My name is Kaiwen and I am an aspiring car designer and automotive engineer in the making.

1. Promo: Hello there. And welcome. So in this course, I will teach you how you can use marker status stuff like this, right? You don't need exactly these, but some markers will do. You don't have to buy these exact Marcus, but using markers to elevate your car sketching from this to this. So this is one off the sketches I did off a portia. It entered Portia using Marcus, obviously more than these four. But just for the sake of you know, your bank account, who we will stick to this for Marcus, in this al tutorial, you don't have to buy exactly. These units need for types of shades for this type of sketching we're going to do. If you want to go further into stuff like this, then you can, of course, going by more colors and experiment with that. Right. Um, so the result will look something like this minus the blue. Also, if you just ignore the blue, that's what the result is gonna look like. And we'll start off with something simple, like a side view sketch here, which I did earlier off this Dutch. Tired of what I hope you like. So this is how we're gonna do it right? We're going. Teoh, talk about the tools you need, the types of markers, the colors which you should get started with. Um and which market? So you should go for the different types off them and maybe some additional stuff like pens and pencils and stuff like that. Um, the thing is that before you actually start drawing with Marcus to get here, you need to do this. You need to be able to do this. If you cannot draw using a pen or pencil on end up looking like this like your sketch, then you should probably not try Marcus. Right? So it's always about learning to walk before you learn to run, right? So make sure that you can, at least just not not necessarily do three D, but at least be able to draw like a car inside view from this perspective, using a pan and making a look kind off like this. So just using a pen or pencil with no markers and coloring, right? So and this course is about using markers to make a car really pop and make it look really riel like Thebe proper. Designers do are like it's been taught in design school, right? So where did I come from? I basically love cars. I've always loved cars. Always loved drawing or sketching cars. Ever since I was a little kid and I just kept on sketching, and at some point, I, uh I just looked up some professional sketches and some YouTube videos on how people did them and trying to follow as they, you know, try to copy the way they did it. And this is how I got here. Um, right. So, as I said, Ah, what you will learn in this course you will learn how to sketch are using microbes to end up with something like this On this, your starting point is something like this, right? And so you want to transform this into that? And it's more difficult than you might expect because using a pen Ismar simpler. You can just say like whatever you want, right? And you can just press down harder or do like more squiggly lines here to make a certain areas darker. But with Marcus, you can't do that, so make sure you can draw this. If you can't, you can go and check out my course on How did your cars like a pro in two D or three D? And make sure before you start rendering either off those with Marcus that you can do both of them. OK, I'll see you in the course. Have fun. 2. 1.1 Introduction: Hi there. Welcome to your first lecture. This is the introduction. We'll talk a bit about myself if you haven't watched the promo already. And a bit about how we're going to do this and what you're going to end up with. Okay, so, uh, we will first talk about what type of tool you need. So that's gonna be paper. Different types of paper, right? Different types of pens. What types of Marcus you can choose. You can buy which ones I'd recommend and which colors. You don't need that much, right. And then we'll talk about how you should start off with. So if you ah, maybe have a sketch like this, then maybe What does this have to look like in order to transform it into this? Obviously, I cannot transform this into that. Right, Because I already did the shading with my pen. That's not possible. So if you have done shading with your painting you want transforming into that, then you'd have to do this again without the shading. Basically right. So you wanna basically re sketch? This may be using overlay like put up another piece of paper on top like this, right? And That's three. Sketch it minus the minus the shading you did with the pepper. OK, so we'll talk about tools. We talk about the starting point and maybe kind of the level you need to be at in order to get there. But, you know, practice makes King, right. Um, I definitely have some fun with it, as I always say. Definitely have some fun with it. Don't go crazy, though, and at first we try something simpler. Maybe don't try to go crazy with your design and try to look at some existing cars or other than coming up with your own design. Because that's you know, as I said, right, learning to walk before you can run, that's that's the way to do it. If you're trying to, you know, cookery three cooker, three stage menu. If you have never cooked before, it's probably going to end up. You know, not that great or even burning down your house so you don't want that. Okay, so that's the basic settled. And then we will talk about how how we start, actually sketching right so each and every step, which which color used to start with how you use the marker. Which areas should be which color? Stuff like that. Right? And little tricks and tips to help you get Teoh car looking like that. So that certain bonus things which you might not need, right in terms of tools and certain steps, which you might skip, but it's kind of there to show you every aspect of it. I don't have to do