About This Class

In this class, you will understand the basics of video editing using iMovie on your iPad - a free software which is pre-installed. We'll be making a YouTube-style video demonstrating how to solve a Rubik's Cube. We will be using several free resources to enhance our project.

This class can be broken down into three small steps:

  1. Colour correction - Before you start editing, we will colour correct our footage using the in-built photos application on your iPad.
  2. The heavy lifting - We'll learn how to perform basic edits such as cutting, moving clips around and adding music/sound effects.
  3. The finesse - To spice up your project, we'll be using several iMovie features that can really make the viewer engaged with your video. We'll be learning techniques such as writing on the screen, splitting the screen in two and using the picture-in-picture function.

If you're new to video editing or if you want to make use of all the features on iMovie, this class is for you!

1. Introduction: whether it's for your business or personal brand. Anyone can benefit from learning the skill off video editing with an iPad and I'm movie, which is already downloaded on your iPad. You can learn this skill, and the beauty off I'm movie is in its simplistic design, allowing anyone to learn this skill. In this course. We will cover basic techniques, the basic user interface, how we can color correct clips before you start editing before we learn more complicated techniques such as the picture in picture technique, how we can fade in and out audio, the cutaway technique and the split screen. Also, I will show you how you can right onto the screen. Hi, my name is Junior's. I'm a medical student, and in my spare time I create content. I work part time for my university creating content at the start. We will be going very slowly to help you understand the basics off video editing and I'm movie before progressing into the more complicated techniques. So feel free to watch it at two times speed. If you wish. Let's get started 2. Colour Correction (Before You Edit): before you start actually importing clips and creating projects I would recommend considering color correcting each clip. Although I movie provides you with several filters that you may choose to add to your project, it doesn't provide you with much flexibility. Using an external EP gives you more flexibility, and I will be demonstrating how you can use the inbuilt photos EP on your iPad. So go to the photos EP on your iPad and find your clip that you want to ed. So I want to add this slip of me solving the Rubik's Cube. I select it it and go under this button, and it will give me some options for me to color. Correct this footage if I have no time. Sometimes I would select water, and it does some color correcting for me. Sometimes I use this as a guide to start my color correcting process. So here exposure I can change. The exposure highlights shadows, contrast brightness, which is the absolute brightness off all the colors. Black point. How dark the darkest spots are saturation. If I increased saturation, increase the intensity of all colors. Vibrance, however, will only increase the intensity off the muted colors, tent shopping, this definition noise reduction vignette. That's when the in just a Dhaka. I try not to overuse vignettes when possible. Definition all these features, I recommend playing around with it, seeing what you think looks nice trying auto at the start. Also, try not to bring a certain component all the way to one end of the spectrum, for example, saturation. If I bring this all the way here, some colors are completely blown out, and this leads to something called post or ization, which doesn't look very good. 3. Importing Clips: Now that you're happy with the colors of your clip, it's time to import into I'm movie, create a new project and select movies. This will give us a blank canvas. Trailers allow you to follow templates to make a movie style trailer. You can preview your clips by holding onto a clip, then select all the photos or videos that you want to import. The order in which you select the clips will dictate the order. It will appear on your timeline. If you forgot to import a clip, no worries. You can import it later. I want to do that. You will see all the clips on your timeline. If you decide that you want to add another clip to your project, find it on the panel on the right. You can get a preview off the video before you add it. When you're ready to add it, click the plus symbol. Make sure it's in the desired position on your timeline before you click it. If it isn't no worries, you can drag and move it around after 4. The User Interface: the layout off I'm movie is simple. On the top lift, I see a preview of the project on the top right is where I can access my media. On the bottom is the timeline. The play head shows me where I am in the project. You can pinch to zoom on the timeline. If you long press on the left inside of the project, it will take me to the start. And if I long pres on the right hand side of the project, it will take me to the end. If you're unsure what any of the buttons mean, you can hit the question mountain button, and it won't tell you. If you want to switch projects, you can click done back to projects and click on another one. But to return, you click on the project you're working on, and it the Settings button allows you to add a project filter toe all the clips in your projects. You can also change the theme. Let's stick to Simple because