1. 01. INTRO: Hi there. My name is Ian within, professional photographer and filmmaker based here in the UK Thank you so much for checking out this class in this class. Are we talking about how to film yourself for a skill share class and online course? YouTube video? An interview. So being in front of the camera is way more difficult than being behind the camera, isn't it? If you're behind the camera, you can check your exposure your audio levels, your focus to make sure your videos coming out really well. But if you're the other side of the camera, you can't check out these things for yourself Now. If you're generating revenue, then if it's just yourself, then or about revenue is going to yourself. You're not paying somebody else. So putting a pan of practice into place for creating really good, high quality videos is essential. The more people that watch your videos, the more money you will generate for yourself. So the better your film or online class looks and sounds, the more likely you are to keep the audience retention really high. So ideally, what we're looking for is someone to start watching our class and continue watching right to the end. So if you're filming skill share, for example, the more minutes of watch time you have, the more money you generate as school share pay by the minute, slightly different for YouTube. But the outcome is very similar. YouTube will recommend you to other people based on your watch time minutes, your audience retention statistics. So keeping the viewer engaged with the video is essential for creating success on these platforms. In this course aimed to teach you everything you need to know, it's create a really high quality class. We'll be talking about equipment, audio setting, the camera, different setups, using natural light, using your smartphone, a GoPro camera, a muralist DSLR editing and so much more, I hope you enjoy the class. 2. 02. CLASS PROJECT: for the class product. I'd love to see some of your work. I really would. You can leave a screenshot of your thumbnail and a link to the video or classes. I could go and take a look and please leave a few notes as well about what you got most out of this course, the techniques that you used to improve your videos or course as well. I can't wait to see what you've created, Teoh. 3. 03. EQUIPMENT: having good equipment is essential for getting great looking videos, but that doesn't mean you have to go all out on purchasing expensive DSLR or muralist camera. Using a phone or a GoPro camera can give you X and results if special attention is made to lighting, composition and sound phones are GoPro cameras of a lot smaller senses an idea Salar or mirror list camera. This means that they're more sensitive to noise when shooting in poor lighting. If you're shooting indoors, you will likely see a lot more grain or noise in your footage than if you use professional dears laurel muralist cameras. So if you're shooting with your phone or go pro Kraemer, for example, having a really well lit space is essential for getting really clean image. So for some of this class of using a mirror list camera like I'm using right now to film this and also a lighting rig but also be showing you how you can get great looking footage with a GoPro camera that you can pick up used on eBay for less than £100 on also a smartphone, which everybody has access to nowadays, let's talk about the camera I'm currently filming with This is the Fuji X t three and that 18 to 55 millimeter kit lens. Reason I use this camera for food or classes is that not only is it quality great, but the face detection software built into this camera is amazing, too. This means that I can use a shallow depth of field, which gives a slightly out of focus background, which makes for a more cinematic feel. This also means that my amateur is fairly wide, meaning that more light is let into the camera. Me and I can shoot darker environments without adding noise of grain to the footage. Face detection will follow my face, meaning my face is always in focus. This makes filming yourself so much easier. Without face detection, I will manually focus the lens on a point. But I think all be sitting where my face will fall within seen. Obviously, this is quite difficult to set up, so sometimes I place a piece of card on the back of my chair. Broke us on that. Then when I sit down, I'm hoping that my face will fall within that plane of focus. Now this can be a little tricky as I move around the scene As I move forward, my face might fall out fakers, but I'll be talking about this a little bit more further on into the class. Former lighting have a small led panel and soft box. This was made by you Nero and only costs around £50. It's small, lightweight, portable on off was just enough light to create video such as this. I would also show a set up using natural window like a little further on next step. Is my audio set up. Having a really good quality audio is essential for creating really engaging videos. We have a couple of different ways of recording audio, depending on the situation. These are the Road Video Micro, the Tusk Um de Arte. An hour on the Sony T X 6 50 all deliver good quality audio suitable for skill share classes or YouTube videos. Finally, a tripod is really helpful, but you could set up your phone or go pro camera on a table top if you don't have one. Having expensive equipment is great, but it's far better to use good techniques with cheap equipment than it is to use bad techniques with expensive equipment. Let's go and take a look at some of these awesome techniques we can use and put together to create amazing looking videos. 