we need to cover the most important aspects of business names. And this will be information that you can take with you to any future project or company, or even help others create a name for their business. It works. I've used it over a decade, and it's what I rely on to create business names for business owners just like you. So this information will be like a crash course. It will allow you to recognize good business names and bad words. It will help you choose the best option and avoid making a terrible mistake from choosing a name that has protected and getting sued to choosing a name that your customers just don't understand and therefore one to avoid. This course isn't just about talking. It isn't just about learning. It's about taking action. I want you to create the best possible name for your business, and that's what we're going to do in this course I've created to course material documents . The first is a nine step worksheet. It's over 10 pages long is going to guide you through the process based on what I do. What has worked for me naming over 500 businesses but guide you through that process of starting with just knowing the basics about your business, to creating that name to testing it toe. Finalizing your business name in the next resource is just business naming. Resource is we talk about a few different things in this course. Several helpful tools also will provide you with several links to helpful articles that were created by me as well. So you can get a different viewpoint, Aziz. Well, as you start to work on these business names. 3. What is a Business Name and its Purpose: So what is a business name now? A business name. It's simply the name of your startup business or idea. It's what you call it. Your business name represents your brand, and it is the official name that you will use for tax purposes, marketing and for anything else related to your business. Now, business things can be nearly anything from a couple of letters and numbers to almost a full sentence. Just look at a law firm. They can include letters, numbers and sometimes even special characters, accent marks or emojis so they can be short or long. But it doesn't necessarily mean that it's good or bad, and we will dive into that. But let's first talk about the purpose of your business name. So the purpose of your business name? Well, it plays a leading role in your business. It's the star. It's at the head of everything you do from your business card to your website. Your business name is always going to be there. It's going to follow you Everywhere you go, you want it to be something that works for you and something that you're comfortable with, and something that your customers can grow to love, so it also plays a big role in tax identification. Just like your name is used when you file taxes, your business name is a legal name of your business and how your business is identified other than your tax identification number. If you get one like a person, your business can earn credit and help you get loans if needed. On that is tied to the name in your business tax identification number. So let's look at some business names that I think are particularly good, useful business names. 4. Great Business Names: E Bay Dollar Shave Club 1 800 Contacts Hub Spot, Travelocity leaked in. Now all of these, I would necessarily considered we good names, but they've all worked extremely well these air business aims that you probably have heard of. So there are many great business names in all different styles. But there are several consistent aspects of great business names that I've learned over the years whenever and create a business name for a client. I was trying to make sure that a name does the following for a business and let's jump into those. So here are some of the things that makes a business name great aligns with the brand. It's brand herbal, it stands out. Among competitors, it's easy to pronounce, easy to spell, easy to understand and consumer focused. Let's go to aligns with the brand 5. Aligns with Your Brand: have you ever met someone whose name just really didn't seem to fit? This happens to businesses to, and you don't want your name to feel awkward in any way, shape or form. In other words, you want a business name to align with your brand in your mission. At the very least, it should be able to grow into being apart of your brand. This is most important when considering a name that is specific to a single benefit, like cheap airfare dot com. For example, if in your long term plans you want to grow into the best ticket broker website in the world, it might be hard for people to get past the word sheep and the thought of paying the cheapest prices not necessarily getting of the best tickets. So you want to make sure that your name fits with your future brand mission and products. You wanted to send the message that you want to send, and it shouldn't be awkward, confusing or misleading. So as I touched on, think about cheapest airplane tickets. What is the name? Tell you cheap, right? Inexpensive. That's what it speaks to. Would you trust them with your air travel. If you were a millionaire who was booking travel, for example, would you go with cheapest airplane tickets? Probably not. If you want your brand to be known for something different, make sure not to pigeonhole your brand into something that won't align with the future of your brand. 6. Brandable: you want your name to be brand herbal? What in the world does that mean? Brando will means a name that can be branded now. Some names are hard to brand around for different reasons. That includes names that are long, hard to say, hard to spell, abstract or complex. Now I do love abstract names, but we'll discuss how to go about those in the right way a little bit later. Now some names air just generally easier to brand around. Think of Dollar Shave Club, for example. It explains the value that you're providing to customers in its name itself, even the cheap airline tickets. It explains what the business does, so it's brand herbal. It could have other problems down the line if you decide to change the business. But it's very brand herbal. However, this doesn't mean you should only look at a descriptive name and we'll go through some of those examples Now. Not every name appears to be brand herbal from the start. Think of eBay or Amazon, but if they wanted to just be brand herbal right from the start, where somebody could understand what they were the first time they saw it What would it be named? Could you imagine if eBay went with auction? Your stuff dot com or Amazon went with sell textbooks on the internet dot com. Those would not have been good names, regardless of the fact that it describes what they did. When you're forming the name, you should be thinking about how your name will connect with the brand you want to build. Any name can eventually be branded, but the name can make branding harder or easier. EBay and Amazon had the money, and resource is to build their brand. They also had a superior offering to the competitors, which helped them stand out. Now my recommendation is to think about your brand when naming your business and have some ideas for how you will brand your business around it. So when you have a few business names that you are deciding between, think of your tagline, your mission statement and how you will describe your business along with the name to potential customers, this will help you build a brand instead of picking a name that's gonna be hard to use. So you want to be really careful not to oversimplify or overcomplicate and think about your tagline, mission statement and marketing efforts before you choose that final name 7. Stands Out Among Competitors: you want a name that stands out among competitors. This is often lost in the shuffle. When people are naming their business, they don't think about their competitors. After all, what did they have to do with my business? Well, a lot. You want to know how your name will compare to competitors? Will it stand out when put next to your competitors names? What do you do better than your competitors? Consider using that for inspiration when choosing the name. For example, if everyone is was complaining about expensive airline tickets than cheap airline tickets that come has a media in with customers, it says immediately how it stands out from competitors. So you just want to think of your competitors names, what you want to accomplish and how your business name can stand out from theirs. As an example, let's look at creating a funeral home. Let's say that, well, we are building a new funeral home in your hometown. You want to know what other funeral homes are known for. Are they expensive? Are they cold and not caring to families, depending on your competitors names and what they're known for? This is somewhere where you can really stand out. Maybe if they have negative reviews, you could make sure that your brand is nice, friendly and compassionate. These are all things that you should really consider, because when somebody searches for funeral homes on Google, they'll likely see a list of names. You want to get across the right message with your Google listing, and a significant part of that message will come directly from the name you choose for your business. 