1. An Introduction to the Course: Hello there. My name is David James Salt. And I would like to welcome you to this skill share class which will show you how to easily create beautifully formatted e books. Using vellum class is actually part of the writers tools of the Trade Siris of classes on skill Ship, the aim, which is to provide self published authors information on a set of tools that help in creating, publishing and promoting their books in this particular class. You, uh, how to set up your books in phone content in vellum. How to set up styles for your book out to preview your book within and tell to compile your book in balance. So go ahead and roll in my class. And I look forward to seeing you too only in sight. 2. Your Class Project for the Course: Hello. In this short video, I'm going to talk about your class project for this course. Quite simply. Once you have completed each of the lectures in the class, I would like you to answer the following questions regarding vellum One do you plan to use for Have you ever used vellum for one of your books too? If Yes. What is it in particular that you like about vellum? And three, If no thin letters know why you should write down your answers on, then post them to the projects gallery. Good luck with your project. And I look forward to seeing your answers in the Project gallery soon. 3. An Introduction to Vellum: Another piece of software that I recommend for Formatting e books is vellum, which formats e books into the Kindle K F eight format, as well as nook and iBooks E pup formats. I have actually used vellum for my poetry book, The Cap from Berries Tales, and I believe the elegant styles that you can set up within the software suit the poetry genre extremely well. These elegant styles come at a price. Vellum starts at $29.99 per book, which is perhaps a little on the pricey side, especially when you consider what $45 gets you with Scrivener. However, they do also offer the option of 10 books for $99. 99 which considerably brings down the unit cost. And you can also use vellum for an unlimited number of books for $199. 99 4. Setting Up Your Book’s Info: Hello, They So here we are in a premium software for formatting your E book called Vellum. And this is another piece of software that I recommend for formatting E books into the Kindle K F eight format, as well as nook and iBooks e pop formats. I've actually used vellum for my poetry book, The Cat From Berries Tails, because I thought that the elegant styles that you can set up within Belen suited the poetry John very well indeed, however, unsurprisingly, thes elegant styles come at a price. Vellum cost $29. 99 for each individual book you create, although they also offer the option of 10 books for $99. 99 which considerably brings down the unit cost. Or there's even the option of an unlimited number of books for $199. 99. So we're currently looking at My Cat from Berries Tales Poetry Book, and we are in the contents section. Off the software on the first part of the content section is where you need to enter your books info and as you can see, the title subtitle on offer are Alvar al use that are immediately locked once you enter them. This is obviously to prevent anyone trying to create more than one book from a single purchase as well as the locked information. You're also able to input additional authors and a publisher name. So I put alternate reality here a publisher link. So I put my alternate reality website here. Publisher logo. If you have one. The language of your book, in my case, English on ESPN number If you have one and finally the version of your book, and here you can add your books cover. 5. Adding Your Book’s Cover and a Word on Image Dimensions: whenever you add an image within vellum, you were given warnings as to whether or not in images off a large enough size for a particular format. For example, vellum is warning me that although my cover size satisfies the minimum requirements for the Kindle or nook formats, the cover is currently too small to be accepted by the Apple iBook store. Currently, the cat from Berries Tales is in KDP Select as it is a one off poetry book on not in Siris . So for the time being, that is okay, but it's certainly good to know for the future. 6. A Look at Your Book’s Content: below the book info section in this left hand pane, you can see the actual chapters that make up your book. So I have a copyright page where I have copyright information dedication to Minka, my old cat, and also call to action, where the reader doesn't get the audio book version of the Cat from various tales. And this is actually a lead magnet for a mailing list. Following on from the copyright page are each of the chapters in the book or, in this case, each of the different poems. And then, finally, the back matter of the book, which are two pages that have various calls to action within. So that is the contents tab where you actually write or, more likely, copy and paste from scrivener or word the content of your book. You'll see that there is also a second tap up here called styles 7. Setting Up Styles for Your Book: and this is primarily the main benefit of purchasing vellum, as you are presented with a number of different styles that you can easily apply to different elements of your book. For example, the first set of styles is for the heading of each of your chapters, and here you have given a life preview of what your chapters heading looked like for each different style. As you can see, there are three different options that you can scroll between for your headings, one with just the chapter title one with the chapter title, a decorative feature in the chapter number and finally one with the chapter title on the chapter number, but without the decorative feature. And I think I will choose that 3rd 1 for the first paragraph. There, in fact, six different styles to choose from a regular style. And it looks like they're using Moby Dick as the example, capitalizing the 1st 3 words, capitalizing the 1st 6 words. The drop caps, a smaller drop caps and then an elegant looking one. Let's choose that 1st 1 for this example, then you can style your block quotations. I don't actually have any in this book, but I would probably choose Style number two in a non fiction book to make quote standout. And the next stop is the ornamental breaks, which I do have in this book. There are six ornamental breaks that you can choose from, and I quite like that 2nd 1 The next style is how the paragraph after break appears so similar to the first paragraph. Styles on our should choose an elegant on this time just to be different. Next up is how the photos or images within your book appear, so the 1st 1 is without any effect. Then you have a drop shadow, if it thing black border, a thick gray border in a sort of raised Beijing colored border, which is quite an interesting effect. Think I'll choose the drop shadow in this example? Then we have the portrayed style. The first is without any effect, then what looks like a drop shadow. Then around it corners style and finally, on oval, I quite like the rounded corners effect, and finally we have the caption style, fewer images. So we have sainted Donatella, size centred and regular form left aligned no quite left the line, and a center gray bar with the caption left the line to that Graeber. So I think I would choose that one 8. Previewing Your Book in Vellum: Okay, So once you have decided on both your content and your styles, you are then able to preview how your book will appear, and you can actually see how your book renders on an I pet, an iPhone, the Kindle paperwhite and a nook simple touch. So if you have a particular book, distribute to your most concerned with, Let's say Amazon, for example, you could make sure you put renders perfectly on the Kindle, but still have an eye open on how it renders for the iPad and the iPhone. And depending on the device, you can even see how your book will appear. The different fonts, tech sizes and even colored background. For example, on the iPad, you can increase the text size, decrease the text size, change the funds and even change into C P a month or night mode. So perhaps a transparent ping would work better on the iPad than a J pig with a white background 9. Compiling Your Book in Vellum: once you are satisfied that your book is going to look good on each of the different devices, you're then able to generate your e book formats you can generate for my books, Look and Kindle, although I books and look both used the E pup format. IBooks is using the IPAB three format as opposed to the E pop to format, and you do have the option to click on all three of them and format them at the same time. However, if you want to make sure that your book formats perfectly for each former that it might be a good idea to look at each book individually and make sure the book renders perfectly for that particular device before generating the former. And you can browse on your computer's hard drive to the folder where you would like to save the files and then click on Generate. Okay, so that about wraps up this video on the vellum software. It is easy to use. It produces great looking books, and if you have a particular book that you would like to have in a certain style like I did with the cat from Berries tales, then I don't think the $30 price tag is too unreasonable. Thank you for watching Bye for now, 10. Final Thoughts and Class Wrap Up: I would just like to take this opportunity to thank you for completing the course. I hope you got a lot out of it.