everything but some things you have to do. Um, and some other things are optional or depending on your taste, Right. So it really depends on what you want your sketch to look like. You can make it look super nice like this, or you can make it look rougher. It all depends on what you want your schedule look like. On also depends on how much time you have on your hands, Okay? And then basically with a little sum up in the end, and then you're good to go. And as I said and a promo, if you haven't seen that, you should be at a certain level before you try markets, right? So if you're cars, don't look like this before you start, then maybe try practice this first, so make sure you can at least do. Ah, side sketch of a car like this. That's what we're gonna start with you on the tutorials. We'll start with a simple aside sketch off a car. Actually, you can do that before you go into the markets. Otherwise, that's gonna make sense, right? If your car looks like to quickly wheels and it's all over the place, you don't want to try markets. It's going really weird, right? It's not the way to do it. Okay, Uh, if you haven't, then I have a tutorial on how to sketch cars like a pro using a pen or pencil just like this. You don't need markets. Anything. Just a pad. Like a regular panel, right? A buyer. Oh, what pencil will do. Fine. And you will be after you will be able to sketch a car like this after that tutorial. And if you've mastered that, then you can come back to this course or go to the three D course that works too. Three D basically teaches some perspective stuff, right? Then you go to go for that. Uh, yeah, that's basically it about myself. I've been doing Constant. I was little. I love cars cars on like a huge petrol head because on my everything along the aesthetics, I want to become a car designer. I'm currently in my last year of engineering, and after that I'm going to go to design school on Burn our study Transportacion designed to get my car design career started. And I hope that you can learn something from this tutorial. All right, and then now it's time to go into the tools. 3. 1.2 Tools You Need: now Welcome to your first lesson on tools. Let's have a look at what you need. Aside from the regular pieces of paper just regular copy paper, right? Make sure you have, like, a layer off this not just one or two pieces, because the markets will go through them. You can, of course, your special marker papers. So it doesn't go through and you don't waste so much tent. But if you don't have a just use copy paper, it's gonna be fine. So make sure you have, like, a stack of copy paper. Then you need a black picture. It's black because if you use blue and then try to go with a marker, it's gonna look really weird. So I don't use blue unless you have a blue car. If you have a blue car, go ahead and use blue. Okay, so I recommend using a black pen like this one. Just any any regular panel do right? Or a black pencil or great pencil. Anything will do. OK, that's for your base sketch will talk about the base sketch in the next lecture. Then you need markers, right? So you can, uh, start was just one that will work right? If you just use one. You have to be very careful that it's not to Doc's, right. So if you use one market, make sure it's not black or really duck, because then it's gonna be impossible to make your sketch look great. It's gonna, you know, basically make everything black would have touched. And then, you know you don't have any shading in. There is just black or white. Very, very harsh contrast. You know what? That's so make sure if you get a marker, just one. Get one. That's light. So it doesn't matter what color it is, but I would recommend, like a to So you know that they are great on this, right? And to be double zero or three. I think a two or three will be good, right, and as you can see, they have different numbers. But if you want Teoh do this properly, then I recommend having a look at some cop IQ. But these are complex. They might be a little bit expensive where you live. There definitely aren't sheep, but they last a long time when you can fill it up right. The different versions of these. Right? So this one has a square tip here and a pointy one here. And then there's another kind where there's, like, a brush on the other side. Both are fine, right? As long as they have one tip, which is kind of like this, or it'll be sharper. Not that soft like a brush. As long as I have one of those. It's fine. Um, make sure it's alcohol, right? So don't buy these permanent markers. They're gonna be rubbish. At this s o alcohol markets, you can go for calm picks. Uh, and there are also different other brands. You know, just just make sure you look for alcohol markers. And if you want to, you can get a starter set, which gives a grayscale. So it's gonna give you, like, different types of grace, like, uh, from maybe n one Teoh to end nine or and seven stuff like that. So you have, like, a pellet off different grey scales. Those are great for starting off, because then you can use them Teoh for radiance. But for this tutorial, we're just gonna use four. I have. So I have one that's really light. And to have one that's a little bit darker. A warm three, right? Ah, warm gray here. So basically and stands for neutral and and w is for warm. And then we have cool avenue school, though. And then I have an, uh, most out and neutral four minutes. But Dr and then I have an eight, which is basically a black, but I don't want to use a completely black one because that's really, really sharp, right? Maybe don't want to do that, so I have ah, three or four. I recommend three or four markets varying on darkness and just for just for coolness. I have a warm one in here, so neutral. One warm one and two other neutral ones. Warm ones are a bit more yellow. Neutral ones are just