Understanding the Best Brain States for Producing Creativity: in this lesson, we're gonna be discussing something that most people are entirely unaware of, which is their brain waves and the role that brainwaves have in giving rise to various states of consciousness. And the fact is that certain states of consciousness are better for achieving certain tasks . So, for example, do in a highly analytical task requires a different state of consciousness than coming up with new creative ideas. And while we all know this intuitively, the fact is that most people don't understand their own brain or how to use it to achieve maximum results. The easiest way to become more creative is to change your state of consciousness. But before we get into exactly how to do that and how all of that is done, let's talk a bit about brainwaves. You see. In 1924 a German physiologist and psychiatrist named Hans Berger recorded the first human E E G in an E. G is a device that measures electrical activity in the brain, So I e brainwaves. The four most common brainwave types are beta alfa, fada and delta. Now, when your brain is predominantly producing beta waves, that is a state of consciousness that is generally associated with being wide awake and alert. So for most people, it is our normal waking state, and stimulating beta activity in the brain can do things like improve emotional stability, improve energy levels, attentiveness and concentration. When you're in baby, your brain is making finer and finer distinctions in his processing mawr information than some of the other brain wave states that we're gonna talk about. So one way you can think of it is when you're in beta, you are basically Mawr zoomed in on your experience. The problem was spending too much time in beta, which is what many people in the Western world do is that it's easy to miss the bigger picture and recognize the bigger patterns of situations and in our lives in general. I mean, you've probably heard the expression, you know, missing the forest through the trees, or you can't see the forest through the trees as a side note. When you get stuck on a particular problem, when you just can't. When your mind is just in information overload and you just feel like you can't see solutions to problems, it's normally because you're overly zoomed in and you're in a beta ST. So one other thing is, if you consume a lot of caffeine and sugar, it can also keep you in that state as well. One of one important thing to realize is that none of these brain wave states are bad or good. They're just better or worse for certain results that you're trying to achieve. Now. The thing about bait it is it. It is not the optimal state for giving rise to creativity, so the next common brainwave state is called Alfa. Now Alfa is commonly referred to as the gateway to the subconscious mind, and Alfa is a slower brainwave state than beta. In beta, your brain is producing brainwaves in a frequency range of between 12 2 27 hurts, whereas in Alfa it's producing a range of between 8 to 12 hurts. So the point is, your brain in Alfa is slowing down in beginning to process less bits of information. When you're in Alfa, you're awake but relaxed. You can recognize this state when you're deeply absorbed in a movie with your attention fixated or right when you wake up in the morning or before you go to bed. Now, when your brain is predominantly producing alfa waves, you see mental imagery and visualizations. More vividly. New creative ideas tend to arise spontaneously. When you're in this state, you tend to notice different patterns in life because you're starting to zoom out a bit as it were, producing more awful waves will lead to more creativity Now. One way to look at brain waves is that different information is associated with different brain wave states. So, for example, excuse me. In other words, when you're in one brain wave state, you're literally processing the world in your experience differently than when you're in another brainwave state. Now the next one is theater. Dita is slower than Alfa and is a frequency range of between 3 to 8 hurts. This state is associated with light, sleep deep, relax ation and, interestingly enough, hyper suggestibility. When someone is in deep trance from hypnosis or an experienced meditator, they can reach that state while maintaining consciousness. This state is also associated with realms. Sleep states. Now Delta is the final brain wave that we're going to discuss. It's the slowest out of the four being a range of between point to hurts to three hurts. This is a state of deep, dreamless. Sleep when you're brain is predominantly producing Delta waves. Your body is in a healing and restorative mode and is resetting your internal clocks. You do not dream at all when you're in this state, and most people are completely unconscious. You know some some researchers will tell you that everybody is completely unconscious, but that's entirely open to mean. That entirely depends on who you ask. So again, we go in and out of these brain wave states. Naturally, when most people don't realize is that you can recognize an intentionally create various brain wave states at will, and there's many interesting things that you can do by stimulating certain brain wave frequencies. Now you'll also notice that the brain wave states Aaron ranges. So there are some interesting effects that can be experienced by being on the cusp between two states or by stimulating different parts of the brain in different ways. And there are other brain wave states beyond the four that we've discussed here, and there's a whole fascinating field of research that covers all of this in more depth. So if you look in the resource section of this lecture, you're gonna find some links, and some resource is that provide further explanation, and I strongly encourage you to look into that. The important point to realize is that you can change your brain with frequencies and use these different states for your benefit. Now, four highly effective ways to change your state are hypnosis, meditation, brain wave, entrainment and biofeedback. And I actually do have a course on meditation for beginners. If you'd like to check that out as well. So now that we've covered brainwaves a little bit, let's move on to some practical application of this knowledge. 3. How to Easily Get into a More Creative Frame of Mind : in this lesson, I'm gonna show you a very simple exercise that will help you to immediately get into a more creative brain state. The easiest way to do this is to help your brain to produce more powerful waves. So let me show you exactly how you want to do that. The first thing that you want to dio is you want to close your eyes Once you have your eyes closed, you wanna make your body still, you can do this laying down, But I do suggest that you do this while sitting up upright and relaxed in a chair on the couch. And hopefully you're alone when you do this. Otherwise it can be kind of distracting. And so now you have your eyes closed, you are sitting upright, preferably and you're still you keep your body's still. You know what I want you to do is I want you to then start to take some long, slow, deep breaths breathing from your diaphragm, which is down by your belly button. Feel that expand as you take those deep breaths and you allow the exhales to be longer. Then the inhale. So, for example, it might look like this, and you do that breathing pattern for just until you consort to feel yourself becoming more relaxed as soon as you feel yourself becoming more relaxed, Now you want to do at that point is you want to allow your breathing to become natural and effortless, so you only do that breathing part until you can feel yourself becoming relaxed. Now, simply closing your eyes is going to start to produce more awful waves. But when you combine that with the physical stillness as well as the breathing technique, the effect is amplified. What you're doing here is you're reducing the amount of information, the amount of sensory information that your brain needs to process. So when you do that, you're gonna find that your brain will start to slow down very easily. Now, you can think of this as a form of meditation, but it's really not necessary to put any labels on it. When you start to do this practice, you're gonna notice that you begin to relax and get more comfortable almost immediately, and so you can keep this activity up for five or 10 minutes. I probably wouldn't suggest doing it any more than 30 or 45 minutes. I personally do this exercise multiple times throughout the day. So, for example, I might be sitting at my computer working intensely on something for 90 minutes or two hours, and I will start to feel myself sort of get to zoomed in like I need to take a break. And so what I'll do is all I'll get up and I'll go take a break and I'll do this exercise. And it's sort of resets me emotionally mentally and gives me a fresh perspective. So I use this exercise any time as sort of my default foundational method for getting back into ah brain state. That is gonna be more conducive to generating new ideas and fresh inspiration, because in many people's lines of work, you know, my mine included, we often times have to switch between different activities. So, for example, I might be doing something for several hours that requires intense analytical skills and focus. And then I need to shift gears and move into a more creative state where I need to write something or come up with new ideas. So you're not gonna be able to make that transition very Well, unless you do something to change your brain wave states. So using this exercise is gonna be phenomenally helpful for you if you begin to practice immediately. So now that you have a basic foundational method to quickly and effectively change your brain, state joined me in the next lesson. 4.
