Welcome to my Skillshare class!

In this class, I am teaching how to draw realistic, lifelike human skin using nothing else but colored pencils.

When drawing the skin, I always use the technique called burnishing for which you will need wax-based colored pencils such as Prismacolor Premier or Caran D'ache Luminance 6901. Since they are both wax-based, they blend well together and I use them both for my portraits. My fans and followers always ask me what do I use to blend my colored pencils to make the drawn skin look like in photos without any pencil lines visible. My answer is: "I use another colored pencil" and I will show you how to blend and render colored pencils for professional results. I don't use things like underpaints or solvents. So, to enroll, you will need only colored pencils and paper.

In this class, I have included demonstrations of drawing 8 different human skin tones: light, medium, and dark. I will tell you exactly which colored pencil or a combination of colored pencils to use to create a particular skin tone so that you can use the tips from this class for your lifelike, realistic portraits.


Note: these tutorials cover only the skin, not the whole portraits. However, you will learn to draw basic tones, highlights, and shadows so that you can apply the techniques and combinations of colors to your future portraits.

1. Intro: 2. Which Colored Pencils I Use and Why: Okay, So let me show the pencils that I have at home. I have this big set by former Castell polychrome ous 120 pencils, but was against you. I have hardly used um but they're very good. They're actually oil based. And I'd like workspace color pencils. They have a lot of great bent ills that I really like. And they're manufacturer in six years, which is very helpful for creating smokes credit. And so I have created swatches of colors. Yeah, this break helpful, sir. Here you can see we have solid blue that I really like to use when I colored the sky and pencils. The cars are really good And so they're not too bad, actually, but I don't. I really rarely used them. Then I have during color soft pencils, 72 pencils. Eso was again. See, also, I haven't used them, but these are also very good. Montel's and I also have a Durand Brickell are also 72 pencils, both pro color and color software wax based pencils. But I actually boat them to include them in my color picker application, which is suggestive pencils for the selected area. And I also have these two brands included, but they're pretty good and I just don't use them because I was Prisma called premier mostly, and it's like habit. But as you can see, a lot of colors are very reach. Some of them are Are not that rich. You can see these pinking, but here we have a lot of rich colors, so probably I'm going to use them. But and then I have conduct luminess 6901. So these are my second favorite, my further Prisma core premier. But these These are very high quality pencils and wax paste, and they can be easily blended with the Prisma core premiere together, so I often use them to get her. And ah, they're a bit thicker than personal club premier and much more expensive. But really, it's worth the paying for high quality pence's because it's really enjoyable to work with them because there are so creamy and soft and can be easily spread all over the paper. And, um, I usually use them when I don't have appropriate color by personal color premiere. Here we have a lot of the skin colors and I like to use thes to draw the skin. And I like this the raw numbers and French grays and I often use gobbled blows for the sky . This air Very good colors. So I really like them. And here I have Pres Mikel or Premiere. I have the biggest set, 150 pencils. So I think this are the most popular pencils among the artists. So this are wag spaced, highly pigmented, rich in color. They're good for blending, burnishing, layering and ah, we can really create a smooth textures and, for example, skin human skin. I think these are the best pencils for human skin. Of course, Cardassia, as I mentioned, also have the good pencils. But as you can see here, we have much more. I like to use this for the skin. I can create a lot of combinations of colors and of course it depends on which one is supplied first. And so we have a lot of reds, blues, greens and you can see. But what I like the most are the grays, cool grays, warm grace and French grace. I think that these are depends is that I used most. These are very helpful in adding the depths to our drawing send in creating smooths gradient, which is a very important thing in ah creating realistic drawings. 3. Color Mixing: the most important thing when mixing up the color pencil is the order in which we applied it pencils, so the first layer of the color will impact the final color and ability to work over it to build up layers. For example, if we apply dark brown first, as you can see, we won't be able to erase that. Not even wouldn't X Acto knife, because the dark brown pencil will caller the fiber of the paper completely. But let me show you when we apply cream us the first layer and overdub, we apply it dark brown how it will be totally different. So just apply it cream or any water, similar color pencil. And now we can go over with Dark Brown and also can see it is not even that dark. So you have to count on this. Sometimes it is very good and useful, but sometimes it is not. So. We really have to consider which one we apply first. As you can see, I really press very hard and I can create the caller that I created on the left Sad with last Swatch in life side when it was applied of the first layer and I have to press very hard and to go over