8. Easy to Pronounce: easy to pronounce L U C J s. That's my last name. How would you pronounce it? Now it's pronounced loo keys, but hardly anyone gets it right On the first try, I get Lucky's blue Cheese. And because people seem to picture an imaginary end in my name, I get lunches. This is one of the reasons that I will never be using my last name as a business name. Take Rakuten, for example. It was a Japanese company that came or to the US No one could pronounce their name. They invested millions, millions and millions trying to explain to consumers how to say their name through a Super Bowl commercial. They had other ad campaigns as well. But guess what? There's still millions who haven't seen the commercial, and they have no idea how to pronounce it. When people can't pronounce their your name, what do you think they do? They avoid it even with my name. Hey, Mike LR there is I don't remember his name. They avoid the name. It makes them uncomfortable and they don't want to feel silly saying it wrong. So believe it or not, but people could actually avoid your business and website simply because they don't know how to pronounce your name. So you gotta try really hard to make it easy to pronounce. 9. Easy to Spell: easy to spell. Can people spell your business name after hearing it pronounced? Now, if not, how do you expect them to find your website? You won't always have a business card on you. You want somebody to hear your business thing and know how to pronounce it and how to spell the website. So one way to test this is to sound out your name to someone, whether on a phone call, um, or video co. Have them write it down and show you the spelling. If more people than not are getting it wrong, you should consider an alternate spelling or an alternate name. 10. Easy to Understand: time is our most valuable asset. You need to think about this when targeting your customers. They want something fast, efficient, and they don't want to have to spend too much time doing research or scrolling through Google listings to know if something's going to be the right fit. This is where descriptive names really have an advantage. Home Depot Discount Liquors, Footlocker They tell you what it is right off the bat. Now you don't need a descriptive name, but if you don't have one, your business name will not likely immediately tell people what your business is or does. Now your name doesn't have to be descriptive, but it does have to make sense, some sort of sense. Now My business name is Tripp. Trap is short for entrepreneur or entrepreneurship, and Rep is short for represent or representative. Basically, Trump Rough means entrepreneur representative, and that's what I do. I represent. I help entrepreneurs with their content. Now it's creative while having meaning, but it's still not the easiest to understand. But I want a peak in trust on with that trap in. There usually does pique some interest, and that's what your should do. Us well you wanted to get people interested in knowing mawr. You want them to remember it on you want it not to confuse people. Now, a test I would recommend to perform here to see if your business is easy to understand is to explain your business name wants to someone in your network, then asking them a few days later if they remember what the name stands for. If they remember that, it's most likely that others will remember it, too. If they forgot, either they weren't listening to you or your business thing might be hard to understand, but I would definitely test it. And you also want to know what people think of when they hear your name. You might be surprised with Tremper up, I didn't really do that. And some people think of different things. They see it as tree prep with an extra without one less e in there. They don't really understand the formation of it, which will discuss ah little bit later. But you really want to know what people think of when they hear your name as well, and you want them to be. We understand it and remember it 11. Consumer Focused: does your name speak to you or your customers? Most business owners make this mistake. They make the name about them while it is about your business. What is your business about your customers You're selling to customers? So just think of Mike's amazing writing service. Sure, I do say that the service customers will receive his amazing, but the first word is paying homage to me. Mike. Does anyone care about Mike? No. They care about themselves and the problems that they need solved now. Example. Here is Dollar Shave Club. It explains that it's cheap and a shave club. If it was Jim Shave Club, people think, Well, who's gym? And unless Jim is really famous and popular, nobody is going to sign up. But Dollar Shave Club Club people understand that it's inexpensive and it's a membership. It's a club. It's something ongoing. Now. There are some exceptions to my statement that your name should be consumer focused. Here are a few exceptions, one that I hinted on your famous. If you have extremely famous name and billions of people love you, then you might want to use your name. But even some of those instances we see people go with a more consumer focused name and not focus it on themselves. Another exception. You have a tremendous online following where people are Onley buying because you're involved. That's another reason you might want to incorporate your name or something Maura about you than just thinking about your customers if the business is built on your back story. If you have incredible tale to tell, you survive something incredible and you're an inspirational figure. Even if people really don't know you, then it might be appropriate to build the brand around yourself. On another exception is a well established family name you think of. Some of the biggest companies must be hungry. I'm thinking of food products like Kellogg or Tyson's Chicken or I know you name it. There's a lot and food swan that has to do with someone's last name. So if it's already well established, it's been around for decades. Then you might want to keep it a swell. But just remember, it's Mawr important that your customers like your business name, then you like it. You do want to be comfortable with it. You want to be proud of it, but it matters more what your customers think. If they don't like it, if they hate it, If they don't understand, it doesn't really matter how much you like it, does it? 12. Additional Naming Considerations: we're not quite done with covering the things that you need to know before going in to name your own business. We have five additional naming considerations, so your business name should resonate with your target market. Be available. Translate well, toe a domain name. We need to consider search engine optimization and also so take a look at names, spacing, presentation and logo. Hot Topic wasn't a clothing brand for 80 year old retirees, and hot now wasn't a fine Stein ING establishment made for yuppies. Business names should resonate with their target markets, but first you have to understand who your target market is. Do you now? Who is your target market? Far too often, I hear business owners say that their product or service is for everyone. Successful businesses from Amazon to Apple have a core target market. That means a specific person that they are trying to sell to, and by default, they're able to find thousands or even millions, just like the person they're targeting with their name tag line Marketing and Mawr. Now Stephen King, one of the most successful authors of our time, writes books specifically for his wife. He writes him for one person. He knows that if she loves them, so will his fans. Now, how does the business decide on their target market? Target markets also refer to as a buyer persona. A lot of times, it comes down to what just makes sense for the type of business you wanna build and what your product and services are. You should have your target market in mind when you're creating the business. Name, the products or services, all the marketing materials it should apply specifically to them. Now businesses create the target market by identifying demographics and characteristics of the people that they want to market to now. An example. This would be, let's say, for a small investment firm, their target market would be something around this Steve Miller. He's a 37 year old software engineer living in the Midwest. He earns around $100,000 a year. He's married with two Children and just starting to think about saving for his Children's college. And he's also looking to purchase a bigger house Now. There's a lot of parts of that, but when you specifically target to Steve here, you're going to hit you, Mary Chuck. Other people that fall within this. But if you're specifically speaking to Steve, you're going to get his attention on. It's better to get someone's attention than no one's attention, which is exactly what happens if you tried a market toe everyone. So I think you should pause here, take out a document or a piece of paper, jot down a few sentences of the specific person that you want a market to. This will come in really handy when you start to come up with the name ideas for your business name to resonate with your target market, you should know exactly what problem you're solving for your target market now. It might not really feel like your business is solving a problem, but I promise you every successful business solve some sort of problem. Let's look at McDonald's. They are just solving the problem of hunger. They aren't solving the problem of hunger, but they are solving for these following problems. It needs to taste. Great people want quality. I don't have a lot of time to eat convenience. We don't have a lot of money to spend savings value. We are very hungry quantity, mainly quantity for the price, and the whole family needs to be happy eating here, being family friendly now, these are specific problems that people have these air statements that people might make these air things that McDonald's and other companies try to cater towards. So think about what problem you're businesses solving because that's going to really come into play when you start marketing your business. But it also is important when considering your name, especially if you go in the descriptive direction. So know what problem you're solving. Dollar Shave Club, for