neutral, right? And you can also buy coolants what are now called like C three or C. For those are like more bluish on for good measure. I also have a B 00 frost blue we got there why you might want to use this, but it's generally recommended to have some kind of warm, warmer or cooler tones, and they're just, like, mix it up a bit because if you only use neutral or only use cool only one it's gonna look very, you know, flat. So you want to add some death into it with some different types of colors and the blue, it's just there to put an accent on the right to make it really pop. Okay. On Daz. Additional extra you might want to use. I don't know what this is exactly. OK, so it's a jelly rule. We'll focus. It's a jelly roll. And what does it say? Made into panel? So basically what this is is ah, white paint, right? So it's two packs which allows you to at highlights here. As you can see, these little white dots and this white line here, these are called highlights on. You can achieve this with pence like this, you can also use different types off white stuff you can use, like just white paste. Right. So you have this, What color? You squeeze it out of a bottle. And it was like a really, really fine brush to do the same trick that also works. But, you know, this works too. So some really precise white color works great, which is also has to be thick. Eso You're able to go over as you can see a blue underneath. Right? So you're able to go over the brew blue or black or grey? That's important. Okay, so that's recap. What do you need? Piece of copy paper. Uh, different shades off markers. I'd say if you want to try some shade, at least three fours recommended. And if you're going to go fancy, add in another bluish one and a white one and a white type of tupac stuff and ah, black pencil or pen. That's only need on. Also not to forget a piece of paper in case you get like, um, gunk on your tip on. You don't wanna mess up your entire sketch for that. All right, cool. 4. 1.3 Skills You Need: now talk a little bit about what skills you need. Before this, I touched on this briefly in the introduction, and now I'm gonna show you what your sketch that looked like before you start using Marcus . Right. So I presume you're able to do this. Great. And now I need you to do a sketch that looks kind of like this, right? So a car from the side using a black pencil or pen and make sure you clean the tip of it so it doesn't smear. Right. So it has to kind of like this. So you start with the wheels while you know how to do this Already yourself with the wheels , all the basic character lines. You know what the cars sort of looked like a sort of look like with all the curves. And add just Ryan. So make sure you have that in your head. Kind of also, you know what? The basic shape of your car it's gonna be like on make sure your sketch looks like this. Don't add any. So this is important. Don't add any horizon lines, reflection lines or stuff like that at all. Before this. Right on. Lee at the design elements, so character lines kinks in the body work the door shut lines the wheel basic wheel are the wheels on the other side the ground, the outline off the car, that window opening that daylight opening, maybe some exhaust on just generally some lines to help you understand the basic shape off the car. That's all you need at this point. Because if you add anything else like here with the with the shading than your marker game is gonna be ruined. Because once you go over the marker, what the market over, this is going to smear a little bit and it's going to ruin this. Basically, it's not gonna look right, so make sure your car looks a little bit like this. Feel free to draw anything you like. You can also pass the video and try to copy this one. I did I on purpose at some design elements and there to make a little bit more interesting . I wanted to be so playing that you don't really learn anything from it because it's just a flat piece of stuff. You know what? That, um and yet, Okay, that's the your basic sketched Make sure deposit. Make sure you do one, and, uh, yeah, let's not get to the markers 5. 1.4 Marker Basics: Yes. Do a quick recap on horizon lines and stuff like that, and I'll give you an example off how the markers are gonna work. So as I showed briefly in the other tutorial, let's imagine this is still rising, right? Hey, maybe here we have the sun. That's the terrible son. Ignore that on on the horizon. We have a mirror. Okay, so imagine that this is a mirror. And if there was, like, a stone here on the bottom, it's gonna be reflected in the mirror. At some point, I do, if you know what I mean. And the horizon line is also going to be reflected in the mirror. But in that case, colored like that. Okay, so this is still rising line in the mirror on this is basically our This is basically our car on the side of the sheet metals represents this. Okay, so basically, we have a horizon line. Everything below that's gonna be dark and everything blowout of Sky writes, it's gonna be brighter. So imagine there's, like, a cloud or something. And then here is make this a tree or bush. It's like that, right? If it makes any sense, so Let's now start with markers that this is a brief introduction on how to use markers and how we're gonna layer this. We're gonna start off lightly without lightest marker. So in this case, and to write and it's basically color in the entire area. Make sure you hold a pen like this right on. Just go quick, Strong long strokes. Don't go back and forth. I'll go only in one direction from left to right or from right to left, right. I prefer going from left to right. Go on, Liam from one direction and just colored. If right, so that's the first doesn't have to be perfect, and you can go over it multiple times like this. I recommend going it over it on the top a little bit more often