it gives us more flexibility. You can choose to add a soundtrack for the selected theme. You can choose to fade in at the start of the project. or fade out at the end. Also, you have the ability to choose with a speech. Changes will effect. Pitch the microphone button lets you record a voiceover, and the camera button allows you to take photos or videos through the EP. 5. Basic Editing: Now let's get started with the actual editing. If I want to change the order off, the clips hold and dragged the clip to the desired spot. If I select a clip, I see two larger handles at the start and end off the clip. If I drag one of these handles, I can choose to short in the clip or lengthen it. Alternatively, if I went to short in the clip, I can go to the spot, which I want the clip to end selected, select, split and delete the unwanted portion. If I miss up, I can always select Undo, which is located here. If I tap and hold on the screen with two fingers, I can rotate a clip. Once I select the clip, I have several options. I can choose to detach audio. This is very useful. If you have audio that's overlapping with multiple clips, or if you only want part off the audio of a clip playing, you also have the ability to duplicate a clip. If we go back to selecting the clip, we have several options. Currently, we're under actions, but if we go under speed, I can change the speed off a clip. Frieze allows me to frame hold, which means a frame will be held for particular length of time. For example, say I want this frame held. So now it's gonna hold this frame for the set duration until ends around here and you go back to playing normally. So that's freeze. Ed allows us to create speed rents. That's when sittin portion off the clips can be played at a faster speed than others. This is very useful sometimes. Say this part. I really want it played fast because it got quite boring and I just wanted to just demonstrate my point. So that's a very useful feature to now say, I don't like all this speed alteration. I can just select reset, and it resets back to one time speed Volume allows me to change the volume of a clip. Say I want this slip particularly quiet. I can drag this volume to 72% and it works very well. Also, say I want this start off this clip really loud in the second portion off this clip. Relatively quiet, I can split the clip and select the 1st 1 to make it loud, and the second half of it to be quiet. Also, I can choose to add titles. I will elaborate on this a bit later on. Filters allow us to place filters on individual clips. Personally, I find these filters a bit too much. So I prefer to color correct on the EP, as shown in the previous video. So this is a completely different clip. I just want to briefly demonstrate how you can zoom in on a clip to hide mistakes. So here I had to look at the script, and here I'm talking again. So I really need to cut out that pause in the middle so I'll make a split somewhere in the middle and then our zerman on the second clip, making the transition more smooth, and it can hide mistakes a lot easier. I will Clignet little plus button at the top off this second clip in our zoom a little bit . Also, if you're willing to turn your name into a personal brand and then I'll find the in point where went to Zoom back out. No. So I think here would be a good place to zoom back out. I'll make a split and then how? Zoom out on the later clip and now we should have a seamless transition to hide a mistake. If you watch YouTube is closely, you're noticed that they do this quite often. 6. Edit to the Beat: So if you're filming a vlog type video editing to the B can really make the audience like it, and there may not even know why. Notice how each cut was timed to the beat and notice how each clip is a different duration . You want to mix it up. You don't want it to be very consistent and predictable. Sometimes. Do it on the on beat, sometimes do it off the offbeat Let's watch it again. Now let's watch it again, where all the clips are the same duration, and it's very predictable. Hopefully, you'll see that the 1st 1 was much better. Making the audience always on their toes makes your video more engaging, and hopefully mixing it up would sieve your edits. 7. Transitions: transitions can really add to your clip when done well. So if we select this icon here, we can choose to change the transition. So we select the nun. This means there is no transition and it's just a jump cut. Let's see how it looks. So it just jumps from one clip to the other clips a hard cut, every select theme. Then it will be whatever transition that is associated with the theme off the footage we selected. Simple. So this is how it looks pretty good. Then we can choose dissolve, which means it's a cross dissolve. It's just a smooth transition. It's like a blend almost. Then we can have this slide. We can have the wipe, which is slightly different from this line, and we can have a fade. Also, you have the ability to change the duration off the transitions. For example, this cross dissolve. If I want it really slow. I can select two seconds now. Oh, slowly crossed his over. Alternatively, I can make it super short, and one more thing you can choose if you want to leave the sound effect on during the transition for examples, the themes under effect it's currently on right now. Just let have a listen. But then, if I want to, I can turn this sound effect off. Transitions can take away from storytelling. If it's overused, I would recommend trying out some in built camera