and over again. And no matter how hard I press can create that dark color and now we can go over with an X Acto knife. And as against C, I just removed dark brown and we can see the cream under it. So this is very useful for drawing the hair. If even if you want to drop brown hair, you go. You create the first layer with green, and then you just create highlighted. Here's with an exact and I as against C, I can remove that even with my nail, which is not the case here in the left side so I can remove the first layer. So us I mentioned this is a very useful thing, but yeah, we have to really consider which color we apply first. But this is very important. And let me show you one more example. I want to makes the orange and lime peel, and this watch will be orange first layer and the swatch on the right side. I want to make one more switch to apply it. Lambiel first. So here against see, I'm going over the orange with lime feel, so these two callers are totally different, and sometimes we can actually makes them up. And here I want to apply lime feel first, you know, let's apply orange over done. It's a second layer this time, and you can already see it's a totally different color. So as I mentioned, this is very important, and we have to consider which color pencil. We apply it first, because you can see how it impact the whole cooler in everything. Then sometimes we have to make the color differently, for example, to make to smooth radiant that we will talk about with more later on. But we have to create smooth gradin between two colors, So I'm now trying to create smoke gradin between the red and orange. So I start on the left side and press very hard. And then I just released the pressure as a draw doors the right side and under right side. I want to start with orange and also to press very hard and to draw doors, the reg and to go over the red color pencil. And then I pick up the red pencil again, and I just want to feel areas that where I have a clear edge visible because I want to make the edge between these two colors invisible. So this is smooth, Grady, and and this is very important in every realistic drawing. So you will need that. It is important to practice this, and now we can actually say where the red hands and word orange ends, and sometimes the colors are too vivid, and we need less saturated color than we have to reduce the colorful nous by applying some gray color pencils over them. Here, I want to create one swatch with crimson red when left side. I mean untouched since around and here on right side, I want to go over with the warm gray 3% to reduce the weirdness of the color. And here on the fifth Swatch, I want to apply Sienna brown, so when I draw the skin, I usually apply one pencil. How to Choose the Right Colored Pencils for your Drawings: so how to choose the right colors for your drawings. So the best is to create swatches just the way we did in the previous video. Yes. Start with any cooler to suppose would match the best and then draw different colors over the swatches of this basic color. And then you have to print out your reference photo and to compare the swatches to do the colors off the skin. On your reference photo here, you can see the first combination that I drew with the Seasia. Pink and pink Rose matches the best. Maybe I would add a bit of white unless Dr with different reference photo How's it going to see? The first combination is also good, but with a bit of white. But for the mid tone is just a good color. Here you can see my color pull it that I created with rhythmical premiere for the skin. So I have reading over this watches which color pencils I used, and in which order. And then we have to create the holes and the swatches which will put over the reference part of that we have to print in the paper. So this way we will see what the color off the reference photo that we see through the hole matches with the color on all swatch, I said. This is a very good way of figuring out which color pencils to use and which combinations of color pencils to use for the portrait. I often use the pen Pick the color picker for artists that I have their loved to have my students in choosing dried color pencils and graphic councils when drawing from the reference photos. So we just have to upload our reference photo and to select the area in the picture. And the AB suggests which color or grab My pencil is the closest match to the selected Kohler. There's also a mobile version available, but this desktop version has theocracy future, which shows how close the suggested pencil wasted selected color. So if that shows above 90% and we can use that pencil with confidence and if it shows under 70% for example, then we should consider using the suggested fencer or makes it up with watercolor pencil eso. So this is very useful. But if you don't want to spend money, you can use any color picker online or in photo shop. Get some free abs and to check up for the colors. But the best way off figuring out which color pencil to use is experience. Practice trying out different color pencils to see how they look when drawn. 