because the cool thing with alcohol, Marcus, is they get darker if you go over them more than once and take the next one, which is This case is warm three and do the same the same thing again, but only from the top and maybe not entirely to the bottom. So make sure that the top is darker than the bottom like this. You can see that It's Ah, warmer, right? Can I hold on to the next one we have And four here. Neutral four. So this is for large areas. If you have really tiny areas, make sure to use to find tip. But we'll get to that intimate. Okay, So okay, lets go this I don't have to be perfect. And then we'll go to our darkest one, and then for this case, we're gonna actually for safety. We're gonna use the fine tip, and we're just going to go over the top like this. What's going on? So imagine that this is a mirror. It looks very kronish. It's really cool. And then we have the sky, basically basically that right? So if it that makes any sense and if you just look at this area here, you can kind of tell that looks a bit like chrome, right? A bit like here it, But like here, on this car, basically, this area represents this area here. And then the blue is also the top here. Looks like crew. Okay, that's the basic idea. Okay, let's move on to the car. 6. 2.1 Your Base Sketch: it's not talk about the car. So you've seen this, right? You know, kind of what the what? The idea is with markers. Chrome ish, kind of look, right. This is the horizon, So? Well, actually, now move on to the car and get rid of this, and you can see that it's a mental through the color, right? Doesn't matter. So what is actually gonna put our kind on top shoot? Because we already ruined this piece of paper sets. I'm not ruin another one. Okay. Okay. The first step is you have your raw car here, right? No horizon inflict reflections. So now you want to add the horizon Reflections with your pen. You can also use markets already, but just for understanding, I'm going to add them rising here, using my pen. If you don't know how to do this, um, then have a look at my tutorial on how to draw cast like a pro. I'll talk briefly about how this works, right? So we start here from the front fender and canned curbs, right, Because we went white fenders and then on the back, we have a really wide fire, so it's gonna craving more wrap around like this. Same here. And then we had, like, a shark, actually, because that's what the car stops, All the affection stops, and we have life coming from there. That's why we have this truck s here. Appear OK, something here We have another shock ash, which follows the outline off the car right here. And then we also have a horizon reflection on the lower part of the window. That's basically a okay. And if you want to do chrome wheels are self like that. Then you can also add like a horizon in the wheels. And the wheels are also crypt where we want dissed deep concave wheels. Those look recall. Okay, so now we have the horizon lines, and now it's time to decide which areas are dark and went up, right? Maybe guessed it's already, but everything below the horizon line it's gonna be dark and everything above it's gonna be bright. So basically, the next step is now to start with the layers off Marcus, which we did here, do the exact same thing as we did here with the markers just on the car. But yeah, it's really important to remember that Of course, the car isn't a flat mirror. Right? So there may be stuff in between. Like, you can see. Uh, there's a horizon line on the car underneath. We have this character line, so make sure you you remember that and maybe not mess that up. Okay, let's now go into, uh, firstly. 7. 2.2 Layer 1: Okay, let's now do the first layer. As I said previously, we will start with the lightest color in this case and to, and we'll simply cover everything under the horizon line. Okay, so let's get started. You may be. You may want to outline it first. So you know exactly which area to cover, right? You can do this just to help myself. Let's do this. So this is gonna be the area in the middle. All of this doesn't have to be perfect. Less all of this. It's gonna be great. Let's do that first just for help. You don't have to do this. Just get started, okay? Only go from one side to the other. In this case, we can cover everything because the character line you see here, this one is actually facing downwards. So it doesn't matter too much if we locked up, because it will be docking anyways. Right? So we're starting dog, and then we do the same thing in the back. And in this case, this cattle I'm is facing up. So we want to leave that out and doesn't matter if you go to the wheel or if it's not quite as precise. If you want, it doesn't have to be perfect. Looser looks gives the cooler. It's gonna look, I think because it gives them it was their feel. Okay, first there, off everything. Another horizon line. Now it's time, Teoh. Still consider the surfaces that are facing downwards, Right? So if you have ah, King and the sheet metal like this like that, you can see. But But But imagine. This is a king in a sheet metal, and so you can see that this area is darker on that on that right? So, actually, up for this car that's messed it up. This layer is gonna actually be darker, because this is what I decided to be a downward facing character life. Okay, So listen and used the thick tip of the thin tip because this is a really small area, okay? And again go from left to rights. One direction only. It doesn't have to be perfect just like this. And if you have other areas, make sure to call them middle swell. So in this case, I have this area. It's okay, Dokey. And also, don't forget the window. Right? We have arrived in the window too. So everything we know that also dark. Okay, first layer looks kind of cool already. Right. Let's move on. 8. 