4. 04. USING A CAMERA & LIGHT SETUP: Let's talk about the set of I'm using today to film this particular module with its. I have my camera on a tripod around four feet or so away from me with a road video micro on the camera to pick up a good quality audio. Now the audio is only for backup and sinking purposes. I'm wearing a love Micah's Well, I also with Sony Tick 6 50 in my top pocket as an example of what that could deliver or now cut between them to show you the difference in the audio quality between the three devices . So this is the audio sound from the Road Video Micro, which is placed on top of the camera, gained four feet away from May. Now this will be the lowest quality in terms of the audio, as it's a first away from my source, which is my mouth. As you can see here, I have the task, um, d r l 10 love Mike clipped into my shirt, and this is a really good quality audio package on offers. A really, really good sound here we can see in the top here I have of Sony Tick 6 50 which essentially is a Dictaphone, but also offers very, very good audio quality when place close to the source at a really affordable price point. I'll be talking about all of these audio sources in a lot more detail further on into the course. So, as I mentioned earlier, my camera is positioned on the tripod facing May. Usually I frame my shut up to create a noise composition and a couple of tests clips to make sure I'm framed up properly, that I have my chair at the right height except or then check my exposure. I'm using the L E D light just off to one side, which provides lighting to my face. Having it to one side adds in some shadow detail and stops the light from spilling onto my backdrop. Once my life is set up, I now check my exposure on the camera and run off a few more clips to make sure everything looks great. I'm shooting manually at 24 frames per second at four K 24 frames per second, gives us a very similar motion blur to what we see with their own eyes. This gives us a much more natural cinematic field to our footage because I'm filming at 24 frames per second. I want to keep my shutter speed double my frame rate again. This is vital for getting a cinematic field. This is called the 180 degrees shutter angle. By increasing the shutter speed past this, your footage look more jittery and not so smooth. So with my frame rate, my shutter speed on my light all set only have two of the ways in which to adjust my exposure of the camera and that is the aperture on the ice. So now I want to try and keep my eyes so as low as I possibly can, this being we're gonna have the cleanest image, the higher the ice. So the more noise will introduce into the image to keeping the eye so low as possible is vital. That really leaves the aperture on for the way I've got things set up here. I want to keep my aperture as wide as possible. That means I've got a very shallow depth of field. That means my backdrop will fall out with focus and the focus and the attention will remain on my face on that gives an overall cinematic look makes the whole thing look a lot more pleasing to the eye and a lot more professional looking as my video like is set to full power on my aperture wide A 3.2 I really just want I s so just a little bit to get the right exposure for May in this room with no ambient writing it all by eso 320 gets me a nice, evenly balanced shop and a clean noise free image. Obviously, this will depend on the lighting situation within your room. So, as I mentioned previously, this camera has a face detection autofocus built into software which is really good, which means whenever I move around in the scene that little boxes staying on my face, meaning that the focus remains on my face and this makes filming so much easier, it really does. This allows me to use a shallow depth of field because I know focus will always remain on my face. And this camera I can really trust the countries that I've had in the past that the face detection just hasn't bean up to scratch, and I've not been able to use that feature for filming videos like this. Prior to owning this camera, I would focus manually on a point where I would be sitting. This works well, but if you're using a wide aperture, if you move slightly further forward or further back, your face is gonna fall out of focus. So in focusing manually, I think it's a good idea to use a slightly narrower aperture or higher F number. This will give you a larger depth of field meaning distance of what is actually in focus will be larger, and this gives you more wiggle room to move around. The downside to this, though, is that you'll need to raise your eyes so or the power of your light to compensate for the smaller aperture as less light will be let in through the lens. 5. 