example. They knew exactly what problem they were solving and approach this in a very head first manner. And that's where they went with the business name to solve that problem. Dollar Shave Club. It's cheap, and it comes frequently. You don't have to go out by more blades. They'll ship him to your house. Now, what does your target market want from you? Most first time business owners think they need to do everything for their customers in order for them to buy in. They try to be the cheapest, best and quickest, which simply is impossible. You probably surprised what percentage of clients that I work with. I say this. I asked for the target market and they say everyone, it really can't be. And part of that is knowing what your customer wants from you. No one wants caviar from Burger King, and no one's gonna order a combination platter at a five star restaurant. Customers have specific needs, wants and expectations. Know what those are? And cater your branding and business name to it. So think about it. What is your customer want? What do they need? And what did they expect from you? I was once told something by fellow business owner that really stuck with me. I was told that when creating a product or service mainly applies towards services, that you can pick two of the following, but never all three because it's impossible. You can pick quality time or price. Now why can't you pick all three? Because it is impossible. So thank you. Let's run through a couple of these scenarios really quickly if you pick quality and time, so you want to provide something of the highest quality, and time means quick. If you want to provide it the best quality and quick the price is going to be higher it's not gonna be the cheapest. Nor should it. It would be impossible unless you completely reinvent the wheel if you pick price and time . So it's quick and it's cheap. It's not gonna be very high quality, is it? So think about this. What to would you pick for years on? And you really should just focus on picking to hear, because you can't pick all three. It is impossible availability. Is your name available? Hey, guess what, guys? I'm creating a kid's based animation and entertainment company. You know what? I'm gonna call it? Disney. Yeah, I don't think so. Businesses have the responsibility of protecting their name and a business interest in doing so. And as someone going to name your business, you've got to make sure that name is available and not protected. One way you can make sure your name is available is by conducting a trademark search for trademark searches. I use trademark AEA, which is trade in the M a r k i a dot com. It's free to use. There are millions of trademarks. What's really interesting about this eyes? It shows dead marks, so trademarks that people filed in the past so they might be valuable words, but it's no longer protecting the name. It shows live marks. So live trademarks that are protecting this name and you can't use it and then famous marks , which you really need to look out for. I wouldn't touch anything that's alive, mark, either with the famous marks of the ones that have been protected and court in our big brand names that are, you can darn well bet that they're gonna come after you if you use their whole name or possibly even part of their name and disclaimer here. I'm not a trademark attorney. I have a lot of experience with names and with trademarks when it comes to names, but not the legal side of it. If you have any questions about your business, seems specifically when it comes to trademarks like if there's any question as to if it's protected or not, see a trademark attorney. You want to make sure you're protected, however, it's something abstract. If there's absolutely nothing taken when it comes to the domain name and the trademark, then you're likely in the clear. Now let's look at I searched Disney just to see what would come up under trademark AEA in his trademark for almost anything you could possibly imagine, from movies to wedding dresses and wedding counts, uh, to fruits, which I'm not really sure why Disney has trademarked raw fruits, but they have. So when you're searching for trademarks, a really important aspect of this is that there's a trademark within your industry. So if somebody has your business name trademarked for board games and you're creating an automobile, you might still be able to get the trademark for that specific industry. There are some limits of that, but if you do want to follow trademark on that, that's what I would speak to a trademark attorney. When you're searching for trademarks, you want to search the entire business name and individual words the keywords. For example, just because Disney Productions by Michael might not show up as a specific trademark, Disney is trademarked, and this name would likely be contested very quickly by Disney. So you want to test the whole name and then the individual aspects of it. A. One thing that's really important to know is you want to be cautious of names that sound alike. So if I tried to get a trademark on Disney de eyes Easy. Any why it still would be covered under protection because it has the same exact sound. I mean, you could try to fight it in court, but how much is that going to cost you? Is that really worth it? So you want to be really careful of names that sound like yours as well, And that definitely comes into play when you're looking at abstract and unique creations. So if you're concerned at all with a business name, consult with a trademark attorney and you also want to choose a name that you can protect. If you want to grow big Brand, you want to make sure some other company can't trademark your name and then sue you for using it. You want something that you can protect. Availability definitely comes into play when we're talking about websites and domain names . Now, my preferred website to research domain names is go daddy dot com. There are domain registration website where you can try to find a domain and then registered. So let's take a quick look at an example of registering a domain name. So if I type in my name, and I own this domain, So obviously it's not available, but michael lucchese dot com This is what happens. It will show that the name is taken. They also offer some service where you can try to get a broker to negotiate. Ah, lot of times when you search a name, it might be taken. But it's for sale. And right here in the middle, right under where you see Michael Lucchese, that calm is taken. It will show you how much it's going for. It might be an auction, or maybe a strict price anywhere from $50 a $10,000 depending on what the name is. And this is mainly due to squatters, whether individuals or companies. I even did this a little bit myself. People bought domain names that they're not going to use and then try to sell them to other people who would use them on go daddy dot com and other website domain registration websites. They might give you suggestions if the name is taken. So, for example, michael Lucas dot com wasn't available. But look, Michael looky is or michael lucchese dot store Michael Lucchese that online. Sometimes you get pages off these, and this can really help when you're looking for an alternate domain name. Ah, lot of people use alternate Don't name it domain names, whether it's dot or GTA dot co. There's a lot of creative ones out there now. A lot of die owes that are being used as well, especially for technology. So don't get too upset. If you have a name that's available for trademark, it's not protected. But dot com isn't available. Maybe someone took it and isn't even using it. You can find different extension dot co dot io or something else and still be able to use that name. What kind of name course would this be if we didn't talk about social media availability? I wouldn't harp too much on this. Just because there are so many different ways you can come up with social media handles, but you should at least take a look at your business name. And if it's available on the different social media platforms on the site, I used for that when searching for social media availability for clients, eyes named Checker and look at the end spelling here at c h E C K R I think it's all right , right? C H E c k are There's not the extra either, but it's a great free site you can put in. Any business name will show you what social media platforms that name is available on. Another important consideration is if your business name trains lates well to a domain name , whether it's dot com or dot co. Or something else. Now there are names that don't translate well to a domain names. Some of those are long business names. Think of like a law firm, and of course, you can come up with a shorter name. But then your business name doesn't match your domain name, which can cause some confusion, overly descriptive names and creative names, whether it's hard to spell or they have special characters that can call some issues when looking to turn a business name into a domain name for your website, do you want your website found on search engines? If the answer is yes, and it should be in search engine optimization should be a consideration when you're looking for a domain name. Now, in case you're not familiar with ASIO, that search engine optimization and it's the process of maximizing the number of visitors to a particular website by ensuring that the site appears high on the list of results returned by a search engine. In other words, the better your s e o the more visitors through search that your website will have now many things play into a Websites s CEO is not just based on your name. However, you should consider S CEO when choosing your name. Let's look at long business names force memorable and short names. Long names contained more words and are generally better for S e. O. However, there