5. Other Tools (Paper, etc.): I always use this Bristol paper by February ano usually a four paper for months. As you can see, it waits 250 grams per square meter or 145 lbs. Which means that this paper is very thick and this is a very small space paper. And ah, a summation very thick and starting so it can endure a lot of flaring, burnishing, blending and it won't wrinkle s o. I really like working in a this paper and I use it to for both my carpenter drawing saying my graphite drawings. So just award using a common print paper that that's not good. So this paper costs about $89 for 20 sheets. But if you can buy this paper, it can be any other paper doesn't have to be any brand. It's important to buy smokes and pick paper. So I recommend getting some pencil extenders that we can use up the pencil completely and we don't have to throw out anything I have. Ah, the gauge of to extenders by Durand. It won his silver and one is black color. So I just unscrewed this sliding rink and I insert my pencil and then I screwed back. And now it can use it to it adds to the feeling of balance and ah, just like when you were drawing with a new pencil. So this is very good and useful sensory using expensive pencils. And this thing, either one is very good for a pres Mikel Premier, your pencils and the silver thicker one is I'm using for Kardashian, luminous and for Polly Calmus. And this, a thinner one is also good for hexagonal shape pencils such as some of graphite pencils. But you don't even have to purchase it. I have this part off my old mechanical a razor and Prisma Corp. American feet exactly into it. So just look around in your house. Maybe you can find some old ballpoint that you can use. And for pencils, you just get created somehow or ask someone to create us. You don't have to purchase it, but actually you buy it once, and then you can use it forever. It it will save a lot of money because you can use the pencils completely. But even after using this extenders, they will always be some part of the pencil. Like 1/2 inch or one centimeters that will just fall out of the extenders. Then you can can glue it to the pencil that you rarely use the here again, see? But I have glued it to the silver pencil that actually I never use, and then I can use it to the last Adam. Well, core pencils actually can't be erased, but I had this erasure by Hellickson and I can eliminate a bit off pencil. And also we can create some patterns with this, too. I also recommend getting an X Acto knife because this is also very good for removing some of the pencil, sometimes particular bright pencil. And I use this to for when I want to create highlighted hairs. So it's a very useful tool for drawing day animal. For in here I is a simple handheld sharpener, so it's no brand nothing. I bought this one in Tesco. It's in something like Walmart and United States. It costs, like last on the dollar, and so I never used electric sharpeners because I can't control them. They eat up too much of the pencil, and so I use only handheld once. A lot of people are complaining that per smoker premier breaks. And since there wax based, they really do break more easily than well based s O. The first reason is you might be using old sharpener, and I just want to try pencil with my old sharpener. And as you can see, it does break and let me show the brand new one. Hi usually used one sharpened for like 23 weeks. And then I replaced with a new one because it's very important and just tryingto sharpen your same pencil and, as you can see, doesn't break the second reason. Make sure they don't fall onto the floor because they won't break. But the lead inside probably will the third thing hold them next to the sharpener and not like this so far away from Not because, like this, you give them space to move. Light Skin Tone #1: Hey, guys, is Jasmine and let me show you how to draw skin with color pencils. And let's start with life skin tone. And this is the first example where I want to use seashell pink as the first layer and so lets you see shipping by personal core premier to apply basic color. We have to press last unless because we want to create the highlight in the center of the forehead, and that's why we need lighter value here. And, of course, we're going to blend it with what? OK, and now let's blend the highlighted area here in the middle with a white pencil, so just go over the area, were repressed less and burnish it with the white pencil. And of course, you have to create the smooth Grady in between the basic all over the skin and highlight, which means that you will press less and less with white OSU shade us. You burnish into the basic color of the skin so farther from the center off the highlight. So here we have to create the values that don't have visible edges between them. But that smooths gradation from shadowed a part of the skin to the highlighted and eso there's This Onley can be achieved by changing the pressure, and of course, we use like 234 pencils. But changing the pressure and controlling the pressure is the most important here, and of course, we have to press very hard if you we want to create that texture of the skin without visible lines and dots, because the burnishing would will eliminate all those lines that that nobody wants to see when they draw the skin. Okay. And now we can darken here, under left and on the right side. And I want to use clay rose over this over but both sides to darken it and it will make the forehead. And of course, the whole had appear around. So we need to create shadowed areas to So if you draw the whole portrait, this is the same for the cheeks, for the nose. Like everywhere we have dunker, we have made tone, we have dark tones and we have highlights. And this is enough. If you practice this forehead and you will be able to apply these things to the whole fortune here, also, we have to breast harder next to the hair and then just still lessen the pressure as we shade away from it. You can also use based sienna or raw CIB age, so these are very good colors for creating dish shadowed areas or the sea shopping dark brown. If you exaggerate with highlights, you just go over with the color pencils that you use for the basic color, and you will dark in the highlights. And just keep watching because I'm coming with different colors. 