05. USING A PHONE & NATURAL LIGHT: so we talked about getting great footage with the muralist camera. Let's talk about using devices such as a smartphone or an action camera like a GoPro. Now these devices are great. They offer really, really good quality video. But what we do need to do is make sure we've got a really nice well, it's space in which to recorded. Try to film by a large window is not directly facing the sun. If the sun hits the front of your house during the day, choose to film at the back of the house. This will give you a much more even write sores than you would if you had the sun directly entering the room that you're shooting in set of your chair. Facing the window with your camera between you and the window, make sure that you have a nice, Uncluttered, easy on the eye backdrop. I'll be filming this in my kitchen and from the patio doors. So if you're recording on a smart final GoPro camera and you have four K available highly recommend that you choose this option, this will give you some reframing options in post production. If you're exporting at HD 10 80 p. I also recommend that you make sure you've got plenty of storage on your device as well, because if you're shooting and four K, it will eat up memory very, very quickly. Depending on your device, you may or may not have the choice of manual settings. If you device supports different frame rates again, choose 24 frames per second for that cinematic field, said a white balance that works well for your situation. I avoid using auto White. Balance Is this can change during your recording. I usually have mindset to daylight from shooting by window. Be sure to turn off any lights within the room as this could really mess with your white balance. When using a natural window light next up, plugging your mic and film your stuff and see what you can come up with. Now, if you want Mawr manual controls over your smartphone, a great up is filmic pro. This app is available for Android and IOS. This essentially converts. You'll phone controls into amore. Dear Salah type of field. Let's have a little fun. Can you tell the difference between my Fuji X t three Clip the GoPro clip on this really old Sampson galaxy s five clip 6. 06. IMPROVE YOUR AUDIO: great audio is vital for having an engaging video now, especially if you create an online course. Having poor audio could actually get your course rejected by the likes of skill share. It's not up to scratch, so having a really good audio quality is essential, creating great online courses, and it really helps to engage the viewer and make them feel more comfortable when viewing. I'm watching your content. The three mikes I discussed earlier are all great. They'll have different price points, but all on deliver great results if used correctly. First up in the cheapest option of the three is a road video micro, which you can pick up around £35 or 43 U. S. Dollars. Next, we have the Sony T X 6 50 which costs £90 or around 115 years dollars. And these are a great alternative to a love Micah's. They're cheaper and easier with no wires. You can clever into your shirt or drop it in a pocket, but you will need to sync up your audio in postproduction later on. Thirdly, we have the task MDR 10. Now it is a fabulous love. Mike set up and it's discreet and offers really good audio quality. And that's what I've used to film the majority of this class. Today. These cost around £170 or $215. But again, you will need to sync up this in post production. But are we covering that a little bit later on in the video, let's quickly talk about how to record good quality audio. Now, if you're using a microphone on the camera, essentially, it's gonna be picking up room noise as well as your own vocals. Now, the closer that microphone is bought two wars, the source, the better. The quality of that audio is going to be a is gonna pick up more of your voice. The voice is gonna be cleaner. He's gonna cut less of that ambient room. Sound this particular room on filming in now you can hear road traffic going by you near the home of my computer, my dogs in the living room. It picks up some sounds of their moving around as well. So yeah, it's very, very difficult to get rid of these sounds. So the closer we can get on microphone to the source more chance we've got of recording really, really good, high quality audio sounds. So if the camera on the mic is four feet away, the Michael pick up the room noise along with the audio. However, the closer I get to the mic, the better the sound becomes. That's why I love Marks are so good because they clip discreetly to a shirt. A good option for recording with a directional mike such as the Road Video Micro is by removing it from the camera on placing it nearer by using an extension lead. If you don't mind having the mike in your shot, you could place it directly in front of you. However, I prefer not to see a microphone in my shots and would suggest either placing it above or just below just out of the shop. This is the sound off the road video micro placed four feet away from me on top of the camera. This is the sound of the road video might create, placed around about a foot away from my mouth. As you can see, it's so much clearer on the audio. Quality is so much better. The great thing about using on on camera directional mikes such as the Road Video Micro is because it's plugged into the camera. Is sinking that audio with the footage that you get in one file, whereas using a love Mike's, which is this requires the sinking in post production. So talk a little bit about the different mikes and it took about the room because the room is so important, Onda really can make or break your audio. Now this room is terrible for audio, really is. I've got a tin roof, but a lot of different sounds in here. I've got a hardwood floor on the sounds just bounce around and we get this reverberation, this echo in the room, and it doesn't provide great audio experience. So what I do to try to help that situation little bit is hang blankets up and I've got some blankets I've got from around the house that I put up whenever I'm doing talking head videos in here. So blanket hanging upon some light stands without a tower on the desk in front of May, blankets over their rug on the floor, and these soft furnishings help so that sound and stop the sound bouncing around your room . I highly recommend you do this. Blankets are obviously something that most people have their cheap on, that easy to put up and obviously pack away when you're finished. They're obviously there are some professional things that you can do is, well, like adding sound panels. But these are all very expensive. And to just do a few online courses or weekly YouTube videos. Blankets were great, and they really do do a good job. Now, if you want to do a voice over really good quality voiceover, I can highly recommend heading to a room like a bedroom, where you put a lot of soft furnishings close the windows do very their carpets, rugs open up your closets, closets soaking that Ambien audio as well. All of these things can help to reduce the echo on them or echo. You can reduce the better quality. Your audio. Kobe 7. 