is a trade off. When you have a longer name, it's harder to remember and find a unique, unique name versus stuffing keywords in your business name. Having a longer business name means that you can include an important key order to, but there are benefits of having a unique name. For example, if you have a unique name, you're almost guaranteed to be the first search result in Google when someone types it. So if people are searching for you, it's gonna be really easy to find you. If you have a unique name, if you're using other keywords competitors or other results may come up first, even some when someone is looking for you, which could prove to be a challenge. Keywords do, however, help you appear in other types of searches. We're unique Name might not. There are just a few other things to consider when trying to find the best perfect business . Name names. Spacing is one of them. How do you space out your name? Do you shove it together like some start ups? Do I do for Trip Rip? It can be kind of confusing. Just make sure to be consistent If you do decide to cram two words together. One of the benefits is that it already looks ready as a domain name translates really well to a dot com. If you shove it together, they're going to know that that's what they need to type in a in a Web browser presentation . How does your name look? How will you use it in marketing materials, business cards, other places? That's just something quickly to consider and also the logo How you represent the name with your logo before making your final decision, you should have some idea on how you want your name represented in a logo. What will you use, where you use special icons or design? Make sure that name lends itself to a logo, which is a big part of your brand and brand name. When people see it, you wanted to remember it in the name plays in it goes hand and hand with the logo. 13. What Makes A Business Name Suck: So what makes a business name? Sock? We talked about what good names have in common. What have bad names have in common Now most business names you come up with, they can work for your business. It's not gonna bankrupt your business unless you pick one that's trademarked. If you go with Disney. Yeah, it's probably it's time to work for your business. Um, so names that suck might be ineffective because they are confusing. Hard to remember too long, ill fitting, not available or protected. So I think these you should definitely run your business names through these, uh, through this criteria here. Make sure it's not confusing. Make sure it's reasonably easy to remember. It's not too long. It's not ill fitting. It doesn't feel awkward as part of your business and make sure it is available, and it's not protected by trademark 14. The Role of Marketing on Your Business Name: We also want to quickly touch on the role at marketing place on your business name. As I mentioned, bad names can still work with the right marketing, but they can limit your business. No business name can fully market itself on the name alone. You will need to spend money and marketing or time on marketing and businesses that I've run in the past. I've relied a lot on free marketing, blogging content, search engine optimization. Just know that your job is not done after creating the perfect business name. It's a great start, and that's what we're doing here. We're creating that start, but just know that the best business name isn't going to make your business succeed. The worst business name the worst businessman might make your business fail, but a bad business name isn't gonna crush your idea. Our concept, either. So have some grace on yourself. Realize that your processes business owners just getting started. But don't worry. We're going to find the perfect business thing for you together through this course. So let's keep going 15. 9 Steps to Name Your Business Overview: All right, We are here. You did it. You got through. All that information is very important. Information that you needed to know it ordered to get to this point in order to name your business. But we're ready to get our hands dirty, and we're going to do it. We're gonna find the perfect name for your business. Stick with me. Here. We have nine steps to name your business and Web site. So first going to choose the type of name second we're going to do competitors search. Because, as we discussed, knowing your competitors names and positioning your name in an attractive way when compared to competitors is a very important step. Number three. We're gonna come up with a keyword list and this is going to help you create your business name. Options number four, name creation. That's when we go through and we start creating actual options. After that, we go into a domain search. We check for domain availability, make sure it's available for a domain. Then we do the trademark search. We make sure the name isn't protected. Number seven. We test and evaluate those name options that we have at that point we then trim the list and then we re test and finalize. And at the end of these nine steps, you will have the best possible name for your business. 16. 8 Types of Business Names: There are eight main categories off business names, although you can come up with a name organically without first coming up with the type of name that you want to go after, there is some benefit to narrowing down the types of names that you think are best for your business, the ones that you're most comfortable with and, most importantly, the type or types of names that your target market will most resonate with. So let's go through those eight types. We have word and some examples. Amazon Yelp Shell Apple Target Altered words. Zune Cod father told me That's when I had come up with about a decade ago. Phrase stumble upon fanduel hot topic. These air really popular. Especially now. It's a really good way, if kind of blending, descriptive and something kind of start up ish and and really modern. Mash ups. Microsoft Hub Spot, Salesforce Mail Chimp Descriptive Dollar Shave Club, Supercuts, Vitamin Shoppe, Parties City We mentioned discount liquors, abstract creations, thes air, all companies that I've worked with and respect. Ma Vidia, Max Slider Law, Randa name inspired Ford, Meyer, Walmart, Frank's family restaurant, Abba Gramick and then location based, countless wood floors shout out to my brother's business, Cleveland Browns, etcetera. So let's take a deeper dive into each of these types of business names. One word. Business names, obviously a word business name means using an existing word to represent your company, and we provided some examples of this like Apple Target Shell Yelp, Amazon. There are a lot of issues when it comes to choosing a single word. Probably the biggest is availability. These words are popular. They're probably not available as domain names, often not available for trademark either depends on your industry, but it can be very difficult to use a one were business name now have seen business owners pick a specific word to apply to their brand and then add several words to it. Still kind of depends on your competitors and availability of that. Also, if you're using just one word for your business name, but then the official name of your business and your domain has several other words. I can make the domain name really hard to find. It can make your website hard to find, so the considerations of having a one were don't business name are the ability to brand it especially if the word is in common use for other things. It's gonna be really hard for you to rank for that for S e o Trademark copyrights. Domain availability as imagined, very, very rare unless you're creating a unique word, which is something different, which we'll talk about later. But you're just not going to find an English word. Probably not even were in a different language. Available as a dot com domain name and word association. Good and bad. Just think of these names. Target. Obviously, it's established company. But if you did it now, you know depends what the business is going after, which sounds like it could be something associated with hunting. You know, Bull's eyes. Ah, but they've been ableto to still work with that. But just think about what the word means to different people. Could be, Ah, lot of different things, and you need to take that into consideration. Altered words. I really like some of these options. Things is definitely an avenue. I've gone down many times. Unaltered word Business name is making a slight change to an existing word or phrase. Zune Cod Father, which is a restaurant seafood restaurant. I love that name and told me, which is almost a phrase, but it's altered the me obviously, that's not things about me. That's when I came up with and when a business competition business plan competition with So some of the considerations of this name type is getting value from words while maintaining maintaining brand ability. So, for example, cod Father, it's a unique name. But what does make you think of, Oh, the Godfather? So you're like leveraging their brand godfather, whether it's Godfather's Pizza's or the movie or thinking of, you know, the Mafia or kind of high class. It comes with all these different things while still being unique. And the cod part brings in your own sense of humor on brand to it. So it's It's really powerful in that way, if you can get people to think of something that you want your brand associated with while still getting it, Ah, away from trademarks and away from being completely associated with that other word, it can be extremely powerful. I would definitely recommend probably having a lighter type of brand to go with this or being really modern. If you're trying to go for really professional feel you probably don't want to go with altered word, other considerations, the