transitions. What I mean by this, I'll quickly show you what I mean here. So this was done by two shots. The first shots was me filming the Rubik's Cube and then flicking my camera out. So there's motion blur, and then I adjusted it so that it matches the motion blur off the next clip coming into the solved Rubik's Cube. So this was how it did it. So the first shot was me slowly panning the Rubik's Cube. And then I quickly swiped right with my phone to get that motion blur. Then the second shot was zooming in from the motion, blood zooming in from left to right and then slowing down to see the solved Rubik's Cube like a bit. So this is just another way to play with transitions. It's pretty fun to do but remember that too many transitions can distract the viewer from the message 8. Adding Titles: So now we want to add some titles. I movie has some limited capabilities to ed titles, but I will demonstrate it first, so you have to decide where you want the titles. So say I won the title from here to some way here, so I'll have to make a cut here split. And now I select this clip and I go under titles. Here. I have a selection to choose from. I can choose whether or not there is sound effects as well. For example, let's just try one of these. It's trite standard. Say I want to type in Rubik's Cube, the knife to go to this one delete or this Italy or this And yeah, as you can see, it's quite limited is just here. I can move it around. I can't animate it about from the information that they provided us with. It's quite basic. I can choose for them to allow a sound effect that's built in to be played. Let's go ahead and scrambled it. I'm not sure if you can hear that, but there was a slight sound effect at the start. Let's have a look at some other templates. Let's try focus. So let's have a look with this UN effect on, Let's go ahead and scrambled. Okay, sweets. So that was focus. Yeah, there's a variety of these that you can use for some of them. You have the ability to choose whether you want it here or lower. For example, On this one, I can select lower, and it appears here instead. So if you don't want it in the middle of your frame, you can always select lower and appears there. So those were some of the titles that I movie offers. There are several here, allows you to put it in the middle or in the bottom. Lift allows you to have sound effects. But I was demonstrate to you a method which I much prefer. And that's using an app, which is already inbuilt. And that is called Keynote. So let's go to presentations. Let's create a new presentation on keynote. This EP should have come with your iPad. So let's just go to basic White say I want the same thing again. Say I don't want all this sweet Rubiks Cube. No, I can animate this nail, so I select it. I select animate no I can add an action. For example, I can create the path I can j go. I can pop back in pulse. Let's have a look at bounce. There we go. Flip. There was a bit too much for me. I like create path. I'll show you how I like to create path so I would move this first all the way out of the frame. Delete this flip action, which I accidentally created at action. Create path. Then I'll drag this into the frame. So I like that movement like that. So I had it done done. If I play it right now, there we go. So now I need to export this as MP for so I have to go export the movie Export Save video. Now if we hit back into my movie, let's delete this title and now it's here. Let's go add it real quick. I need it to be a green slash blue screen because I want the title to appear on top off this image. I don't want it. Teoh cover the whole screen, so no, it's here. I have to tap on the color to make it transparent. There we go and Now it comes in. Let's have a look. Let's go ahead and scrambled this. There you go. You can play around with all the options. You can do other animations, but the main point I'm trying to drive at you is that try to use keynote or impossible because it gives you more customization options, and it just looks a little bit more nice, in my opinion. 9. Write on the Screen! Green Screen: so writing on the screen is really cool feature that can help your footage stand out. To do this is actually not too hard. First, you have to go to the notes ep on your iPad, then what you have to do. You have to think about something that you would want to write. Make sure that you right in the place that you want it to appear in your video. For example, if I wanted to appear on the left inside off my video are right on the left hand side on the no tip. Then, once I've decided what I want to write, I will go and select the record button the screen record button. And then when it appears here, then I can write. What if I want? So good luck when making your video tell me how it goes, please. Then if I swept back, it appears here. Then say I want it. Sell once it. So once it here. Then I select that clip and I click this thought that button grain slash blue screen. There it is. No, it saves Tep a color to make it transparent. I'll take this black color, but as you can see there are still remnants off all these additional items, which I do not want. So what I do I select this button drag corners to exclude area, so I don't want it here. Don't want this bottom part, and now it's excluded and invite. Drink this along. I can see that it's say is good luck. This probably isn't the best color for this video, but hopefully you get the point. Good, Nuck, so you can experiment with this. You can do squiggles whatever you want