07. USING B-ROLL: So let's talk about B roll and how we can use B roll to support our a role. So be role is essentially supporting footage, this footage that we can film separately to the talking head footage that we can use to paste over the top of the film Teoh engage the viewer to keep the viewer's interest. So, for example, if I'm talking about changing a lens on the camera, I can show a video of me changing the lens on the camera on. This will help explain what I'm talking about, but it also engaged the viewer more and help retain their interest within the video. B roll is great as well, because we can use it to be a little bit crafty as well. And I always use it for this method in particular, and that is to cover up jump cuts within my video. Now I very rarely get through a whole class online class in one take on I do. Two or three probably takes every single time I do one on. I'll choose the best bits from each take. Now I can cover up the different cuts behind the B roll on the viewer will never know on this really takes the pressure off creating these classes because essentially, I can read some of the reason of the text help for pre written it. I can use B roll to cover up pieces that are perhaps struggling with, you know, variably put out to camera. Some some things are quite difficult to explain, and reading them is a lot easier. Obviously, you can't really sit there and read to camera. It looks a bit off putting and not engaging for the viewer. So if you can cover it up by using B roll, it can really, really help take the pressure off creating videos. It could really make the whole process a lot easier on. If it makes it easier for you, you're more likely to create Maurin the future. So you create some really good B roll overlay that on top of your footage, take the pressure off during talking head. It makes it so much more engaging for the viewer and less stressful to make a well. So during the equipment section, which was Module three in this class, you have noticed my shots of the equipment. While I was discussing each piece of gear. Oh, jeez, in close up footage of each item. And this allowed me to read large sections from one notes, is a voice over, and this is so much easier to put together and visually engages the viewer to the straight on talking head shots can get a little bit boring after a while. This next few clips are a section of B roll that I ever laid over a voice Avery during the recent YouTube video. And as you can see, I'm take talking about certain parts were photographed. I'm taken and I'm showing view exactly. I'm talking about as I'm talking and it makes a video way more engaging really helps to keep the people watching the longer. 8. 08. USING INFOGRAPHICS: another great way of engaging the viewer and reduced in pieces to camera actually is by using infographics. Now, infographics are great for explaining complicated things to the viewer, and it makes it so much easier for the viewer to be able to see a visual representation of what you're trying to explain. I sometimes designed my infographics in photo shop. There are many great tools out there. A great free option is camber. It could make some stunning designs that can really bring your video to life. All of the infographics in this course were designed encumber for free, using infographics to help tell your story will help with audience retention. Cover up Kurtz. I'll make the video Maura peeling and professional looking. Again, you'll be able to do a voice over over these sections alone you to read directly from a script. As I'm doing right now. You can also use infographics as an intro into each module or video to give you an insight into what they're about to watch. 9. 09. ADDING MUSIC TO YOUR VIDEOS: So let's talk about music now. Using inspiring music, and our videos can really help pull the audience, and it can really help draw them into your class. And it's especially effective for an intro. I definitely recommend using inspiring music to try to get the viewer to watch the rest of you, cause now they're all several options for putting music onto your videos. But what we can't do is use pop music so, unfortunately, can't use the latest said sharing song that's gonna be restricted by copyright laws. Now what we can do is apply cruelty free music to our video. So let's talk about royalty, free music and the options that we have. I subscribe to complete called Art List, which lets me have unlimited access to a massive library of tunes. I can use this for YouTube until a over my wedding films. For commercial use, you'll find a link below, which will give you two minutes of music and art list absolutely free, which is really good in a highly suggested check out. The great thing about artist