closeness to the actual word in the brand. If you're using it like Godfather, the closeness to God Father on what that means confusion. People might think you're saying something else with told me I always had to spell it. Um, everybody would guess. You know, I m. E so you had to pronounce You have to say, told me with am I at the end? So there's obviously misspellings and understand misunderstandings there on word association again, good and bad. When you're altering a word, you still have to think about the different meanings different perceptions off the actual work, or that you've changed to make your business name Phrase a phrase business name is using an existing phrase for a business name. Some examples here are stumble upon fan duel hot topic, and this is also a really popular way to come up with a business name. Unfortunately, these domain names have been poached very heavily that two words, especially if it's already an existing phrase these air probably taken. You might have to purchase one unless you're coming up with a really unique phrase or phrase that's longer than just two words. So some considerations current use of the phrase How is it being used? How two people perceive that phrase the equity of the phrase. How valuable is it within your industry doesn't make sense for your industry? Or is it just random? You know, do people associate a phrase with whatever you're doing is they're a match doesn't resonate . Domain availability hasn't mentioned. A lot of these phrases are already taken the ease of branding and recall. Are people going to remember this phrase? Ah, lot of times, if it is an existing phrase, I mean, people are going to remember it. They're usually very sticky. Ah, and that's why they're so highly desired and then trademarks and availability. Ah, lot of these phrases might be used in other industries, so you definitely want to look out for that. Mashups these air really fun. It's merging words or phrases together to make a unique word or phrase for a name, so there's a lot of different ways you can do this. It's not quite a phrase. For example, mail Chimp is a mash up. It's mashing two words together. It's not a phrase like stumble upon. Nobody says, I'm gonna mail chimp that, um but it's it's mashing those words together and these air extremely popular as you can see. YouTube Salesforce, Hub Spot, Microsoft. They all sound pretty good with just the two word mash up. So some considerations here uniqueness. How unique is it to unique? Doesn't make sense is a standout. The brand ability of that mash up. Some are are really odd, but some lend themselves to really good brands. I mean, Hub Spot is a fantastic company, but it is a difficult name to brand around just because it's not really visual. Where mail chimp is extremely visual mean, What do you think of male or envelope and a monkey? I mean, boom is right there, so I love those types of options. Hipmunk is another one. They've done a lot of all some things with their brand. Sounds familiar that could work in your favor if it is. If it is a mash up that sounds like something that's already existed or like a phrase, there's definitely something to that that helps with recalled confusion. Misspelling and misunderstandings can happen here. You wanna watch the organization off the word. Make sure you can clearly speak it on all these fall into that. But you want to be really careful if you're with certain types of words. Like if you went with chick Chump for some reason that that really doesn't make any sense. But it's that a male chimp chick, chump, those types of words could be a lot harder to recall to remember to spell correctly. You want to make sure they're clear when you Sam, especially in the accent that you might have or the people in your area have, or your your native tongue. As we take a look at descriptive names, I want to remind you to take out your worksheet. Make sure that is up and you are following through the steps. We are going through the steps. We're discussing the different types of names here to help you choose the three that you're then gonna move forward with. But make sure toe have that worksheet available. Will make sure to be going through that because at the end of this section you are gonna pick the three types of names that you then want to create for for your business. So a descriptive name is a name that describes the product, service and or benefits of a product or service in the descriptive way to have Dollar Shave Club, Supercuts, Vitamin Shoppe Party City. Also, we talked about discount liquors as well, and they're very effective names. But they can be hard to really establish as in hard to find available. They're really attractive. Another part of them that is important to consider is that they don't always have a lot of personality. Kind of depends on your industry independence on what words you are using to describe so some considerations here, like the times, descriptive names are very long. They can be if you can keep it to two words, that is ideal. But then the next consideration comes into play, which is domain availability. Is it available? A lot of those two word names are not going to be available. Uniqueness. Is it unique? If you're starting up, I don't know. A writing business in the business name is good writing. Is it really unique here? Is it going to stand out from competitors? No, not really. So you want to pick the right descriptive words? Pick power words pickin you could look up what power words are but you something that stands out. I don't think even something like Vitamin Shoppe, unless you had millions or tens of millions to establish it with branding and marketing. It's not really going to stand out unless year, the first in the area, or people are having a really hard time finding what you provide on then S E O search engine optimization, which productive earlier and ranking for keywords with high competition. If you pick words where there's a lot of competition is going to be hard for your business name to rank in search engines and search results. Abstract creations, says one of my favorite categories of business names. Abstract creation is a unique, newly created, made up word or phrase. Few companies that have worked with the have abstract names. Ma Vidia, Max Lighter, Lo Randa um, it they sound really cool, and you can create Ah, whole new word that is very brand herbal. Some of the considerations here you can expand on meaningful words or desired thoughts. Names or parts of names might have meanings in different languages that can be good or bad . One thing I do is I'll take a keyword. I'll translate it in a different language a lot of times Latin, Spanish on and then expand on a syllable in a different language to come up with the abstract words. So it still has a base of meaning, but it's been completely changed into something abstract. Some of those names can turn out really well, and you can find available options even if it is one word. It's a newly created word that nobody's thought of or at least registered as a domain name , and those are usually completely free to brand as well. So there are a lot of benefits of creating abstract name. But you also have to think of spelling and pronunciation an abstract name. Since it's not something people are familiar with, it might be really hard to spell or say so. Make sure you're testing really heavily. If you come up with the abstract name, make sure people know how to say it how to spell it. Now let's look at name inspired names. They are a business name based on the name of a founder, family or key member of the company brand. We mentioned some of these earlier. Four. Admire Abercrombie These air basically just business names that are based on your name or somebody else who's important to the business considerations. Ease of recall Is somebody gonna remember it spelling pronunciation as we've mentioned with other things, like we said with my name, it's not very easy, Teoh to say or even dispel for a lot of people. So I stay away from it when I can. Another consideration the influence of the name versus choosing a user focused name. Now, As I said before, if you choose the name, you're focusing on the name that you're using at the top of the business. You're not focusing on your customer and what they want and what they need, so it's different. Think of Costco. There's not somebody last name that is Costco, but you think of it as a cost efficient place to get bulk groceries. It's more user focus than Sam's Club. I don't think that's why Sam's Club is kind of failing. Costco succeeding. But who knows? Right? Another consideration, positive or negative appeal off the family name and potential issues. I mean, just think of celebrities. Think of famous families, things happen, and there might be a perception of someone's name. Just think of the people that maybe you've dated in your life. If you've been, you know, hurt by a Michael, then you might not really like the name Michaels. There can be some of those feelings Attash with certain names, whether their first or last names location based names. These can work extremely well if done right, and if they align well with your competitors. If you can position your business above competitors because of the name, then you might really have something. So location based name is a business name based on the location of the business. So my brothers company count is it wood floors? Cleveland Browns 1,000,000. Different examples. I'm sure you have ones in your town as well. Considerations. The appeal of the city or location. Do people like where they live? Do they like the name of the city? Um, Kalamazoo Wood floor stands out because there are a lot of other flooring companies, but when you type in Kalamazoo wood floors, Kalamazoo Wood Floor. When people search for wood floors in Kalamazoo, my