2.3 Layer 2: So we finish our first layer here. We can also go on modified and maybe make it more precise. You can do that. No problems. Let's move on to the next layer. So we had. And two, that's off. Um, that's our brightest layer. Here on we go to the next one, which there's a little bit darker in this case, Warm, great three. And we'll do the same thing as we did here. It's gonna leave this year for Demo, and we'll start from the top off the rise in line and not go entirely to the bottom. Okay, so it gives it a kind of chrome effect. So kind of a Grady int. Okay, Still, this Tofting arrives tonight, only go in one direction and actually smooth. Okay, I like this same in the front. That's basically it. You can also doom, or if you want to. I'm just gonna maybe making more precise here on the edges and make sure, uh, it's really smooth. But if it's not in the beginning, it doesn't matter the so that it looks the better, right? So make sure you use quick lines, and if it's not perfect, doesn't matter too. much Maybe go we a little bit here, Okay. And now it's also time to color in the downward facing surface areas, as I said, because those are also affected by like so if your horizons affected by business also gonna be affected by okay, and maybe also some accents here. Oh, if we forgot this area, actually, that's Ah, call this one. This is a double facing I see here. Okay. And also the window. If you want to the windows acting on an every doctor. It's given cops shop a look. Okay. Looks really cool. Right? Let's move on to the next layer. 9. 2.4 Layer 3: So now we have our second layer down. Let's move on to our third layer. So this was our second layer. Let's move on now to the third layer and the doctor, You go, the more capital you have to be Okay, because you cannot cover up dog stuff with even darker stuff until you get to black and then you're screwed. Okay, The same thing. I'm going to use the thin pan here, this thing and just to highlight some of the top dark areas. As I said, just to add some contrast and yeah, this I think I'm actually not use the really dark really duck market on the horizon here and only here on the window because the windows you really, really dark. And if you use are really Blackwall here on the on the horizon, it's gonna clash with the window and look, were you don't want that? And don't forget that that we're facing services, it doesn't have to be perfect. Will perfected in the end, using various methods, I'll show you no problem. And the window Okay, I'm going with wheels a little bit, But be careful. I don't screw it up. If you do at this point, it's not that big of a deal, because you still have. Ah, really? Don't want to go. Okay, so there's no next day you can see that as a car becomes more and more and more three D if you get what I mean, You can also always correct your lower layers, right? As you can see here, Maybe this wasn't as dark as I wanted to be, because it doesn't stop there, here and there to looks better like this. Okay, so this was our layoff three. And now let's go on to lay out for 10. 2.5 Layer 4: therefore the doc one. Okay, really careful with this one. Now, your colleague school. You can stop here if you want to. Because this is kind of what your car is already right? If it makes any sense, of course, we haven't done everything it like the wheels and stuff like that and holes in the boy like events. Right? This event I haven't done that. We'll do that later. Okay, Let's do the window now. The windows. The only area where you come, you go carelessly with black. Just call the entire face. FNC. It looks really cool because the window, actually no pops looks like a really nicely tinted window. Right Can do the exhaust hole to you on any surface that's really directly pointing towards the floor stuff like the floor, you can make black. So let's make the floor black off the car, okay? It's like this just smooth lines. And the doctor you go, the less you have to care about the direction. But I don't recommend going one direction because Dr you go, the less you're going to see where you started from and not to forget the wheels on the other side which you can see here and here. Go here. Those are gonna be black two. Let's call it a sin. An accident, nuts to go into the actual wheel. Al aside here, okay? With again doesn't have to be put so you can record around from the other side. But maybe not use that much color, just wrap it around. We go from light to dark coloring in the area under the horizon line, adding a little bit of Grady into it. You can see it's on the top of the right lines a bit darker than the rest went to color and holds off the card or to color in areas of the car which are facing downwards like this because they are darker, right, including the wheels. And then we can adjust a little bit using black. Afterwards, you can see, um, certainly does look better when the doctor, like the gets on the outside, the inside off the wheel, the tires, the floor right. Stuff like that. Make sure to color that in on a little trip tips and fix what I've shown you. And in the end, you can always add more details or go doctor wheel details like details of you have read, or stuff like that can always at this. Then you can refine your lines with your black pen. So if you if you messed up like a market area, you can correct it with the pen. It's really sharp is really precise, right? Like the windows around stuff like that. And if you want to, if you have like blue pencil lightly glass over the top of the car to make it look. Romish make it look like it's reflecting the sky. And in the end, if you really want to do it properly, you can use ah white like uh oh, what's got cover up pen or Tipp ex or just white paint with a really thin brush and go like over the king and the doors at highlights such as these And that's going to really make your car pump cool.
