1. Introduction to Lesson: In this class, I will show you a skin softening technique that applies a subtle softening layer to an image in Affinity Photo. The easiest way to do this is to use a macro, and this can be downloaded from the resources area of this page. Within the lessons, there are details on how to use this macro and this will speed up your whole workflow. The lessons we'll show you how to build the layers up above the background image. And there will also be information on how to use the mosque with the brush tool. You will also need to find tune the effect and I will show that as well. Finally, I will go through automation to speed up the workflow using the macro, including how to make your own background. There is a project at the end, and I am happy to give any feedback to any images that are posted in the discussion area. Hi, I'm Tony personally. I've been a professional photographer for over 25 years. I help people just like you with my one-to-one training and group workshops by Provide charging for camera clubs. And also like you, I shoot just for fun. Join me as I pass on a few wise words and probably the occasional unwise Guan, enact creative world called Photography. 2. Skin Softening Technique: Here we have the lovely Aimee. One of the modals are used. And even though she has great skin and make up his own before any skin softening, always go around and checking cases, the odd small spot or issues with makeup, et cetera. Anything like this needs to be taken out before any skin softening is applied. So we have a good base and I'm going to go through this using keyboard shortcuts. And that will also speed up the whole process. We have the Background layer selected here, and we're going to duplicate that with the keyboard shortcuts. If you're on a Mac, it's command and if it's Windows is controlled and we use the letter J. Next we are going to invert this new layer, which is Command or Control I. Following that began to change the blend mode. And we're going to go down to here for Vivid Light. And this will make their lives go grey. We're then going to come down to live filters. And here you want to select bypass. With the high pass. You want to add some blur that don't take this too far. With skin softening, you still want some texture. So be very careful with this. Plus we are going to add some blur layer just to diffuse the effects are more. So around about the 20 marks should do it. But depending on the size of the image that could be different, say watch out for that. What you don't want to do is use this action on an image that has been heavily cropped and that can take things a little bit too far. And we can see some texture coming through there. So that's the high pass. Make sure you've got the background image selected and then go up to filters and click on blur and Gaussian Blur. We only want to add a little bit of this. So as you go higher you can see it reduces the effect. We want to keep that affect him, that we don't want too much of it. Usually in the low seagulls will work for this. And what we're really doing is taking that high pass effect and just smoothing things out a little bit. So about there is good and we can see some texture coming through. And that softening is working really well. So we will click apply. Next. We're going to add a Layer Mask. Now as I do that, I'm going to press Alt on the keyboard. And that will bring the mask in inverted, as you can see here. Next pressing bay on the keyboard to select the brush tool. Make sure that the mask is selected. And we're working with whiten the ink grown. And now we're just going to soften that skin by brushing in that top layer where we use the high pass filter. And you can see where we're working here. I use the bracket keys on the keyboard to get my brush size is going up and down with those. I also use the number keys to get the capacity, as you can see up here. So five will give me 50%. And that will allow me to build up the effect as I brush. I tend to use a large Feather brush and I do paint quite sloppy Hs. This allows me to avoid hard edges. And I can always cut back any Over painting by just swapping the inkwell back to black. By work, keeping my fingers over the keyboard continually adjusting the brush size if needed, and just working around these edges here. You can see where you've been working in the Lyon mosque here. And if you've got any patches that look a little bit odd like around the nose here. We can identify these and go back to the image and work on those areas. So that's looking pretty good. And if we turn that off and on and just use that to check the level of the effect. We can see that it's very subtle and quiet, natural. And that's what we're after. I'm just going to go back and cut back on the eyes, the nose, and the lips here as well. So to do this, we want to go back to the inkwell over here and change that to black. And we swap them over by pressing on the keyboard. And with a smaller brush just for detailing, just go around the bottom of the nose. Make sure you've got those lips revealed at the edges, around the eyes and just inside those eyebrows and along that hair line. Now if you do feel you've gone too far, you can go back to the capacity on the Layers palette and just dial that back if you need to. I think they'll lose quite natural silica frantically that at 100%. And we'll just do another on and off to check the layer effect. And we can see that it's very, very subtle and that's what we want to achieve with this effect. But still keeping the post-production side of things very, very quick. 3. Skin Softening using the Macro: So I'm just going to dump that in the bin. Now we'll come up to the View and studio. And we want to show macro and also back and go to library. So to bring the Macro that you downloaded into your library, come up to the library palette and go to Import macros using the menu in the corner. Find where your macro is. So we've got skin soften here. Click on that. And, and I won't do that because minds already here and that will appear in your library as you can see, I've got skin soft showing here. So we have our background image. And then we need to do is click on skin soft. And that will run the macro through for you much quicker than what we did before. Want to try your own macros, come over to the macro palette and click on the red icon to start recording. Go through the actions that you want to record. And when finished, click on the stop recording Nikon. Also remember to go over to this icon which adds the macro TEA library that where you won't lose any of the work. So the macro was run. And all you need to do is to make sure that you click on the mass and then we're back brushing again. This time I'm going to demonstrate it a lot quicker and it may be a little bit more sloppy. So make sure we're on white with a brush. And again, it's just a case of painting in that effect, going around the edges. Basically why did before? And also remembering that at the end to cutback where needed so that we don't lose any of that sharpness where there's detail required. In most cases using a macro like this or speed up your process enormously. And in some cases it can easily cut your time in half. And also if you don't use techniques like this very often, just working with this macro can save you money as you don't have to look at third party applications. 4. Skin Softening Project: For a project, why not try some skin softening yourself on one of your own images? Skin softening generally works better on a good base of skin to start with. So keep that in mind when selecting an image. But there's a lot of work that's needed beforehand and it's probably not the best image to use. And maybe a little bit more care should have been applied at the makeup stage of the shoot. Remember that the key to success for skin softening is to make sure that when you finish the process is still looks natural. Also remember as you work, don't forget to turn the effect layer off and on. That's a really good way of checking the application of the effect. Once you get used to this effect, you will really find that it only takes a couple of minutes for effective skin softening on people's faces. And that's an, a very high level of competence as well.