is they have a huge library of music, and even if you unsubscribe from their subscription package you still have the right to use the music in your videos or courses that you have already created with that music on this protection moving forward in the long term. Another good option is YouTube. They offer a royalty free library. If you have a YouTube channel, you can use any of their songs for free. There are several Other options are Audio Jungle. If you just look into license one track a time. Although these will be a lot more expensive, it's now have chosen some great music. Let's talk about the levels we really need to get those levels right. We wanted me out to lay that music over. There are vocals, but we don't when it's drowned the vehicles out. But we still wanted to be heard, so getting those levels is is critical. Now I think it's best to use instrumental tracks rather than tracks with vocal. We don't really want to have two vehicles clashing, all competing with each other. Yes, so instrumentals are highly recommended quite often with a lot of the music libraries out there, such as art list, there have several options of each track so than ever tracked with vocals on an instrumental track. So which is really great for person projects? You might have a break when you're not talking what you can overlay the vocal version on. And then when you doing pieces to come here, then you can go back to instrumental version and just cut between them. So it keeps consistency so highly. Recommend chicken out our list. And like I said, there's a link down below so you can go and check out that two months free subscription package. 10. 10. EDITING: So let's quickly talk about editing. Obviously, editing could be a course, all of its own. So I'm just briefly going to dive into what my timeline looks like. How everything's cut up now the audio sync so you can get a feel for how I've made this class. Now I use a day be Premiere Pro If you know familiar with the Davies software. It's a subscription package that you can subscribe to on pay on a monthly basis, and it's exceptional, really is. Obviously, we have access to a baby light room baby photo shop on bond. Don't be Premiere Pro, but there are like software they have available as well, such as after effects if you want to get really technical with the graphics and stuff that you're doing. But yeah, don't be Premiere Pro. ItT's a great program. I use it for all of my commercial wedding films. And that's how the thing as well as my you cheap so good free option is DaVinci Resolve 16 . This is totally free and should be a great tool for editing video, such as talking head in online classes. Personally, I have never used resolved, but I do know many video offers that have, and they say that it's very good. So it might be worth if you don't want Teoh subscribed, Teoh Adobe Premiere Pro or something like that. Then you go and check out DaVinci resolve and see if that works for you before you know you part with your cash. So let's quickly dive into Premiere Pro and show you what my timeline looks like for this course and run through the quick editing. Okay, so here we are in a dhobi premiere pro. And as you can see, this is how my online course looks. This is all of the modules in this. In this course on, we're gonna be working on just this one module here, which was the infographics more joke. I'm gonna show you how it's all put together and how it's all layers. So let's zoom into this a little bit more. You can see there we are now, basically a day before inquiry works in a layering method. So we have all of our tracks laid upon top of each other. So here we can see our video track on. This is the audio track that was embedded within that a video track, and then I'm below that. Here we can see our love Mike audio track. So this is our love Mike Audio track. Now, if I just made this out, for example, I can quickly show you how we sink these up, literally. Just highlight both of the audio tracks on, right. Click on them on, then come up to synchronize. Just simply hit synchronize Andi. But they'd be premier. Pray will do its thing here now. Always takes a few seconds. Just this process to work on the sinks or of the peaks in the audio track up and bring those two together, which is great. As you can see, that's moved that automatically for us. Now the audio tracks are lined up. What I do is mute the native audio track so we can't hear that at all. So the only sounds are coming through off from the love mike. So as I play that through now, I'm not gonna show the audio on this because it will compete with what I'm saying. But you get the idea now below this, we have our music track. Andi was I said before we needed to get the levels Correct. Now we can move this decibels off the track up and down until we get the right levels so we can make sure we get our music and our vocals just right now above the video track, I've got an adjustment Ray which have pasted onto the top off that, and I've made some adjustments. And essentially, what this is doing is making adjustments to everything below that layer. So basically, for this was just making adjustments to lay below. And I go over to the Dmitri of Color panel, which is essentially adjusts. The color contrasts highlights saturation of our video footage. So if we go to creative, you can see here I've added a wedding let which is a lot that I use for a lot of my work. It's called Trudy, and I was the first bride, as she made the look for Andi just stuck with that name. But essentially, this is a look that I paste over