7. Light Skin Tone #2: Okay, now let's draw light skin. But this time, let's use burned okra 10% by car. Dash ruminants it. So here also, we have to press very hard and to create it to, in order to create a smooth texture of the skin. I just want to create highlights with my pencil here above the I. So here also, we have to burnish and to create a highlights with a white pencil over the basic color. So just pressed very hard and go over and over again and again over the same area until you create a small stature and you cover the color evenly. Cylburn awkward 10% by carnage. Ruminants is a very good color for the skin, and if you combine it with Bernstein and a 10% you can create a very good life like skin color. You can even apply burnt sienna 10% 1st and then go over with the burned okra 10%. In that case, you will get a little bit different color, but of course, this is also something that you might need in here somewhere in the rights I want to to create a shadow cast by the hair. And that's why I'm going over with Clay Rose by Prisma Color Premier If you have Onley Cardassia, luminous, you can use burnt sienna 10%. And then as we burnish away from the center of the highlight, we have to lessen the pressure on our pencil and actually to create the smooth ready in between the highlights and the basic color of the skin. So it's basically in each and every tutorial like this whenever we draw skin and we have to do the same. So it's a very good thing to practice this things here. And of course, here you have to press very hard with a wide pencil to eliminate a bit of burnt awkward 10% and to burnish it to lighten it up and to make it before had shiny and run to be around. Okay, and that it. So now you can add a bit of burnt sienna 10% or, if you want, said this is a pretty good color for a woman like with peach and pink. Don's 8. Light Skin Tone #3: Okay. Now let's use different colors for life skin tone and I want to use body beige as the first layer. And so let's just feel the whole area with body beige pressing very hard. This color is very good for the skin. - OK , but as you can see for now, it looks pretty harsh. It's pretty small, but not smooth enough and it's flat. I want to create some shadowed areas. Oh, here on the left side to make the neck more around so that I can see how bright highlights I need. And I use C P A 50% here by luminous and here also I press harder next to the edge. And then I released the pressure us I shade away from the edge towards the center of the neck, actually in words and here also on their teaching, we have to create the shadow that the chain casts over the neck and for this also use CPF a 2% by luminous unless they're the same here on the right side of the neck. Okay, and now we can continue to create highlights with a white pencil. Here in the middle, we have, like something like sunken area, which is usually highlighted. And of course, I used a white pencil for this, and I just want to create highlights over the protruding Moscow's that used to be visible on the neck. And ah, I just press very hard with a white pencil and, of course, a press harder in the middle of the highlights. And then I lessen the pressure as I burnish away from the center to make that smooths gradin between the highlights and the basic color of the skin. - And now we can create some shadows that the protruding Moscow's cast direction of the self shadow of the protruding Moscow's with CPF 50% by law, Minhas And here also, that smooths Gradin is important that that's why we have to change the pressure as we shade away from the darkest part of the South Shadow and I also used clay rose by Prisma Core Premier because thes scholars work well together and ah C p A and clear owes or body beach will really create a good color of the skin. And as you can see, it now looks last flat and looks more realistic. And this colors look good together when applied one over another. And so that's why you can have to get a ride down this pencils and practice and use them for your portrait. It's if you have only luminous. You can use Bernstein a 10% instead of clay rose. And if you have only prisma color premier, so you don't have C P A 50% you can use CPI ABI Prisma Core Premiere. You can even use French Grey 70%. So there's air brake with callers also for the skin for shading the skin, and then you just blend it with a Glaros or even Rossi Beach. Even beige sienna is pretty good, but it will give, like something like brown tone to the skin. So and these colors are pretty different, so you have to consider. And of course, you have to practice to create swatches and to see which color works together with the honor. And if you overdo shading, you just go over with body beige again, and you can lighten up anything that is too dark. You just apply basic caller again, and I want to shade more the edge here with CP a 50% by luminous because it seems to be to bright and I want to dark and it so it's better to apply it last caller toe. Apply layer by layer slowly, pressing lightly, then to press very hard and to overdo shading because you can always add more. And it's quite easier than to remove and to lighting up the shaded areas. If you overdo shading and now with combinations off, see P 50% by luminous and Claros by personal color. Premier. I want to shade the skin that is not supposed to be highlighted or not. Even that actually has to be quite dark, erred and the basic color of the skin. And so we have to work with this pencils until we're satisfied with the result. Until the smallest Gradin is flawless enough.