to. As you can see here is still remnants off the screen recording, which is unwanted so I can just drag this around here. It should be gone. Yep, sweet. So that's how you write on the screen. If I would add a video where I don't want to show the background like a talking head shot or, in this case, a Rubik's Cube shots, I do the same method. Step two a color to make it transparent. It's transparent. No, I can adjust. How transparent wanted the strength off the filter. That looks pretty good for this shot. I can adjust the borders as well, but yet there looks pretty good for me. 10. Cutaway, Picture in Picture & Split Screen: There are several features off I movie which make it really good for us is educators Teoh demonstrate stuff. So I recorded a video of me talking simultaneously while recording a video of me demonstrating how to solve a Rubik's Cube so I can add this video multiple ways to help demonstrate my point. So if I click the video of me talking, inflict the dot, dot dot I have several options. Aiken, do cutaway cutaway means that the video of me talking or whatever video you're reading will be placed on top off whatever clip was previously below it. When you select cut away by default, the clip that you place on top hasn't volume. So if you want, you have to go in and put volume on. That clip is just at the bottom clip will have volume. So if both of them have volume, it sound real fuzzy. So what you want to do? You either turn off the volume of the bottom one or the top one. What you can do, you can detach the audio from this slip and turn off the volume from this bottom one. Then it should be pretty good here. We have a cute It is six sided. There is a sense of peace. Obviously you can't just be me talking for the entire video clip. So what I would do? I would cut away my face at certain parts or action split and say here I want to split it here. I would delete this middle bit and then it cuts from my face to the demonstration. It is six sided. There is a centerpiece on each side. It doesn't move the mid. So what you do, so yeah. As you can see, this is a really cool feature. You can just demonstrate, then talk, demonstrating. Talk. If you're educating about something like this Rubik's Cube tutorial. We also have something called the picture in picture, Picture and picture is when you can have a smaller window placed inside the larger video. So this is very common amongst YouTube tutorials. I'm sure you've seen it before. It's very useful and very good for demonstration so I can move this box to wear by one. Usually bottom right is convention. Then you will notice that there are white boxes around this image so I can do I can select the clip removed the white box by selecting this. As you can see, there is no audio in the slip and I can add some audio. You will notice that there is no odor here. And if I want to make these two perfectly sync, I can do that because I clapped at the start and that allows me to sink the audio. I'll see what I mean. I can increase this Odier and I would detach this older. Then I can make this shorter until the audio's match. So I think they met Shia, so that's close enough. If you want, you can zoom in until it's like met. Then it's then you can perfectly sync it about. There would be perfect, in my opinion. Yeah, so then, since it's sync perfectly, I can turn off one of the clips say I don't want this order from hearsay. The recording device for audio isn't as good for this tulip Out go volume, Turn it off and now everything will be sync perfectly. Obviously I don't want a clip of me clapping so I would split everything. I'll delete this first delete this, then delete this. Now I should be perfectly singing So that's picture in picture. A very useful tool. Klestil it that next up we will demonstrate split screen split screen is really cool. It allows us to have a split like this. 1/2 of the screen is me talking. The other half of the screen is demonstration. So, as usual, you can do the previous process as demonstrated before to sync audio. But this is again a really cool feature. And yeah, I like this feature a lot. Is that there? Ah, since the pieces that don't. So yep, that's some features. Green and blue screen was as mentioned before, and order only allows you to ed only the audio and not the image off the clip. 11. Adding Soundtracks & Sound Effects: music and sound effects can really add to your video to I'm movie has several soundtracks that I built in already. For example, let's try this evergreen sound trick. Let's add it to a clip. So here we have a cute it is excited. Yeah, it's added. We can adjust its volume. We usually don't want background music to be that allowed because it takes away from the actual demonstration. For me, there be a bit quiet around here. I'd say it would be fine. These are called corner piece through. That sounds good to me, but if you don't want any of these inbuilt treks, you can always go online, and I'll show you those places quickly. But before they are quickly demonstrates on sound to fix which you can add, say an applause, chuck it on like that whenever he saw the side of the Keeble something you can just check it in. You can move it around wherever you want it. You can change the volume speed duplicate. You can put it in the background, but then it remove your soundtrack with so I don't recommend it. But yeah, that's sound effects from the in built yet But if you want to seek outside for sound effects, I'll demonstrate that. No. So let's demonstrate where you can get music