brother's business name has a leg up. It's very helpful for that. It doesn't necessarily have a lot of personality in the name itself. Um, but my brother does invest in some branding and marketing. Hey, has a very unique style, so he's been able to establish the brain in other ways than just the name. Which is why you don't have to do just a descriptive name with no personality or a name with a lot of personality and no description you can work in both. Just be thinking about that. When you create the name, make sure you're doing other marketing. Mother efforts to make up for whatever your business name is lacking. I think of the competition or other people already using the city name or local cities the greater area. Would Michigan wood floors be better than Kalamazoo? Because Kalamazoo just limits it to that area. Encompasses pretty big, but my brother wanted to know expand throughout the whole country. Then council wood floors probably isn't that great of a business name. So be thinking about that to your future plans and goals, and using that location 17. Step 1 Choose Your 3 Name Types: all right. It is time to choose the three name options that you want to move forward with. Now. You can always change later, but you want to choose just three. You could just choose one if there's one you're really convinced on. But I would recommend choose three to focus on. This will help you narrow down your options as we go through these nine steps. So on your worksheet, pick the three here and let's move forward to step number two. 18. Step 2 Competitor Search: step number two competitors search. So here you're gonna identify five competitors, and you want to search for either companies that provide similar offerings. This is more for service based businesses or for solutions that help customers accomplish the same goals. You might not have a direct competitors, but there might be something else that people go to to solve their need rather than a specific product. So you want to look at that as a competitive. For example, you might not think of McDonald's and Wal Mart as competitors. But if somebody's looking for something to eat, it could be. You could go to the grocery store and pick up groceries. Or you could go to Fast Food Restaurant and with competitors, search the board specific the search, the better the results. So also, if you are. If if location matters, if you're not selling toe everyone online, make sure to work in some location based words into your searches to to find the five most relevant competitors. So for each of these, you want to find the name and domain name of the competitors, identify strengths and weaknesses off the name and identify how you want to stand out from the competitor. What sets you apart? Why is why does your business exist? What are you gonna do better than everyone else? Why should everyone come to you and not your competitors? 19. Step 3 Keyword List: step number three keyword list. So what? Words are important to your business, your goals and your customers. What do they care about? These words will likely influence your brand and your business name. And don't worry, we're gonna tie all this together. You're gonna understand soon why this matters. But right now you're gonna start working on your keyword list. You're going to just start writing words that you think should be associate ID with your business and possibly your business name. I'd like to give you a little bit of insight into my process when it comes to creating keywords when I work with clients on their business name. First I ask a set of 6 to 8 questions I provided you with a few of these problems that I want you to answer on your worksheet. These questions range anything from what industry is you? Are you in? Who is your target market? What do you want to do? Different than your competitors and even Have you created any business names in the past? And are there any words, images, thoughts that you would like considered when I'm working on the business name? Then I received feedback and ask any additional questions for clarification. I then isolate words of importance and create additional terms and synonyms based on their responses, so you'll learn some of this from the worksheet. But if somebody responded to my question, let's say they wanted to open a burger joint. And they said they wanted to create the highest quality hamburger that stands out from their competitors. So what What do I have from that? I have high quality, and I have they want to be different. They want to be unique so that I can take those words, create a bunch of different synonyms. Ah, and use a lot of those as the keywords that then I can build off of. Depending on the type of business thing that they're looking for and how that business name will interact with their competitors, names will a position them in a way that is attractive. So your and then you want to use these words to create a full list of keywords that will serve as a base to build from. This was what you're going to do in your worksheet. So at this point, you should have entered your initial keywords under the worksheet and then gone through each of the prompts gone through and answer those questions with at least a sentence or two . If you haven't done that yet, pause here. Make sure you come up with the keywords, just what comes top of mind, and then answer. Those prompts those questions and then we'll meet back here. All right, so you've created an initial list of keywords. You have also answered the questions that have asked. So now it's timeto isolate key words from your responses. Now, how do you isolate the right words? Well, obviously, you don't want to isolate common words and the right left. You want to find words that are meaningful words that you could possibly even use in your business name or you could work off of. So it's usually characteristics or benefits, things that are going to describe a business or product or service. So things like high quality best price tryto learn from your responses what some of those keywords are, and those are the words that you're gonna put in that section and take his many of those words as possible. Just take him from your writing. Put him there because then you're going to narrow down those keywords into a final list. So you're gonna take the keywords from the top and then the isolated keywords and create your your final keyword list. And it's if you only have five or six. That's fine. That is not a problem at all to work off of. If you have 50 or 60 that's probably a problem. I would narrow that down. Probably do a max of 12 16 if you have 20. Fine, but But come up with the smallest list of keywords and what you want to look for. Ones that stand out to you. Keywords that you think are really important to your customers, things that matter to them. You want to pick those out. You can have a few that I have to do with with personality or things like that, but it really comes down to things that are important to your customers and things that you're okay with and things that you want. Your brand represent those air, some of the the key words that you want to isolate and the narrow down in that final list. So then we can go ahead and start creating options for your business name 20. Step 4 Name Creation: it is time we are here. This is the fun stuff, people. We are in step number four, Name creation. I hope you're ready to finally start creating names for your business. I hope you understand that all the previous instruction, although slides all that information was really necessary to help get you to this place. We needed to learn that background information and establish a base so that then we can work off it because creating names is not very easy. You do need that information in order to create the right name for your business. And that's why we went all through that. So using the three types of names you chose in the first step and your final list of keywords which you just work done, you will now create seven options for each. So you're going to create 21 business names in total. So let's go through an example together. As I said, guys, you are not alone. This is not a quick course meant to just give you some information and let you go on your merry way toe. Guess what? You're gonna name your business. We're taking the hard way. We want this don't, right. You're taking this course, so you have to pay someone like me hundreds or thousands of dollars to create your business thing. You want to do it yourself and you want to do right? That's what we're trying to do in this course. Are you with me? All right, so we're going through a full name creation example. You're gonna see my process, see what goes on behind the scenes. So here's Here's the business ideas. Custom designed fabric masks and a social venture on this idea came to me. It was actually from my mother. She's creating fabric masks, um, and sending them to people on. She's discussed organizing as a business, so I decided, Hey, why don't you just use this this example like and said her the note, See if it has any interest to her. So the business type. So think about it. The business is they're designing custom fabric masks, and it's also also a social venture. If you're not familiar, Social venture is, ah, business. It's not a nonprofit, it's a business that makes money but also tries to do good out there in the world as well and help others so here is the description. Using different patterns and fabrics, this business creates fabric masks of different sizes and ships them to a customer's door. For every purchase, one mask is donated to someone at high risk of a respiratory disease. So let's look at competitors now. I just did a simple search here for custom designed fabric masks to see what comes up and see some of the names here. Banks of Love, 24 hour Risk