the top, allows me just Teoh. No, bring it a bit more detail, make this make the image look a bit more saturated, a little bit more contrast and adds a little bit more of filming look. So if we could make that to the total truck output here, we can turn that track off completely. Onda. You can see the difference that luck makes to the image not a huge difference, but just gives it a bit of a boost on that makes it look a little bit more pleasing to the eye. A little bit more cinematic looking, which is really nice. Now if we're coming, scroll over here, we'll see another layer. Now these are the infographics I used, and as you can see, these sits above the adjustment layer for my Lut on also more video track. So because it's on top, that means that it is masking out everything that's below it. So you can see, is the infographic say, As we scroll through here, you'll see that change as the infographic is changing, too. Then when we get right to the end here, you can see I've just dropped him a note B roll. As I was explaining, how is using the camera set up in from to the patio doors there so you can see the GoPro cameras again that just sits in another layer above that further down this end, I added in a little bit of text to my video. We can do that by communicated to the textile on simply taking on the screen and typing in the text that we want. I just asked you the question there, whether you could tell the difference between the phone smartphone, the food 63 on the go pro camera On game here, you can see three video tracks on top of each other and some text, so let me just quickly show you what they do. Turn them off. You can see here the tracks disappearing so you can see each individual one on. Basically, what I've done here is just reduce the scale of the each clip on, positioned it on the timeline there. So if we come over to our effect controls here on the left inside, you can see the scale of each one of these is 30% so it's 30% smaller than the original size of the image. So you might have remembered earlier that I spoke about shooting in four K and the benefits that can give you reframing. Now I see everything in four K. That means I've got twice as much resolution if I'm out putting a 10 80 p. So let's take a quick look at this clip here. If we come over to the effects control panel here, we can see our scale is set to 50%. So if we alter that to 100% this is how much we can zoom into the image of output in HD 10 80 p without losing any resolution. So you can see it can give you so many options for reframing your shopped, my composition, this anywhere I can just make the emphasis on my hands if I wanted to and still have a usable clip without losing any resolution. So four K can really help you re framing reframing your shots or adding emphasis to a certain part off your image. Now, as you can see on my timeline here, I've got these gaps in between each section. Now, these are all the different modules I've got here in Adobe Premiere Pro Toe will be exporting these individually, essentially just exporting a module at a time when we can do that by creating an in and an out point, as I have done here by President I for In and 04 out. We could just drag those to end and the start of our clip. And then when we come over to the export section here but export, our media will just be exporting between the in N out points. Now we have many different options for exporting. Andi. I generally choose videos 10. 80 p set up for exporting to skill share. So I think that works really well. But I do make a few different selections as well. On I choose rendered maximum depth. Just make sure I've got V b R. One passed selected Andi These are levers default and then I use use maximum render quality Here is well before I export my final video. 11. 11. CREATE YOUR VIDEOS: So I hope you enjoy the class. I really, really enjoyed making. It was great to share these tips and tricks with you. Now. One thing I would like to say here is if you haven't started an online course or YouTube channel or making videos online, just go out there and make a star. I wasted so much time around about a year thinking about making it and start in a YouTube channel. Andi, it was just a wasted year. I made so many different excuses. Why couldn't start one on it just went on and went on and on until eventually I made my first YouTube video. It was not great, to be honest, I have to say, but it made a start and it got me on the right course, and after a period of time, my videos increased, you know? And then they got better on. I was then uploaded on a weekly basis, and now yeah, I've been uploading weekly for around about two years, and I built a really nice core audience that engage with my content on. We have really good conversations in the comments on I've been able to build my website where I sell prince and merchandise and other products. No so awful 1 to 1 workshops and that's all Come through. You cheap, Andi? Yeah, If I didn't have started, I wouldn't be in that position now. But also, I wish I had a started that, you know, that previous year, cause I would be a year further on now, which would have been obviously better as well. So yeah, my my thoughts, I just go out there and get started. Don't make any excuses and make your first video. Or if you're already making videos, use the tips and tricks that you've learned in this video to improve the ones that you're making. A swell. Yeah, go out there and just create something even if it is just with a smartphone, because you can still do incredible videos just with a smartphone.