and sound to fix for free using an EP court documents. You need this EP if you want to download it from your iPad directly. Alternatively, you can download it on your laptop and transferred to your iPad, but I prefer to download it directly. So for music and sound effects, if you're uploading to YouTube at highly, highly, highly recommend you tip Audio Library here under the documents EP under browser, we can see all these songs which are available if you are making a YouTube video. Also, there is a vast range off sounded fix, too. So say, I want to install one of these. I clicked download, and it should be here I click done, so it's downloading. As you can see here, it's downloading. Almost. There's pretty quick, so if we go back into our application, I movie something journey. If I remember my music, and then if I go under files it was under would be under documents, downloads and then I would have to find it. This one, I believe it was selected Boom it It's here. So now. Yet it's here. I don't want to play too much of it due to copyright, but you get the idea. That's how you can add music from outside sources to your videos. So a really cool place to get free sound to fix is this website called free sound. So you have to make an account and sign in. Then you can search for whatever sound you're looking for right now. I'm looking for Bush, so I have dis elect Creative Commons zero for it to have no requirements for attribution. Then I will select whatever format I wanted it. I wanted an MP three and let's hear some of these. I know quite what I'm looking for. I think this one sounds pretty good. So I will click on it and I would download it. Scored Orange Sheep dog Done. It saved its downloading. Right now it shouldn't take too long. Sweet. I think it has downloaded. Let's go back to my movie. See, it should be on the audio. My music files guarded documents and then it will be under downloads and it looks like it's here. Orange sheep dog swing boot. It's here now, so I want it between these two clips, cause that would work very well. So are planted here to see what it sounds like. A Z. You can see that sound if it really added to that transition so you can play around with sound effects like that. Hopefully it will start adding more dip to your video. You can choose to fade in and out, sound to fix and soundtracks. How do you do this? You select the sound effect of sound trick. Then you go to volume. Then you select fate. See this little triangle here? I can drag that to wherever I want the fade into end. The food that I dragged to the right means there will be a longer fade in. The less I dragged to the right, the lesser the faded. If I go right to the end of my project, I can select Fade to and now I can choose where I want the fade out to stop. Also, if you're looking for music to add to your project, there's a website called Looper Man. Here you will find a lot of beats and tracks that you can use. You may have to make an account 12. BONUS A Rule for Pauses: So this was an idea that I came across very recently. So when you split a clip, the idea is to have the brake slightly longer at the starting clip, then at the leg in clip. So here I made a pause because I had to read off the script and I will have to shorten both clips to make it look more professional here. I'm demonstrating there. I'll make the first clip split immediately after I finished talking, and the second clip has a longer break before I start talking awareness. Oh, so you're willing. Doesn't sound quite as good as the other way around where I start talking immediately after I cut it on the second clip and there's a slightly longer pours on the first lip here. I excellently cut too much off on the second lips or extended a slight bit, and now I'll play it again for you spread brand awareness. Oh, so hopefully that sounded a bit bitter and you get my point 13. BONUS Adding Screen Recordings: say, I want to show people something that I'm demonstrating on my screen. I can screen record and add that to my eye movie project, for example, say I want to show them this Google search of the Rubik's Cube. It's recording now. I'm scrolling doing whatever I need to do to demonstrate. Then I want to stop recording and it should appear right here. I can add it to where Once as demonstrated before and here I have a perfectly good screen recording. You can screen record your iPhone and put it here to just a drop, and it should be sweet. So I will briefly demonstrate that now on my iPhone say, I want to get a screen recording off this home page. Hours grow down, select screen record, and now it should be screened, recording as seen in the top lift. And now I'll stop the recording and then I'll select this notification and I would just drop it to my iPad. So now it's on my iPad. I find it here. I just want to add it, and here it is. And as you see, it's pretty cropped. If I select this plus button, it fits perfectly now and your playback pretty smoothly. And, yeah, I find this feature pretty helpful. I like to demonstrate things on my iPad or iPhone. 14. Conclusion: Thank you for making it all the way to the end off this class. I hope you guys learn something from watching all the tutorials. Let me know how your project goes. Please share with me. Please give me a comment and please give me feedback on how I can improve. I'm always trying to improve my teaching, so if you could provide feedback that be really helpful. But thanks for joining me once again. And I wish you well on your video editing journey.