brands, Underground shirt. So it looks like a lot of companies that screen printing, design anything in textiles are transitioning. You're adding to their offer masks, but not a lot that specifically speak to custom fabric masks. Now let's discuss the keyword prompts for this example, and just a note after you answer these props. If you're still struggling, if you're not getting good enough, keywords toe isolate. For the next step, I would recommend just spending 5 to 10 minutes free writing about your business just right as much as you can about it, and then go through that to see kind of what you wrote. What comes to mind? One. Just thinking about your business and using those as some of the key words as inspiration for your present state. So the promise we're gonna answer, How do you describe your business and one of three sentences to someone who's never heard of it before? What separates you business from competitors? Why will customers choose your business from other possible businesses or solutions? Have you thought of previous previous name options before, if so, named them? And what are your goals and what do you want to be known for in your industry? So let's go through those. So how would you describe your business in 123 sentences to someone who's never heard of it before? Masks are now a necessity to enjoy life. It's kind of like a marketing pitches. Well, just something I came up with quickly so mass are now a necessity to enjoy life and enjoy it safely. You being someone who wants to feel good about what you're wearing, want to stand out and look great with your mask? You also want to help others. This business creates fashionable mess that you'll love will fit your face and will be fashionable. You will also enable us to help more people when you purchase a mask because will donate one for every mask you buy. So what separates your business from competitors for this business idea? It would be custom masks. Fashionable designs donate to someone in need and customer order sizes, meaning you can order just a couple of masks. You have to order, like 500 at a time. And these are things I learned just by quickly looking at some of the other options. These are things you're gonna learn about Europe editors and see how you might stand out from them. The next question. Why will customers choose your business from other possible businesses or solutions so they want to be different and stand out these air assumptions? You have to make these assumptions that could be wrong, but it's better to base this. Your keyword creation, your business name on these assumptions, then not using any assumptions at all. They want more than just a mask. They want to be part of something while helping others. This would also come from your target market, the buyer persona. They would express themselves to be unique. They want something that is high quality without breaking the bank. So for this exercise, I'm just assuming that there hasn't been any previous name options before. If you did have other name options, that's a great way to get new keywords to use. I would definitely iterated on those a bit. Find synonyms If it all depends on why you didn't like the previous business name that you came up with or why it wasn't available. That's where you can come up with some words like the words you used if you're using a descriptive name option on build off of those, come up with some other keywords that are around those business names. But when I get business names that somebody has tried to come up with but hasn't used gives me a lot of insight to the process what they think might be right for them and their customers and the types of names that they prefer. What are your goals and what do you want to be known for in your industry? So for this fictitious business, for the goals I have be the preferred choice for customers seeking custom fabric masks help those who are at risks while selling mess. So we want to make a profit, but we want to help people to be known for quality customization options, giving to others and coming up with just a few goals. And what you're known for really helps with keywords and going through this process. You know what else that helps with content. You got copy for your website social media content that you can use for marketing materials . I mean a lot of what you're writing here. You definitely want to keep it. Hold on to your worksheet because you can use a lot of this. It's not useless after you come with your business name. You can draw off of this when you're writing blawg, post taglines, mission statements and whatever else you need for your business. Also, I do have a course on the types of content you need as a startup, so make sure to check that out once you do start to launch your business so fast for just a little bit. And here's my final keyword list. These air the main keywords that I've narrowed everything down to masks, customer customized fabric quality, help giving affordable, unique fashion, donate summer descriptive like masks and fabric, and others arm or benefit focused, like giving quality unique So once you have all these, then you can move on and start creating the names for your business. Now that you have your keywords, you want to create your business names. But how do you do that? Because it's not as simple as just combining a couple key words together, although it could be, especially if you're doing a descriptive name. So you want to use the keywords. Help influence your business name creations based on the types of names you prefer, the three that you've chosen. You really want to look at synonyms for these terms. Sometimes a keyword might not be perfect to put in a business name, but a sin and then might be. Also one of the words you picked might be too common, and you want something that kind of stands out. So something I do is go into Google, type the word and then sending them so you with the source that comes up on. Then you could look through several pages of synonyms for most common words, to find other ones to add to your keyword list or to use in that business name. So don't be afraid to go off the list if additional terms and phrases come to you, because let's face it, part of this is a creative process. We're combining a process like your keywords with creativity, because a lot of business names don't just use the key words that they come up with. We talked about male chimp earlier. I'm sure that monkey probably wasn't on their list of keywords but male waas. So if you want to go for amore fun name with a lot of personality, you can add an animal or a color. I've seen that use a lot, too, and add it with a descriptive word to then create your business name. So make sure to keep this process open to creativity. You want a pair your keyword with something else. If you want to add some personality, too, it's just another option. Something else you can dio. So make sure to think out of the box about each as well. Look at language, which we talked about. You can use Spanish, Latin, Greek whatever to transform some of these words, especially if you're looking at abstract creation. You can take just a syllable. Also for mashups, you can take just parts of names, mash them together, see if it makes sense and if it's something you consider to use for your business. But just make sure that toe don't limit your creativity during this process. Let that flow as well, along with the process of the keywords that you created. So what we've done here is I've created several options. I took problem about an hour or so to create a bunch of different business options for the business idea that we talked about this fabric mask business. And I've created a couple for each type of name to possibly help you while you're creating your names. So here are a couple different options for each. So worried if we're looking at a one word business name, I have massacre or breathe for altered words, I have faster or mask aid for phrase. I have wear and save fashionable fabric. Fashionable mask, custom of fabric mask, mask, helper, fash mask, mess giver, which is masked. Let's giver. Probably a little hard to understand. Mass sneak for descriptive, unique masks, custom fabric masks, customized masks, abstract creation. Fash Icka mask, Orta, Give Aurea name inspired Lucchese mess, which you know where you use that just money last name Lucchese or Michael's Masks and location based United States fabric masks could work, but a Long and Kalamazoo masks those air name options for each type of business name. 21. Step 5 Domain Search: Let's move on to step number five where you're going to conduct your name search. Make sure you're following along in the worksheet. You're gonna want to search each of your name creations on a domain registration website. I choose. Go dead in that comets really easy, but all you want to do is put in each name and search for the dot com domain name. If it's not available, you might want to see what it's being used for. If it's a similar type of business, you might want to scrap it altogether. If it's not being used, then you might want to look at a domain extension like Dot Co or die. Oh, but make sure to search each of those options through a domain registration website. So domain search alternatives. What do you do if a domain isn't available so you can settle for a non dot com extension as we explained dot io dot co dot company or something crazy? And there's a lot of them. You can alter the name so this could be adding a little personality to it could be adding an extra word. It could be just changing it a little bit changing the spelling or just finding a creative way to make it a little bit different. Now you're still gonna indeed clear through trademarks, which we're gonna talk about later. But for the domain is specifically, you might want to just change it a little bit. So it's available as a dot com domain name. Or you could just throw the name option out if you If you require a dot com domain name and a lot of my clients do, then I have to just completely scrap an idea if it's not available as a dot com domain name . 22. Step 6 Trademark Search: So now it's time for Step six. It's the trademark search. So just because of nail a name is available as a domain, it does not mean that it's free from trademark. Unfortunately, I've learned I've been really excited sometimes to find it as a dot com available domain name. Then, all of sudden, I see that there's a trademark Protecting it doesn't happen a tongue cause. Usually companies that protect their names with the trademark definitely have any variation of their company name trademarked. But sometimes you see it. So I use trade market dot com. There are other trademark search engines to make sure to check your resource, the resource worksheet for this course. So you want to search for the full name and each part of the name. You want to make sure there are no conflicts within your industry for that tremor. One example Quickly bring up is entrepreneur. There's a reason I don't use entrepreneur Rep. Used trip up instead is because Entrepreneur magazine actually has entrepreneur trademarked , and they went after I don't know if they still do this, so excuse me, but back a decade ago, they're going after any business that was using entrepreneur in the name. So a lot of small business owners, public speakers that were using entrepreneur blank whatever else they were adding. Teoh, you know, Entrepreneur, innovator, entrepreneur whatever dot com they were going through and basically saying, you know, give me your website or face legal consequences. So you wanna be careful. You want to make sure that word one of the core words that you're using isn't trademarked like that. And also so if you have any doubts, consult with a trademark lawyer. I'm not a lawyer. Give you advice based on my experience, but you have to do what's right for you. You want to make sure you're not gonna face any legal infractions for your business name. So it's always best to speak with a professional, speak with a lawyer. If you have any doubts, any questions about your business name 23. Step 7 Test and Evaluate: step number seven Test and evaluate. This information is also on your worksheet. So for your test, I would send your business names to current or prospective customers. Some people just share on their linked in profile. I wouldn't do that. You want to make sure the people who are responding who are giving you advice matter to your business might sound a little harsh. But, you know, my mom would give me nice feedback on about every business name. She wouldn't really help me narrow it down and tell me a name is terrible, so might not want to ask your spouse or your mom. You want to ask people that you want to sell to find people that are in your target market . People that matched your buyer persona. See what they think. See what names resonate with them. But you can ask family and friends. You just want to do that with caution. You want to make sure they are giving you honest feedback and that they make sense to your business. If your marketing towards 20 year olds and that's your main target market, probably doesn't matter what a 60 or 70 year old thinks and vice versa. If you marketing to 16 7 year olds, don't ask a teenager that really not gonna understand that. Probably give you they're going to give you information and feedback based on their background on their interests, not on what's important to you and your business customers. Then you want to evaluate yourself, too. It's not just about what other people think. You have to be comfortable with it to, in your opinion matters here, obviously. So you want to say each out loud several times. I always recommend business owners do that. Go through the list, say them out loud. Make sure you can say it clearly with your accent. Sometimes some words are really hard for me to say, so I'm never going to use them in a business name because people might not understand me. If I'm saying them, you have to be able to say the name clearly. For example, the word rural rural are you are a out. I just can't say. There's also some words, I say funny, like calculator or library. I'd stay away from those two, so make sure you can say those words clearly. People don't make fun of you for saying certain words cause that's gonna be distracting when you're talking about your business. Also, sleep on a given in a day or two. Don't try toe immediately say, Oh, that's what I'm going with. Just give it a little bit of time. I'd always say Give it 24 hours before you rule out a couple of the options that at first you might have been interested in. Just just give it a little bit of time because you might change your mind once you have time to really process the information. 24. Step 8 Trim List: step number eight. Now it's time to trim your list. So you want to remove all the name options that are not available as a domain name, are not available to trademark, do not feel right or even feel like they're not a possibility after looking over twice saying out loud testing with potential customers. So in at this point with the trim list, you probably wanna have a maximum of 4 to 5. You might have one, and you might be done, or you might have 20. You want to trim it down to four or five. After all, you're gonna pick 10 business names. You're gonna pick one, so trim the list of four or five. If you don't have any options left if you just trim the list in there, zero for stuff. I'm sorry, but you gotta stick with it. You can do this. You want to repeat step number four. Also consider including other types of names. Maybe you just picked really difficult name types and you were able to find ones that fit those. So consider different name types and go back to step for 25. Step 9 Finalize Your Name: Wu is time to finalize your business name. I hope you're ready. And I hope you're at a point where you feel comfortable with the business name that you have and you know that you have a winner when your name is available. Is a domain name not trademarked, loved by your target market? Remember, testing is important. People have told you, man, I really like that. And they're in your target market. They fit your buyer persona. That is probably a good fit. It should align with what makes ah, business name great. And naming considerations, which we covered earlier in this course in the name should also feel like the right fit for you. What's your gut telling you? What's your gut instincts say? If it matches all these, you probably have a fantastic name, and it's time to finalize and register your domain name. So to register your domain name, you choose a domain registrar. I choose Go daddy dot com and you want to go ahead and register their domain now, depending on how you want to set up your website, you might want to reroute that to your Web hosting company. You can do that pretty easily. There's a lot of ways to find out how to do that, but it is pretty easy. But for now, you probably don't want to create a website yet, but you want to reserve that name. It's okay. You can purchase that. You can let it sit. You could let it sit there for years. Just make sure you're receiving updates, so you know when to renew it or turn on auto renewal. But make sure just a purchase. It there is, I will tell you one promise. Several cautionary tales. There have been times where I have sent business names to clients, and they've absolutely loved one of them. They go to register, and in the time that I created it and checked Teoh, sending them to them and having them review, which might have been only 24 to 48 hours, somebody else has already reserved that name. Now I have seen information saying that people can tell what names have been searched. So if, like, five different people come across a domain name, but nobody registers it. Somebody might try to swoop it up because they see that as a valuable Tomei name. So don't let that scare you too much. But if you find a domain name that you really like just by it, purchase it, secure it. It will be anywhere from 10 to 15 bucks for a year. But make sure you get access to that. You don't want somebody else buying it person than trying to sell it to you for hundreds of thousands of dollars. So go ahead and register, and then you can transfer it to use for your website later down the road. So you have your business name, you haven't registered. What are the next steps? Well, you can create your website. You would start working on your logo and marketing materials there a lot of different places to get started with. That you might know. Ah, designer. Or you can find someone on a freelance Web site, whether the lance or oh, desk or fiver. Um, and you might wanna consider trademarking your business name to depends how big you want your brand to be some of your goals, but you might want to consider trademarking your business day. I wouldn't worry about that for a few years down the road, but it's something to consider and also social media handles, which we talked about earlier. Once you reserve your domain name, go ahead and get those social media handles, especially the ones that you're going to be featured on Instagram, Facebook, tic tac, whatever. Get those handles now so somebody doesn't steal them from you. 26. Project and Wrap Up: So your project, you should already know what this is. But you want to go ahead and register your domain name as we discussed, I want you to share a short description of your business and your domain. If it's registered, make sure you registered the business domain and then you share it on the course but share in the your project section off this course. I'm really excited to check these out.
